The Venice Film Festival will fete Australian director and screenwriter Peter Weir with its honorary Golden Lion at its forthcoming 80th edition.
Accepting the honor, Weir said: “The Venice Film Festival and its Golden Lion are part of the folklore of our craft. To be singled out as a recipient for a lifetime’s work as a director is a considerable honor.”
Born in August 1944, Weir was one of the pivotal figures in the Australian New Wave cinema of the 70s. He began his career in 1969 when he took a job with the government-funded Commonwealth Film Unit as a director. Weir struck out on his own in 1973 and directed his first feature film, the comic-horror The Cars That Ate Paris (1974), which he also wrote. He won an international audience with Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), followed by The Last Wave (1977), for which he also co-wrote the screenplay.

It was not common for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to dive into television-based content before Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Joss Whedon had a part to play in it. Stemming from the first Avengers movie, the show was an idea no one had explored before. It laid the foundation of what the franchise could do outside of just the big screen and its success was the hope that no one knew they really needed.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Whedon may not be getting much attention as of late, but there is a lot that he contributed to the making of the series. He may be given most of the credit for the show, but his brother and his sister-in-law had a part to play in it too, bigger than him even.

It may be a mystery to famed director David Lynch that Patrick Stewart was an acclaimed actor when the latter showed up on the set of his 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Well, sometimes directors have a clear vision of the ideal actor for a role, while other times, a happy accident can result in unexpected greatness. Such was the case with Lynch’s original 1984 Dune adaptation, in which he erroneously cast Patrick Stewart in a role that was meant for someone else.
Yes, Stewart, 83, inadvertently obtained the role of Gurney Halleck. In the process of replacing Aldo Ray at the eleventh hour, the director erroneously cast another Patrick Stewart.
David Lynch’s Dune 1984
Aside from being a financial disaster and receiving negative reviews, the film has developed a cult following over the years, and this intriguing casting mishap is just one of the many oddball tales surrounding its creation.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about lotsa shows including Ghosts, Ripley, S.W.A.T. and Law & Order: Organized Crime!

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

NCIS has been part of the television landscape for the past two decades.
Following a two-episode backdoor pilot on Jag in 2003, the redundantly named Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service debuted in the fall of that year.
Although it started slowly ratings-wise in its first couple of seasons, a franchise soon was born.
Now in its 21st season, NCIS has produced more than 450 episodes and six spinoff series, a record unmatched in TV history (although Law & Order fans doubtless will quibble).
Maybe now, shortly after the series said goodbye to its second-most popular character on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2, would be a good time for a hiatus.
That's insane, you say, what with two new spinoffs in the pipeline.
Look back fondly

In 2020 – for the first time in seven years – the Best Supporting Actress Oscar category saw a lone nomination, meaning that a film was recognized there and nowhere else. This achievement is attributed to Kathy Bates (“Richard Jewell”), who competed for no major precursors except the Golden Globe but still managed to bump Critics Choice, SAG, and Globe nominee Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”). Perhaps unsurprisingly given the length of the streak she broke, there has yet to be a lone contender in any of her category’s subsequent lineups.
Since the introduction of the two gendered supporting Oscars in 1937, there have been 57 female lone nominees and 54 male ones, with over half of the entrants on the former roster having been added before 1977. The one who directly preceded Bates was Helen Hunt, whose inclusion in her lineup was much more heavily predicted. Coincidentally, both women had the perceived advantage of being former Best Actress champions,...

One of the most beloved movies of 1983 is “The Big Chill,” starring Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, William Hurt and Meg Tilly. Written by Lawrence Kasdan and Barbara Benedek and directed by Kasdan, the film is an ensemble comedy-drama about a group of former college friends who reunite for a weekend after one of their college friends dies. Released 40 years ago on September 28, 1983, “The Big Chill” did well at the box office, making $56 million worldwide on a budget of just $8 million. The movie marked another financial triumph for director Kasdan, whose feature debut two years earlier, “Body Heat,” did well at the box office and with critics. Read on as Gold Derby celebrates “The Big Chill” 40th anniversary.

It always bothers me when Joss Whedon is referred to as being the chief creative force behind "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," and not just because of everything that's come out about his workplace misconduct and toxic behavior since 2017. While he did, in fact, develop the Marvel Television show with his brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen, it was the latter duo who sculpted the series into one of the best projects to emerge from the House of Ideas since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began its industry-changing run.
Of course, circa 2012, "Joss is Boss" was a tenant among Joss Whedon fans. Having already created the fan-favorite series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and cult space Western show "Firefly," the multi-hyphenate only fortified his genre credentials that year by helming the McU's hugely popular "The Avengers." That basically gave Whedon carte blanche to do whatever he wanted in the Marvel universe, which included...

With six Oscar nominations under his belt, Australian-born director Peter Weir has firmly established himself as one of our most respected filmmakers thanks to a number of visually striking, narratively ambitious movies. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 13 of his movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1944, Weir helped usher in the Australian New Wave of cinema with “Picnic at Hanging Rock” (1975), “The Last Wave” (1977), “Gallipoli” (1981) and “The Year of Living Dangerously” (1983). He brought his unique brand of filmmaking to Hollywood with the romantic mystery “Witness” (1985), which brought him his first Oscar nomination for Best Director. He earned a subsequent bid in the category for the inspirational teacher drama “Dead Poets Society” (1989), competing once again for the media satire “The Truman Show” (1998) and the swashbuckling epic “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), for which he also contended in Best Picture.

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard went out with a bang this year, reuniting the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and delivering a compelling conclusion to a story that started 37 years ago. Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden and Jonathan Frakes reflect on their earliest days, and describe the emotion they felt as they stepped back onto the bridge of the USS Enterprise.
Deadline: Do you remember your first meeting with one another, way back in 1986?
Jonathan Frakes: I do remember the first time I met Patrick. We’d been called into the makeup trailer to meet the great king of makeup, Michael Westmore. Patrick and I introduced ourselves to one another, and we got right into a cricket versus baseball conversation that eventually led to him becoming a big LA Dodgers fan [laughs].

The last episode before the two-part series finale for NCIS: Los Angeles featured Callen (Chris O’Donnell) getting a file on his life — and learning just how he and Sam (LL Cool J) ended up as partners. (And thankfully they did! Could you imagine the show without their banter? We can’t either.) In “The Reckoning,” Callen came face-to-face with Pembrook (Jere Burns), who had been part of the spy program he’d unwittingly been entered into as a kid. And in their last meeting of the episode, during which he got that aforementioned file, Callen also heard more about Hetty’s (Linda Hunt) role in his part in (and out of) it. She’d pulled him out of the program because she “was consumed with guilt” for putting him in it, wanting him to fulfill his potential. “That world was all she knew. It’s all she had to offer you,...

NCIS: Los Angeles ended its 14-season run on CBS with a finale all about “New Beginnings” (hence the title), and while it was a mostly happy ending, everything wasn’t tied up neatly with a bow. For example, yes, Callen (Chris O’Donnell) has learned quite a bit about himself over the years and did marry Anna (Bar Paly). Yes, Callen and Sam (LL Cool J) went to Morocco to join Nell’s (Renée Felice Smith) team in a mission to rescue Hetty (Linda Hunt), and we can assume that will be successful (especially with LL Cool J recurring on Hawai’i in Season 3). We know that Kensi (Daniela Ruah) and Deeks’ (Eric Christian Olsen) family will soon be one of four, with her pregnant. But what about the storylines that weren’t wrapped up or the callbacks we didn’t get (like we did with Switch and Mr. Carl? “We...

This article contains spoilers for the “NCIS: Los Angeles” series finale.
“NCIS: Los Angeles” showrunner R. Scott Gemmill’s goal with the series finale on Sunday, May 21 was to give the characters of the long-running CBS procedural as happy an ending as possible.
“It really was about trying to find a way to wrap up the series that would leave the fans feeling hopeful for the future of all our characters. And so we gave everyone what we figured was their version of happily ever after… at least for the time being,” he told TheWrap in a recent interview.
To that end, in the final episode, Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Anna (Bar Paly) tie the knot in an impromptu ceremony attended by the rest of the team — except for Hetty (Linda Hunt), who sends a congratulatory note.

It's traditional for a series finale to, you know, wrap up things.
NCIS: Los Angeles Season 14 Episode 21 took a much different approach in its conclusion.
Callen and Anna's storyline took its next natural step, which was the highlight of the finale. Beyond that, almost every other storyline was left hanging.
The only way this makes any sense is if CBS announces the latest NCIS spinoff this week.
The only other possibility was that producers didn't get word of cancellation in time to rearrange the final season adequately. That doesn't seem likely, as cancellation has been possible for the past few years.
Before anything else could happen, the team had to wrap up its current gunrunning case as quickly as possible to allow time to address all the personal storylines (or so we thought).
Sam and Callen rather expeditiously got out of their threatening situation unscathed, although the Challenger wasn't nearly as fortunate.

A retrospective of “NCIS: Los Angeles”‘s 14 seasons will air after the series finale on Sunday, May 21 on CBS, the network announced on Friday. The special, which will be hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier, will also be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.
Showrunner and executive producer R. Scott Gemmill thanked the network for giving him “an extra episode” to wrap up the show, which debuted on Sept. 22, 2009.
“Wrapping up a series is always bittersweet. We were blessed to have 14 seasons together, so bringing it to a satisfying end was extremely challenging after so many years. Fortunately, CBS was gracious enough to give us an extra episode in order to send off our characters in a way befitting their stories that hopefully the fans find both satisfying and hopeful,” Gemmill said.

Fans of NCIS: Los Angeles will have to wait a little longer for the series finale of the hit CBS series, but there's some good news.
According to Parade, the series-ender has been shifted to Sunday, May 21, 2023.
The good news is that it has been expanded to a two-hour event, which is far more exciting for a show ending after 14 seasons.
Saying goodbye will be difficult, but a proper ending has been crafted thanks to the show getting a heads up about NCIS: Los Angeles Season 14 being the last season.
Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill opened up about the difficult task of ending the arcs for the characters.
He acknowledged a satisfying ending is tough "because there's so much expectation, and how do you live up to that?"
Gemmill said that the best foot forward was to focus on the characters one-by-one and examine how to put them in a happy place in their lives.

NCIS: Los Angeles fans will have to wait an extra week for the series finale — the two-parter will now conclude on Sunday, May 21 — but if it’s any consolation, it seems poised to leave you in a happy place.
Speaking with Parade.com at the series finale wrap party on Friday night, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill acknowledged that because the high-octane CBS procedural has run for 14 seasons, “the more difficult it is” to craft a satisfying ending, “because there’s so much expectation, and how do you live up to that?”

For every actor that wins multiple Oscars, there are others who, no matter how much they put into their roles and how much campaigning they do, just can’t make the conversion into winning their first Academy Award.
More often than not, it’s just a matter of bad timing, like being nominated for an Oscar in the same year as one of the four actors mentioned above. Peter Weir's "Witness" was a sleeper hit when it arrived in U.S. theaters on February 8, 1985. Back then, the first two months of the moviegoing calendar were dominated by the previous year's holiday season blockbusters and Academy Awards contenders, many of which were expanding from limited release. In 1985, this modestly budgeted crime thriller about a streetwise Philadelphia detective hiding out in a Pennsylvania Amish community was up against the box office juggernaut of "Beverly Hills Cop" and the critically acclaimed duo of "The Killing Fields" and "A Passage to India." The timing of the release indicated a lack of confidence on the part of the studio, especially since Weir's previous movie, "The Year of Living Dangerously," had been a major awards contender (with Linda Hunt winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a Chinese-American man).

The series premiered in 2009 as the second installation of the “NCIS” franchise, preceded by the still-running “NCIS” and followed by “NCIS: New Orleans,” which ran from 2014 to 2021, and “NCIS: Hawaiʻi,” which premiered in 2021 and is currently airing its second season. “NCIS: Sydney” is set to premiere this year.
Set in the high-stakes world of a division of NCIS that is charged with apprehending dangerous and elusive criminals who pose a threat to the nation’s security, “NCIS: Los Angeles” follows Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), Grisha Callen and their team as they go undercover to take down their targets and protect national interests. Linda Hunt, Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen, Medalion Rahimi, Caleb Castille and Gerald McRaney also star.

One of CBS’ longest-running scripted shows, NCIS: Los Angeles, will be coming to an end after 322 episodes. Its current 14th season will be the show’s last, with the series finale set for May 14, airing on the network and streaming live and on demand on Paramount+.
The NCIS spinoff, starring LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell, is tied as the fifth longest-running CBS primetime scripted series ever, only behind Gunsmoke, Lassie, CSI and Criminal Minds. Among the four, the two shows that have aired in the last 50 years, CSI and Criminal Minds, both have since been revived, which bodes well for NCIS: Los Angeles‘ future.
Additionally, NCIS: Los Angeles is a rare long-running procedural drama to have had its original leads, LL Cool J and O’Donnell, stay on for the entire run. Both have spoken publicly about their commitment to the series, which hit the 300 episode milestone last May, and their fellow cast members.

What's the most common question that runs through the mind of a TV viewer?
One would certainly be, "How is that still on the air?"
It's certainly understandable that a viewer might be confused, what with the TV and streaming landscapes awash with revivals and reboots.
It's equally understandable why TV executives would opt for the fading ratings of shows that are shadows of their former selves rather than take a chance on an unknown new series that may not strike a spark for viewers.
Everybody is aggrieved by one such show. Here are those shows considered the worst that somehow gained renewals by TV Fanatic staffers:
The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power (Amazon Prime)
The show had a two-season order before it premiered, but that was a bad idea. Despite starting off strong with beautiful scenery and a great premiere, somewhere in there, the show became a convoluted mess.

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we take a look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
Without question, the biggest living Oscars bridesmaid on the acting side is Glenn Close. She made her film debut 40 years ago this year with "The World According to Garp," which earned her a Best Supporting Actress nom right out of the gate. Over the course of her career, she has been nominated for eight Academy Awards and has never emerged victorious. She ties Peter O'Toole as the most nominated actor who hasn't won, and since O'Toole is no longer with us, Close very well could take that mantle for herself if she keeps working, getting nominated, and not winning.
Every time a new Glenn Close project gets announced, the Oscar buzz immediately starts, with all of us wondering, "Will this finally be her year?...

There are some Oscar recipients who don’t have to sweat the big night — they already know they are receiving honorary statuettes at this year’s Governors Awards, which will be held Nov. 19 in Los Angeles.
Michael J. Fox
Five-time Emmy Award winner Fox will be honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, an Oscar statuette given “to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.” In addition to starring in box office classics like the “Back to the Future” series, Fox has worked with some of the best directors in the business, including Peter Jackson (“The Frighteners”) and Rob Reiner (“The American President”) in a wide range of genres. In 2000, he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. He is also the subject of an upcoming documentary from Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim for Apple Original Films.
