- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.Catching Fire was certainly not in my most anticipated list of films for 2013. I didn't like it's predecessor, unfortunately. The shaky cam, lack of faith in various sections to the source material and the average pacing made for a disappointing book-to-film conversion. Luckily, Catching Fire makes up for pretty much all of it's predecessors mistakes, with great pacing, performances that outshine the originals, brutally awesome action and good direction. This film has to be one of my favourite films of the year, for the improvements that this film has included, and the fact that this film is one of the best book-to-film conversions I've ever seen. Sequels don't often get better than this.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoZoe SaldanaAfter the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.JJ Abrams succeeded in many ways with this sequel to 2009's Star Trek reboot. The action here is much better than the original, and the inclusion of the brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch was perfect. I didn't find the pacing anywhere near as good as the original, unfortunately. Despite this, I did thoroughly enjoy this sequel, and that's why it earns this place on the list.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanWill Yun LeeTao OkamotoWolverine comes to Japan to meet an old friend whose life he saved years ago, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving yakuza and mutants.I'll take this sequel over X-Men Origins: Wolverine any day! The Wolverine took us back to classic Wolverine, with some brutal action, a pretty interesting plot and an awesome performance by Hugh Jackman. He only seems to be getting younger within these films, it seems. Have you seen his abs?! As well as all this, the visual effects are certainly much better than the previous installment. For god's sake, the claws look real here! This sequel did what a sequel is meant to do; improve upon the first installment, as well as make tons more money!
- DirectorJustin LinStarsVin DieselPaul WalkerDwayne JohnsonHobbs has Dominic and Brian reassemble their crew to take down a team of mercenaries, but Dominic unexpectedly gets sidetracked with facing his presumed deceased girlfriend, Letty. The Fast And Furious franchise has slowly discovered what it really is: a fun, exciting, over the top set of films which allows you to turn your brain off. The film knows exactly what it is, and has certainly embraced that, to create action films which certainly don't try to do too much. Fast And Furious 6 is one of the best in the franchise, thanks to it's crazy stunts and decent performances. It makes for a wonderful installment into this set of films, one that shall delight moviegoers young and old.
- DirectorAlan TaylorStarsChris HemsworthNatalie PortmanTom HiddlestonWhen the Dark Elves attempt to plunge the universe into darkness, Thor must embark on a perilous and personal journey that will reunite him with doctor Jane Foster.Whilst I gave this installment into the Marvel Cinematic Universe a negative rating, I won't deny that it did further the character Thor by miles. I found I liked this sequel over the original, which failed on many levels, in my opinion. The humor here was better, the action for the most part was damn awesome and Chris Hemsworth has really made Thor his own.
