The Venice Film Festival will fete Australian director and screenwriter Peter Weir with its honorary Golden Lion at its forthcoming 80th edition.
Accepting the honor, Weir said: “The Venice Film Festival and its Golden Lion are part of the folklore of our craft. To be singled out as a recipient for a lifetime’s work as a director is a considerable honor.”
Born in August 1944, Weir was one of the pivotal figures in the Australian New Wave cinema of the 70s. He began his career in 1969 when he took a job with the government-funded Commonwealth Film Unit as a director. Weir struck out on his own in 1973 and directed his first feature film, the comic-horror The Cars That Ate Paris (1974), which he also wrote. He won an international audience with Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), followed by The Last Wave (1977), for which he also co-wrote the screenplay.

Australian director George Miller made his first feature film, "Mad Max," in 1979. It was a very low-budget affair costing about $200,000. The film takes place in the near future when the Earth is running low on oil and civilization is just beginning to crumble. "Mad" Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is a road cop tasked with reigning in the chaos. "Mad Max" was decidedly low-fi, but it struck a chord with audiences, ultimately earning almost $100 million worldwide. It remains one of the most profitable movies of all time, comparable only to "The Blair Witch Project," "Paranormal Activity," and "Deep Throat." Miller would go on to make several sequels to "Mad Max" in 1981, 1985, and 2015. The fifth film in the series, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," is hitting theaters this month, with a potential sixth entry, "Mad Max: The Wasteland," in the early planning stages.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga director George Miller recently confirmed that the upcoming prequel will feature a surprise appearance from Max Rockatansky. Except now, what could have been one of the movie's biggest talking points is no longer a surprise!
We first met the character in 1979's Mad Max where he was played by Mel Gibson. The actor went on to reprise the role in Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, with Tom Hardy taking over in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road.
During a recent screening, Miller announced that Jacob Tomuri (who we've included a photo of below) will play Max in Furiosa.
"It was Jacob Tomuri, who was Tom Hardy's double [in Fury Road]," Miller told attendees (via SFFGazette.com). "He also did some other stunts. He's a New Zealand stuntman, and he was doing some other stunts on the film, and I thought, 'Who better?'"

A few weeks ago, it looked like S Craig Zahler would be making the noir thriller The Big Stone Grid as his first movie since Dragged Across Concrete back in 2018. Now, it turns out that Zahler will indeed be making a new film, but it will be an all-new project that re-teams him with his frequent star Vince Vaughn. The movie The Bookie and the Bruiser is a period crime flick that teams Vaughn with Adrien Brody, and the film is set to be shot later this year.
According to the release from Anton, the company financing the film, “The Bookie & the Bruiser is set in 1959 New York City and features a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner and an oversized Italian-American tough named Boscolo from the Lower East Side, both of whom served overseas in World War II and returned changed men who no longer fit inside the lives they’d left behind.

Even after almost a decade, critics and audiences continue to heap praise on Mad Max: Fury Road. The 2015 sci-fi classic earns every accolade, from its subtle character work to its jaw-dropping visuals. But there’s one thing that cannot be said about Fury Road: that it has no CG.
True, director George Miller and his stunt team did many of the most impressive action sequences in-camera. But he did so with the assistance of computer graphics to erase the safety wires and other rigging. In other words, Miller has no problem using computer effects, provided that they don’t get in the way of the story he’s telling.

Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.
Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

"So it could be anyone?" Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller / serial killer mystery title Boneyard, which is being dumped on VOD this July if anyone wants to watch. The title card in the trailer even says this movie is "inspired by true crime stories" which probably means this script went into production because they wanted to capitalize on the obsession with true crime right now. When the remains of women are discovered in the New Mexico desert, an extensive investigation is launched. Inspired by true crime stories, this chilling crime-thriller follows detectives on a hunt for the killer. As each of their agendas and methods clash, a tangled web of intrigue casts suspicion in all directions. As usual. The film stars Brian Van Holt, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Nora Zehetner, Michael Sirow, Spice Williams-Crosby, Weston Cage, Gabrielle Haugh, and Mel Gibson. Francis Lawrence's 2007 post-apocalyptic drama "I Am Legend" is based loosely on the celebrated 1954 novel by Richard Matheson. The original novel is set in the near future of 1976 when a destructive war has ravaged the Earth, and a horrible virus has infected the survivors. The virus transforms its victims into pale-skinned, nocturnal ghouls with an appetite for human blood, more or less making them vampires. The novel follows Robert Neville, seemingly the last human alive, as he tries to survive in a ravaged Los Angeles and study the virus during the daylight hours. The title comes from the novel's famous twist ending.
"I Am Legend" was adapted to film in 1964 as "The Last Man on Earth," and in 1971 as "The Omega Man," before Lawrence's 2007 version. Lawrence's version transposes the action to New York and makes Neville (Will Smith) into a surviving virologist attempting to come up with a cure for the vampire virus.

There's a case to be made that Chris Hemsworth is the most talented of the Marvel Studios Chrises. He's got great comedic energy and leaned into that with his later performances as Thor (even if he admittedly went overboard in "Thor: Love and Thunder"). His vengeance-driven God of Thunder is the highlight of "Infinity War" too.
He's also making interesting career choices. I'm a Captain America fan, but Chris Evans has not challenged himself as an actor since "Snowpiercer." ("Knives Out" was just him dusting off his pre-Cap screen persona of a cocky a-hole.) Chris Pratt has waltzed his way into being Hollywood's leading voice actor despite his anonymous performances in "The Super Mario Brothers" and soon, "The Garfield Movie." Hemsworth takes paycheck gigs (see: "Extraction" and his voice acting turn as young Optimus Prime in "Transformers: One" this coming Summer), but he shows ambition too. Kevin Costner starred in the title role in the 1991 blockbuster film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Chris Hemsworth is totally unrecognizable in his makeup and costumes in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The actor spent hours in the makeup chair each day, even donning a prosthetic nose and transforming himself into Dr. Dementus. The loud villain is far different from his Marvel character Thor, however, Hemsworth can’t seem to shake off one choice of attire for both roles. His Furiosa character also has to wear a cape, which he finds so impractical.

Luca Guadagnino’s tennis relationship drama “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) opens Friday amidst chatter that it represents the rarest of films — a wide-release American sex sizzler, an erotically charged story with young actors with sexual impulses central to its plot.

George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road spent so much time in development that its previous star, Mel Gibson, seemingly got too old for the action role. Gibson was replaced by Tom Hardy in the 2015 film, which went on to become one of the greatest action films of all time. Mad Max: Fury Road was released in 2015 and the critically acclaimed film is yet to receive a sequel after nearly a decade. Miller has moved on to focus on the prequel film, Furiosa, where Anya Taylor-Joy will play the younger version of Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa from the 2015 film.

For decades, the Mad Max franchise has brought the outer reaches of chaos and imagination within the audience’s reach. From the brain of George Miller was born an apocalyptic wasteland that can neither be defined as dysfunctional nor dystopian since Mad Max has always existed within a framework of structured madness.

With Imperators, War Boys, Crow Fishers, and Buzzards populating and running wild on the wasteland, the world of Mad Max is devoid of limits. As such, to continue to explore such a world would mean breaking down its mystical elements and essentially making it redundant. The best solution in such a scenario is to quit while one’s still ahead and keep the legacy of Mel Gibson, George Miller, Charlize Theron, and Tom Hardy intact.

When Tony Scott died in 2012, he left behind more than a few unfinished projects, including a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s iconic Western, The Wild Bunch.
L.A. Confidential screenwriter Brian Helgeland was attached to write the script for the remake of The Wild Bunch for Tony Scott, and he spilled a few details about the project while speaking with Inverse, including that it would have been set in the modern day.
“I also wrote 45 pages of The Wild Bunch for Tony to direct before he died. Sadly, I always say that I’m still on page 45 of that project,” Helgeland said. “It’s pretty violent and set in the modern day. The plot revolves around L.A. rampart cops that were being sent to prison, but during the trial, they’re still technically free. Brian Cox probably didn’t even have to engage the whole power of his acting talent in his recently ended black comedy drama show Succession — his character’s boldness and straightforward manner of speaking the truth seem to be a part of the actor’s personality too.
While nobody would find a safe place to hide from Cox’s harsh criticism towards actors and films at HistFest a couple of weeks ago, it wasn’t only Joaquin Phoenix’s Napoleon that got all the heat, but also Mel Gibson’s biggest achievement in the industry.
A proud Scottish man, Brian Cox is definitely into historical accuracy — and he won’t tolerate it when this accuracy isn’t 100%. At the same HistFest the actor revealed that he’s definitely not a fan of Braveheart, Mel Gibson’s 1995 directorial and acting feature that took home five Academy awards, including for Best Picture.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite film series. Similar to his namesake George Lucas and his brainchild Star Wars, Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by three successful sequels in the 80s.

Now, the Lorenzo’s Oil director has roped in one of Hollywood’s big draws Anya Taylor-Joy along with Chris Hemsworth for the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Interestingly, this film has been in the making for many years , and was almost developed into an anime feature.

From sharing repugnance towards Wbd’s handling of Turner Classic Movies to blasting Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Napoleon, Brian Cox has never bothered filtering his opinions. Recently, while sharing his distaste for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, the Succession star stressed that Phoenix was terrible in the role, claiming he’d done a better job as France’s first emperor.
However, his criticisms weren’t limited to Scott’s historical epic, as the actor also took shots at one of Mel Gibson’s most acclaimed works to date, which scored five Oscar wins, including Best Picture.

“Let’s fucking go!”
Marvel on Monday dropped a new trailer for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” one that includes a whole lot more Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) than the Super Bowl’s teaser-trailer. The “official trailer” has plenty of meta Disney-is-a-prude references courtesy of (mostly) Ryan Reynolds: There’s the “pegging” joke and one about the “one thing” MCU boss Kevin Feige would not let “Deadpool” do. Per Wade Wilson, that’s cocaine (no matter what you call it). Feige is among the film’s producers.
Deadpool also calls for a “third-act flashback” and a “big, slow-motion action sequence” in the trailer. The “Deadpool” films don’t just break the fourth wall, they run a Colossus through it.
Shawn Levy directs “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which also stars Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.

From his lack of interest in Jeremy Strong’s Method acting to his distaste for Warner Bros. Discovery’s handling of Turner Classic Movies, Brian Cox has never been a man who hides his true opinions. The latest target of his colorful ire? Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon.”
In a recent appearance at HitsFest in London (via The Standard), Cox made it clear that he was no fan of Scott’s film, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous French general-turned-emperor. While the “Succession” star didn’t have anything redeeming to say about the film as a whole, he placed most of the blame on Phoenix for his performance.
“It’s terrible,” Cox said of the film. “A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix. It really is appalling. I don’t know what he was thinking. I think it’s totally his fault and I don’t think Ridley Scott helps him.

The new iteration of “The Office” currently in development has started to flesh out its cast.
Variety has confirmed with sources that Sabrina Impacciatore and Domhnall Gleeson are attached to the project, which remain in development at Universal Television. They would occupy two roles in what would be an ensemble cast, like the original versions of the show.
Reps for Utv declined to comment.
Greg Daniels and Michael Koman are co-creating the new series. It has previously been reported that it is not a reboot of “The Office” but is set in the same universe, meaning it would likely be set in a different office setting with all new characters.
Gleeson has recently starred in shows such as “Alice & Jack,” “The Patient,” “Frank of Ireland,” and “Run.” He is perhaps best known for his role as General Hux in the new “Star Wars” film trilogy. He has also starred in films such as “Frank,...

Brian Cox Calls Joaquin Phoenix’s Performance In Napoleon “Truly Terrible”; Pokes Fun At His Name, “Wackeen… Wacky” (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Succession Star Brian Cox is not one to mince his words. The Veteran Actor, who has played timeless roles, has always made headlines because of his candor. He had feelings about Joaquin Phoenix‘s Napolean portrayal and is letting everyone know. Cox made some shocking revelations and said, “A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix.” Ouch, but if you think that is harsh, you will be surprised by his statements.
Brian played the role of Media Moghul Logan Roy, the patriarch who puts his kids through a game of hoops and leaps to take over the seat of the media conglomerate in the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series. The actor, the polar opposite of his character, has been known to stir feelings up because of his new statements at a London fest.

True to form, actor Brian Cox doesn’t hold back when critiquing Ridley Scott’s Napoleon. He doesn’t have much time for Braveheart, either.
Seldom one to mince his words, Brian Cox has offered an unfiltered review of Ridley Scott’s 2023 historical epic, Napoleon. The film was, the Succession actor said, “Terrible.”
Nor did Cox have much time for Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as the title figure. It was “a truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix,” he added.
Cox made the comments in a talk hosted by Clive Myrie called History on Stage and Screen. It was part of HistFest, an event held at the British Library earlier in April; during it, Cox waded in not only on Napoleon’s historical accuracy, but also the quality of the film as a piece of drama.

Actor Brian Cox wasn’t impressed with fellow actor Joaquin Pheonix’s performance in ‘Napoleon’.
Cox didn’t mince words when talking about Phoenix’s performance, reports ‘People’ magazine.

Mark Wahlberg is inevitably widely recognized as one of the most talented actors in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry. From his immaculate acting skills to his absolutely breathtaking physique, the 52-year-old actor continues to charm his fans from all across the globe to the core. But many years before he attained this respectable feat, Wahlberg wasn’t as confident as he is now.

In fact, the Ted star wasn’t so sure of his own talent in the acting field when he was an aspiring actor, only just starting out. The casting, in particular, had been quite a long process, and inherently, the movie was far from being instantaneous. To begin with, it was nearly unimaginable to have any other actor playing Max after Mel Gibson elevated the character to an epic height in the Miller-directed 1979 movie, Mad Max.

Mel Gibson’s breakout film Mad Max was released 45 years ago this week. The film launched the careers of Gibson and director George Miller and opened the global market to Australian New Wave films. The film resulted from a bunch of newcomers coming together to create an independent, dystopian-action film that cost only 400,000 Aud to make. However, the production of the film was extremely dangerous and the crew risked their lives to film several action scenes.

Sasquatch Sunset releases April 12, 2024.
David and Nathan Zellner — known professionally as Zellner Bros. — may not be a household name (yet), but their films have garnered a reputation for defying the standards set by Hollywood. As true auteurs they bring a distinct style and vision to their often unconventional stories. No film is a truer depiction of this than the bigfoot dramedy Sasquatch Sunset.
