Movies to be trapped on a desert island with... (Part II)
...along with a playing device, of course. Movies that I've experienced can be watched over and over and still enjoyed, though you have seen it all and, sometimes, practically have it memorized.

- DirectorStephen FrearsStarsGlenn CloseJohn MalkovichMichelle PfeifferA scheming widow and her manipulative ex-lover make a bet regarding the corruption of a recently married woman.John Malkovich is the epitome of the anti-hero. He is a despicable cad, a bounder, a lowlife seducer of women... but he's got so much *charm*.
This period piece, regarding the intrigues of the uber-rich in pre-Revolutionary France, is very close to the perfect movie. Lush costumes, beautiful scenery, a tight, intricate storyline, characters good and evil both of whom you can find support for, and first-rate acting. - DirectorNorman JewisonStarsDanny DeVitoGregory PeckPenelope Ann MillerA corporate raider buys up shares in an undervalued company and falls in love with the founder's son's lawyer/step daughter. Let the battle begin. The Anti-"Wall Street". This story of a Gordon Gecko-ish Wall Street financier known as "Larry the Liquidator", who searches for functioning companies that are worth more as the parts than they are as a whole, and tells of his battle to purchase, intending to liquidate, "New England Wire And Cable".
...And it's hard not to at least say "He's got a point". - DirectorNicholas MeyerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWith the assistance of the Enterprise crew, Admiral Kirk must stop an old nemesis, Khan Noonien Singh, from using the life-generating Genesis Device as the ultimate weapon.Yeah, what was once the newest and coolest in FX is starting to look just a bit dated. But at 29 years old, this is till the best Star Trek movie of all time, despite Abram's excellent re-boot.
- DirectorJon FavreauStarsRobert Downey Jr.Gwyneth PaltrowTerrence HowardAfter being held captive in an Afghan cave, billionaire engineer Tony Stark creates a unique weaponized suit of armor to fight evil. You know how to know this movie succeeded? You leave the movie thinking:
"Damn! I *want* that suit! I *really* *REALLY* want that suit!" - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsMichael J. FoxChristopher LloydLea ThompsonMarty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.Along with the two sequels, this is possibly the greatest SF trilogy of all time. The most impressive trick is uncertain: Sitting down to make a sequel and coming up with not just one but two great sequels, or managing to make a sequel that takes place "INSIDE" of the original picture.
- DirectorMilos FormanStarsF. Murray AbrahamTom HulceElizabeth BerridgeThe life, success and troubles of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as told by Antonio Salieri, the contemporaneous composer who was deeply jealous of Mozart's talent and claimed to have murdered him.Inspired performances by the leads, as well as an exceptional supporting cast, make this biography of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart one of the best biographical pictures of all time.
- DirectorJoe PytkaStarsRichard DreyfussTeri GarrDavid JohansenA nosy cab driver gets a hot tip on a race horse and wins big, but he can't seem to stop gambling. Will he go broke or walk home with a pretty penny?Jay Trotter is a loser. He is addicted to gambling, and has sworn off it in order to reunite with his estranged wife... Until he gets wind of a "sure thing" at the horse track, that is.
"You might be walking around 'lucky', and not even know it." - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.A series of vignettes tells the story of how two guys wound up getting robbed in a coffee shop for breakfast... in the most entertaining way.
This would be the Anti-"Mormon Date Movie". Language, violence, drug abuse, you name it, it's probably here somewhere playing against a great soundtrack. - DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.Andy Dufresne is the only man in Shawshank Prison who is innocent... yet believes he truly isn't. The years he spends in prison are long and hard, but despite all of it, he succeeds in earning his redemption.
- DirectorDelmer DavesStarsHumphrey BogartLauren BacallBruce BennettA man convicted of murdering his wife escapes from prison and works with a woman to try to prove his innocence.Least appreciated of the four Bogie-Bacall pictures, I have always found this one particularly entertaining. It's neither the most slick nor the most inventive picture of the four, yet it still has a hero you can identify with, a heroine you want on your side, and is quite entertaining. Notice the early-movie camera work, done entirely from the hero's POV, until he succeeds in getting his appearance changed... into Bogie.
