For some fans, the arc of X-Men as mutant outsiders fighting for their right to fit in, be represented, or at best, to co-exist beside humans, feels more real than the world they live in. As such, Professor Xavierʼs never-ending struggle to mediate, guide, lead, train, shelter, and sometimes pioneer the war against injustice and suffering also resonates among fans who see themselves as outsiders.

In Charles Xavier, the Billy Jean singer saw himself while the rest of the world associated themselves with the remainder of the X-Men.

It is inherently foolish to disregard the iconography of Michael Jackson in modern pop culture and music.

To most, Madonna‘s Like a Virgin was a fun slice of dance music. On the other hand, her father found it mortifying. He wasn’t any happier when pictures of his daughter appeared in Playboy. The “Express Yourself” singer once released a ballad about her father, and the picture it paints is not flattering.
Madonna’s father didn’t want to talk about ‘Like a Virgin’
During a 1991 interview with Rolling Stone, Madonna was asked about how her father, Silvio Anthony “Tony” Ciccone, reacted to a risque performance from her film Madonna: Truth or Dare. She avoided the question. “I don’t know if he’s seen all the other things I’ve done,” she said. “I’m sure when the nude pictures in Playboy and the album Like a Virgin came out, he went through a period of extreme shock.” While tame today, nude pictures and Like a...

Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list today named its top 10 albums of all-time, with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill crowned No. 1.
“This is my award,” Hill said to Apple Music, “but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”
Last year was the album’s 25th anniversary, and its success was overwhelming upon release. It won five Grammys, three American Music Awards, and a Billboard, Soul Train and MTV Video Music Award while selling 30 million copies since its bow.
But instead of capitalizing on it, Hill became one of music’s biggest enigmas. Her output diminished after an MTV Unplugged follow-up acoustic album, reverting to sporadic singles and rare appearances.

Apple Music named its top 10 albums of all time and it focused entirely on popular music. While some older records showed up on the list, the top spot was taken by Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Hill herself reacted to this ranking.
Lauryn Hill wouldn’t have made Apple Music’s top 10 albums without ‘sacrifice’
In 2024, Apple Music named The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill the greatest album ever. It beat out several other classics. The rest of the top 10 were, in ascending order, Beyoncé’s Lemonade, Nirvana’s Nevermind, Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, Frank Ocean’s Blonde, Prince and the Revolution’s Purple Rain, The Beatles’ Abbey Road, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Over the past week or so, Apple Music has slowly unveiled the titles included in its list of the “100 best albums.” Today, the top 10 albums were revealed, with Miss Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill claiming the No. 1 spot. The premise that makes up the plot of Wesley Snipesʼ Blade trilogy is an undisputed winner among all pop culture genres. Vampires and vampire hunters have been a fascination since the days of Bram Stokerʼs Dracula and it is no wonder that every other supernatural lore and mythology deals with the bloodsucking creatures of the night.

When artists are compared to The Beatles, it’s usually meant as a compliment. However, Michael Jackson was upset when someone said The Jackson 5 were “the Black Beatles.” He had a point! On top of that, The Beatles and The Jackson 5 left behind very different legacies.
The Beatles and The Jackson 5 both inspired Saturday morning cartoons
Jermaine Jackson was a member of The Jackson 5. In his 2011 book You Are Not Alone: Michael, Through a Brother’s Eyes, Jermaine revealed that Motown had Fred Rice, the same marketing genius who helped The Beatles take over the world, merchandise The Jackson 5. The group inspired toys, clothing, and hair care products.
“He even started talking to New York animators Rankin/Bass, the makers of ABC’s The King Kong Show, about turning us into cartoon characters,” Jermaine wrote. “‘I’m going to have your faces everywhere,’ he said. ‘You’re the Black Beatles.

Boy band songs aren’t the most widely respected examples of popular music. Regardless, Michael Jackson’s boy band, The Jackson 5, gave us some of the best pop songs of all time. Rolling Stone named a Jackson 5 tune the best boy band song ever. Here’s a look at what the magazine had to say about it.
Rolling Stone praised boy band songs by The Jackson 5, One Direction, and others
Back in the day, boy bands were often dismissed as frivolous music for young girls. Critics usually had similar opinions about pop music as a whole. A new movement in the press called “poptimism” changed many hearts and minds, and now the latest boy band release will inspire just as much analysis as the latest Boy Genius album.

Brad Pitt is known for his work in an array of genres, that cemented him among the high-profile Hollywood actors. Among his projects, his 1995 crime thriller, Se7en remains a highly acclaimed work that catapulted the actor to more serious, dramatic roles. While the entire project continued to give off spooky vibes, one cannot help but agree that the unseen movie ending remains one of the most unsettling sequences.

The film director, David Fincher wanted to elevate the gore element in the last sequence but the actor meddled to keep things just like what we witnessed in the final cut. He even added a certain clause before signing the project to keep Fincher from making any changes later in the movie.

We all agree that Michael Jackson is known for his enduring dance moves and infectious dance-pop songs, but one of his most poignant ballads, She’s Out of My Life, has a special place in his discography. This heartfelt song, produced by Quincy Jones, highlights Jackson’s emotional depth and vulnerability.
Written by veteran songwriter Tom Bahler, the song was released as the fourth single from Jackson’s 1979 album Off the Wall. Though the album gave the world, many upbeat songs, it also produced a breakup song (She’s Out of My Life) that made Jackson cry every time he tried to sing it.

Madonna and Marilyn Monroe would be compared to each other no matter what, simply because they are two of the biggest female celebrities ever. On the other hand, some fans claim that the similarity between the Material Girl and the Some Like It Hot star goes deeper than that. Madonna’s brother, Christopher Ciccone, had a different take on the situation.
Madonna’s brother said she’s not ‘self-destructive’ like Marilyn Monroe
Monroe’s influence can be seen throughout Madonna’s career. The “Like a Virgin” singer based her video for “Material Girl” on a scene from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, one of Monroe’s most famous films. Monroe is also one of several Hollywood stars mentioned in the lyrics of “Vogue.” The cover of Madonna’s greatest hits album Celebration is also based on Monroe, and the singer appropriated a famous sequence from The Seven Year Itch for her “Give Me All Your Luvin'” clip.

Born to an African-American household, during the late ’80s, the world saw a drastic shift in Michael Jackson’s skin color, as it grew exponentially lighter. While many at the time accused the King of Pop of bleaching his skin in order to become white, this doesn’t seem to be the case, as his son Prince Jackson opened up about his father’s condition.
Reflecting on his father’s change in complexion in the latter stages of his life, Jackson recalled the singer’s battle with vitiligo, revealing that the pop star became insecure about his skin.

Earlier this month, Trev Lukather and Nic Collins’ new band the Effect released their version of Journey’s 1986 deep cut “It Could Have Been You” — featuring new vocals by Steve Perry. When Rolling Stone hopped on Zoom to hear how the song came together, Perry told us that he has other projects in the works.
“I just signed with a new label,” Perry says. “I’m very excited about it, and I’ll have an opportunity very soon to work with these very, very musically creative people. I’ll probably...

Larissa Lima looks like an entirely different person since she last appeared on 90 Day Fiance, and critics are taking notice.
The Brazilian native made quite the splash when she appeared during Season 6 of 90 Day Fiance alongside her then-husband, Colt Johnson.
Larissa’s heated temper, multiple arrests, and infamous one-liner – “Who is against the queen will die!” – added to her dramatic storyline on reality TV.
Since then, Larissa has spent quite a bit of time and money altering her appearance.
Larissa has gone to great lengths to achieve her physique, getting liposuction, filler injections, Botox injections, multiple breast augmentations, a botched abdominoplasty, and even had several ribs removed to shrink her waistline.
Amid all of the elective procedures Larissa has undergone, she’s become nearly unrecognizable compared to the 90 Day Fiance personality we met in 2018 on TLC.

When you think of Michael Jackson, your thoughts probably go to his iconic songs, groundbreaking dance moves, and legendary persona. But when it came to endorsements, did you know that he also had astute business sense?
Also, did you know that the King of Pop wasn’t one for the limelight of sponsorship deals? Surprising as it may seem, when it came to his historic partnership with PepsiCo, his altruism shone as brightly as his talent. He agreed to the collaboration primarily for his family…how loving the late music icon-philanthropist was.

Yet he had stipulations that highlighted his distinctive style: Jackson insisted he wouldn’t be caught on screen clutching a Pepsi can and that his face would grace the frame for no more than a brief “three-second” flash.

Michael Jackson wasn’t just one of the music industry’s most successful artists. He was also interested in pursuing an acting career as well. He was especially intrigued by playing the character Peter Pan, so much so that he begged for the role at one point.

Jackson had an unfulfilled dream of being an actor. But his acting ability wasn’t completely untested. Will Smith starred as Agent J in the sci-fi film franchise Men in Black. Based on the popular comics of the same name, the original trilogy was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and was executive-produced by Steven Spielberg. Smith starred along with Tommy Lee Jones in the lead roles in all three films, and it proved to be one of the actor’s breakout roles.
Despite the original film being a huge commercial success and developing a fanbase, the sequels have been regarded as unworthy successors and have been accused of being cash grabs. Filmmaker Sonnenfeld was also reportedly under such extreme pressure to deliver a commercial hit that he almost got a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital.

The past year saw a glut of biopics, and there are many more to come.
On the horizon are movies about Bob Dylan (A Complete Unknown with Timothee Chalamet), Michael Jackson (Michael with Jaafar Jackson), Shirley Chisolm (Shirley with Regina King), and many others.
Biographical pictures can be a vehicle to introduce a star from the past to the younger set, a la Elvis and then Priscilla. Or to bring a lesser-known historical figure like Oppenheimer to the forefront of our consciousness.
Other times, rather than being educational, a biopic can sensationalize a tragedy or scandal, which could leave a bad taste in the mouths of fans. This was the case with the Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson miniseries.
Biopics are not a new genre for Hollywood. They are part of the ebb and flow of popularity. The vehicle is always around, sometimes as a small interest piece and, every now and then,...

The music from Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism sounds very modern. Despite this, one of the album’s creators explained how Motown songs inspired it. He picked out one Smokey Robinson tune in particular as a model for the songs on Dua Lipa’s newest record. Notably, Robinson said he had a lot to say about his legacy as a musicians.
A producer compared Dua Lipa’s ‘Radical Optimism’ to a Smokey Robinson song
Lipa is a high-tech, modern pop star. Her music is filled with synthesizers and the latest genre trends. However, even the most forward-thinking pop stars can look to the past for inspiration. The classic hits of Motown inspired the construction of songs from Lipa’s Radical Optimism if not its sonic palette.
Danny L Harle is one of the producers of Radical Optimism. During a 2024 interview with Grammy.com, Harle discussed one of the concepts behind the album.

Bruce Springsteen, “The Boss,” is one of the best rock singers in history. A pioneer of rock music, Springsteen has contributed to several subgenres of rock, with his music and his lyrics portraying the life and troubles of the “common people” in the United States. And while his music is undoubtedly majestic, his lyrics generally had a social note that made him stand out among the tough competition in the rock music market. Now, when Hollywood is actually making a lot of musical biopics, the time has come to make a film about Bruce Springsteen as well, and we already have some interesting casting updates.
The movie is going to be titled Deliver Me From Nowhere and will actually focus on the process of making Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska, which means that it will portray both the musician and his longtime manager, Jon Landau.

Everyone has their own idea of what constitutes religious music. Madonna’s “Holiday” probably wouldn’t make the cut for most people. Despite this, two musicians have claimed that the song was an act of God. You don’t get much more religious than that.
1 of the writers of Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ said every songwriter receives a song from God
“Holiday” was co-written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens. During a 2012 interview with Blogcritics, Hudson had an interesting explanation of the song’s origins. “There are certain songs that God gives you as a writer,” he said. “‘Holiday’ was a gift. From our hard work out of the hundreds of songs we worked on, he looked down and said, ‘I’m gonna bless you with this song.’ I think that happens to all writers at some point.”
Stevens had a similar view of the track. “We always felt like it...

The best music videos take inspiration from unexpected places. For example, Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” video was partly inspired by iconic model Naomi Campbell. Lipa saw a deeper meaning in one of Campbell’s advertising campaigns and she incorporated some of its imagery into the “New Rules” clip. Lipa’s choreographer revealed how “New Rules” was meant to empower women.
Dua Lipa felt a Naomi Campbell ad showed female strength
What makes the “New Rules” clip so fascinating is its choreography. The music video depicts Lipa surrounded by female friends. Through a choreographed dance routine, Lipa’s friends prevent her from returning to a bad ex-boyfriend. In a music landscape where fewer and fewer superstars know how to dance well, the “Hotter than Hell” singer did a routine on a par with Michael Jackson at his best.
During a 2019 interview with The Cut, the “Cold Heart” singer discussed the idea behind “New Rules.

Pop music history is filled with roads not take. Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” could have been recorded by one of many other artists. The musical geniuses who wrote the track revealed what they thought of Madonna’s take on “Like a Virgin” and why they believed in the song when nobody else did.
Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ has an interesting connection to Whitney Houston
While “Like a Virgin” is one of Madonna’s defining songs, she had no role in writing it. Instead, the track was co-written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. The songwriting duo also penned classic hits such as “So Emotional,” Divinyl’s “I Touch Myself,” and “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. During an interview with Songwriter Universe, the songwriters revealed that many artists turned down “Like a Virgin” before Madonna embraced it.

We know Kendrick Lamar and Drake will throw more shots, levy more seedy allegations, and might even drop more all-out diss songs from here. But the bulk of the war has been fought, and the crown goes to Compton. In hindsight, the way Drake poked the bear with Instagram Stories provocations and his “Taylor Made” freestyle seems masochistic. Over the past week, Lamar hit Drake with a relentless volley of diss songs that comprehensively dismantled his opponent’s character and, with “Not Like Us,” may make him the punchline of the summer.

The look Jaafar was wearing for the scene looked nearly identical to one Michael wore in 1983 at a press conference.
Fans of Michael also know that he would regularly climb on top of cars as hundreds of thousands of fans surrounded him.

After Hunter Biden’s attorneys threatened to sue Fox News for defamation, the network removed the six-part miniseries, The Trial of Hunter Biden.
Hunter’s attorneys threatened to sue Fox News for violating “revenge” laws and publishing since-debunked bribery accusations as part of a scheme to portray him inaccurately.
The letter, which President Joe Biden’s son’s counsel delivered to Fox News attorneys last week, includes a request for the network to “preserve all documents potentially relevant to the allegations in this letter” – a common precursor to litigation.

Hunter’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, has represented well-known people like Michael Jackson, Chris Brown and Winona Ryder.
Geragos demanded Fox News issue numerous retractions and corrections for reporting on Hunter’s overseas business schemes.

Renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Life of Chuck) is in talks to direct the next Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
Uni and Blumhouse declined comment. Should a deal make, Flanagan would take over the reins from David Gordon Green, who exited the rebooted franchise back in January. Universal and Blumhouse bought rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for $400M, and while the plan at that point was for at least three new films to be made, it’s unclear whether Flanagan would be on for more than one.
Starring Leslie Odom Jr. as well as franchise veteran Ellen Burstyn, trilogy launcher The Exorcist: Believer fell beneath expectations when it opened to a soft $26.4M domestic last October, going on to gross $65.5M U.S./Canada, $136.2M WW.

Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and every king has a court. It’s no surprise he worked with several other megastars across genres over the course of his life. Some of those collaborations are classic and others are tragic.
1. Justin Timberlake
“Love Never Felt So Good” is a posthumous disco duet with Justin Timberlake. It’s not as good as Jackson’s classic disco tracks but it has an infectious, cherry energy. It feels more like a prequel to Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” than anything else.
The song has some great timing. It came out in 2014. 2013 saw a huge revival of disco music with hits like Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” Bruno Mars’ “Treasure.” while it was a song from the vaults, “Love Never Felt So Good” felt practically modern! The tune appeared on the posthumous album Xscape. Xscape is not Thriller,...

Madonna‘s “Like a Virgin” is one of the most important dance songs of the 1980s. You’d think every artist would have wanted to record it! However, other artists had major issues with the track. Things went differently when the song’s writers played it for Madonna.
Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ has a major connection to Cyndi Lauper
“Like a Virgin” was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. They also co-wrote Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional,” The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame,” and “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. During an interview with SongwriterUniverse, Steinberg revealed that many singers were resistant toward “Like a Virgin.”
“We tried to place ‘Like a Virgin,’ but everyone looked at us like we were nuts,” he said. “Some people even asked us to change the title. I knew that compared to most mainstream pop lyrics, the title and theme might seem a bit jolting and risque.

One of the major themes of Kendrick Lamar’s new Drake diss “euphoria” is the accusation that his rap foe is a “scam artist” and “a master manipulator and habitual liar too.” As it turns out, the seemingly jumbled audio in the intro lays the groundwork by sampling dialogue from the 1978 film The Wiz.
Shortly after the song’s release on Tuesday, multiple fans clipped the brief sample and played the line backward, revealing it to be dialogue from the movie in which The Wiz (played by Richard Pryor) says, “Everything they say about me is true.” Scroll down for the reversed audio below.
For full context, Pryor’s line is taken from a scene in which his character is exposed to be Herman Smith, a washed-up politician from Atlantic City. Admitting to the deception, he says, “Everything they say about me is true. I’m a phony.”

While we absolutely love scripted movies and television here at /Film, we also have a deep appreciation for documentaries — series and films alike. With so many streaming services available, it feels like there are more documentaries out there than ever before, which can make finding the right one to watch a bit intimidating. Thankfully, I'm here to help recommend some of the best docs streaming this May, from remastered versions of music classics like "Stop Making Sense" and "Let it Be" to new docs with a fresh perspective, like the shocking "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" and "Stormy." There has honestly been a massive influx of showbiz docs lately, with a couple more great ones dropping fresh this month. The entertainment industry has always been rife with controversy and chaos, so there's sure to be no end of these docs anytime soon. Still, this latest crop is a real doozy.
