- DirectorGuy RitchieStarsMatthew McConaugheyCharlie HunnamMichelle DockeryAn American expat tries to sell off his highly profitable marijuana empire in London, triggering plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.Easily the best movie of 2020, The Gentleman has a perfect mix of action, drama, and comedy. The acting (especially from Collin Ferrell and Matthew McConaughey) is spot on, the characters are interesting and likable, the story is fantastic, and the humor is well done. The Gentleman is a must watch.
10/10 - DirectorChristopher NolanStarsJohn David WashingtonRobert PattinsonElizabeth DebickiArmed with only the word "Tenet," and fighting for the survival of the entire world, CIA operative, The Protagonist, journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a global mission that unfolds beyond real time.Despite having a confusing story (a theme in pretty all of Christopher Nolan's movies), Tenet is a movie that truly exceeded my expectations. It features solid lead performances by John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, amazing action scenes (probably my favorite from any Christopher Nolan movie), and a very interesting and engaging story that make Tenet a movie that truly earns its two and a half hour runtime.
10/10 - DirectorAdil El ArbiBilall FallahStarsWill SmithMartin LawrenceVanessa HudgensMiami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett must face off against a mother-and-son pair of drug lords who wreak vengeful havoc on their city.Despite not being directed by Michael Bay (a true shame), Bad Boys for Life still has the same charm as the first two movies, and still feels like it belongs in the series. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence still have great chemistry, the humor is still hilarious, there are some great action scenes, and the movie has a very surprising plot twist towards the end. If you enjoyed the first two Bad Boys movies, you'll enjoy this one.
10/10 - DirectorLeigh WhannellStarsElisabeth MossOliver Jackson-CohenHarriet DyerWhen Cecilia's abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.Easily the best horror movie of 2020, The Invisible Man is a movie that grows on me every time I rewatch it. The movie is scary without relying on jumpscares, features great performances, and an excellent story that is a great modern take on a nearly 90 year old story, even if the invisibility suit the bad guy uses wouldn't actually be able to work as shown in the movie.
9/10 - DirectorYeon Sang-hoStarsNazeeh TarshaGang Dong-wonLee Jung-hyunA zombie virus has in the last four years spread to all South Korea. Four Koreans in Hong Kong sail through the blockade to Incheon for USD20,000,000 on a truck. While not as good as its predecessor, Peninsula is another in a long line of excellent Korean horror movies I've seen. It's much more action packed than the first one, it's never boring, and the story is actually pretty neat. The third act especially makes this movie worth watching.
8/10 - DirectorEshom NelmsIan NelmsStarsMel GibsonWalton GogginsMarianne Jean-BaptisteA rowdy, unorthodox Santa Claus is fighting to save his declining business. Meanwhile, Billy, a neglected and precocious 12 year old, hires a hit man to kill Santa after receiving a lump of coal in his stocking.A very unique take on Santa Claus, Fatman is a very bizarre, entertaining, and fun movie made great by the performances of Mel Gibson as Santa and Walton Goggins as a hitman hired to kill him.
8/10 - DirectorDavid AyerStarsBobby SotoCinthya CarmonaShia LaBeoufA "tax collector" working for a local crime lord finds his family's safety compromised when the rival of his boss shows up in L.A. and upends the business. One of the most underrated movies I've seen in a while, The Tax Collector is a compelling, well acted movie with great action, an emotionally driven story, and great characters. My only complaint is that there isn't enough Shia Labeouf.
8/10 - DirectorChris SandersStarsHarrison FordOmar SyCara GeeA sled dog struggles for survival in the wilds of the Yukon.A surprisingly good PG movie, Call of the Wild is an excellent movie featuring a great performance by Harrison Ford, an entertaining story, and some genuinely sweet moments, despite the fact that the CGI looks pretty spotty.
8/10 - DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsIssa RaeKumail NanjianiPaul SparksA couple (Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. The Lovebirds is a movie that was much better than I was expecting. The story is pretty original, the two leads have excellent chemistry, and there are many hilarious moments throughout the movie that will definitely keep you entertained.
8/10 - DirectorVeena SudStarsPeter SarsgaardMireille EnosJoey KingA father and daughter are on their way to dance camp when they spot the girl's best friend on the side of the road. When they stop to offer the friend a ride, their good intentions soon result in terrible consequences.A truly underrated gem, The Lie is an excellent movie with great acting, a good story, and some interesting twists and turns here and there. However, there is a pretty stupid plot twist at the end that makes most of the movie pointless.
7/10 - DirectorDavid PriorStarsJames Badge DaleMarin IrelandSasha FrolovaOn the trail of a missing girl, an ex-cop comes across a secretive group attempting to summon a terrifying supernatural entity. The Empty Man has a lot of the ingredients to be a horror masterpiece: an original concept, a dark and scary atmosphere, great performances, and a likable lead. However, it's held back from achieving its full potential by an overlong runtime, slow pace, and underwhelming conclusion.
7/10 - DirectorIl ChoJo Il HyungMadeleine MartinStarsYoo Ah-inPark Shin-hyeJeon Bae-sooThe rapid spread of an unknown infection has left an entire city in ungovernable chaos, but one survivor remains alive in isolation. It is his story.Another excellent Korean film, #Alive is an excellent zombie with great performances, action, and scares, and makes the most of its confined setting.
7/10 - DirectorJacob ChaseStarsAzhy RobertsonGillian JacobsJohn Gallagher Jr.A monster named Larry manifests itself through smart phones and mobile devices. Feature film version of the 2017 short film.Despite its fairly cliched premise, Come Play is a well made, spooky movie that, for once in a horror movie, features an accurate portrayal of autism.
7/10 - DirectorDave WilsonStarsVin DieselEiza GonzálezSam HeughanRay Garrison, a slain soldier, is re-animated with superpowers.Definitely one of the most underrated movies of the year, Bloodshot is an exciting, action packed adventure with a fantastic lead performance by Vin Diesel.
7/10 - DirectorMax WinklerStarsCharlie HunnamJack O'ConnellNaheem GarciaTwo brothers try to escape their circumstances by travelling across the country for a no holds barred boxing match that becomes a fight for their lives. What Jungleland lacks in story and originality, it makes up for with its great acting, good characters, and excellent character interactions. It can also serve as a good lesson for any pair of brothers.
7/10 - DirectorTyler SpindelStarsDavid SpadeLauren LapkusNick SwardsonTim thinks he's invited the woman of his dreams on a work retreat to Hawaii, realizing too late he mistakenly texted someone from a nightmare blind date.Another fine edition to David Spade's filmography, The Wrong Missy is a hilarious movie with an interesting concept, great performances, and a very funny Rob Schneider cameo.
7/10 - DirectorBrett PierceDrew T. PierceStarsJohn-Paul HowardPiper CurdaJamison JonesA defiant teenage boy, struggling with his parents' imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand year-old witch, who is living beneath the skin of and posing as the woman next door. The Wretched, despite a few horror cliches here and there, is a very dark, entertaining horror movie with plenty of scares and an interesting premise.
7/10 - DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineKristen WiigDiana must contend with a colleague, and with a businessman whose desire for extreme wealth sends the world down a path of destruction, after an ancient artifact that grants wishes goes missing.Easily one of the most disappointing movies I've seen in a long time, Wonder Woman 1984, while not without its moments, and certainly helped by Chris Pine and Pedro Pascal's entertaining performances, is an extremely ridiculous, over the top, and bloated movie that stands in the shadow of its predecessor.
6/10 - DirectorCraig ZobelStarsBetty GilpinHilary SwankIke BarinholtzTwelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don't know where they are, or how they got there. They don't know they've been chosen - for a very specific purpose - The Hunt. After a promising start, The Hunt blows its load (and kills off Ike Barinholtz) too early, leading to a very boring second half.
6/10 - DirectorGina Prince-BythewoodStarsCharlize TheronKiKi LayneMatthias SchoenaertsA covert team of immortal mercenaries is suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered. While it has an interesting concept involving immortals, The Old Guard is little more than a generic, cliched action movie that adds nothing new to the genre.
6/10 - DirectorDavid KoeppStarsKevin BaconAmanda SeyfriedAvery Tiiu EssexA former banker, his actress wife, and their spirited daughter book a vacation at an isolated modern home in the Welsh countryside where nothing is quite as it seems. You Should Have Left is one of many horror movies with a lot of potential ruined by a terrible ending.
5/10 - DirectorNat FaxonJim RashStarsJulia Louis-DreyfusWill FerrellZach WoodsBarely escaping an avalanche during a family ski vacation in the Alps, a married couple is thrown into disarray as they are forced to reevaluate their lives and how they feel about each other.Aside from Kristofer Hivju's cameo, Downhill is a dull, boring movie that forgets to be entertaining.
5/10 - DirectorNatalie Erika JamesStarsRobyn NevinEmily MortimerBella HeathcoteA daughter, mother and grandmother are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family's home.Relic is one of many horror movies with a lot of potential ruined by a terrible ending.
5/10 - DirectorBryan BertinoStarsMarin IrelandMichael Abbott Jr.Julie Oliver-TouchstoneOn a secluded farm in a nondescript rural town, a man is slowly dying. His family gathers to mourn, and soon a darkness grows, marked by waking nightmares and a growing sense that something evil is taking over the family. This movie can suck my white ass. Enough said.
