100 titles
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanThe aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.Probably the best movie ever in my opinion. Magnificent performance by Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, James Caan and Al Pacino among many others gives this film mark of a classic, film that even such wonderful filmmaker as Coppola is, will hardly surpass.
- DirectorFederico FelliniStarsMagali NoëlBruno ZaninPupella MaggioA series of comedic and nostalgic vignettes set in a 1930s Italian coastal town.Fellini at his best. Amarcord is one of the films that formed a bridge between childhood and adult life. Gem of movie industry, and percieved as such.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMartin SheenMarlon BrandoRobert DuvallA U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.Adaptation of Conrad great novel "Heart of darkness" moved in Vietnam. Simbolic importance of this film (regarding when it's made) is enormous. Apocalypse now is not only film about futility of war, Apocalypse is a film about futility of rationalisation of war. Apocalypse is not only then, whenever you watch this movie it's for now. Because somewhere, somehow, apocalypse is happening now. Film for all time
- DirectorLars von TrierStarsNicole KidmanPaul BettanyLauren BacallA woman on the run from the mob is reluctantly accepted in a small Colorado community in exchange for labor, but when a search visits the town she finds out that their support has a price.Lars von Trier, Great Dane, made this movie in theather setting. He took Nicole Kidman as main lead. She made her best performance to date, and he entered the legend. One of Dogma films, scratching the sourroundings to its minimum. All that really matters are director, camera, actors and story. For everything else, go watch Avatar.
- DirectorJean-Luc GodardStarsEddie ConstantineAnna KarinaAkim TamiroffA U.S. secret agent is sent to the distant space city of Alphaville where he must find a missing person and free the city from its tyrannical ruler.Goddard made an SF movie and he did it good. All that need to be said about it.
- DirectorJohn FordStarsHenry FondaJane DarwellJohn CarradineAn Oklahoma family, driven off their farm by the poverty and hopelessness of the Dust Bowl, joins the westward migration to California, suffering the misfortunes of the homeless in the Great Depression. One of the best social movies, worker movies, movies in general ever made. Love it.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroRobert DuvallThe early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.Sequel to the Godfather saga. Puzzo, Coppola, Nino Rota and Pacino did it again.
- DirectorElia KazanStarsVivien LeighMarlon BrandoKim HunterDisturbed Blanche DuBois moves in with her sister in New Orleans and is tormented by her brutish brother-in-law while her reality crumbles around her.Kowalski and Stanislawski are probably dynamic duo that is guilty for such a masterpiece. Why? Stanislawski method made Brando and Leigh into the characters they were playing. Kazan really didn't have tough job there. Brando at his best, Leigh too and a great play from Tenesee Williams. Of course, some scenes like Stanley Kowalski screaming "Stella" standing on the rain in his wifebeater are unforgettable.
- DirectorBernardo BertolucciStarsMarlon BrandoMaria SchneiderMaria MichiA young Parisian woman meets a middle-aged American businessman who demands their clandestine relationship be based only on sex.Great performance by Brando again; Bertolluci made this movie tingling me after all these years... Strangers in the night, love and passion, insanity and role playing. Tango in Paris.
- DirectorRobert RossenStarsPaul NewmanJackie GleasonPiper LaurieAn up-and-coming pool player plays a long-time champion in a single high-stakes match.Paul Newman as Eddie plays pool. And its not "Color of money"... For me this one is much better. "Hustler", ladies and gentlemen. Paul Newman... nothing was the same after this one.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion. There is a scene in which inmates are drinking beer on the roof of community building. Morgan Freeman then said: "We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like free men. Hell, we could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the lords of all creation. As for Andy - he spent that break hunkered in the shade, a strange little smile on his face, watching us drink his beer. " Enough said. Great motion picture.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoKim Sang-kyungKim Roe-haIn a small Korean province in 1986, two detectives struggle with the case of multiple young women being found raped and murdered by an unknown culprit.Wonderful. Absolutely brilliant. Fascinating. In every aspect.
- DirectorAkira KurosawaIshirô HondaStarsAkira TeraoMitsuko BaishôToshie NegishiA collection of tales based upon eight of director Akira Kurosawa's recurring dreams.Great film. Great message. I will never forget it.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action. If you haven't seen this one, run to your video store. Some scenes are just movie history.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsTippi HedrenSean ConneryMartin GabelMark marries Marnie although she is a habitual thief and has serious psychological problems, and tries to help her confront and resolve them.Hitchcock is a great master, and Sean Connery is great here. Story is perfect. Love it!
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsNathaniel BrownPaz de la HuertaCyril RoyAn American drug dealer living in Tokyo is betrayed by his best friend and killed in a drug deal. His soul, observing the repercussions of his death, seeks resurrection.Gaspar Noe is stunning with this film, you can just watch this neverending escapade of motion picture and ask yourself : What the hell happened?
- DirectorFernando MeirellesKátia LundStarsAlexandre RodriguesLeandro FirminoMatheus NachtergaeleIn the slums of Rio, two kids' paths diverge as one struggles to become a photographer and the other a kingpin.Cidade de Deus opened my eyes into something new and unexpected. Great film... Remembering great story and cinematography.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsTim RothAlexandra Maria LaraBruno GanzA love story wrapped in a mystery. Set in World War II Europe, a professor is changed by a cataclysmic event and explores the mysteries of life.Coppola took short novel of Mircea Eliade and turned it into one of best pictures I've seen. Tim Roth just make you speechless.
- DirectorJean-Jacques BeineixStarsJean-Hugues AngladeBéatrice DalleGérard DarmonA lackadaisical handyman and aspiring novelist tries to support his younger girlfriend as she slowly succumbs to madness. Some movies are just made to be classics. Forever. Period.
- DirectorYôjirô TakitaStarsMasahiro MotokiRyôko HirosueTsutomu YamazakiSoon after buying an expensive cello, Daigo learns that his orchestra is disbanding. He moves back to his hometown with his wife, where he answers an ad for what Daigo thinks is a travel agency but is, in actuality, a mortuary.Departures are never easy. But they are often necessary. You'll be glad to know that this motion picture can prepare you for it.
- DirectorMichael CiminoStarsRobert De NiroChristopher WalkenJohn CazaleAn in-depth examination of the ways in which the Vietnam War impacts and disrupts the lives of several friends in a small steel mill town in Pennsylvania.Same as Betty, made to be classic. As Apocalypse confronts reasons of US intervention in Vietnam. But this cuts it even more personally than Coppola did.
- DirectorSusanne BierStarsMikael PersbrandtTrine DyrholmMarkus RygaardThe lives of two Danish families cross each other, and an extraordinary but risky friendship comes into bud. But loneliness, frailty and sorrow lie in wait.Another anti war movie. Topic of this movie isn't just wars that are led with guns and bombs, it also talks about the wars that are led within ourselves.
- DirectorIngmar BergmanStarsBibi AnderssonLiv UllmannMargaretha KrookA nurse is put in charge of a mute actress and finds that their personae are melding together.Persona is not normal film. That's the reason I like it.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMatthew ModineR. Lee ErmeyVincent D'OnofrioA pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.Kubrick made this just to show that he can make it differently from Apocalypse now and Deer Hunter :)
- DirectorGiuseppe TornatoreStarsPhilippe NoiretEnzo CannavaleAntonella AttiliA filmmaker recalls his childhood when falling in love with the pictures at the cinema of his home village and forms a deep friendship with the cinema's projectionist.Absolutely breathtaking picture. One of the best pieces of new italian cinema; and probably one of the best films in the eighties.
- DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsChoi Min-sikYoo Ji-taeKang Hye-jeongAfter being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.Oldboy is a great Korean film that, although a part of trilogy, functions perfectly as stand alone masterpiece. Recommended to watch, but be careful because after watching this movie you will probably want more similar but won't find anything quite alike.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsJohnny DeppBenicio Del ToroTobey MaguireAn oddball journalist and his psychopathic lawyer travel to Las Vegas for a series of psychedelic escapades.Hunter S. Thompson is maybe the best author I read after Henry Miller, Hunter S. Thompson was a maniac.
Hunter S. Thompson is a character on which Warren Ellis based his "Transmetropolitan" comic book.
In this film there's Johnny Depp acting as Thompson.
But hey, who can tell the difference? - DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJeff BridgesJohn GoodmanJulianne MooreJeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.Best part Jeff Bridges ever did. Enough said, this film is cult, and there's a reason for it.
- DirectorRichard AttenboroughStarsSean ConneryRyan O'NealMichael CaineOperation Market Garden, September 1944: The Allies attempt to capture several strategically important bridges in the Netherlands in the hope of breaking the German lines.Bridge Too Far is focusing on "Operation Market Garden" in WW2. Great acting team-up in this movie. Recommended with a "must".
- DirectorFedor BondarchukStarsArtur SmolyaninovAleksey ChadovKonstantin KryukovA group of Russian army recruits complete training and take their posting in late-1980s Afghanistan, where the insurgents are slowly gaining the upper hand. One of the best Russian movies I watched. After Tarkovsky era at there were great films and series, especially "Brigada". But never quite as this one. Only minus is that, as much as I can presume, this film is much better perceived in post communist countries than in other parts of the world.
- DirectorNikita MikhalkovStarsSergey MakovetskiySergey GarmashApti MagamaevTwelve jurors must decide the fate of a Chechen adolescent charged with murdering his stepfather. One of the best movies I ever seen. Is it easy to decide about somebody's life even when the facts seem obvious? Little Prince from Antoine de Euxpery learns us that "Important is invisible to the eyes" and this movie emphasis on that.
- DirectorBilly WilderStarsFred MacMurrayBarbara StanwyckEdward G. RobinsonA Los Angeles insurance representative lets an alluring housewife seduce him into a scheme of insurance fraud and murder that arouses the suspicion of his colleague, an insurance investigator.Few movies have that good piece of storytelling as "Double Indemnity". Makes you think of it over and over again. Pioneer of "film-noir". Many bad copies are made afterward, but not so good like this masterpiece.
- DirectorJohn WooStarsTony Leung Chiu-waiTakeshi KaneshiroFengyi ZhangThe first chapter of a two-part story centered on a battle fought in China's Three Kingdoms period (220-280 A.D.).Together with its second counterpart this magnificent story is alive within me. Great cinematography, great story and, what's the most important it isn't boring after watching it 4 or 5 times. :)
- DirectorJohn WooStarsTony Leung Chiu-waiTakeshi KaneshiroFengyi ZhangSecond and final part of epic tale about a legendary battle that changed the course of China history.Same as its great predecessor above.
- DirectorJuan José CampanellaStarsRicardo DarínSoledad VillamilPablo RagoA retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later.Argentinian "Oscar" winner, when nobody expected it to do that. For me, that fact aside, great story... makes an impact strong as almost as personal experience.
- DirectorNorman JewisonStarsDenzel WashingtonVicellous ShannonDeborah Kara UngerThe story of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, a boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder, and the people who aided in his fight to prove his innocence. This movie is easily the best performance Denzel Washington ever did. And I like that great Bob Dylan song about the main character. :)
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsHumphrey BogartIngrid BergmanPaul HenreidA cynical expatriate American cafe owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco. Most famous quote in the movie history, great piece of acting, great song and story... Wonderful movie altogether.
- DirectorFrançois TruffautStarsOskar WernerJulie ChristieCyril CusackIn an oppressive future, a fireman whose duty is to destroy all books begins to question his task.Masterpiece book and masterpiece movie. Thank you Mr. Truffaut. :D
- DirectorDamien O'DonnellStarsJames McAvoySteven RobertsonRomola GaraiWhen the kinetic Rory moves into his room in the Carrigmore Residential Home for the Disabled, his effect on the home is immediate. Most telling is his friendship with Michael, a young man with cerebral palsy and nearly unintelligible speech. Somehow, Rory understands Michael, and encourages him to experience life outside the confines of home.Forget political correctness, forget self help books. When it comes to handicapped people and how to approach them; this film is must see. Highly recommended.
- DirectorDerek CianfranceStarsRyan GoslingMichelle WilliamsJohn DomanThe relationship of a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods.Blue Valentine is definitely the best motion picture about forming and deforming a relationship between two people. Michelle Williams is absolutely magnificent here.
- DirectorJohn BoormanStarsNigel TerryHelen MirrenNicholas ClayMerlin the magician helps Arthur Pendragon unite the Britons around the Round Table of Camelot, even as dark forces conspire to tear it apart.Excalibur. No one ever did it like this. Everybody tried to film the legend about Arthur, Camelot and the Knights of round table. This one succeeded.
- DirectorAlejandro JodorowskyStarsAlejandro JodorowskyBrontis JodorowskyJosé LegarretaA mysterious black-clad gunfighter wanders a mystical Western landscape encountering multiple bizarre characters.
- Kid you're seven years old. It's time for you to bury your first toy and a photograph of a mother.
First midnight movie. Great experience. I would personally love to see it in the midnight cinema when it came out. Unfortunately, I'm a bit young for that. - DirectorAleksandr RogozhkinStarsAnni-Kristiina JuusoVille HaapasaloViktor BychkovIn World War II, a Finnish sniper is left chained to a rock by German soldiers, while a captain of the Red Army, en route to his court martial, is almost blown up by Russian planes. A Lapp woman gives shelter to both of them at her farm.Wonderful movie. Communication is always important. Especially when there's a war going. I can't tell anything else without spoiling the movie. So go ahead. Watch it.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsTeresa WrightJoseph CottenMacdonald CareyA teenage girl, overjoyed when her favorite uncle comes to visit the family in their quiet California town, slowly begins to suspect that he is in fact the "Merry Widow" killer sought by the authorities.Hello Mr. Hitchcock. :D I'm clinging on a straw. Shadow of doubt.
- DirectorAng LeeStarsTony Leung Chiu-waiTang WeiJoan ChenDuring World War II era, a young woman, Wang Jiazhi, gets swept up in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with a powerful political figure, Mr. Yee.One of the best Chinese movies I've ever seen. You enter it, and there's no way out of it. Enjoy!
- DirectorJuraj HerzStarsRudolf HrusínskýVlasta ChramostováJana StehnováSet in Central Europe during World War II, a demented cremator believes cremation relieves earthly suffering and sets out to save the world.Morbid, funny and important. Some cinematographic details in this movie are very much before its time. Great movie. What propaganda can do if your ego allows it.
- DirectorElia KazanStarsMarlon BrandoKarl MaldenLee J. CobbAn ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses, including his older brother, as he starts to connect with the grieving sister of one of the syndicate's victims.Very similar to above mentioned "Grapes of Wrath". And very important. Brando is magnificent again here but that's old news when it comes to him.
- DirectorGaspar NoéStarsMonica BellucciVincent CasselAlbert DupontelEvents over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in an underpass tunnel.Gaspar Noe is one of the most important directors of the first decade of 21st century. "Enter the void" and this one will be mentioned in history books of film making for years to come.
- DirectorFatih AkinStarsBirol ÜnelSibel KekilliGüven KiraçWith the intention to break free from the strict familial restrictions, a suicidal young woman sets up a marriage of convenience with a forty-year-old addict, an act that will lead to an outburst of envious love. What I said above for Gaspar Noe, could just as easy be said for Fatih Akin. "Kurz und Schmerzlos" with this one makes dynamic duo of his films. He paralyzes you for the screen, he's great and you can't stand up until the movie is finished.
- DirectorFatih AkinStarsBaki DavrakGürsoy GemecCengiz DanerA Turkish man travels to Istanbul to find the daughter of his father's former girlfriend.I said above how Fatih Akin movies are made. Now I can just pray for a new one fast, because in this one i had to stay connected to the end and make my own conclusions to fill the gaps. That's what I like about Akin, he pulls you in and you have to gasp for air on your own.
