- DirectorRob MarshallStarsEmily BluntLin-Manuel MirandaBen WhishawA few decades after her original visit, Mary Poppins, the magical nanny, returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives. Not a bad movie; I enjoyed it. However, it still wasn’t a patch on the first one 7/10
- DirectorHaifaa Al-MansourStarsElle FanningBel PowleyOwen RichardsLife and facts of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, who at 16 met 21 year old poet Percy Shelley, resulting in the writing of Frankenstein.Great cast, beautifully shot movie. Based on the life of the Frankenstein author; she had quite a hard life....if you’d written it you’d say it was too far fetched. For me the stand out (yet fairly brief performance) was by Tom Sturridge as Lord Byron; I think romantic poet was a psudeonym for selfish dick (Percy Shelly seems to be similar). As a film it’s not completley historically accurate; but it sticks pretty much to her life. 8.5/10
- DirectorJosie RourkeStarsSaoirse RonanMargot RobbieJack LowdenMary Stuart's (Saoirse Ronan's) attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), Queen of England, finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.I absolutely loved this; the settings, costumes and cast were superb. Saoirse knocks it out the park. I know there were a few bits that they used poetic licensing with; but as far as a movie goes it was brilliant. Mary was a strong woman in a mans world. Margot Robbie was excellent as Elizabeth; the make up department excelled; my only slight bug bear is that Elizabeth seems a little weaker in some situations than I’d have liked. 9.5/10
- DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsSteve CarellThe story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that are still felt today.Very inciteful film on American politics and how devious it can be. Filmed in almost a documentary style (in part) Bale is superb as Cheney; but Adams is equally superb as his wife (and driving force). The make up department did a spot on job; Rockwell is made up the doue of George W. Bush. A lot of factors can sadly still eminate in today’s climate (it’s also scary that potus can have unitary control). No wonder in his Golden Globe speech Bale said he channelled Satan for this role. Great but heavy film 8/10
- DirectorRon HowardStarsAlden EhrenreichWoody HarrelsonEmilia ClarkeDuring an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance.I do love Star Wars.... however, for me it didn’t have much depth to it. It was easy to watch but not the best in the saga. 6.5/10
- DirectorKenneth BranaghStarsKenneth BranaghJudi DenchIan McKellenA look at the final days in the life of renowned playwright William Shakespeare.Story telling the last few years of Shakespeare’s life; back in Stratford upon Avon. I enjoyed the acting; superb cast. Costumes and setting felt authentic. However, it was a little odd. It felt to me like the cameraman was filming a play whiles laying on the floor....the cinematography was a little bizarre. My mum thoroughly enjoyed it though. 6/10
- DirectorJames KentStarsKeira KnightleyNed WillsPandora ColinPost World War II, a British colonel and his wife are assigned to live in Hamburg during the post-war reconstruction, but tensions arise with the German who previously owned the house.Beautifully shot; superb sets and costumes. However, I felt the characterisation lacked a little depth; I feel it would have been better made into a mini series rather than a film. 6.5/10
- DirectorOliver StoneStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittShailene WoodleyMelissa LeoThe NSA's illegal surveillance techniques are leaked to the public by one of the agency's employees, Edward Snowden, in the form of thousands of classified documents distributed to the press.Slow to start but became interesting. I haven’t followed this closely in the press....but this film
Does make you think how closely you’re being followed online. I admire him for having the courage to speak up. Don’t watch it if you’re paranoid lol.8/10 - DirectorSusanna FogelStarsJustin TherouxKate McKinnonBlanka Györfi-TóthBest friends Audrey and Morgan unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of them discovers that the boyfriend who dumped her was actually a spy.Totally over the top comedy action movie... it was light hearted and I actually enjoyed it. 8/10
- DirectorTodd Strauss-SchulsonStarsRebel WilsonLiam HemsworthAdam DevineA young woman disenchanted with love mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy.Fancied something light to watch....romcom with rebel Wilson; who plays a cynical architect who has a bang on the head and ends up in her own romcom....completely absurd but easy to watch. 6.5/10
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California. One of those films where not much happens; a headstrong teen negotiating her last year of high school and her turbulent relationship with her mum. 7/10
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMark RylanceRuby BarnhillPenelope WiltonAn orphan little girl befriends a benevolent giant who takes her to Giant Country, where they attempt to stop the man-eating giants that are invading the human world.Beautifully shot film; great for families and very heart warming. But as with any Roald Dahl adaptations there’s always a scary fiend to fight. I just happened to have the tv on the right channel as it started and glad I’m did; one of my favourite childhood stories brought to vivid life 9/10
- DirectorDexter FletcherStarsTaron EgertonJamie BellRichard MaddenA musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John's breakthrough years.Brilliant film; Taron was superb as Elton john; such a diverse and convincing actor. Great cast (although Bryce Dallas Howard irritated me; not because of the type of character but the insane pouting and felt like over acting). Loved Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin. Great music; I liked that that it was a little ‘surreal’ in places. 10/10
- DirectorJoe BerlingerStarsLily CollinsZac EfronAngela SarafyanA chronicle of the crimes of Ted Bundy from the perspective of Liz, his longtime girlfriend, who refused to believe the truth about him for years.I enjoyed this movie; I liked that it was from
The perspective of Bundy’s girlfriend. It was good to see how he charmed the public; and how easy it is to get fooled by an attractive clever person. 8.5/10 - DirectorJon M. ChuStarsConstance WuHenry GoldingMichelle YeohThis contemporary romantic comedy based on a global bestseller follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's family.Absolutely loved this.... it does what it says on the tin ‘crazy rich Asians’ . Ostentatious, glamorous and easy to watch. Just loved it; could watch again. 10/10
- DirectorDrew PearceStarsJodie FosterSofia BoutellaDave BautistaSet in riot-torn, near-future Los Angeles, 'Hotel Artemis' follows the Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only emergency room for criminals.Dark movie about a hospital for criminals disguised as a hotel. Some good action; could have more depth...Jeff goldblum was highly under used. 7/10
- DirectorDaisy AitkensStarsDavid TennantNina SosanyaLucy PunchOlivia and Alex are a lesbian couple who, despite their age difference, are very much in love. As the question of pregnancy rears its head and their neighbor John befriends them, they both start making some truly disastrous decisions.A good cast of British actors; touching and funny film about a lesbian couple who become pregnant at the same time. Had some funny lines (particularly from David Tennant)....although the film could have had more depth in some areas 7/10
- DirectorLisa LangsethStarsAlicia VikanderEva GreenCharlotte RamplingSisters in conflict travelling through Europe toward a mystery destination. The most ironic name for a film; don’t watch if you’re in need of cheering up. Slow film and for me the best part was Charles Dance 4/10
- DirectorKyle NewacheckStarsAdam SandlerJennifer AnistonLuke EvansA New York cop and his wife go on a European vacation to reinvigorate the spark in their marriage, but end up getting framed and on the run for the death of an elderly billionaire.Over the top Agatha Christie type parody.... exaggerated acting by some famous names. Still not a fan of Sandler. Doesn’t take many brain cells to watch but nothing woes. 5.5/10
- DirectorMalcolm D. LeeStarsKevin HartTiffany HaddishRob RiggleA group of high school dropouts is forced to attend night school in hopes that they will pass the GED exam to finish high school.Comedy about a high school drop out going back to get qualifications. Easy to watch, nothing outstanding. 6/10
- DirectorFranklin J. SchaffnerStarsGregory PeckLaurence OlivierJames MasonA Nazi hunter in Paraguay discovers a sinister and bizarre plot to rekindle the Third Reich. An interesting ‘what if’ movie.... based on a novel about Mengele in South America after the war.... of course as you’d expect Laurence Olivier was superb. I felt a little let down by Gregory Peck’s performance; especially with his reputation. There’s a boy in the film whose character is annoying (which is the aim); but by god is he a wooden actor; you can tell he’s the son of the director (or producer). The film was set well and does make you think; but I wasn’t bowled over 7/10
- DirectorAri SandelStarsAdam DevineAlexandra DaddarioShelley HennigNoah meets Avery at a Halloween party and falls in love but gets friend-zoned. 3 years later, she's engaged to someone else. Noah returns in a time machine to fix things.Distinctly average and predictable ‘rom-com’.... lacked depth in the storyline and you could see what’s coming a mile off 4/10
- DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonPedro PascalAshton SandersRobert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?Loved this film; some good action. Denzel Washington is a legend. 8.5/10
- DirectorGavin HoodStarsHelen MirrenAaron PaulAlan RickmanCol. Katherine Powell, a military officer in command of an operation to capture terrorists in Kenya, sees her mission escalate when a girl enters the kill zone triggering an international dispute over the implications of modern warfare. Not a bad action movie 6.5/10
- DirectorJennifer Kaytin RobinsonStarsGina RodriguezLaKeith StanfieldBrittany SnowAfter a devastating break up on the eve of her cross-country move, Jenny enjoys one last NYC adventure with her two best pals. Someone Great is a romantic comedy about love, loss, growth and the everlasting bond of female friendship.Easy watch romcom 6.5/10
