- DirectorJohn HughesStarsEmilio EstevezJudd NelsonMolly RingwaldFive high school students meet in Saturday detention and discover how they have a great deal more in common than they thought. Its deconstruction of stereotypical characters and its emphasis on dialogue were a treat to watch. While some of the comedic bits seemed a bit out of place, I overall enjoyed the film and understand its significance for teen media.
Watched September 2nd, 2018 - DirectorPeyton ReedStarsKirsten DunstEliza DushkuJesse BradfordA champion high school cheerleading squad discovers its previous captain stole all their best routines from an inner-city school and must scramble to compete at this year's championships. This didn't hold up as much as I remembered when I rewatched it, but it's a classic for me. The cast was fantastic and it had some thought-provoking commentary on the effects of race in competitions (not necessarily related to cheer)
- DirectorMark RosmanStarsHilary DuffChad Michael MurrayJennifer CoolidgeRoutinely exploited by her wicked stepmother, the downtrodden Samantha Montgomery is excited about the prospect of meeting her Internet beau at the school's Halloween dance.Really solid take on "Cinderella" with solid leads and some good laughs. Not sure if it would hold up
Rewatched a bunch of times on ABC Family
Written 4/8/19 - DirectorWill GluckStarsEmma StoneAmanda BynesPenn BadgleyWhen Olive lies to her best friend about losing her virginity to one of the college boys, a girl overhears their conversation. Soon, her story spreads across the entire school like wildfire.I believe this was my first Emma Stone film. She did a solid job, and it was an interesting take on "The Scarlet Letter" for the modern-day teen
- DirectorGil JungerStarsHeath LedgerJulia StilesJoseph Gordon-LevittA high-school boy, Cameron, cannot date Bianca until her anti-social older sister, Kat, has a boyfriend. So, Cameron pays a mysterious boy, Patrick, to charm Kat.I definitely watched this, probably in the dorms. I recognize scenes but don't remember much of outside of the poem scene and the serenade scene. Could use a rewatch but rated for now
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonKaren GillanKevin HartFour teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.I watched this primarily to see Jack Black, and while it certainly didn't blow me away and had fairly cliche story beats, it was still an all right watch. I still maintain that a sequel/reboot of the franchise was unnecessary though
Watched August 16, 2020 with family - DirectorAndy FickmanStarsAmanda BynesLaura RamseyChanning TatumWhen her brother decides to ditch for a couple weeks, Viola heads over to his elite boarding school, disguised as him, and proceeds to fall for his school's star soccer player, and soon learns she's not the only one with romantic troubles.Watched at a friend's apartment. Relied mostly on embarrassing humor, but it was pretty entertaining and an interesting take on "Twelfth Night"
- DirectorAmy HeckerlingStarsAlicia SilverstoneStacey DashBrittany MurphyShallow, rich and socially successful Cher is at the top of her Beverly Hills high school's pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other.Watched on February 22nd, 2017. I liked Brittany Murphy, considering I'm not too familiar with her work aside from "Girl, Interrupted". The fashion was fun to look at, but I didn't really like Paul Rudd's character
A cult classic though, I can't knock it too much - DirectorJoe NussbaumStarsAmanda BynesSara PaxtonMatt LongA modern retelling of Snow White set against students in their freshman year of college in the greek system.Watched in theaters
I might have been a little young for this one, but it was entertaining, and I like Amanda Bynes in pretty much everything (haven't seen anything since her "freak out" several years ago though, so who knows anymore - DirectorPeter HutchingsStarsVictoria JusticeEden SherAshley RickardsAfter falling victim to a humiliating prank by the high school Queen Bee, best friends and world-class geeks, Mindy and Jodi, decide to get their revenge by uniting the outcasts of the school against her and her circle of friends.I've been waiting to watch this since I heard about it three years ago, and it obviously didn't live up to the hype, because my tastes are a bit different now. I think it was a fine teen flick, but it wasn't particularly groundbreaking (I feel like the plot's been done before and most of the characters seemed stereotypical). I liked the cast at least, but wouldn't necessarily recommend it
Watched September 8th, 2017 - DirectorSteve RashStarsHayden PanettiereJake McDormanJoJo WrightA transfer student to a rough high school tries joining the cheer-leading squad and she not only faces off against the head cheerleader, but against her former school in preparation for a cheer-off competition.Definitely remember this the second most out of the franchise; I liked Hayden Panettiere a lot
- DirectorBille WoodruffStarsChristina MilianVanessa BornGabrielle DennisLina Cruz and her family move from the urban streets of East Los Angeles to the sunny beach town of Malibu, where at her new school, she attempts to beat competitive cheer coach Avery in the Spirit Championships.I think they did the best job (aside from the first film) at more or less developing the cast, but the formula was getting a bit tired by this point. Definitely not bad, just not as "magical" or whatever as the first one
- DirectorCatherine HardwickeStarsKristen StewartRobert PattinsonBilly BurkeWhen Bella Swan moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest, she falls in love with Edward Cullen, a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108-year-old vampire.Watched in theaters
Kristen Stewart was a bit lackluster for me, but I liked Taylor Lautner's hair quite a bit. This turned the rest of my family off of Pattinson and Stewart, but I don't necessarily mind either of them anymore
Influenced pop culture and teen literature a lot during this time - DirectorKay CannonStarsLeslie MannJohn CenaIke BarinholtzThree parents try to stop their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night.A good amount of heart with some decent humor (though definitely overly crude at times). I liked this primarily for the stellar adult cast, but Gideon Adlon was a notable standout amongst the kids. This is a great casual watch but not something I see myself seeking out again.
Watched February 6, 2024 - DirectorSteve RashStarsAshley BensonCassandra ScerboNoel AreizagaAt Camp Spirit Thunder, high school cheer leaders compete. The red team/Sharks' cutie, Carson, and blue team/Jets' hunk, Penn, are in love. Does that make them archenemies like the Sharks and Jets?I remember the opposing team more than the actual team (namely Jennifer Tisdale). I don't remember much about it, but it was decent
- DirectorDennie GordonStarsAmanda BynesColin FirthKelly PrestonAn American teenager learns that her father is a wealthy British politician running for office. Although she is eager to find him, she realizes it could cause a scandal and cost him the election.I believe I watched this on VHS; don't remember anything about it aside from the scene where she messes with the guards
- DirectorJohn HughesStarsMatthew BroderickAlan RuckMia SaraA popular high school student, admired by his peers, decides to take a day off from school and goes to extreme lengths to pull it off, to the chagrin of his Dean, who'll do anything to stop him. This is apparently the quintessential 80s film, but it didn't do much for me when I saw it. Maybe a rewatch would be better? Either way, it was inoffensive but I don't understand the hype
- DirectorDamon SantostefanoStarsSelena GomezDrew SeeleyJane LynchMary lives with her evil stepmom/sisters and slaves for them. At the high school masquerade ball, she gets to dance with her pop idol, Joey. Running home before midnight, she drops her Zune. Joey tries to find the girl who fits the Zune.Definitely not as good as the first, but passable
- DirectorElizabeth Allen RosenbaumStarsEmma RobertsJoJoSara PaxtonTwo teenage girls discover a mermaid in their beach club's swimming pool.Watched in theaters
The cast was decent in this but the movie itself was pretty average from what I remember - DirectorDouglas BarrStarsKaley CuocoMelissa HalstromMichael PhenicieAs part of a film project, a physically fit teenager dons a fat suit to gain experience of the hardships facing overweight high school students. There are a ton of other teen movies I watched on LMN (the Lifetime Movie Network) because I spent an entire day watching them at my grandparents' house once. This is the only one I remember; Cuoco did a decent job from what I remember
- DirectorJohn HughesStarsMolly RingwaldAnthony Michael HallJustin HenryA girl's "sweet" sixteenth birthday is anything but special: her family forgets about it, and she suffers from every embarrassment possible. This did NOT live up to its reputation as one of the quintessential '80s teen movies (i.e. directed by John Hughes). The casual date rape, the hideous portrayal of Dong... it was really not a pleasure to watch in any sense.
