Scout a picturesque cliffside and fire up the wind machines because Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas are ready to feel the wind in their hair while serenading audiences for the musical comedy Power Ballad. The film starring Rudd and Jonas revolves around a wedding singer (Rudd), a rock star (Jonas), and the song that divides them. The project hails from 30West and Anthony Bregman’s Likely Story.
John Carney directs Power Ballad from a script he co-wrote with Peter McDonald, who wrote and directed the comedy short Pentecost and co-wrote The Bachelor Weekend with John Butler.
“We are so excited to bring John Carney’s next film to Cannes. John has a magic ability to weave great music into wonderfully engaging and universally relatable stories that make audience emotions run high,” said Alex Walton of WME. “Power Ballad is fun and heartwarming – themes that audiences crave today. With the 1995 release of Bad Boys, Will Smith may have achieved a major turning point in his career toward becoming one of the biggest stars in the history of Tinseltown. His performance in the action flick proved that he could manage a large-scale production, which helped him secure roles in other popular 1990s movies such as Independence Day and Men in Black.
However, did you know that Smith took issue with director Michael Bay’s well-known choice to have the actor, now 55, run in a scene while sporting ‘no shirt’? Well, Bay could see he was helping the actor establish him as a real movie star, and the s*x appeal would help him no doubt. And seems the director was absolutely right.
And that’s why Smith has since expressed regret to Bay for the argument in a lighthearted manner.

Hello, and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline. Today I’m chatting with Power Book III: Raising Kanan star, Patina Miller. As a major talent across film, television and musical theater Miller portrays Raquel “Raq” Thomas on the Starz original series which is coming up on the end of its third season.
Raising Kanan is the third show in the Power Universe. This one is about a young Kanan Stark (played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s character from the first series) and how he joins his family’s growing and dangerous drug business. It takes place in Queens, New York during the 1990’s.
Raq is the mother of Kanan. To Kanan, she might come across as affectionate, yet on the streets, she embodies the epitome of toughness, navigating the male-dominated world with a blend of coldness, determination,...

"Bad Boys" is something of an unlikely franchise. The first film is a comedy of errors; a buddy cop pic in which two very different partners have to pretend to be each other. Then there's the sequel, the bombastic, over-the-top, gleefully vile "Bad Boys II," in which director Michael Bay goes full Bayhem. And then we have the surprisingly good "Bad Boys For Life," a third film in which the characters have grown up a bit (it's also the only film in the series that Bay didn't direct). A fourth film, currently untitled, is in the works. But until that movie gets here, we have three films to deal with, and we went ahead and ranked them below!

Who would have thought that one of the more enduring family movies in the last 20 years would come from Brett Ratner and star Nicolas Cage? Indeed, The Family Man was only a modest success when it came out over the holiday season in 2000, but it has since inspired rip-offs and remakes and is a beloved classic for many of us.
In it, Nicolas Cage plays a high-flying businessman named Jack Campbell, who doesn’t appreciate the little things in life, such as Christmas. It’s lonely at the top, but he consoles himself with his Ferrari, penthouse apartment in New York, and hook-ups with women such as supermodel Amber Valletta, who has a small role as his bedmate early in the film. Yet, being alone on Christmas Eve, he does a good deed when he intervenes in a convenience store standoff by showing empathy towards a wired, gun-toting customer, played by Don Cheadle,...

There are some fascinating names behind A24‘s dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne, beyond stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Not only is it produced by Ari Aster, but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorne, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
The dark comedy marks writer/director Alex Scharfman’s directorial debut.
Award-winning filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween), Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies will compose music for the film.
The dark comedy has fantasy elements baked into the plot, but with Aster and Carpenter involved, it feels like a safe bet that Death of a Unicorne might dip further into genre territory than first glance.

West Duchovny plays a young pharmaceutical salesperson named Shannon Schaeffer in Netflix's "Painkiller," which tells a fictionalized version of the story of how OxyContin helped trigger the United States' opioid crisis. Duchovny's nuanced performance has been earning her some buzz, but while West herself is fairly new to the entertainment industry, her parents most definitely are not.
West, 24, is the daughter of David Duchovny - who's starred in multiple series, including "The X-Files" and "Californication" - and Téa Leoni, who is also an actor with roles in "A League of Their Own," "Fraiser," and more. David and Leoni were married from 1997 to 2014. During their time together, they welcomed West in 1999 and a son named Kyd Miller Duchovny in 2002. Despite separating, David and Leoni seem to remain on good terms, coming together for special occasions and vacations with both of their kids.

Cults come in many shapes, sizes and forms, not all of them involving a charismatic figurehead, secluded hideaway, or cache of weapons. Sometimes, as in Netflix’s lively new Sackler family takedown Painkiller, the angels of death are short-skirted sales reps, heroin Barbies who scream their heads off at sales “conferences” and seduce doctors with gifts, hefty speaker fees, and, sometimes, sex. They’re paid handsomely, plied with Porsches and luxury apartments, all for spreading the lethal lies that Oxycontin isn’t terribly addictive and doctors are professionally if not...

There's no doubt how entertainment can affect us. It can be moving and thrilling and take us places we never imagined we go.
It can also bring us together through shared experiences.
Sometimes, it does a little of everything, as I discovered during a recent interview with Corey Sevier about his Christmas in July movie airing tonight, Take Me Back for Christmas.
This is a movie very close to Sevier's heart, as his wife Kate Pragnell wrote the script, and he directed the film.
He also costars with Vanessa Lengies, who starred alongside him in another Hallmark movie, Heart of the Holidays, and whom he had known since he was ten, having met when he starred on Lassie.
I've always been a fan of Hallmark Christmas movies that do the unexpected, and Lengies stars in the movie as Renee, who always dreamed of owning her own business. But when her mother got sick,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
It happens every so often: two Hollywood movies come out around the same time, with a shockingly similar premise. There was "Top Gun" and "Iron Eagle" in 1986, "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano" in 1997, and in more recent times, "Hercules" and "The Legend of Hercules" in 2014. But the most infamous of these twin films battles took place in the summer of '98, when "Deep Impact" went up against "Armageddon" as the two asteroid disaster flicks battled it out for box office supremacy. Ultimately, Michael Bay's "Armageddon" came out on top.
It's not as though director Mimi Leder's "Deep Impact" was a failure — in fact, by many metrics, it was a gigantic success. It's just that it wasn't quite as big as Bay's bombastic spectacle starring Bruce Willis,...

In 1998, Earth was under attack by threats from deep space … or, at least, Hollywood would have you believe. Two blockbuster films that year were built around the premise of a space object on a collision course with Earth: Deep Impact and Armageddon. Despite sharing eerily similar plots, both were box office hits. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Deep Impact’s opening in theaters; Téa Leoni, who starred in the movie, told us she knew she wasn’t making a movie with Oscar potential, yet she still had a great time making the film. In the race to establish a foothold as Hollywood’s No. 4 agency, Gersh is taking private equity cash to fuel expansion in the talent representation space.

As part of the deal, members of Crestview will join a newly formed board of directors at the agency, with David and Bob Gersh also joining the board. Reacting to his tweet, a Twitter user wrote, “We will miss you a lot! Is it because of Twitter’s new ownership? All the best to you!”.

Update: High profile Twitter users will likely soon have to pay 8 per month to retain or obtain their blue checkmarks, which the platform has long used to designate individuals whose identity has been verified.
New owner Elon Musk wrote that “Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for 8/month.”
As a number of users, including Stephen King, have protested the idea of charging for what was once free, Musk said that those who pay will get priority “in replies, mentions and search,” which he said was essential to curb spam, as well as the ability to post long video and audio and “half as many ads.”
He also wrote that there will be a “paywall bypass for publishers willing to work with us.”

A new study from nonprofit environmental firm Good Energy and the USC Norman Lear Center found few references to climate change and environmental crises in a survey of more than 37,000 scripts from 2016 to 2020.
The study aimed to track the level of “climate change representation” in mainstream scripted entertainment. The data showed that only 2.8 of 37,453 scripts analyzed used any “climate change keywords,” while only 0.6 featured the words “climate change.” Only 10 of stories that depicted “extreme weather events” tied the occurance to any form of climate change, while a mere 12 of those tied the problem to the use of fossil fuels.
CBS and HBO Max were cited as the broadcast and pay TV platforms with the highest rate of climate change-related scripted content, with CBS clocking in at 7.5 and HBO Max at 6.4. That compares with research indicating that some 40 of Americans live in countries that have been affected by extreme weather events.

Morgan Freeman and his producing partner Lori McCreary are set to produce “War Is Coming,” a short film from Nigerian filmmaking collective The Critics Company.
Freeman and McCreary are producing through their Revelations Entertainment production banner.
“War Is Coming” follows the story of Óla, a brash teenager who discovers he is the reincarnation of a demigod, and spirals into his destiny, unprepared for the events that come as a result of this discovery.
The film will debut at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art’s +234 Connect Festival: A Celebration of Nigerian Creativity. It will also be released simultaneously via The Critics Company’s popular YouTube channel.
Said McCreary: “The Smithsonian’s National Museum was a natural way to premiere the film and introduce the world to the uniquely talented Critics in-person.”

Audiences have been enamored by celebrities since the earliest days of show business. Over the years, red carpet events like the Met Gala exist purely to celebrate the personality and popularity of famous Hollywood A-listers. Some celebs were born for the hot white gleam of the spotlight, and bask in all the attention, while others shy away from it and focus on their craft.
Superstars like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor struggled to have a private life throughout their careers. Monroe publicly admitted that she was expected to be a fantasy and that she never felt accepted for who she truly was, and Taylor was constantly criticized by the media and the public for her choice in love. The pressures of celebrity are most often associated with women, but famous men have their own crosses to bear.

Ben Stiller's 2001 comedy "Zoolander" was an ode to hot people everywhere. The movie, which centers on Stiller as a dim-witted supermodel named Derek Zoolander who is brainwashed and trained to assassinate the Prime Minister of Malaysia in order to ensure that stricter child labor laws are not passed in the country, is one of the strongest comedies of its era, and perhaps Ben Stiller's best work. Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson as well as Stiller turn in comedic performances that are as hilarious as they are absurd.
The movie is also full of celebrity cameos, from Lance Bass to Cuba Gooding Jr. to Donald Trump. Many big names had minor speaking roles in the movie as well, including Vince Vaughn and Alexander Skarsgard.

Although Morgan Freeman has solidified himself in Hollywood as an Oscar-winning actor, he has provided his talents primarily in front of the camera during his illustrious career. However, in the early '90s, Freeman tried his hand at directing his one and only feature-length film. The project was called "Bopha!" and featured Danny Glover in the starring role of a Black policeman during the South African apartheid. Freeman's directorial debut did well with critics, but performed poorly at the box office. He eventually returned to directing with the television series "Madam Secretary," but it took over two decades for that to happen.
The reason for Freeman's extended absence from behind the camera is simpler than one might think. At a point when he was pumping out performances at a considerable rate, Freeman did not particularly enjoy the fact that making "Bopha!" forced him to reject other opportunities for an entire year.

If you love the “Jurassic Park” franchise, chances are a lot of that has to do with Sam Neill and his portrayal of paleontologist Alan Grant.
In the first film, Grant is a somewhat grumpy scientist who is convinced by John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to assess his newly designed theme park. Of course, all goes to hell, and Grant must help the survivors escape the dinosaur-overrun island. Neill returned for the third film, “Jurassic Park III,” this time getting conned by an estranged couple (played by William H. Macy and Téa Leoni) into looking for their missing son on the second island. Since then he’s been absent. Until now.
With “Jurassic World: Dominion,” Neill returns to the franchise as Grant, who along with his old pals Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) investigate a mystery connected to the dinosaurs from Jurassic World and team up with...

To work with Cloris Leachman was nothing less than liberating. That’s how writer-director James L. Brooks remembered his collaborations with the beloved actor who died Jan. 26 at the age of 94.
“Life was not as confining when she was around,” Brooks told Variety of his experiences working with Leachman in the 1970s on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and many years later on his much-praised 2004 comedy “Spanglish.”
“She was the only person I ever knew who could make a certain kind of edgy outrageousness be lovable,” Brooks recalled. “You never knew what she was going to do. She was spontaneous. And there was a vulnerability to her. She was intrinsically funny but also brilliant funny.”
Leachman’s versatility was formidable. She became an Oscar winner for “The Last Picture Show” two years into her five-season run on “Mary Tyler Moore.”

This article contains spoilers for Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous season 2 and the Jurassic franchise at large.
Our first introduction to Jurassic Park and its dinosaurs is on a dark and misty night, Men wait with guns as the crane crashes through the forest carrying a Velociraptor we are only allowed glimpses of. Tension hangs in the air. When she tries to escape, there are cries of “Shoot her! Shoot her!” The raptor attacks, and rest in peace Jophery, first victim of the monster.
If this scene tells us anything, it is that we are undoubtedly watching a monster movie. And Jurassic Park is. Throughout the first film in this now-lengthy franchise, characters are eaten and dismembered and terrorized as the result of the monsters running free and doing whatever they want with no regard for human safety. Yet, many years later, in the second season of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,...

“Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds,” the upcoming documentary from acclaimed film director Werner Herzog, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on November 13. The streaming service revealed the trailer for the project on Friday morning.
Per Apple, “Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds” takes viewers on an extraordinary journey to discover how shooting stars, meteorites, and deep impacts have focused the human imagination on other realms and worlds, and on our past and our future. The upcoming documentary hails from Herzog and volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer, who previously appeared in Herzog’s “Encounters at the End of the World” and “Into the Inferno.”
Although IndieWire’s David Ehrlich had mixed feelings about “Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds” in his grade B- review of the documentary in September, he nonetheless praised Herzog’s work on the project.

The original Jurassic Park trilogy will be exiting Netflix at the end of September, two months after the films arrived from NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
The first three films in Universal’s multibillion-dollar Jurassic Park franchise — 1993’s Jurassic Park, 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park and 2001’s Jurassic Park III — came to Netflix on August 1 following a 17-day window on Peacock that began with the launch of the NBCUniversal service.
They will now leave Netflix on September 30. It’s not yet known where the titles will land next.
Steven Spielberg directed the first two films in the Jurassic Park franchise. Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum starred in the original movie Jurassic Park. Goldblum returned for Lost World, alongside Julianne Moore and Pete Postlethwaite. Neill returned for the Joe Johnston-helmed Jurassic Park III, opposite William H. Macy and Téa Leoni.

Dino come, dino go: The first three “Jurassic Park” films will roll off Netflix’s U.S. service at the end of September, just two months after the streamer got its talons on the Universal fan-favorite trilogy.
Meanwhile, Netflix has set a Sept. 18 premiere date for DreamWorks Animation’s “Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous,” a new animated series set within the same timeline as 2015’s “Jurassic World” blockbuster.
Netflix became the U.S. streaming home for first “Jurassic Park” films as of Aug. 1, after NBCUniversal’s Peacock got just a 17-day window on the titles after that service’s national debut. On Wednesday, Netflix announced that the three movies — 1993’s “Jurassic Park,” 1997’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” and 2001’s “Jurassic Park III” — will expire on Sept. 30.

The streaming-rights revolving door continues: Netflix will be the U.S. streaming home for the original trilogy of Universal’s “Jurassic Park” films starting next month.
That comes after NBCUniversal’s Peacock got a brief 17-day window on the titles — the original 1993 “Jurassic Park,” 1997’s “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” and 2001’s “Jurassic Park III.” For now, it doesn’t appear as if the two most recent titles in the franchise — 2015’s “Jurassic World” and 2018’s “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” are available on a subscription-streaming service in the U.S.
Netflix announced that the trio of dinosaur pics, based on the Michael Crichton sci-fi novels, will be coming to the streaming service’s U.S. lineup starting Aug 1. The deal for the Universal movies shows that — even with the media conglomerates launching their own direct-to-consumer streaming vehicles — Netflix isn’t being completely frozen out of the licensing game for library titles.

Adam Sandler is one of those actors you either love or hate. The overwhelming majority of his films are comedies that take place in exotic locations, something that he’s confirmed is a choice made so that he and his friends – who regularly star alongside him in his movies – can treat the experience like a vacation. It makes sense, of course – why not enjoy some gorgeous views while you’re shooting a fun film with your pals?
Despite the beautiful scenery and admittedly hilarious casting choices Sandler makes for his movies, however, they’re frequently critical bombs that many feel scrape the bottom of the barrel for laughs. That’s not to say every Sandler comedy is a total bust, though. Classics like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy rank among some fans’ favorites, and even most of his mediocre offerings have at least a handful of hilarious moments.
