- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsMatthew McConaugheyAnne HathawayJessica ChastainWhen Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.I had something well thought out written but IMDB couldn't handle my description. Anyways 4th dimension, Matthew McCountryhey, Accurate science depictions, Father daughter struggles, apocalyptical circumstances, and a lil bit of Hans Zimmer? can't go wrong, only right here.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsRyan O'NealMarisa BerensonPatrick MageeAn Irish rogue wins the heart of a rich widow and assumes her dead husband's aristocratic position in 18th-century England.Phenomenal
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential. The Mentor Mentee Struggle here. I don't remember anyone other than Miles Teller and JK Simmons in this film. And that has to do with how encapsulating the last scene is. The hate, the undying effort and finally the in the moment recognition. Some of the best acting I've ever seen. I'm watching this again soon.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsBrad PittDiane KrugerEli RothIn Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner's vengeful plans for the same.My personal favorite amongst Tarantino's collection. Christoph Waltz's Col. Hans Landa might be tied for my favourite villain with the Joker. I ought to reevalute this. It's harder to create a remarkable villain than hero. Also country accent brad pitt heck yeah.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsRussell CroweJoaquin PhoenixConnie NielsenA former Roman General sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery.Represents one of my favorite periods (basic yup), a classic hero's struggle and a bittersweet (not what I was hoping for) ending you didn't typically get at the time. I could watch this over and over again. One of my favourite Heros. proving a great man is a great man no matter what status and materials are stripped from him. His greatness can not be vanquished even in death.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.Heath Ledger's the joker may be my favorite villain of all time. The apathetic violence he imposes on Gotham throughout the film is daunting. He seems to have no rational or ulterior motive. He does because he can and amps up his game because he enjoys his chess match with batman. It has a sociopathic vision for how to wreak chaos in already broken system.
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioMatt DamonJack NicholsonAn undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.Absolute ride of a movie. This is the film that helped me distinguish Mark Wahlberg from Matt Damon growing up. Great diversions, a lot of story being told, and a great ending is a cherry on top. Ought to rewatch this.
- DirectorEdward ZwickStarsTom CruiseKen WatanabeBilly ConnollyIn 19th century Japan, Nathan Algren, a US army captain, is hired by the Japanese emperor to train his army in the modern warfare techniques. Captain Algren finds himself trapped in a struggle between two eras and two worlds. My favorite film growing up so I have a huge amount of Nostalgia bias here. But really it tells the story of a changing times, swords vs. guns, in a place where (arguably) the best trained swords man lived. That with the reflection of western influence on eastern culture is cool enough. But you also get to see the intricacies and beauty of a strong fading culture clashing with unwanted change. I could go on & on about this one really. One of my favourite heroes.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleMichael CaineKen WatanabeAfter witnessing his parents' death, Bruce learns the art of fighting to confront injustice. When he returns to Gotham as Batman, he must stop a secret society that intends to destroy the city. This did set the franchise up for success and a lot of characters for the series are developed well here. Personally though my least favorite of the 3 but still a great movie.
- DirectorMel GibsonStarsMel GibsonSophie MarceauPatrick McGoohanScottish warrior William Wallace leads his countrymen in a rebellion to free his homeland from the tyranny of King Edward I of England.Fawk yeah Scottish independence. Maybe one of my favorite film hero's of all time. A man who's path was forged into a hero not by his choice but by the wrongdoings of others. FREEEEEDOMMMM.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.I don't have much to say about this. It's ranking speaks for it and doesn't waste a moment in the story. They don't make movies of this style and caliber nowadays.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsSong Kang-hoLee Sun-kyunCho Yeo-jeongGreed and class discrimination threaten the newly-formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.Amazing film. Need to rewatch it again but the class struggle represented here is strong. Reminiscent of the patron model the Romans used here. Anyways those are my thoughts. Also before this I thought I had gotten rid of my fears of going into & leaving the basement. Boy was I wrong.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.Absolute classic and a wild ride. It took me 3 times to finish this film. When I finally finished it though, I watched it 3 more times to completion. Tarantino captures the American era all through his spaghetti style film. It's unique, it's a rollercoaster, and if you can sit through it, it's worth it.
- DirectorBob PersichettiPeter RamseyRodney RothmanStarsShameik MooreJake JohnsonHailee SteinfeldTeen Miles Morales becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities. The first Animated film I included on this list... To have such a unique and original style in the age of superhero movie overkill is groundbreaking. I think this will continue to be a genre changing film as the years go on. The animation & soundtrack does it for me here.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.Honestly enjoy this more than the Matrix series and they fill a similar category for me. Complete different genres but that's a deeper dive. It captures the same grit, disgust, and dystopian feel that encapsulated it's time period. Reminds me of cigarette smoke in restaurants before that was banned.
- DirectorKinji FukasakuStarsTatsuya FujiwaraAki MaedaTarô YamamotoIn the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill one another under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act.Besides the plot being spectacular, it makes great use of having a variety of character archetypes. They're a bit telegraphed but still worth a rewatch. Overall the film itself is gritty, gory, and a bit of a thriller. Reminded me of lord of the Flies while being too original to say it took direct inspiration from it. Most definitely an early 2000s Thriller/Slasher/horror style film. Would rewatch at 1 am.
- DirectorMichel GondryStarsJim CarreyKate WinsletTom WilkinsonWhen their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever. Thanks for this one Jim. One of the few feel good movies I really enjoy. Maybe it's because of it's weird scifi like plot or because it's not really feel good but a struggle throughout. I actually have to rewatch this. know it's a personal favourite could go down to a good on a rewatch.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsTom HanksRobin WrightGary SiniseThe history of the United States from the 1950s to the '70s unfolds from the perspective of an Alabama man with an IQ of 75, who yearns to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart.Taught me a lot about the American era it represents. Classico.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJoseph Gordon-LevittElliot PageA thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.I was just happy I understood it the first time I watched it. Great but not as high on it as everyone else.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTom HanksMichael Clarke DuncanDavid MorseA tale set on death row, where gentle giant John Coffey possesses the mysterious power to heal people's ailments. When the lead guard, Paul Edgecombe, recognizes John's gift, he tries to help stave off the condemned man's execution.I love this film but I hate it at the same time. A tragic story that really takes you through it all. I think this was the first film I dropped a tear at. A great man in the wrong time, what a shame.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsGene HackmanGwyneth PaltrowAnjelica HustonThe eccentric members of a dysfunctional family reluctantly gather under the same roof for various reasons.I found this movie really dumb to a degree but that didn't take away from it's high quality. IIRC correctly my reaction was "Wow this plot feels pointless and these characters are legitimately stupid". This movie was not about the destination though but the ridiculously entertaining journey it took you on. Also the TV series "The umbrella academy" reminds me of this film.
- DirectorJohn SimpsonStarsKatheryn WinnickLaura BreckenridgeJessica LucasThree women are stalked by a killer with a grudge that extends back to the girls' childhoods.I watched this when I was in middle school and it's the epitome of trashy, thrashy, gory, horror films. Their are certain scenes that stood out to me though that are extremely unique to this film. I'd definitely need to revisit and watch as my Nostalgia Bias is heavy here. Light spoilers but the diorama scene concept is so evil & ingenious here.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHugh JackmanScarlett JohanssonAfter a tragic accident, two stage magicians in 1890s London engage in a battle to create the ultimate illusion while sacrificing everything they have to outwit each other. This is a helluva film, i've only watched it once and it kept me on my toes the whole time. I need to rewatch it to see where it sits. A great film. a great film.
- DirectorBryan SingerStarsKevin SpaceyGabriel ByrneChazz PalminteriThe sole survivor of a pier shoot-out tells the story of how a notorious criminal influenced the events that began with five criminals meeting in a seemingly random police lineup.
- DirectorHarry HookStarsBalthazar GettyChris FurrhDanuel PipolyStranded on an island, a group of schoolboys degenerate into savagery.Personally appreciated this growing up. Boy scouts robinson Crusue or something like that. Rewatched it recently and really liked it but it lacked the luster it had growing up as child. good film, not great.
