{Film / TV} Theme tunes/songs: best ever! in films & TV series
[[This list is a work in progress, added to when I find time.]]
The themes in this list are not necessarily the most famous theme tunes/songs, although many are. Nor are they the themes that I remember fondly just because that theme tune is so redolent of a particular TV series.
There is so many themes like that - that serve just to bring back memories of a great show of our past - that it would take forever to list them! The theme tune to "Cagney & Lacey" is an example. Or that of "The Good Life". Those themes are a great aid to remembering the TV series. Hearing the theme immediately recalls memories of the series - which is good as of course that is the purpose of a theme tune - but the theme isn't anything marvellous in itself. Not bad, of course. And musically often very good. They are just not outstanding as a theme. They are just an aide memoire. Themes like this become famous just because the series is brilliant, or the title sequence they play to, not the music or song in the theme itself.
Instead, the titles in this list are selected for other reasons. They have been chosen mainly because they are the themes that are the most appealing in a musical sense. In other words the themes stand out. Mainly for one of the following reasons, or indeed all three:
(i) purely for their musicality: the melody, the way the piece is knit together, &/or the lyrics or sound effects
(ii) an original sound concept within the theme
(iii) because they are marvellously evocative in putting across the key concept of the TV show/film that they represent.
Such themes as this don't just represent the series, as they are supposed to; instead they encapsulate the series above & beyond the average theme tune.
