3D movies which are worth watching in 3D
I love 3D, but most 3D movies are a real disappointment, especially those converted post-production. Here is my list of titles where I felt 3D enhanced the viewing experience. In reverse order, of course!

- DirectorSteven QualeStarsNicholas D'AgostoEmma BellArlen EscarpetaDeath returns to claim the lucky survivors of a deadly bridge collapse in this fifth frightening installment in the series.Horror lends itself to having things come out of the screen to assault your eyes: FD5 (and FD4) both did this rather well.
- DirectorAlexandre AjaStarsElisabeth ShueJerry O'ConnellRichard DreyfussAfter a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents.I do understand that including this movie on the basis of Kelly Brook's nude underwater ballet is not very classy of me, but it's really effective in 3D. Honest.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsJim CarreyGary OldmanColin FirthAn animated retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions.Robert Zemeckis' CGI has worrying moments (where characters almost resemble those who voice them) but the 3D can't be faulted, especially the wonderful aerial opening shot.
- DirectorJon M. ChuStarsSharni VinsonRick MalambriAdam SevaniA tight-knit group of New York City street dancers find themselves pitted against the world's best hip hop dancers in a high-stakes showdown.Dance seems to be a genre which is very suited to 3D presentation. This one is as good as any.
- DirectorGeorge MillerGary EckDavid PeersStarsElijah WoodRobin WilliamsPinkMumble's son, Erik, is struggling to realize his talents in the Emperor Penguin world. Meanwhile, Mumble and his family and friends discover a new threat their home -- one that will take everyone working together to save them.A film which I felt was rather better than its predecessor features some spectacular 3D work.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity. For a post-production conversion, this is very effective, and enhances the superheroics in the sky no end.
- DirectorPeter LordJeff NewittStarsHugh GrantSalma HayekJeremy PivenPirate Captain sets out on a mission to defeat his rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz for the Pirate of the year Award. The quest takes Captain and his crew from the shores of Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. This Aardman animation film is entertaining in its own right, but the 3D is pretty good too.
- DirectorPatrick LussierStarsNicolas CageAmber HeardWilliam FichtnerA vengeful father escapes from hell and chases after the men who killed his daughter and kidnapped his granddaughter.A preposterous "horror" movie with eye-popping 3D. The sort of film which 3D was made for.
- DirectorRob LettermanConrad VernonStarsReese WitherspoonRainn WilsonStephen ColbertA woman transformed into a giant after she is struck by a meteorite on her wedding day becomes part of a team of monsters sent in by the U.S. government to defeat an alien mastermind trying to take over Earth. An entertaining CGI feature which makes good use of 3D.
- DirectorEric DarnellTom McGrathConrad VernonStarsBen StillerJada Pinkett SmithChris RockThe Madagascar animals join a struggling European circus to get back to New York, but find themselves being pursued by a psychotic animal-control officer.Vast amounts of visual invention on show here, and 3D simply adds to it.
- DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsAnna FarisBill HaderBruce CampbellA local scientist is often regarded as a failure until he invents a machine that can make food fall from the sky. But little does he know that things are about to take a turn for the worst. This film is a visual feast (sorry!) even without 3D, but there are some spectacular sequences which are designed for the depth provided by 3D.
- DirectorSarah SmithBarry CookStarsJames McAvoyJim BroadbentBill NighySanta's clumsy son Arthur sets out on a mission with Grandsanta to give out a misplaced present to a young girl in less than two hours on Christmas Day.Some of the 3D sequences are breathtaking.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsJamie BellAndy SerkisDaniel CraigIntrepid reporter Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a treasure hunt for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. As if you couldn't guess, Spielberg has the full potential of 3D within his grasp right from the first frame.
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCarey MulliganJoel EdgertonA writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.Baz Luhrman uses 3D to enhance visual spectacle, perhaps inappropriately, but undeniably eye-catchingly.
- DirectorJack ArnoldStarsRichard CarlsonJulie AdamsRichard DenningA strange prehistoric beast lurks in the depths of the Amazonian jungle. A group of scientists try to capture the animal and bring it back to civilization for study.A black and white horror feature from the 50s where the live action 3D cinematography adds an amazing amount of depth. See it, and wonder why all 3D films aren't filmed like this.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsAsa ButterfieldChloë Grace MoretzChristopher LeeIn 1931 Paris, an orphan living in the walls of a train station gets wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton.Scorsese gets it.
- DirectorAng LeeStarsSuraj SharmaIrrfan KhanAdil HussainA young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.Visually spectacular 3D showcase, but otherwise rather empty.
- DirectorNathan GrenoByron HowardStarsMandy MooreZachary LeviDonna MurphyThe magically long-haired Rapunzel has spent her entire life in a tower, but now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.Hugely enjoyable fairytale with knockout 3D
- DirectorPete DocterBob PetersonStarsEdward AsnerJordan NagaiJohn Ratzenberger78-year-old Carl Fredricksen travels to Paradise Falls in his house equipped with balloons, inadvertently taking a young stowaway. One of the best pieces of cinema ever, with 3D adding enormously.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverA paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home. There is no better demonstration of 3D in cinema.
- DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking. If you can manage to see this in 3D, please try to. It's a good film anyway, but 3D really enhances the sense of vastness of being in space.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsSam NeillLaura DernJeff GoldblumA pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.A classic film, and a first-rate post conversion where the incredibly effective 3D adds a great deal.
