- DirectorDavid AyerStarsJake GyllenhaalMichael PeñaAnna KendrickShot documentary-style, this film follows the daily grind of two young police officers in LA who are partners and friends and what happens when they meet criminal forces greater than themselves.End of Watch was my favourite movie of 2012 because it was so incredibly realistic and engrossing, that I couldn't get the movie out of my mind for weeks. While some may have criticised it's shaky cam format, I embraced it, and saw it as a way of furthering the realism of the film. The acting in this movie is brilliant, and there is some incredible chemistry between the two mains, as well as great performances from the overall ensemble. While End of Watch may have more problems with it's direction than other movies on this list, it is the movie that hit me the hardest at the end. Brilliant film making.
- DirectorStephen ChboskyStarsLogan LermanEmma WatsonEzra MillerCharlie, a 15-year-old introvert, enters high school and is nervous about his new life. When he befriends his seniors, he learns to cope with his friend's suicide and his tumultuous past.Perks of Being a Wallflower is a movie that hits me hard, because the problems this movie explores relate to my kind of age. Everything that Logan Lerman's character goes through is incredibly well thought out, well executed. The ensemble is really well cast as well as the main, with biggest credits going to the supporting female and male, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller. The themes explored are all reminiscent of my own experiences, and the cinematography was exceptionally good. Perks is also directed by the writer of the book of the same name, which is something we don't generally see in Hollywood, and the director, Stephen Chbosky deserves top marks. The Perks is a must watch feel good movie.
- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsJoaquin PhoenixPhilip Seymour HoffmanAmy AdamsA Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future - until he is tantalized by the Cause and its charismatic leader. The Master is Paul Thomas Anderson's next masterpiece. It is a chilling tale, that while reminiscent of real worldly events, is incredibly done. The Master stars Joaquin Phoenix in a truly crazy role, opposite the incredible Philip Seymour Hoffman. These two men give the performances of the year, and possibly ever, showing how acting is done. Their back and forth is interesting, and intense and really adds so much depth to the film. While the plot may be difficult to grasp at times, it definitely explains the movie well enough, so that you don't have to go back and watch the film a second time, just to understand what was going on. The cinematography is brilliant in The Master, and it makes the moving just more engrossing. Some of the long shots, during Phoenix and Hoffman's back and forth, are just absolutely incredible. The Master is confusing at times, but you will not regret the incredible journey it takes you on.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsDaniel CraigJavier BardemNaomie HarrisJames Bond's loyalty to M is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. When MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.James Bond is back! Skyfall is directed by Sam Mendes, who really takes the operative to new highs. The plot is very well handled, and Daniel Craig is fantastic again, in his role as 007. Judi Dench and Javier Bardem are both absolutely brilliant in this film, and the villain is incredibly menacing, which adds so much to the film. The action scenes are very well done, and Bond feels like a true badass every time he lands a punch. The direction provided by Sam Mendes is very well welcomed, and the movie never felt like it slowed down, in a good way, until the credits started rolling. This is how an action film should be made!
- DirectorAng LeeStarsSuraj SharmaIrrfan KhanAdil HussainA young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.Life of Pi is a movie directed by Ang Lee, who hasn't been releasing many movies too recently. Life of Pi is his first movie since Taking Woodstock in 2009, which came out to mixed reviews. Life of Pi has some incredible cinematography, some brilliant acting, outstanding visual effects, and has a really strong message, that two beings, no matter the differences, will work together for survival. It is an uplifting movie, a movie that takes it's time. I don't feel like Ang Lee was trying to rush the movie in any sense. He crafts an intelligent story, that while some will see as a spiritual bananza, I saw as a survival story, that has spiritual aspects mixed in. And really, this is the beauty of Life of Pi, it is up to you to interpret it. You have to be the one that says what Life of Pi is about. And every single persons journey with this movie will be different in some way or another. I feel like Life of Pi is like a classical piece of music. It is slow, but it is incredibly powerful if you take the time to listen, feel and digest the piece.
