We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

After nearly 35 years, the "Predator" franchise is still going strong. Despite a fair share of disappointment during its seven-film (and counting) run, every decade produces a strong chapter that reinvigorates interest in the mysterious alien hunters. John McTiernan's muscle-bound 1987 creature feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger remains the best. Still, more recent offerings like Nimród Antal's 2010 sequel "Predators" and Dan Trachtenberg's 2022 prequel "Prey" have closed the gap and provided hope for future entries.
Delightfully R-rated, the "Predator" series follows a group of elite alien warriors, brought to life with incredible special effects, who venture to different planets to test themselves against the best killers they can find. Curiously, none of the films have allowed a Predator to claim victory over their most formidable foes, though they do enjoy minor victories that make way for some nasty spine-ripping action. To date, we've seen Predator eliminate its victims in various ways...

Take it outside, Jake Gyllenhaal — there was already a “Road House 2.” And it was awful.
The Og “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze came out in 1989 and made $30 million at the box office — a nice return on investment back in the day. Naturally, MGM struck while the iron was hot: a scant 17 years later, the studio released a straight-to-dvd sequel, “Road House 2: Last Call” (2006). Exactly 17 more years later, I went straight to Vudu to buy it. I did not get a good Roi on my $9.99.
Look, I knew what I was getting into. Like you, I didn’t realize there was a “Road House 2” until Doug Liman made a “Road House 3.”
Still the only “Road House” to get a theatrical release, the Swayze flick ended up doing most of its damage on home entertainment. The film isn’t well-reviewed — it has a 41 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 on...

It can’t be denied that as far as martial arts movies go, the best ones come from Asia, particularly Hong Kong during their action heyday, which was arguably the 70s, 80s and first half of the ’90s. That said, martial arts movies were also making a foothold in the States at the time, thanks mainly to Bruce Lee-mania following the release of Enter the Dragon. Before that movie, very few actors in Hollywood seemed like they were credible martial artists, except maybe James Coburn, a student of Lee’s, who pulled off some pretty good-looking moves in the otherwise silly Our Man Flint movies. Steve McQueen also had training but didn’t use martial arts on screen.
Up to then, though, the most notable uses of martial arts in movies usually revolved around Judo, with James Cagney showing off some good moves in the film Blood on the Sun,...

Writer Shane Black pretty much invented the "buddy cop" movie with "Lethal Weapon," his gloriously violent Christmas-set action pic that introduced moviegoers to LAPD Detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). The basic set-up of the franchise, which was helmed entirely by Richard Donner: Murtaugh plays things by the book and is close to retirement (he somehow remains "close to retirement" through a series of four films). Riggs, in sharp contrast, is a trigger-happy psycho, suicidal in the wake of the death of his wife. These two mismatched cops become partners and, of course, friends. Also, they kill a lot of people. While this is one franchise that should probably finally retire (just like Murtaugh), there's a fifth film in the works.
But we're not here to talk about that. Instead, let's go back to the days when Mel Gibson sported a mullet and wasn't problematic!

Inspiration strikes at the oddest times. Recently, I was watching Blumhouse's "Night Swim" and started thinking about all the strangest killer objects in the history of horror movies. "Where would a swimming pool rank on such a list," I pondered. "Would it rank lower or higher than a hungry bed?" These are the hard-hitting questions that race through my head, only eased by tasks like ranking all the craziest, head-scratchiest, most out-of-bounds killer objects in horror movie history.
We're not talking about flesh and blood killers or animal attackers. Even something like "Santa Jaws" is omitted from contention because while you could blame either the magical pen or sketchbook canvas that brings the Great White Santa to life, it's still a jingle-jangling shark gobbling up victims. This list is dedicated to deadly things that should not kill. Monstrous versions of household items that spring to life and slay the innocent with a most baffling reaction.

Arriving at the tail end of the machismo-laden action movie boom of the 1980s, Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break represented a different kind of blockbuster. As Gus Van Sant did the same year with My Own Private Idaho and the Wachowskis would do with their Matrix films, Bigelow foregrounds the androgynous qualities of Keanu Reeves, presenting his rookie F.B.I. agent Johnny Utah as a lithe, sensitive soul who infiltrates a gang of bank robbers not through a projection of strength but an appeal to the criminals’ own, surprisingly delicate natures.
The film begins with Johnny arriving at the F.B.I.’s Los Angeles branch for his first assignment. There, he’s greeted and immediately insulted by the director (John C. McGinley), whose strict rules for personal conduct and mirthless commitment to the job paint him as one of the dying relics of the service’s original, Hoover-led era. The other agents,...

Along with The Mist and Dreamcatcher, Cycle of the Werewolf was one of my first introductions to Stephen King, so the Master of Horror's powerfully poignant prose in that novella—combined with the legendary Bernie Wrightson's amazing illustrations—will forever hold a special place in my horror-loving heart, and so too does its film adaptation: Dan Attias' Silver Bullet (which really captures the blood-soaked slice of small-town life in Tarker's Mills).
It's especially thrilling, then, that Scream Factory will be unleashing their Collector's Edition of Silver Bullet on 4K Uhd and Blu-ray just in time for the holiday season, and we have a look at the full list of bonus features fans can look forward to, including a new audio commentary with Eric Vespe and Scott Wampler of The Kingcast!

Newly surfaced video footage has unveiled a troubling incident involving a woman who claims that actor Gary Busey, 79, collided with her car and fled before exchanging insurance details. The Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station has initiated an investigation into these allegations of a hit-and-run.
The incident reportedly transpired when Busey was departing a shopping center along the picturesque Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.
According to an unidentified woman featured in footage published by TMZ, Busey was reversing his vehicle when it made contact with another car. Rather than halting and addressing the situation as expected, the woman claimed that Busey abruptly left the scene, prompting her to pursue him fervently while filming the incident.

Director Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner was written by Hampton Fancher and David Webb Peoples, based on the Philip K. Dick story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – and when director Paul W.S. Anderson brought Peoples’ sci-fi action script Soldier to the screen sixteen years later, he and his crew added in references that set the story within the universe of Blade Runner. But during an interview with author Danny Stewart for the book Soldier: From Script to Screen (pick up a copy on Amazon), Peoples revealed that he had never intended for Soldier to be connected to Blade Runner.
When asked if he wrote Soldier as a “side-quel” to Blade Runner that was set in the same universe, Peoples answered, “No, I never had any thoughts about that.” The screenwriter went on to reveal, “I wrote Soldier in 1984. Very quickly on my own. I wrote it because...

“The Taking of the Pelham One Two Three,” from 1974 — avoid the two remakes — is a superb thriller about four men who take over a New York subway car and hold the passengers, conductor and an undercover policeman hostage unless they get $1 million (remember that was a lot of money 49 years ago). If their demands aren’t met, they will start killing hostages. Directed by Joseph Sargent and adapted by Peter Stone from the best-selling novel by John Godey, “Taking” boasts a stellar cast at the top of their game including Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw, Hector Elizondo and Martin Balsam. It’s hard to believe today, after Speed and four Matrix movies, and four John Wick movies, but there
was a time when Keanu Reeves was not considered viable as an action star, especially after his portrayal
of lovable time-traveling doofus Ted Theodore Logan in Bill & Ted’S Excellent Adventure.
But that perception radically changed in 1991 with the adrenaline extravaganza Point Break, which
featured Reeves as an FBI agent hot on the trail of some bank-robbing surfers led by Patrick Swayze. But how exactly did this preposterous combination ever reach the beach? Grab your board and catch a wave as we find out Wtf Happened to this movie!
The idea for Point Break first surfaced in the mind of filmmaker Rick King [The Killing Time] after he
saw a newspaper article declaring Los Angeles as the bank-robbing capital of America thanks to the
getaway convenience provided by the city’s numerous freeways.

Stephen King isn’t just an author by this point: He’s an institution, a legacy of classic horror stories that capture our imaginations, fuel our nightmares, and speak — when he’s at his best — to our shared experiences as flawed, emotional beings. The best King stories scare so many of us that we all feel connected, and even the worst are usually pretty fun.
King’s books and short stories quickly became hit movies, many of them celebrated in their time, and some flopped so hard that hardly anybody remembers them. Cataloguing every adaptation might be a fool’s errand, so we made some tough choices and decided to focus only on his theatrical releases.
And even then, there are so many King adaptations that it gets tricky. We’re not including the made-for-tv films (which are legion), and the sequels to King’s work rarely have anything to do with the source material,...

It’s time for a new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? video series, and with this one we’re looking back to 1985 to see how a Stephen King “novelette” called Cycle of the Werewolf became the 1985 film Silver Bullet (watch it Here). To hear all about the changes Cycle of the Werewolf went through on the way to becoming Silver Bullet, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Dan Attias from a screenplay written by Stephen King himself, Silver Bullet has the following synopsis: When a series of unexplained murders occurs in the normally quiet town of Tarker’s Mill, the residents decide to hunt down the killer. However, many of these vigilantes end up dead, and those who don’t are no closer to finding an assailant. But, when a young wheelchair-using boy named Marty encounters a werewolf one night, the pieces begin to come together.

Patrick Scott McDermott (Chicago Med, South Side) is playing the role of Lucas Hollister in the film. Frances Fisher also stars.
The film restarted production last week following the October 2021 death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after a prop gun held by Baldwin discharged during...

Everyone loves a celebrity comeback story, and few celebrities are as beloved as Keanu Reeves. The actor was a massive action star in the 1990s and early 2000s but had about a decade in his career where he tried a bit of everything, starring in films ranging from the time-traveling romance "The Lake House" to the cult comic favorite "Constantine." While some of these films are more appreciated in retrospect, none of them were major blockbusters or critical darlings. Reeves sort of fell off the radar as far as a lot of mainstream America was concerned. Then along came the first "John Wick" back in 2014, sparking what fans now call the "Keanaissance," rocketing the performer to near-iconic action hero status. "John Wick" was released right around the time social media and meme culture were really blowing up, and Keanu Reeves memes are plentiful.

When Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival late last May, the buzz for its young star Austin Butler grew quickly to a deafening din. The film’s reception was capped by a 12-minute standing ovation, and the conventional wisdom was that the Oscar and potentially the Screen Actors Guild Award as well was Butler’s to lose. As of this writing, the 31-year-old is the second choice in the Academy Awards lead actor race as well as in the SAG Awards actor competition on Gold Derby behind Brendan Fraser for “The Whale,” positions that have rarely shifted since last fall. Colin Farrell of “The Banshees of Inisherin” is solidly in third place in both odds.
But the history of both the Oscars and SAGs tells us that Butler may be underestimated. He follows, after all, in the grand tradition of actors who have transformed themselves into real-life music legends,...

Comedians David Spade and the late Chris Farley were one of the most memorable comedy duos of the '90s, both as ⅔ of the Gap Girls on "Saturday Night Live" and as co-leads of two of the decade's classic buddy films. Decades beyond the release of the latter film, Penelope Spheeris' "Black Sheep," it still delivers plenty of Farley's physical comedy -- its funniest scenes sees him tussle with a bat and a steep hillside -- and strong buddy chemistry with Spade. But the end product mimics the earlier "Tommy Boy," but without much of that film's magic, leading one of its leading men to wish the movie had been axed.
Coming out of "SNL" fame, Farley signed a two-picture deal with Paramount. "Tommy Boy'' fulfilled the first half, grossing 32 million on a 20 million budget. Following Farley's Tommy Callahan III on a mission to sell brake pads with a less-than-thrilled Spade in tow,...

1994’s Surviving the Game is one of the unheralded gems of nineties action flicks. It stars Ice-t, many years before he became part of the cast of Law & Order Svu. Back then, he was known primarily as a rapper, but following roles in New Jack City, Trespass and Ricochet, he became an up-and-comer, with many pegging him as a potential urban action star.
In Surviving the Game, Ice-t plays a homeless man being hunted in the wild in a variation on the classic tale, Most Dangerous Game. This story has always been excellent fodder for action flicks, with the previous year’s Hard Target ranking as one of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s classics.
While New Line Cinema couldn’t give the movie a massive budget, they didn’t cheap out either, giving Ice-t a great director in Ernest Dickerson, who was Spike Lee’s go-to cinematographer and the director of the well-received gangsta tale,...

Michael Sarrazin is a wealthy candy maker who instigates the party (code name “Gumball”) and his car-happy co-stars include Raul Julia and Gary Busey. As far as Christmas action movies go, most would say John McTiernan’s Die Hard takes the crown as the greatest of all time. However, another action classic that hit theaters a year before, Lethal Weapon, is also set around the holiday. Written by a young Shane Black (using the Christmas setting that would become his trademark), this wound up being perhaps the most influential action movie of all time, maybe even more so than Die Hard (although that’s debatable). While not the first buddy cop movie (older films like Freebie and the Bean and Best Movie You Never Saw fave Running Scared are also part of the genre), it set the tone for many films to follow. There was something so perfect about the pairing of Mel Gibson’s crazed Martin Riggs and Danny Glover’s family man Roger Murtagh, along with Richard Donner’s ace direction. The three men loved each other,...

Christmas is fast approaching and while some will be busy decking the halls with boughs of holly, for many action movie fans the holidays are all about indulging in the time-honored tradition of watching Die Hard.
There are some who would have you believe Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie. To them, we say “bah, humbug,” or rather “yippee-ki-yay….” For one thing, it’s got John McClane cast firmly in the role of Santa Claus, roaming the corridors of Nakatomi Plaza trying to find out “who’s naughty or nice.” Then there is Han Gruber, a modern-day Grinch with a dash of Ebenezer Scrooge intent on ruining the festive fun. He sees the error in his ways, of course. Unfortunately for him, that moment of realization comes as he takes a swan dive off the top of a very tall building.

And he surely delivers an incandescent performance as Elvis Aron Presley.

A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series has just been released, and with this one we’re taking a look back at a werewolf movie that’s one of the more underrated entries in the sub-genre despite the fact that it was inspired by a Stephen King story. It’s the 1985 film Silver Bullet (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Dan Attias from a screenplay written by Stephen King himself (based on King’s novelette Cycle of the Werewolf), Silver Bullet has the following synopsis:
When a series of unexplained murders occurs in the normally quiet town of Tarker’s Mill, the residents decide to hunt down the killer. However, many of these vigilantes end up dead, and those who don’t are no closer to finding an assailant. But,...

In filmmaker Andrew Balasia’s comedy drama Souvenirs a friend-for-hire balances his time with his peculiar clientele as he prepares for his most challenging assignment to date, becoming a father. Balasia tells his story across a series of scenes in which his protagonist plays out the different roles required of him with clients, who vary in their degrees of being wonderfully weird. During these scenes, Balasia is able to narratively break down the fundamentals of human interactions whilst stylistically managing to highlight each encounter through a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere comprised of a vivid colour palette and serene cinematography. Dn had the pleasure of speaking with Balasia about his desire to explore the basis of human interactions, the real-world story his film is based on, and the technical production behind his almost-psychedelic aesthetic.

Gary Busey was seen with his pants down in public view as he faced claims of sexual assault — and his rep has now given a possible explanation for the incident.
The assault claims came after at least three women filed police reports following the actor’s appearance at a Cherry Hill hotel event named Monster-Mania Con.
The 78-year-old was a featured guest at the horror film and memorabilia fan convention.
As previously reported, women claimed they were inappropriately touched by the actor during paid photoshoots.
Cherry Hill Police responded to the complaints, and Busey has been charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact, and one count of harassment.
Busey has denied the sexual assault allegations in a video filmed after the charges were filed.

Tuesday’s Google Doodle is dedicated to celebrating the 91st birthday of singer and entertainer Coccinelle.
The French actor, real name Jacqueline-Charlotte Dufresnoy, was a pioneer for the LGBT+ community and was the first person in her country to undergo gender-affirming surgery.
Designated male at birth, Coccinelle grew up with a deep, inner sense of being a woman, and wished to pursue her interests in fashion and performance.
During her teenage years, after wearing a red dress with black polka dots to a party, the famous entertainer earned the nickname Coccinelle, which translates to ladybug in English.
In 1953, Coccinelle made her stage debut at Madame Arthur, a cabaret venue in Paris, performing a song from the film Premier rendez-vous. After that, she earned a role at Le Carrousel de Paris, a popular music hall with many transgender performers, where her talent and stage presence captivated audiences.

Gary Busey on Monday denied that he had acted inappropriately at the Monster-Mania convention in New Jersey over the weekend of Aug. 12, saying the accusations of groping were “all false.”
While pumping gas in Malibu, California, a TMZ cameraman asked Busey for his side of the story. The 78-year-old actor said “nothing happened,” and that the entire interaction with a woman who claimed he tried to unhook her bra and another who said he grabbed her butt lasted “less than 10 seconds.”
“[They] made up the story that I assaulted them sexually, and I did not… It was all false,” he said. He added that he has eyewitnesses who can back up his version of events.
