- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsFederico LuppiRon PerlmanClaudio BrookA mysterious device designed to provide its owner with eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. The first film in my own collection, funny story about this purchase is that I was browsing in the now defunct movie stop when this gem came in used as I was about to leave, in perfect condition with a clean disc, undamaged case and booklet and none of the feared bronzing from earlier discs. Being a Guillermo del Toro fan I new I had to buy it that very day.
- DirectorKar-Wai WongStarsBrigitte LinTakeshi KaneshiroTony Leung Chiu-waiTwo melancholic Hong Kong policemen fall in love: one with a mysterious female underworld figure, the other with a beautiful and ethereal waitress at a late-night restaurant he frequents.Criterion's first Blu-ray release. I heard a lot of good things about this movie, especially from Quentin Tarantino, and I found the criterion edition at my local FYE and wanted it but decided I should wait a little longer until I had more money in my wallet, this was of course before I found out it was out of print and when I checked and saw online how rare and pricey it was, I was immediately regretting my decision and rushed back the following Saturday to pick up the only copy they had. For 20 dollars I struck gold. It is now one of my favorite movies.
- DirectorKrzysztof KieslowskiStarsJuliette BinocheZbigniew ZamachowskiJulie DelpyA woman struggles to find a way to live her life after the death of her husband and child.Another FYE purchase. I saw this collection in perfect condition for a reasonable price at 50 dollars, I new during the criterion sale that it would be half off but it would have literally been the same price as they were selling it for at the moment so I couldn't resist. It was kind of a blind buy as I hadn't really heard much of these movies prior but I binge watched them a few days later and fell in love with them.
- DirectorKrzysztof KieslowskiStarsZbigniew ZamachowskiJulie DelpyJanusz GajosAfter his wife divorces him, a Polish immigrant plots to get even with her.See my above description.
- DirectorKrzysztof KieslowskiStarsIrène JacobJean-Louis TrintignantFrédérique FederA model discovers a retired judge is keen on invading people's privacy.See my above description.
- DirectorMark RobsonStarsBarbara ParkinsPatty DukePaul BurkeFilm version of Jacqueline Susann's best-selling novel chronicling the rise and fall of three young women in show business.I had so much fun with this outrageous camp trash classic when I first discovered it. I was heartbroken when I initially saw that no Blu-ray release existed yet. So I couldn't describe my excitement when a Blu-ray release was announced for September along with its notorious non-sequel. These two were my first purchases of the sale on November.
- DirectorRuss MeyerStarsDolly ReadCynthia MyersMarcia McBroomThree girls come to Hollywood to make it big, but find only sex, drugs, and sleaze.Words cannot describe the zaniness of this psychedelic fever dream sexploitation musical (that description itself is ridiculous), it truly is something you have to see to believe. It was unacceptable that a cult classic of this caliber had not seen a Blu-ray release initially. I was aware of the upcoming Arrow video Blu-ray release and it would have been a day one purchase if it wasn't region locked. So I made sure that it was my first purchase along with the aforementioned film for the Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble after I jumped for joy when their Blu-ray was announced.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEllar ColtranePatricia ArquetteEthan HawkeThe life of Mason, from early childhood to his arrival at college.I knew that Criterion Collection was going to release their own special edition at some point in the future but I loved this film too much to wait so I still bought the standard paramount pictures Blu-ray to enjoy. I did not mind double dipping one bit when I purchased the new release at the Barnes and Noble sale.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsIvana BaqueroAriadna GilSergi LópezIn the Falangist Spain of 1944, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.I initially had the DVD and wore it out so when I saw the brand new Blu-ray at movie stop I purchased it in the blink of an eye. Due to my sheer devotion to the film and Guillermo del Toro I happily double dipped for the Criterion edition at the Barnes and Noble sale.
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsMia FarrowJohn CassavetesRuth GordonA young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors. My cherished DVD was sitting around in my old collection so I new it was time to upgrade. Initially I had some difficulty finding the criterion edition so I almost gave in and paid full price online for it until I found it at the Barnes and Noble sale in store and immediately bought it along with Boyhood and Pan's Labyrinth that day.
- DirectorJames IvoryStarsAnthony HopkinsEmma ThompsonVanessa RedgraveSet in the early 20th century, class distinctions and troubled relations affect the relationship between two families and the ownership of a cherished British estate known as Howards End.As the criterion blu-ray of this film had unfortunately gone out of print, the collector in me wanted to try and obtain this one, especially because it's one of my all time favorite period pieces.
- DirectorKar-Wai WongStarsTony Leung Chiu-waiMaggie CheungSiu Ping-LamTwo neighbors form a strong bond after both suspect extramarital activities of their spouses. However, they agree to keep their bond platonic so as not to commit similar wrongs.I was always a fan of Wong Kar-Wai and his films so getting the Criterion blu-ray was a no brainer, and although it's not my favorite movie of his, it's still absolutely magnificent.
- DirectorKon IchikawaStarsYoshiko SakumaSayuri YoshinagaYûko KotegawaThe orphaned Makioka sisters look for a husband for their third sister, Yukiko, as the rebellious youngest sister, Taeko, is kept waiting her turn.Kon Ichikawa's smooth and beautiful adaptation of the novel is such a joy to watch, with its great costumes and lovely cinematography. Shame the blu-ray has no special features.
