I'll See You in My Dreams
Carol (Blythe Danner) is a widow in her 70s who leads a very pleasant life, spending most of her days with her gardening, drinking glasses of Chardonnay, with her golden retriever always by her side. But when her dog gets sick, she realizes she's a bit lonely and after a bit of persuasion from her friends, she decides to start dating again. She ends up developing two very different relationships. First with her pool boy, played by Martin Starr, and the other with Sam Elliott, a handsome gentleman who lives at the same retirement home as her friends. From this description, you might think the film was a serious drama. But this poignant romantic dramedy was also surprisingly funny, mostly thanks to the supporting cast including Rhea Pearlman, June Squibb, and Mary Kay Place. It's a simple film about love, life, and death, but I really enjoyed it.
