6 Times TV Shows Predicted the Future5 of 6
Ashley Madison Website Is Hacked
Show: "Mr. Robot"
Episode: "eps1.9_zer0-day.avi"
Air date: Sept. 2, 2015
Season 1 of "Mr. Robot" was arguably the most predictive TV show in recent years. The Season 1 finale's air date was postponed a week because a plot point closely mirrored a televised violent incident that took place on the day it was originally scheduled to air. On a lighter note, in that same episode, the character of Lenny laments that his Ashley Madison account has been doxxed. The website that advertised itself as a dating site for married people who wanted to have affairs had, in fact, been recently hacked. Many fans assumed that the line was added in post-production to reference the event. In an interview, showrunner Sam Esmail set the record straight. "That was originally in the script. [...] When I wrote that in the season finale, I went, ‘Well, I’m kind of overdoing this,’ referencing Ashley Madison. I wound up cutting it before we were shooting it." He put it back when the real hack happened. "It’s almost as if the world wanted me to keep the [Ashley Madison] scene as intended."
