- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims. It didn't do good at the box office, but when did that ever keep a horror fan away! A movie that harkens back to a day when communists were the enemy. Everyone looked around them and wondered if they were "Red". I love the ending dialogue. It is hard to run from Antarctica, and not too many places to hide.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.Monsters from space are not uncommon, however, this one caught the masses off-guard. Not being able to see the threat all around you can be very scary. Pray you don't become part of their reproductive cycle. Oh yeah, there is nowhere to run to, and your too far away for help to arrive.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSigourney WeaverMichael BiehnCarrie HennDecades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.More the merrier!
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again. This movie glorified the slasher genre. The only other known slasher movie previous to this one was Black Christmas (1974). Great use of space and background images to create chills, kill icky girls, and frighten millions for decades to come. Jamie Lee Curtis becomes the quintessential "scream queen".
- DirectorRick RosenthalStarsJamie Lee CurtisDonald PleasenceCharles CyphersWhile Dr. Loomis hunts for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, and The Shape is not far behind her.Trying to run from pure evil with a gimp leg has got to be hard. I've decided to group the sequel movies together. John Carpenter wrote this, however, he didn't want to direct the same movie twice, so he deferred.
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsJamie Lee CurtisJosh HartnettAdam ArkinLaurie Strode, now the dean of a Northern California private school with an assumed name, must battle the Shape one last time, as the life of her own son hangs in the balance.
- DirectorSean S. CunninghamStarsBetsy PalmerAdrienne KingJeannine TaylorA group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer. The original, the first. Nice atmosphere.
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsBetsy PalmerAmy SteelJohn FureyFive years after the events of the first film, a summer camp next to the infamous Camp Crystal Lake is preparing to open, but the legend of Jason is weighing heavy on the proceedings.Jason is all grown up. Nice atmosphere and creepy.
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsDana KimmellTracie SavageRichard BrookerJason Voorhees stalks a group of friends who have just arrived to spend the weekend at a cabin near Crystal Lake.I chose this version because it was personal. This was my first "Friday" experience and I seen it in 3D at the theater with a couple of girlfriends clenching my arms and screaming. A little cheesy, and the music is very 80's, but when you *beep* your pants, it is all worth it. This Halloween copycat slasher has haunted me in my dreams off and on ever since.
- DirectorJoseph ZitoStarsErich AndersonJudie AronsonPeter BartonAfter being announced dead and taken to a morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives, escapes from the hospital, and stalks a group of friends renting a house in the countryside near Crystal Lake. After this one, it went all downhill. Jason turned into a star, and people rooted for him to kill. It was still fun, just not scary.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life. Two words...Johnny Depp. A little dated, but a few scenes have stuck with me over the span of almost 30 years. If you can't hide in your dreams, where can you hide?
- DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampRobert EnglundJf DavisA demonic force has chosen Freddy Krueger as its portal to the real world. Can Heather Langenkamp play the part of Nancy one last time and trap the evil trying to enter our world? The master himself, Wes Craven, returns to breathe new life into the Freddy nightmare.
- DirectorBanjong PisanthanakunParkpoom WongpoomStarsAnanda EveringhamNatthaweeranuch ThongmeeAchita SikamanaA young photographer and his girlfriend discover mysterious shadows in their photographs after a tragic accident. They soon learn that you can not escape your past.Sorry, I haven't seen the American version which I hear is decent. This Thailand gem has a great pace, lots of chills, and very, very creepy. This is arguably the best Asian film, and don't let subtitles scare you away, this one will be sure to please.
- DirectorNeil MarshallStarsShauna MacdonaldNatalie MendozaAlex ReidA caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators. This movie preys on your fears and does so visually and aurally. The dark and claustrophobic, followed by heights spanning a chasm, creepy "unfriendlies", back stabbing girlfriends, and a little psychosis, goes a long way. This film revived the horror genre for me.
- DirectorJames WatkinsStarsDaniel RadcliffeJanet McTeerCiarán HindsA young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers that the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.Five huge chills and sixteen in all! Atmospheric dread done well. A supernatural horror drama not for everyone.
- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsLim Soo-jungYum Jung-ahKim Kap-suAfter being institutionalized in a mental hospital, Su-mi reunites with her sister, Su-yeon, and they return to live at their country home. But strange events plague the house, leading to surprising revelations and a shocking conclusion.Still trying to figure this one out. The Hollywood version was called the uninvited, but this is the original from South Korea. If you're an Asian film fan, this is a must see.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsMarilyn BurnsEdwin NealAllen DanzigerFive friends head out to rural Texas to visit the grave of a grandfather. On the way they stumble across what appears to be a deserted house, only to discover something sinister within. Something armed with a chainsaw.Based on the true story of Ed Gein, who killed women and made a head and torso skin mask out of them. This is not his story, but one even more so depraved. There is a reason most haunted houses chase you around with a buzzing chainsaw, and this is it. I enjoyed the remake as well.
- DirectorMarcus NispelStarsJessica BielJonathan TuckerAndrew BryniarskiAfter picking up a traumatized young hitchhiker, five friends find themselves stalked and hunted by a deformed chainsaw-wielding loon and his family of equally psychopathic killers. The classic legendary tale of one of the sickest family's on film, gets a facelift.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsTed LevineKathleen QuinlanDan ByrdA traveling family falls victim to a group of mutated cannibals in a desert far away from civilization. This movie really takes horror to a personal level. Everyone is game for this killing machine. How would you like to witness your parents or children get tortured and/or killed right before your eyes. The original got praise, but I prefer the remake.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States."Barbara...they're coming to get you Barbara." The first modern day zombie flick. If you can get past the annoying screaming from the hysterical female lead actress, you will find a dark atmospheric horror gem. This one started the popular zombie craze still in full force and effect today. Stay away from the windows!
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.A zombie classic. A little dated now, but the remake was done well too.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsSarah PolleyVing RhamesMekhi PhiferA nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.Just as good as the original, and updated. Almost a different stand alone remake.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsJohn LeguizamoAsia ArgentoSimon BakerThe living dead have taken over the world, and the last humans live in a walled city to protect themselves as they come to grips with the situation. The zombie master returns for his fourth installment. The zombies are learning! "Zombies man, they creep me out." - Dennis Hopper
- DirectorGore VerbinskiStarsNaomi WattsMartin HendersonBrian CoxA journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it.Some of the creepiest cinematography ever put on film. A lot of hair and stutter like strobe effects with an old film footage effect. Don't answer the phone after you watch it and you should be alright.
- DirectorTakashi ShimizuStarsSarah Michelle GellarJason BehrClea DuVallAn American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.Yes, I opted for the American version of the film "Ju-on". This is really the third film in the Japanese series, and I have to admit, I've not seen but the first one. The originals are creepy but probably a little too low budget for my tastes. Sarah Michelle Geller is a hottie so you have a little eye candy to go along with checking out that attic!
