- DirectorBen AffleckStarsBen AffleckBryan CranstonJohn GoodmanActing under the cover of a Hollywood producer scouting a location for a science fiction film, a CIA agent launches a dangerous operation to rescue six Americans in Tehran during the U.S. hostage crisis in Iran in 1979.This movie literally had me at the edge of my seat for nearly its whole run time Even though I knew how the events would play out, Ben Affleck does a great job of creating tension. His direction in the film is impeccable and the Academy should be ashamed of themselves for not nominating this amazing director. This movie has everything from humor, to drama, to a love story, to action and it’s all thanks to its director. I adore this film and hope it all the best come this February.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsBradley CooperJennifer LawrenceRobert De NiroAfter a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.The most feel good movie of the year. David O’ Russell takes the Romantic Comedy genre and turns it on its head. From great writing to acting this movie is fantastic all around. It is a breath of fresh air and a blast to watch. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley cooper give their best performances to date and it’s great seeing Robert De Niro in an actually good movie after a long time.
- DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.A super fun and touching story. This movie has it all. The characters are likable, the animation is gorgeous, and the story is deep. However, more than anything, it is incredibly smart. The jokes hit one after another, you might miss some because you’re laughing to much to notice. Not just for gamers, but for people who enjoy films that make them feel.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsJack BlackShirley MacLaineMatthew McConaugheyIn small-town Texas, an affable mortician strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow, though when she starts to become controlling, he goes to great lengths to separate himself from her grasp.A gem that got overlooked in this amazing year of films. It is a very creative take on real life events. The director does a good job of weaving us through this story and being able to sympathies with the main character even though he does an unspeakable act. Jack Black gives probably his finest performance in this film. He’s funny, witty, and really likable. The script is no short of wits itself.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittBruce WillisEmily BluntIn 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination. The most original movie in years. This movie has everything from compelling characters, to high octane action, to great acting and an amazing style. It’s fresh and highly unpredictable. I never knew where the film was headed and when it ended, it was very satisfying.
- DirectorJoss WhedonStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansScarlett JohanssonEarth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are going to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.Probably the most fun in the theaters I’ve had in years. The cast is wonderful and Joss Whedon gives each character a chance to shine. The visuals are impressive and the action is intense. It is a pure joy ride through and through.
- DirectorPeter RamseyStarsHugh JackmanAlec BaldwinIsla FisherWhen the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world. The most beautiful looking CGI animated movie I’ve ever seen. This movie really touches the kids in all of us. The story may be simple, but the emotions are complex. The characters are imaginative and a blast to see on screen. They’ll have you laughing one second and crying the next. I really hope this film will be fondly remembered over the years.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsDenzel WashingtonNadine VelazquezDon CheadleTroubling questions arise after airline pilot Whip Whitaker makes a miracle landing after a mid-air catastrophe.Well directed and filled with energy, this movie soars. Add Denzel Washington to the mix and this film leaves the stratosphere. It has a good message that it doesn’t hit us over the head with. The crash sequence is one of the most memorable and technically impressive scenes of the year.
- DirectorBenh ZeitlinStarsQuvenzhané WallisDwight HenryLevy EasterlyFaced with both her hot-tempered father's fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love.An atmospheric and beautifully put together live action fairy tale that tells an uplifting tale. The Director does a great job of presenting imagery that aids the story. A great performance by the new comer Quvenzhané Wallis, who has a great future ahead of her. She touches out heart and the optimist in all of us and for that this is winner.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsDaniel Day-LewisSally FieldDavid StrathairnAs the Civil War rages on, U.S President Abraham Lincoln struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on his decision to emancipate the slaves. This film is just a brilliantly well put together film. From its cinematography to the acting, it is beautiful. Daniel Day-Lewis gives an amazing performance and truly embodies the “Lincoln” we’ve read about in our history books. The supporting cast is great and they go toe to toe with Day-Lewis, especially Sally Fields and Tommy Lee Jones, who I hope win the Oscars for Supporting Actress and Actor respectably.
