Sundance 2015: Films We Have Seen5 of 10
Unexpected
Cobie Smulders stars Sam, as an inner-city high school teacher on the south side of Chicago who discovers she's pregnant. Her school is closing permanently at the end of semester, and her boyfriend (Anders Holm) proposes and agrees to support the family so it seems like it would be an ideal situation, but she isn't quite comfortable with the idea of being a stay-at-home mom. When Sam learns that Jasmine (Gail Beane), one of her star students with the most potential to go to college, is pregnant, she becomes determined to find a school that Jasmine can attend so she won't have to give up her dream. Loosely based on Swanberg's own personal experience, the film is sweet without being too sentimental but did feel a heavy-handed at times.
