- CreatorSteven S. DeKnightStarsAndy WhitfieldLucy LawlessManu BennettThe life of Spartacus, the gladiator who lead a rebellion against the Romans. From his time as an ally of the Romans, to his betrayal and becoming a gladiator, to the rebellion he leads and its ultimate outcome.Okay, so this is not really a film. It is a television series, and it does show up elsewhere on another one of my lists. However, I cannot think of another show with so many attractive men shown in the best possible light, so it has to top my list. Also, a great plot makes it more than just a guilty pleasure. There is a lot of drama, emotion, a great bromance, and even a little romance. If you are sensitive, be aware that the graphic violence and explicit nudity and sex may be a problem, but if not, it might be worth popping into the DVD or Blue-Ray player.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenViggo MortensenWhile Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron's new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard.J.R.R. Tolkien's classic second book of his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy comes to the big screen. The manliness factor gets hyped up from the first movie, "The Fellowship of the Ring," with the arrival of Faramir and Eomer; although only the extended director's cut preserves Boromir. If you do not know who these characters are, watch this movie and discover. Beautiful cinematography and musical score, with a fantasy Dark Ages/early medievel feel. This is a great film for preteens on up, although there is some blood and gore.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring. The last of the "Lord of the Rings" films and a climatic ending to the epic. By far the best film of the trilogy. Faramir, Eomer, and Aragorn continue their struggles against the evil Sauron alongside a slew of fantastic characters; including a wizard, dead warriors, elves, a dwarf, and little men called "hobbits". Hobbits Frodo and Sam continue the journey they started in "The Fellowship of the Ring" towards Mount Doom to destroy the evil "One Ring", and Pippin and Merry join the fight to free Middle Earth alongside men (and one woman).
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsClive OwenStephen DillaneKeira KnightleyA demystified take on the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.Fun retelling of the King Arthur legend goes back to its roots; in 5th Century Britain. Arturos, a half Roman half native Briton, leads a group of auxiliary knights forced into service to Rome first against the Picts (a Celtic tribe), then against the Saxons. Arthur's knights become the stuff of legend, although they are a far cry from the clean cut chivalrous versions they become in medieval tales. If you do not mind your hunks irreverent and coated in mud, you might get a kick out of this flick. Pop some popcorn and settle down on your couch for a little distraction.
Intense battle violence and blood may make it too intense for younger teens downwards, not to mention a scene of mild sensuality. - StarsScott GrimesDamian LewisRon LivingstonThe story of Easy Company of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and their mission in World War II Europe, from Operation Overlord to V-J Day.Okay, I did it again. I included a television miniseries in a list of movies, but this one is worth it. Beautifully told and moving story of E Company's journey from training in Georgia to Hitler's Eagle Nest in Germany. Along the way, the men encounter heavy fighting, the harsh natural elements of Europe in winter, and deeply felt losses among their comrades, but are held together by a bond that goes beyond kinship to become a "Band of Brothers". Executively produced by Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks, this series became a classic among miniseries. There is not one person in this ensemble cast which does not deliver a magnificent performance. The violence is pretty tame for a war film, but be aware that it is present, and that there are disturbing moments in this film, as in all war films.
- DirectorJohn DahlStarsBenjamin BrattJoseph FiennesJames FrancoTaking place towards the end of WWII, 500 American Soldiers have been entrapped in a camp for 3 years. Beginning to give up hope they will ever be rescued, a group of Rangers goes on a dangerous mission to try and save them.If you notice a pattern here, it is because the testosterone factor gets seriously pumped up in war films, although so few go beyond the intense battle scenes and show the real relationships between the soldiers. But this film, however, I found to be one of the different ones. "The Great Raid" is set during World War II, and documents the greatest rescue in U.S. military history, when a small but elite group of men (the 6th Ranger Battalion) undergo a mission to liberate 500 American prisoners of war from a Japanese camp. There are extensive scenes in the camp, which show the support system that the prisoners offered each other, as well as their harsh treatment at the hands of their captors.
