Mr. Robot continues to exert a powerful hold on Elliot.
Season 1 Spoiler Alert: Elliot realized that the enigmatic Mr. Robot was actually a hallucination of his father at the end of Season 1. However, he still cannot rid himself of the figment of his imagination. Christian Slater, who plays Mr. Robot, acknowledged that he was concerned that his character would no longer have a function. He explains, "Now that the cat is out of the bag, what is the purpose of this? Why was [he] there ... and where is it going to go?" After a conversation with showrunner Sam Esmail, he was reassured. "[Mr. Robot is] there to challenge Elliot and to do things that he might not normally be able to do. And [he's] also there to protect him. He revealed that Esmail had a lengthy conversation with each cast member about their Season 2 character arcs. He said, "I was thrilled. It goes to some very unexpected places."
