As two titans of Tinseltown in the 1980s and early 1990s, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger found ideal rivals in one another and grew so competitive that the Hollywood heroes resorted to Machiavellian tactics to gain status as the world’s top action star, they revealed on Tuesday in a televised interview from TMZ.
The septuagenarian stars, who are now close friends, sat down for an hourlong primetime special called TMZ Presents: Arnold & Sly: Rivals, Friends, Icons, which debuted on Fox on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Et. With TMZ founder Harvey Levin taking on the interviewing honors, the two action flick legends discussed some revealing details of their past rivalry, the troubled childhoods both say they’ve overcome and the faces they’d place alongside their own on a hypothetical Mount Rushmore for action heroes.
“Well, what is your body fat?’” Schwarzenegger recalled while discussing the multifaceted rivalry. “I was down to 7 percent.

The Golden Girls doesn’t seem like a provocative show at first glance. The sitcom was, however, groundbreaking. All living together, the cast of middle-aged women was certainly a fresh idea. For years, fans assumed Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Estelle Getty, the actors who played Blanche Devereaux, Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nylund, and Sophia Petrillo, respectively, were friends outside of work. That wasn’t the case. While several cast members were friendly, Bea Arthur had issues with one of her co-stars. She took issue with Betty White. In a new book, a writer for the series revealed that Arthur thought Betty White was “two-faced.”

On “Music Video Night,” reality TV star Harry Jowsey was going for a “Justin Timberlake” look in his routine with pro partner Rylee Arnold. Alas, the couple scored a mere 24 points (out of 40) for their jazz set to Nsync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” When critiqued by the judges, Bruno Tonioli quipped that Jowsey’s Timberlake wig looked like it belonged to “Sophia Petrillo” from The Golden Girls. TV Insider asked Jowsey on the post-show press line if he’s aware of who Sophia Petrillo is. “I know the name,” he responded. “If I see a photo of [her], I’d probably know who that is.” Arnold likewise was unfamiliar with the wise-cracking character played by the late Estelle Getty on the NBC sitcom that ran from 1985-1992 and lives on in reruns on Hallmark, in memes, and in clips on Instagram. We pulled up a picture of Sophia on...

After both making good on their recent efforts to become first-time lead acting Emmy contenders, formerly supporting “Succession” cast mates Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook are naturally expected to be similarly bumped up on the next Golden Globes ballot. If they do achieve their first Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Drama Actress notices this winter, the on-screen siblings will join a group of 10 other Golden Globe nominees who succeeded in rebranding their initially supporting characters as lead ones. As it stands, said club has not welcomed a new member – regardless of genre or gender – in two full decades.
Culkin’s Golden Globes resume currently includes three fruitless featured bids for “Succession,” on which he was bested by Ben Whishaw, Stellan Skarsgård and O Yeong-su. Although Snook only has a 2022 supporting nomination for the HBO series to her name, she actually prevailed, even against awards magnet Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus...

The '80s were a different time; shoulder pads were in, Reaganomics was taking over the country, and in 1984, a hyper-stylish show called "Miami Vice" was about to become all the rage. Before the Florida-set cop series ever premiered on NBC, though, it had already inspired another series, one that seemed to have very little in common with the Michael Mann-produced action show.
That series was "The Golden Girls," the popular and gut-bustingly funny sitcom about women of a certain age that has only become more beloved in the decades since it ended. "The Golden Girls" is remembered for its positive and honest conversations about aging and its characters' penchant for savage, hilarious quips. It also bolstered the fame of its already-famous stars, Bea Arthur ("Maude"), Betty White ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"), Rue McClanahan (also "Maude"), and Estelle Getty ("Mask"). Jean Boht, who played the iron-fisted matriarch Nellie Boswell on every episode of the 1986-91 BBC sitcom Bread, has died. She was 91.
Boht died Tuesday, her family announced, saying that she “had been battling vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease with the indefatigable spirit for which she was both beloved and renowned.”
She had been living in Denville Hall, a home in London for actors and other members of the entertainment industry.
Her husband of 52 years, Carl Davis, who composed the scores for The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Abel Gance’s epic 1927 silent film Napoléon, died six weeks ago after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

Estelle Getty (born Estelle Scher) died in 2008 after leaving a trail of outstanding works as an actress, especially her award-winning role as Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls (1985–1992). She was almost 60 years old when she secured her career breakthrough in The Golden Girls, a feat she achieved through persistence. Aside from being a renowned American actress, Getty doubled as a comedian. Over the course of her many decades in the entertainment industry, Getty made a great impact across different departments, including the theater and television. When word got out that Sylvester Stallone was strapping on his climbing gear as Gabriel Walker for a sequel to Renny Harlin’s Cliffhanger, we at JoBlo could barely contain our excitement. Getting behind the camera for Cliffhanger 2, a follow-up to what is objectively one of Stallone’s best films, is Ric Roman Waugh, who recently spoke with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub about plot details for Walker’s next climb.
One year after starring alongside Estelle Getty in the familial comedy Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, Sylvester Stallone strapped in for a nerve-jangling blockbuster with Cliffhanger. Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay co-written by Stallone and Michael France, Cliffhanger finds the Italian Stallion in the role of Gabe Walker, a Colorado Rockies Ranger on the road to recovery after a botched rescue mission. After being pulled back onto the job by an alarming distress call, Gabe and his...

Some actors choose to live life on the edge. In Sylvester Stallone‘s case, he’s about to leap off the edge and hang by a secured cable for Cliffhanger 2! That’s right, friends, the Italian Stallion is strapping in for a reboot sequel to 1993’s Cliffhanger! Stallone returns to the vertigo-inducing action property, with Ric Roman Waugh directing. Mark Bianculliis writing the script, with Neal H. Mortiz’s Original Film producing with Rocket Science. Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions is also getting in on the producing action. Plot details for Cliffhanger 2 remain a mystery, though we know Stallone is reprising his role as Ranger Gabriel “Gabe” Walker for the sequel.

It may have been a staple of the 1980s, but the hit show The Golden Girls still holds a place in the hearts of millions of viewers. To this day, fans love watching reruns of the iconic sitcom and reliving the adventures of Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia. While the four main actors are household names today, it turns out that the breakout star of The Golden Girls wasn’t even supposed to be a main character.
The legacy of ‘The Golden Girls’
Why was The Golden Girls so popular? Viewers looked forward to tuning into the show that featured four older women sharing a house in Miami, and enjoying the hysterical storylines that aired each week. Even more entertaining were the things that fans could expect in almost every episode — the women gathered around the kitchen table discussing their latest problems over a late-night slice of cheesecake, Sophia telling...

Betty White’s death at 99 years old in December 2021 marked the end of an era. She was the last of the main cast members of The Golden Girls to die, and fans mourned the loss. While White’s death closed the book on the series, her legacy and the legacy of her cast mates, Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan, live on in perpetuity. We love watching The Golden Girls still. Still, we can’t help but wonder if there was a better story for the cast that was never written. While The Golden Girls spinoff, The Golden Palace, offered an extension to Rose Nylund, Sophia Petrillo, and Blanche Devereaux’s story, it wasn’t the best one that could have been told. We would have loved to see The Golden Girls head to St. Olaf, Minnesota.

Cheers is streaming in its entirety on Peacock and Paramount+, and a few seasons are still on Hulu. 11 seasons gives you 273 total episodes to watch, but let’s say you’ve already watched them all. At under 30 minutes each, it would only take you 136 hours, so less than a week if you don’t sleep. Anyway, here are five other shows you might like if you also like Cheers.

Bea Arthur is most famous for her stellar role on the beloved sitcom The Golden Girls. She spent seven years of her life starring as the fabulously glib, impatient, and serious Dorothy. She and her costars became a phenomenon, and that included Betty White, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan. They are the funniest, most amusing group of women on television, and nothing has changed even since the last time their show aired in 1992. It’s been 31 years since the show ended, and we still watch these four women living in South Florida as roommates with such joy. However, Bea

At the end of season 4 of “Yellowstone,” Paramount Network’s wildly popular drama, bumbling but endearing ranch hand Jimmy (Jefferson White) is absolved of his debts. He’s still a branded man but he has the freedom to leave the Yellowstone Ranch. And he chooses to stay at the 6666 Ranch in Texas; he’s met a nice girl in Texas. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) lets him go. And we didn’t hear much from Jimmy for the first part of season 5 of “Yellowstone,” until events in the mainline series coalesced to set up a new spinoff (yes another one!)

Sylvester Stallone has recounted his former feud with fellow actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
While the two Hollywood legends are now good friends, having even co-starred in a few films, including The Expendables and Escape Plan, things weren’t always smooth sailing, Stallone admitted.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the two were major box office rivals, having both pioneered similar genres.
On Saturday (12 November), Stallone made an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show and discussed his past grievances with the Terminator star.
“We couldn’t stand to be in the same galaxy together for a while. We truly, truly loathed each other,” the 76-year-old Rocky star revealed.
Stallone then shared a story from the time Schwarzenegger baited him into taking a role in a movie that Schwarzenegger knew was going to be a flop.

It stands as one of the funniest urban legends in Hollywood casting history: that Arnold Schwarzenegger pretended to be interested in Stop! Gather ’round young ones, listen to my tale of titans of old! Long before our action heroes were handsome men like Hemsworth or Evans, bodybuilders ruled the silver screen, like Dolph Lundgren and Carl Weathers and Jessie “The Body” Ventura. But none were greater than former Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Italian Stallion Sylvester Stallone. From their humble cinematic beginnings as Hercules in New York or Joe “Machine Gun” Viterbo in Death Race 2000, the two came to rule cinemas of the 1980s and 90s in action classics such as The Terminator and Rambo: First Blood Part II.
Throughout their careers, the pair had an epic rivalry, one that began with an argument at the 1977 Golden Globe awards and continued as the two battled for box office dominance. While Sly had the greater dramatic and creative chops, as demonstrated by his nuanced turns in the first Rambo and Rocky movies,...

Despite the nostalgic gloss we often apply to the 1980s through the lens of shows like "Stranger Things," the decade Reagan built was a lot weirder than we often choose to remember. There's plenty of questionable fads to look back on with one eyebrow raised but the obsessive culture of health and wellness skyrocketed into the mainstream during this time period, and we're still reeling from the effects of it today.
Current audiences, even those that weren't alive in the 1980s, still have tangential knowledge of the 1980s workout craze thanks to its permeation of pop culture. Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" is a certifiable banger, Apple TV+'s dark comedy of the same name perfectly captures the home video workout tape boom, and as long as people continue to sing "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-Lot, new generations will be introduced to "workout tapes by Fonda."

ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” made the grade with Emmy voters this year, with the freshman comedy about a Philadelphia elementary school scoring seven Emmy nominations, including Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Writing for the show’s star and creator, Quinta Brunson. However, there can be little argument that the show’s breakout character was Ava Coleman, the outrageous and outrageously inept principal played by Janelle James.
James’s work has earned her a nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, her first Emmy bid. In a recent appearance on the ReelBlend podcast, Quentin Tarantino offered no shortage of film opinions, discussing everything from his love for “Top Gun: Maverick” to a plethora of obscure 20th-century films. And while the “Pulp Fiction” director has never been known to shy away from offering a hot take, his opinion on the “Indiana Jones” franchise raised a few eyebrows.
When the subject turned to the world’s greatest archeologist, Tarantino made it clear that he has no affection for “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” The 1989 threequel saw Sean Connery join the franchise as Indiana Jones’ father, Henry Jones Sr. The two men team up to search for the Holy Grail, but even the exciting new MacGuffin wasn’t enough to get Tarantino on board. In fact, he dislikes the film so much that he prefers 2008’s critically maligned “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

“The Golden Girls,” which premiered on NBC in the fall of 1985, was initially presented as a sitcom about three women in their mid-50s and one in her early 80s sharing a house in Miami, Florida. However, most of the cast members’ real life ages did not align with those of their characters. Estelle Getty, who played eldest housemate Sophia, was really only 62 when the show first aired, while two of the quinquagenarian characters were played by 63-year-old actresses Bea Arthur and Betty White. Indeed, the only member of the main quartet who was truly age appropriate was 51-year-old Rue McClanahan.
Each of the four “Golden Girls” actresses took home a single Emmy for their work on the show. McClanahan earned hers in 1987 for a second season episode called “End of the Curse” in which her character, Blanche Devereaux, begins menopause. At 53, she was the sixth oldest winner in the...

In addition, two of the most awarded comedies of all time battled it out, a favorite drama lost the top spot and one of the most celebrated talk shows of all time finally received a top honor. This was also the last year that the Big Four networks received all the nominations for Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series. We’re throwing it back three decades to August 30, 1992, when Tim Allen, Kirstie Alley and Dennis Miller hosted the 44th Primetime Emmy Awards on Fox. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1992.
Between 1989 and 1992, “Cheers” and “Murphy Brown” volleyed the Best Comedy award back and forth. This was “Murphy’s” year, winning in this category for the second and final time. The other sitcoms up were “Brooklyn Bridge,” “Home Improvement” and “Seinfeld.

For years, Mike Hollingsworth has found creative ways to inject jokes into animated comedies. Working as the supervising director on “BoJack Horseman,” as well as “Tuca & Bertie,” “Inside Job,” and more, Hollingsworth fills frame after frame with visual humor — from cutaway punchlines and background puns, to silent callbacks and quips written on T-shirts, chyrons, and more.
Now, he’s applying his impressive skillset to a stone-cold classic of live-action television: “The Golden Girls.” In “Golden Girls 3033,” a pilot made to elicit a series order, Hollingsworth reimagines Susan Harris’ beloved sitcom with animation, relying on the original scripts and audio as a jumping off point before shaping fresh episodes for a story set more than 1,000 years in the future. Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Dorothy (Bea Arthur), Rose (Betty White), and Sophia (Estelle Getty) all still share a house in Miami — but it’s the year 3033, they’ve discovered the Fountain of Youth,...

Ready to get back with your friends, your pals, your confidantes? May 9 marks 30 years since NBC’s The Golden Girls ended its Emmy-winning, seven-season run, so it’s high time to revisit the gals. The Emmy-winning sitcom centered on the eponymous friends — the sarcastic Dorothy (Bea Arthur); her mother, the straight-talking Sophia (Estelle Getty); the naïve Rose (Betty White); and the flirtatious Blanche (Rue McClanahan) — as they bickered and bonded in the Miami home they all shared. Here are IMDb users’ picks for the best episodes of the series — with quotes from the users who love them. Season 6, Episode 9: “Mrs. George Deveraux” As Blanche comes face to face with her previously dead, suddenly resurrected husband, Dorothy finds herself in a love triangle with singer Sonny Bono and actor Lyle Wagonner. “Battles over who will win Dorothy’s heart are hysterical,” ...

If you put your ear to the ground, you can hear it coming. Somewhere, beneath the thunderous hoofbeats of the end of the Oscar race, there is a thrum. “The Emmys are coming,” the thrum says. “Hold on to your butts.”
Setting aside the absolute pandemonium pending in both the drama series — Yes, “Succession,” yes, “Squid Game,” but also “Severance,” “Yellowstone,” “Yellowjackets,” and “Euphoria” just to name a few — and comedy series — “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Atlanta,” “Barry,” and “Russian Doll” all return, not to mention second seasons of “Ted Lasso” and “Hacks — races, we’re on track to see some wild shot-calling when it comes to which categories actors wind up competing in.

"The Golden Girls" aired its pilot episode in the fall of 1985 and raked in 44 million viewers. An instant classic, the sitcom followed the lives of four older women — Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Rose Nylund (Betty White), and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) — and how they cope with aging, dating, and living together. With a sharp comedic sensibility, the show ran seven seasons and frequently addressed major social issues, including racism, body image, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Don Cheadle remembered his The Golden Palace costar Betty White after her death at the age of 99 on New Year’s Eve. The pair collaborated on the Golden Girls spinoff series which ran for one season from 1992-1993.
“betty was the best of the best,” he shared via Twitter. “when we were shooting scenes together it was difficult for the Dp to get the lighting right between my chocolate and betty’s white! she was either a ghost or i was the shadow. i came on set one day and betty had darkened her make up/hair a bit in an attempt to accommodate for it.”
He continued, “nobody asked her to do it. and that’s just one small example of her overflowing generosity. my dogs thank her too. she gave us our veterinarian reco who we still see to this day. she was the goldenest of them all and will be forever missed.

Stories about the making of "The Golden Girls" get bandied around as often as Sophia's (Estelle Getty) tall tales about her youth in Sicily. It makes sense: one of the major joys of the warm-hearted sitcom was watching its four roommates entertain each other through storytelling, so of course fans would be preoccupied with the behind-the-scenes stories that made "The Golden Girls" great. The recent passing of star Betty White makes these familiar stories feel even more like a balm to the soul than usual.

Betty White had a mischievous side, and she loved to have fun and crack jokes on the set of “The Golden Girls.” But there were times when she was all business.
Those times were often on Monday mornings. In the early years of the NBC comedy, White, the legendary performer who died this week at the age of 99, would often sit with “Golden Girls” executive producer Tony Thomas and dig into the overnight ratings for the hit sitcom that aired in Saturday time slots for the entirety of its 1985-1992 run.
“When I think of Betty, I think of fun,” Thomas told Variety. “She liked to have a good time at work. We laughed a lot. She was just the best.”

How do you say goodbye to a legend?
It's the last day of another less-than-stellar year, and now it's stolen Betty White, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday.
Betty had big plans for her big day, but now her living celebration will be a tribute instead.
For those of us lucky enough to have grown up in the 1970s, we fell in love with Betty approximately 30 years into her career.
At the time she got her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1973, she had been in the business for just under 30 years with just 11 projects under her belt.
As Sue Ann Nivens, Betty showcased her impeccable comedic timing and proved that a gorgeous woman with a little nasty in her could steal the show.
After The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Betty had a short-lived series titled The Betty White Show and recurring roles on shows like The Love Boat...

Picture it, Miami. 1992.
The Golden Palace, a 90s spin-off series of The Golden Girls, will stream exclusively via Hulu starting Jan. 10. The streamer is releasing Palace in celebration of franchise star Betty White’s 100th birthday just 7 days later.
Though it only ran for one season, The Golden Palace is a treasured follow-up of the original series that has mostly been unavailable to stream. It’s set after the events of the Golden Girls series finale that saw Bea Arthur’s departure as Dorothy Zbornak after marrying Blanche’s (Rue McClanahan) uncle Lucas (Leslie Nielson).
The new series reunited White’s Rose Nylund with Dorothy’s mother Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty), and Blanche as they’re amid mayhem while moving out of the Miami residence they shared for the titular Art Deco hotel in South Beach they invested in and would manage. Last Year’s Winner: Catherine O’Hara, “Schitt’s Creek”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: It may seem like only yesterday, but it’s been four years now since Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her sixth straight Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, all of which were bestowed for her work on “Veep.” Since then, three different actors have won — Rachel Brosnahan for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Phoebe Waller-Bridge for “Fleabag,” and Catherine O’Hara for “Schitt’s Creek.” With O’Hara ineligible in 2021, there will be a new victor for the fourth consecutive Emmy season.
Fun Fact: Of the 15 TV shows to win multiple times in the Best Actress in a Comedy category, only three crowned more than one performer: Shelly Long and Kirstie Alley both won for “Cheers,” Ruth Gordon and Carol Kane won for “Taxi,” and three of the “Golden Girls” took home the Lead Actress trophy: Betty White,...
