- Is an extraordinary documentary that delves into the remarkable life and career of Charlotte Crossley, lovingly known as Charlo. From her humble beginnings on the vibrant streets of Chicago's South Side to gracing the stages of Broadway and beyond, Charlo's journey is nothing short of inspiring. Charlo's musical odyssey started at the tender age of seven when she joined the Metropolitan Community Church choir, showcasing her undeniable talent for singing. Throughout her elementary school years, she diligently honed her skills on the piano and clarinet, persisting until her graduation from South Shore High School. At just fifteen, she ventured into the world of theater, taking on iconic roles in productions like "West Side Story" and "The Threepenny Opera" at the Young Men's Jewish Community Center. Here, a perceptive director recognized her exceptional talent and urged her to audition for "HAIR: The Musical," a groundbreaking American tribal love-rock musical. Her decision to attend an open call right after high school graduation marked the beginning of her remarkable showbiz career. However, Charlo's path to success was not without its challenges. Her father's disapproval of her chosen career led to a brave and heart-wrenching decision: leaving home to chase her dreams. Performing eight shows a week, she navigated the demanding world of entertainment. Yet, Charlo's ability to captivate audiences and shine in the limelight became second nature to her. She continued to dazzle with the Chicago Company, embarked on journeys to Las Vegas, and eventually joined the first national tour of the Tony Award-winning production of "HAIR." Her move to New York City led her to become an integral part of the original Broadway cast of "Jesus Christ Superstar," a rock opera that would later earn a Tony Award. Charlo's career took a thrilling turn when she crossed paths with legendary artists like Bette Midler and Barry Manilow, leading to a cascade of opportunities. These experiences culminated in her recording for CBS Records as a cherished member of the revered backup singing trio, The Harlettes, alongside Sharon Redd and Ula Hedwig. Charlo's enduring success in the entertainment industry is a testament to her unwavering dedication and indomitable spirit. She collaborated with luminaries like Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Lainie Kazan, Muddy Waters, Sister's Love, Boz Scaggs, and Hiroshima. She also graced the silver screen in films such as "The Preacher's Wife," "Beaches," "Sister Act 1," "Sister Act 2," "When Harry Met Sally," "Faster," and the Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary "Behind the Candelabra." Most notably, Charlo is prominently featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary "20 Feet From Stardom," directed by Morgan Neville, which unveils the untold stories of backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century.
