- DirectorRob LettermanStarsJack BlackDylan MinnetteOdeya RushA teenager teams up with the daughter of young-adult horror author R.L. Stine after the writer's imaginary demons are set free on the town of Madison, Delaware.THE BUZZ: Rob Letterman got let out of director jail 5 years after Gulliver's Travels, a movie that nearly derailed Jack Black's career as well (Bernie saved him, though). The duo have reunited for a live-action attempt at turning R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series of books into a movie franchise for a studio that desperately needs one. The mixed reviews don't mean much since it's all about whether kids will care about the book-to-movie translation.
- DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsMia WasikowskaJessica ChastainTom HiddlestonIn the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds - and remembers.THE BUZZ: In terms of Guillermo del Toro's projects, there seems to be a bit more discussion about Pacific Rim 2's delay (as in: will the movie actually get made?) than there is about this haunted house story right in front of us. To us, Crimson Peak seems to be from the same part of del Toro's brain that created Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone, and we're way more interested in this kind of storytelling. We love the cast he's assembled, and are most curious about Mia Wasikowska's performance since she can either flourish in mystery/thriller mode (Jane Eyre) or flounder (Stoker).
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom HanksMark RylanceAlan AldaDuring the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.THE BUZZ: Recently Steven Spielberg has had a fair amount to say about comic book movies and the overall state of cinema -- he hasn't knocked The Avengers, Batman, et al., he just thinks their box office reign won't last much longer. More than anything, he has said that the success of certain genre is cyclical. So let's hope his reunion with Tom Hanks, which finds the director in star in deep cover during the Cold War, is more than a sturdy espionage tale -- and that it successfully finds the older movie-going audience for which it has been designed.
- DirectorJames VanderbiltStarsCate BlanchettRobert RedfordDennis QuaidNewsroom drama detailing the 2004 CBS "60 Minutes" report investigating then-President George W. Bush's military service, and the subsequent firestorm of criticism that cost anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes their careers.THE BUZZ: Critics don't agree on James Vanderbilt's handling of the material (the Oscar-nominated screenwriter makes his directorial debut here) but there's universal love for Cate Blanchett's performance as Mary Mapes, Dan Rather's producer. Apparently the third act focuses in on Mapes as she comes apart at the professional and psychological seams. Awards-wise, her biggest competition could be herself, since Carol is getting an Oscar-qualifying release in November.
- DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside.THE BUZZ: Brie Larson is having an Elizabeth Olsen moment as the actress, who has already made waves in the indie-movie world (Short Term 12, most notably) finds herself in demand for both major-studio pictures and specialty/art-house fare. Like Olsen, she's even signed up for a questionable monster movie (Kong: Skull Island). Room is being positioned as worthy of a Best Actress Oscar nomination, which would find Larson up against frontrunner Cate Blanchett; interestingly, both actresses faced off for the Indie Spirit Award two years ago.
- DirectorColin HanksStarsRuss SolomonMichael SolomonHeidi Cotler'All Things Must Pass' is a documentary that explores the rise and fall of Tower Records, and its legacy forged by its rebellious founder, Russ Solomon.THE BUZZ: Looking over the fact that you can't seem to have a music documentary these days free of Dave Grohl's talking head, the real star here is Russ Solomon, the man who got his start in business by selling records out of his father's drug store, and went on to establish and run Tower Records through all the different highs of the 1960s and 70s, into the no-less-decadent 80s and early 90s, and then smack into the age of Napster and file sharing. The Internet will be labelled the enemy here, and someone will wonder aloud if Tower could exist today since digital music is huge, record pressing plants cannot keep up with the demand for vinyl LPs, and people still actually buy CDs.
- DirectorAvi LewisStarsNaomi KleinStacey Arwen RaabA look at seven communities around the world with the proposition that we can seize the crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.THE BUZZ: Social activist Naomi Klein worked on her most recent book, This Changes Everything: Capitalism Vs. the Climate, while her husband, Avi Lewis, was filming this documentary; their collaboration included the creation and publication of The Leap Manifesto, a new way of looking at the economy and climate change in Canada. The documentary already opened well in New York; now it rolls out to the rest of the country.
- DirectorAndrew ErwinJon ErwinStarsCaleb CastilleSean AstinJon VoightA gifted high-school football player must learn to embrace his talent and his faith as he battles racial tensions on and off the field.THE BUZZ: Jon & Andrew Erwin have been wielding film cameras since they were teenagers and they worked their way through TV event production and the world of music videos before segueing into movies. They broke through with October Baby and followed up with Mom's Night Out, so the Faith-based audience knows who the brothers are. The same audience should also be familiar with the story of Tony Nathan, the former pro football player whose life, at least as far as the movie is concerned, begins in 1973 when a move to desegregate schools in Birmingham, Alabama found him sent to Woodlawn High School, where his faith was instrumental in reversing the team's fortunes.
- DirectorStephen S. CampanelliStarsOlga KurylenkoJames PurefoyMorgan FreemanFour criminals steal diamonds from a safety deposit box in Cape Town, including a drive containing a US senator's evil plans. He'll do anything to get it back from Alexis.THE BUZZ: Apparently the character Alex Farraday looks to introduce herself here as a franchise character, but Momentum's only distinguishing feature seems to be the presence of Olga Kurylenko. We're surprised this wasn't made as a TV show instead.
