- DirectorRidley ScottStarsMatt DamonJessica ChastainKristen WiigAn astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue. We will always wonder what Drew Goddard's take on Andy Weir's e-book turned best seller would have looked and felt like, though we're also more than happy to follow Ridley Scott back into space on a course that doesn't intersect with the Alien universe in any way. (Though wouldn't it be hilarious if Engineers showed up at the end?) Matt Damon's charm and wit has aged well, so we trust he'll adroitly handle things on the set that serves as Mars; his crew looks more than capable to plot a successful mutiny against NASA, though we hope Kristen Wiig has more to do than hold her hands to her face and look worried.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittCharlotte Le BonBen KingsleyIn 1974, high-wire artist Philippe Petit recruits a team of people to help him realize his dream: to walk the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. This release week is interesting because it features two movies that are based on Oscar winning documentaries: James Marsh blended recreations and factual accounts of Philippe Petit's high-wire walk to great effect in Man on Wire, and now Robert Zemeckis brings a photorealistic touch to the story, which also finds Joseph Gordon-Levitt trying out a French accent. In terms of direct competition, it seems like The Walk's challenge will be to get people to stop talking about Everest's myriad achievements and to start paying more attention to this movie. And of course there's that movie about Matt Damon on Mars to contend with.
- DirectorPeter SollettStarsJulianne MooreElliot PageSteve CarellNew Jersey police lieutenant Laurel Hester and her registered domestic partner Stacie Andree battle to secure Hester's pension benefits when she is diagnosed with terminal cancer.A movie based on an Oscar winning documentary short is going find itself positioned for awards contention, and when Julianne Moore is in front of the camera, she can turn average material and direction into something approximating magic (see: [link=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3316960/[/link]Still Alice[/link]). We're sure that Moore and Ellen Page will combine their talent and do right by Laurel Hester and her widow, Stacie Andree; we the reviews were as enthusiastic about the rest of the movie.
- DirectorDavis GuggenheimStarsMalala YousafzaiZiauddin YousafzaiToor Pekai YousafzaiA look at the events leading up to the Taliban's attack on Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai for speaking out on girls' education, followed by the aftermath, including her speech to the United Nations. The consensus review of Davis Guggenheim's documentary on Malala Yousafzai indicates that Guggenheim doesn't get in the way of Malala's story, but he also doesn't frame it in a way that brings any new depth or dimension to what we already know about her life thus far.
- DirectorMikael HåfströmStarsJohn CusackGong LiChow Yun-FatA '40s period piece which revolves around an American expat who returns to Shanghai in the months before Pearl Harbor due to the death of his friend. After so many years on the shelf, we won't believe this movie will be released until this Friday ... Harvey Weinstein's epic production was booted from China before it had a chance to begin filming in 2008 (!); the Chinese government, still up in arms over Ang Lee's Lust, Caution, retracted Shanghai's permits mere months before cameras were set to roll. Weinstein shrugged it off -- an easy feat considering the nearly $300 million he had received to produce Asia-set films -- and touched down in Thailand (and England) a year later to make the movie. But that doesn't explain the subsequent 5-year wait, although it is standard behavior from this particular studio.
- DirectorAriel KleimanStarsVincent CasselJeremy ChabrielFlorence MezzaraAlexander, a boy who has been raised in a sequestered commune, finds that his increasing unwillingness to fall in line puts him on a collision course with Gregori, the society's charismatic and domineering leader.Ariel Kleiman and his writing partner Sarah Cyngler turned a newspaper article about Colombia's child assassin trade into Kleiman's first feature, and the strength of their short film Young Love helped get the financing in place for what looks to be another powerful Australian story about the corruptive influences of patriarchy.
