- DirectorBibo BergeronStarsMatthieu ChedidVanessa ParadisGad ElmalehA 3D-animated movie set in Paris in the year 1910 and centered on a monster who lives in a garden and his love for a beautiful, young singer.Cinema day 1/2 film 1/3
This was the most enjoyable film of the day. Why?
There is a world view that politics is about lies, and the message of the film is that soul is more desirable. Set in an animated Paris with a U certificate, it was nice to see these themes that are sometimes portrayed darkly in other movies. Also a couple sweet love sub-story. - DirectorBrad BirdStarsTom CruiseJeremy RennerSimon PeggThe IMF is shut down when it's implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization's name.Cinema day 1/2 film 2/3
Typical action movie, comedy as usual didn't make it any better. Nice reveal at the end, though it is completely detached from the main film by being in the aftermath, which made it quite a strange inclusion. - DirectorGuy RitchieStarsRobert Downey Jr.Jude LawJared HarrisDetective Sherlock Holmes is on the trail of criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty, who is carrying out a string of random crimes across Europe.Cinema day 1/2 film 3/3
Quite acurate portrayal of the beloved Sherlock Holmes, both in his forward thinking and attention to detail shown by point driven action sequences before the action then takes place, and his obsession with Watson and their quite personal relationship. - DirectorJuan Carlos FresnadilloStarsClive OwenCarice van HoutenIzán CorcheroTwo children living in different countries are visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them.Cinema day 2/2 film 1/3
This was the best film of the day. Why?
It is essentially a ghost story told through two children who read the story which comes to life. The normal things that the film could conjure a fear of was impressive, and the way that the children's ghost story develops and twists gives it a true "ghost story" finish. - DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsGina CaranoEwan McGregorMichael FassbenderA black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.Cinema day 2/2 film 2/3
This film was lame. Mostly because it took a subject that could be very stylised and failed to stylise. The fight actions were slow and rehearsed, lending no believability to the femme fatale character. Some of the locations had uncommon realistic detail (unstylised) but that's about it for plus points. - DirectorMåns MårlindBjörn SteinStarsKate BeckinsaleMichael EalyIndia EisleyWhen human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrior Selene leads the battle against humankind.Cinema day 2/2 film 3/3
Typical action with gore. I wouldn't personally call it a "real" vampire movie despite it being better than twilight. The werewolves vs vampires thing I dislike and all the werewolves were CGI'd in the way I do not find enjoyable. - DirectorDeborah KampmeierStarsDakota FanningDavid MorsePiper LaurieA drama set in the American South, where a precocious, troubled girl finds a safe haven in the music and movement of Elvis Presley.Avi 1/3
Good warning against sexualised dancing by children, but more a haunting portrayal of a poor girl from an ineffective home who is betrayed by someone who at first cared about her, but gives in to wealth and peer pressure. With a message of the need to recover and not stay a victim. - DirectorChristophe RuggiaStarsVincent RottiersAdèle HaenelRochdy LabidiOrphaned 12-year-old twins Joseph and Chloé have been on the run together. Chloé is autistic, non-verbal and fears being touched. Joseph dearly loves her and dreams she will recover if they find their parents and fight the system.Avi 2/3
Les Diables, in French with subtitles. A controversial but touching tale of a boy and his mentally challenged sister on the run in persuit of their old family home and a cure for her. - DirectorJacques DoillonStarsVictoire ThivisolDelphine SchiltzMatiaz Bureau CatonA four-year-old girl tries to come to terms with the sudden death of her mother.Avi 3/3
This was the best film of the week. Why?
It made me cry. In my view, a realistic story of a little girl whose mother dies but knows that she could be with her again. The people arround her, mostly other children and some adults, have differing views and she is challenged in her understanding of how the world works, against what she experiences herself. - DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them.Lovefilm Disc
Quite nice-to-watch story of the beginnings of the X-Men and Magneto. Including Professor Xavier and Mystique as children, Magneto as a friend, and his journey to becoming an advesary with Mystique on-side. - DirectorJohn HamburgStarsPaul RuddJason SegelRashida JonesFriendless Peter Klaven goes on a series of man-dates to find a Best Man for his wedding. A man about to get married has no friends, so he makes one and they become friends. Not much else to it. - DirectorRobert RodriguezStarsCarlos GallardoConsuelo GómezJaime de HoyosA traveling mariachi is mistaken for a murderous criminal and must hide from a gang bent on killing him.Lovefilm Stream 1/4
Robert Rodriguez' first film, made in the 90's but with the atmosphere and style of a cult 60's-80's movie. I enjoyed it! Elements of gangsters and violence but an innocent story of love at heart. - DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsAlan Van SprangKenneth WelshKathleen MunroeOn an island off the coast of North America, local residents simultaneously fight a zombie epidemic while hoping for a cure to return their un-dead relatives back to their human state.Lovefilm Stream 2/4
Another "of the dead" installment from George A Romero. Yet again, a story of a zombie apocalypse, with social politics at the focus. Some classic zombie gore but also a fresh story, setting. Not bad. - DirectorRichard AyoadeStarsCraig RobertsSally HawkinsPaddy Considine15-year-old Oliver Tate has two objectives: to lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother and an ex-lover who has resurfaced in her life.Lovefilm Stream 3/4

Good action with the best of the now slightly aging actors. - DirectorAlexander PayneStarsGeorge ClooneyShailene WoodleyAmara MillerA land baron tries to reconnect with his two daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.Cinema day 3 film 1/2
Made me cry. Emotional story, rather relentlessly relaxing hawaiian sonudtrack and a George Clooney making me forget he was George Clooney. - DirectorJames BobinStarsAmy AdamsJason SegelChris CooperA Muppet fanatic with some help from his 2 human compatriots must regroup the Muppet gang to stop an avaricious oil mogul from taking down one of their precious life-longing treasures.Cinema day 3 film 2/2
Slow and over-dramatic at times, but building up to the upbeat, uplifting entertainment of The Muppets Show! - DirectorTonino ValeriiStarsGeorge HiltonSalvo RandoneWilliam BergerA mysterious decapitation leads Inspector Peretti into a case of blackmail, deceit, and the unsolved kidnapping of a young girl.Avi
Mystery that built to a surprising finale. Not many violent murders considering the cover but still not bad. - DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action.Lovefilm Stream
I'm not sure why this was a classic, since it is actually so strange, and usually strange films are more cult than popular. Is Travis a hero? A killer? Moral? Insane? Could anyone happen down the route of his life? Or was he uniquely designed? Perhaps this is why it is a classic. Because it takes time to portray a character who has so many contradictory human traits yet ends up doing something out of the confines of human sanity.
The intensely stylish and dramatic shoot off at the end, despite seeing it build up through the film and essentially "seeing it coming" is still a shock in its difference compared to the rest of the film. And the woman at the end... Had he earnt her affection from fame and heroism, when what he'd done was to go down a route of obsession and insanity? Is that something that should lead to a happy end?
I suppose in that sense it portrays the craziness of reality, or simply breaks the usual rules that films follow. Being so undefinable and questionable made this a talked about classic. - DirectorKevin SmithStarsSeth RogenElizabeth BanksCraig RobinsonLifelong platonic friends Zack and Miri look to solve their respective cash-flow problems by making an adult film together. As the cameras roll, however, the duo begin to sense that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought.Lovefilm Disc
Good romance comedy full of blue humour. Not suitable for children or anyone against the concept of pornography, but not actually pornographic! Nudity and porn shooting scenes but actually about more normal core values. - DirectorJulia LeighStarsEmily BrowningRachael BlakeEwen LeslieA haunting portrait of Lucy, a young university student drawn into a mysterious hidden world of unspoken desires.Lovefilm Stream
Wierd but believable descent of one girl into depravity, although I don't know what she really did with all the money she was making. More nudity than I was expecting and the end was undefined, making me feel unsure what the end really was, a first time for not getting a film first time, though the ambiguity was probably intentional. I don't want to ruin the film for anyone by being more specific. - DirectorJames WatkinsStarsDaniel RadcliffeJanet McTeerCiarán HindsA young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers that the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.Cinema
I heard somewhere that the director knew how to do horror. Well aside from some "chills" which were battered at the audience as thickly as the gratuitous "sh** what was that" shots and "boo" shots, there was no substance to the movie and no drawing in enough to have the horror elements effect you.
That said, it's not a bad movie for kids to see for a first experience of horror, since it is rated 12A and stars Harry Potter. I think I appreciated it for what it is, which is a period ghost novel adapted to the screen, which generally don't come out much better any other time.
The "chills" were no different to the feelings I get in any good film, not just scary ones, that let me know that something fundamental containing some form of universal truth is being expressed. Disguising it as scares and chills in such a gratuitous, thoughtless way is in my opinion abusive of the beauty of life and cinema. To disect and draw out those many moments could have given something to learn from and grow with, which makes a real film. - DirectorJohn DuiganStarsSam RockwellKathleen QuinlanMischa BartonWhen Devon, a 10-year-old girl, forges a friendship with Trent, a 21-year-old outsider who mows the neighborhood lawns, things suddenly get very complicated and private.Avi SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
The child actress wasn't as good as many I've seen, and the story only went in the innevitable direction, except for the fairy tale bit at the end which didn't really work for me being as it wasn't built into the message of the movie except for the girls dream.
It might have made more sence if the girl character was 6 rather than 10. And perhaps she should be worrying more about herself since she apparently had problems in the last place they lived, and she had now taken people hostage at gun point and killed a person. So she's probably going to end up in a mental hospital eventually; another reason for the fairytale ending not being that effectual. - DirectorLéa PoolStarsPiper PeraboJessica ParéMischa BartonAfter starting at an upmarket boarding school, a teenage girl forms close friendships with her two older roommates. However, when she discovers that her new friends are lovers she finds herself caught in a complicated situation.Avi
Better than the last film I watched with Mischa barton, but still had an unnecesary end. She had the same annoying unreal personality but this time it was more suited to the character. Again the story went on kind of innevitably. - DirectorSandra GoldbacherStarsEmma WatsonYasmin PaigeLucy BoyntonIn 1930s London, three orphan girls are adopted by their great uncle, who is an eccentric paleontologist, and his niece.Avi
I skimmed through this the first time I got hold of it, spotting some things that looked stereotypical, shallow and hence annoying. After watching the other Harry Potter star in a pretty lame film though, I got the idea to try actually watching it, and when I did, I found it wasn't as terrible as I thought. Still nothing special though.
