Sundance 2015: Films We Have Seen1 of 10
The Bronze -
I saw this film first thing on Friday morning in a packed Eccles theater, the night after its original premiere. I didn't know much about the film other than that Melissa Rauch of "The Big Bang Theory" plays a former Olympic gymnast so I was in no way prepared for this foul-mouthed character that would make Billy Bob Thornton's Bad Santa blush. Directed by Bryan Buckley, and co-written by Melissa and her husband Winston Rauch, 'The Bronze' follows Hope Ann Greggory, a decade after her Olympic fame has worn off but she's still milking her local celebrity status. When a new young athlete's star rises in town, Hope has to take action to keep her "hometown hero" title.
At first I worried her raunchy character might get old fast, but the film never wavered and I went along for the ride. The film was hilarious and it has one of the best sex scenes I have ever seen. That alone is reason to see the film. 'The Bronze' was picked up by Relativity and I have my fingers crossed the film will do well because I want to see if Melissa's original rap song that plays over the credits will get a Best Song nominee at next year's Oscars.
