- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsMichael B. JordanMelonie DiazOctavia SpencerThe story of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008.This film was my favorite movie of 2013 from the moment I first watched it. It has everything we want from a film, a true story, an underdog we can root for, amazing performances from the entire cast, and an emotional roller coaster that keeps us at the edge of our seat even though we know the conclusion. Michael B. Jordan gives a truly amazing performance and hopefully he and this film get some well deserved recognition during the Oscars.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsDaniel BrühlChris HemsworthOlivia WildeThe merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.I LOVE this film! From it’s impressive directing to it’s engaging story, everything about this film works. I hope this film gets the recognition it deserves as it is one of the most exhilarating films of 2013.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem. If you know me, I am a huge fan of the first “The Hunger Games” and its main character Katniss. Well, this sequel took everything that was great about the first film and made it so much better. It has a deeper story, the side characters are more fleshed out, the score is more satisfying, and the directing is better.
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsEmma ThompsonTom HanksAnnie Rose BuckleyAuthor P.L. Travers reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney, who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins books for the big screen. This a film that exemplifies Walt Disney Studio as an entertainment corporation and why we as viewers go to the movies. It’s nostalgic, whimsical, magical, very entertaining, and emotionally satisfying. It is a great companion piece to the brilliant “Mary Poppins” and we get a better sense of why this film is so important to so many people. Emma Thompson gives a great performance that will give Cate Blanchett a run for her money.
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsBruce DernWill ForteJune SquibbAn aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.A whimsical adventure of a father and son as they learn more about each other and the meaning of life. Alexander Payne’s laid back directing and writing style makes mundane and ordinary life moments feel interesting and unforgettable. The idea to make this film in black and white was an amazing decision as it is gorgeous and extraordinary from a visual standpoint.
- DirectorChris BuckJennifer LeeStarsKristen BellIdina MenzelJonathan GroffFearless optimist Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.A beautiful Disney Animated classic that tells a different type of love story and has one of the best soundtracks of any recent Disney movie. “Let It Go” sequence alone is worth the watch and Elsa is one of, if not, the most complex Disney princess to date. The animation is gorgeous, the characters are great, and overall it is such a relatable story for anyone.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. The most entertaining film of the year. A three hour long film that manages to maintain a consistent high of energy through it’s entire run time, never once failing to deliver a laugh. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio make a winning team and hopefully we’ll see Leo walk away with an Oscar this year as this is his best performance to date.
- DirectorBaz LuhrmannStarsLeonardo DiCaprioCarey MulliganJoel EdgertonA writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.One of the most visually and technically impressive movies of the year this film works for me on every level. From a great cast to an appropriate soundtrack, I was in “awe” of this film the whole time.
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need. The best screenplay of the year that bolsters a bunch of thought provoking and realistic ideas of love and the extent of the human condition. Directed whimsically with a melancholy tone, a sense of a realistic future, and great performances from the whole cast, this is a movie that will bring up some interesting discussions.
- DirectorWoody AllenStarsCate BlanchettAlec BaldwinPeter SarsgaardA New York socialite, deeply troubled and in denial, arrives in San Francisco to impose upon her sister. She looks like a million dollars but isn't bringing money, peace or love. This is a brilliantly well written character study of a woman who tries to hard and thinks she’s better than everyone else. Cate Blanchett gives an amazing performance and I think she’ll win the Oscar. This is also my favorite Woody Allen film and that’s saying something.
