- DirectorMakoto ShinkaiStarsRyunosuke KamikiMone KamishiraishiRyo NaritaTwo teenagers share a profound, magical connection upon discovering they are swapping bodies. Things manage to become even more complicated when the boy and girl decide to meet in person. With animation that is breathtakingly beautiful and a story that comes together much better than I was expecting, I can easily say that "Your Name" will be remembered as one of those animated films that captures a true sense of romance, much like "Anomalisa."
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsSally HawkinsOctavia SpencerMichael ShannonAt a top secret research facility in the 1960s, a lonely janitor forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held in captivity."The Shape of Water" is the true Beauty and Beast movie that 2017 should be remembered for.
- DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety."Logan" is the Wolverine movie that we've wanted to see happen, and it delivers on almost every aspect. The best film in the "X-Men" franchise.
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years."Blade Runner 2049" is a sci-fi film noir epic that feels like absolute history in the making. Everything about it feels like it was purely made to a world to experience. The performances are stellar; the questions it gives you are all deep and have you pondering how this world functions; the score is triumphant; and the cinematography is absolutely jaw-dropping beyond words. This isn't just a film you need to watch, you need to EXPERIENCE it.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammAfter being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.I would dare say "Baby Driver" is Edgar Wright's best film. You can keep "Scott Pilgrim," and you can keep "The Cornetto Trilogy," because "Baby Driver" tops it all.
- DirectorDave McCaryStarsKyle MooneyJorge Lendeborg Jr.Matt WalshAfter being freed from his life in an underground bunker, a man sets out to make a movie of the only TV show he has ever known. Was a nice homage to the growing film makers of today. Adds a lot of mixes of "Elf," "American Movie," "Sesame Street," "Be Kind, Rewind," and "Star Trek" in one nice homage.
- DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.James Franco's work as director and lead are strongly put to the test, bringing Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber's script to life, recalling the story of such a notorious movie and how it became the next coming of Rocky Horror. His performance as Tommy Wiseau is absolutely uncanny, and I actually forgot it was James Franco. Dave Franco also is marvelous as Greg Sestro, it really captures that feeling of wanting to be famous so badly, even if it feels like a horrible decision.
This is the "Ed Wood" of the new generation, and I loved every *beep* minute of it. - DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsFrances McDormandWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit."Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" is another really dark comedy that you never thought you needed to watch until it starts. If you have seen Martin McDonagh's previous works, you know exactly what I mean.
Also, Fraces McDormand and Sam Rockwell: both fantastic! - DirectorNacho VigalondoStarsAnne HathawayJason SudeikisAustin StowellGloria is an out-of-work party girl forced to leave her life in New York City and move back home. When reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, she gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this phenomenon."Colossal" is a film that really took me off guard with its story and performances. Anne Hathaway is spectacular, but Jason Sudeikis stole the show completely.
- DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsJohn BoyegaAnthony MackieAlgee SmithFact-based drama set during the 1967 Detroit riots in which a group of rogue police officers respond to a complaint with retribution rather than justice on their minds."Detroit" is one of the most emotionally exhausting films I've ever sat through. It is brutal, it's uncomfortable, it's gritty, and rough on every level.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsFionn WhiteheadBarry KeoghanMark RylanceAllied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II."Dunkirk" is a very powerful war film, with fantastic cinematography and a brilliant score by Hans Zimmer. Not the best from Nolan, but certainly one that's worth revisiting.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattZoe SaldanaDave BautistaThe Guardians struggle to keep together as a team while dealing with their personal family issues, notably Star-Lord's encounter with his father, the ambitious celestial being Ego.It stands on par with the first film, and manages to keep itself lively and full of excitement, along with one of the MCU's top 3 best villains...although, the latter isn't that heavy in competition.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsAndy SerkisWoody HarrelsonSteve ZahnAfter the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind.Another strong entry in the "Planet of the Apes" reboot series, especially for Andy Serkis's performance as Caesar.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsChanning TatumAdam DriverDaniel CraigTwo brothers attempt to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina."Logan Lucky" is pure, all American entertainment, and it is worth it.
- DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California. As someone who came from a Catholic family, I can tell you that I've seen my siblings and I go through stuff like this. One of the most relatable movies I've seen this year.
- DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.Andy Muschietti managed to surprise me with how good of a director he can be, creating not only one of the best horror remakes, but easily among the best Stephen King adaptations.
- DirectorAngela RobinsonStarsLuke EvansRebecca HallBella HeathcoteThe story of psychologist William Moulton Marston, and his polyamorous relationship with his wife and their mistress who would inspire his creation of the superheroine, Wonder Woman. As good as the new "Wonder Woman" movie is, "Professor Marston and the Wonder Women" is a film that I think is just as important to see, to know exactly where it all started.
- DirectorMarc WebbStarsChris EvansMckenna GraceLindsay DuncanFrank, a single man raising his child prodigy niece Mary, is drawn into a custody battle with his mother.Genuine human connection is shown exceptionally well here in this movie.
- DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineRobin WrightWhen a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny. It's just nice to know that we have a good "Wonder Woman" movie, and a female lead superhero film too.
- DirectorRupert SandersStarsScarlett JohanssonPilou AsbækTakeshi KitanoIn the near future, Major Mira Killian is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. Was surprisingly impressed by Rupert Sanders live action adaptation of "Ghost in the Shell," and how it honors the source material better than I was expecting. And the casting of Scarlett Johansson didn't bother me because of how they explained it in the film.
- DirectorAaron SorkinStarsJessica ChastainIdris ElbaKevin CostnerThe true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target.Jessica Chastain takes another step at becoming the next Meryl Streep, taking on another role that is mostly likely going to garner her Oscar recognition, but with good reason. Plus, Aaron Sorkin's debut as a director might be average, but his writing still continues to shine.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsJennifer LawrenceJavier BardemEd HarrisA couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.Darren Aronofsky crafted one seriously *beep* up experience...I don't even know what to say here.
- DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthTom HiddlestonCate BlanchettImprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela."Thor: Ragnarok" is not only the best of the "Thor Trilogy," but it's the best third installment that not many comic book franchises get.
- DirectorJulia DucournauStarsGarance MarillierElla RumpfRabah Nait OufellaA young woman, studying to be a vet, develops a craving for human flesh.A scenario of a vegan veterinarian turned cannibal, both ironic and darkly horrifying.
- DirectorJonathan DaytonValerie FarisStarsEmma StoneSteve CarellAndrea RiseboroughThe true story of the 1973 tennis match between World number one Billie Jean King and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs.Emma Stone and Steve Carrell really do give masterful performances, in a sports biopic that really pulls you into this story as if it was happening for the first time.
