When it comes to sci-fi universes, Doctor Who can claim to have one of the biggest. Beyond its 60 years and counting of TV adventures, the show has three spin-off series (so far), two animated stories, one failed pilot, and a collection of licensed Doctor-less adventures, countless audios, comics, books, board games, tabletop RPGs, and that’s not including the stuff we missed which people are going to remind us about in the comments.
But there is one area where the Tardis just can’t quite seem to properly land – the world of video games.
If we look at Doctor Who’s compatriots in the Holy Triumvirate of Science Fiction Mega Franchises, Stars both Trek and Wars, this has never been as much of an issue. Star Wars was one of the first licenses to really fully embrace video games as a medium, and even if we only count the pure...

Paul McGann takes on extra business while Tara Fitzgerald brings sparkle to this low-key tale of a funeral director who gets mixed up with a local gangster
This low-key thriller, set in the late 1950s-early 60s judging by the costumes, harks back to the regional British crime flicks of that period, the sort of movies where penny-stakes gangsters and spivs in shiny suits clash over who will control the ration-card black market. Writer-director Michael Wright clearly has a yen for this milieu and takes care to get the argot right in this tale of Arthur Morel (Paul McGann), a reticent funeral director who gets mixed up with local hoodlum Finlay (Roger Barclay) in a northern town. Finlay needs a bit of help burying the excess bodies his shady business generates, or “loose ends” as he describes them.
It’s not immediately clear why Arthur agrees to take on this shady extra business,...

He goes on to explain:
“Okay, it was July, this year. But as the summer began, I was thinking about the 60th and wondered, have we done enough? So I had an idea on July 5, sent a format proposal to the team on July 20, then three scriptwriters got to work, and now, just two months later,...

As the actor stars in a new thriller, here’s your chance to ask him about Withnail, Doctor Who and Lesbian Vampire Killers
It’s funny how life works out. Luther: The Fallen Sun, the first movie adventure for Idris Elba’s morally (and fashionably) grey detective, follows up five series’ worth of shenanigans in the successful BBC TV thriller. That’s a lot of murder, character development and shocking moments. After a notably aggressive Oscars campaign by Miramax, John Madden’s romantic period comedy-drama Shakespeare in Love cleaned up at the 1999 Academy Awards, winning seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress for its lead Gwyneth Paltrow, who sobbed her way through an instantly-iconic acceptance speech in a bespoke pink Ralph Lauren dress.
But Paltrow was only cast in the role of Shakespeare’s fictional lover Viola de Lesseps after Julia Roberts exited the movie stage left, halting production for many years, and producer Ed Zwick has been revealing how that all went down in a new essay for Air Mail.
According to Zwick, it was Roberts’ attachment to the project that originally secured funding for Shakespeare in Love. “The mere possibility of having the Pretty Woman wearing a corseted gown got the studio excited enough to cough up the dough,” he wrote.

Julia Roberts may be America’s sweetheart, but that allegedly wasn’t so in Britain on the making of “Shakespeare in Love.”
“Shakespeare in Love” producer Edward Zwick penned an essay for Air Mail revisiting Roberts’ demands during the casting process for the Oscar-winning film. Roberts was up for the lead role of Viola de Lesseps, which eventually went to Gwyneth Paltrow who won Best Actress for her performance. However, Roberts’ unique approach to chemistry reads in part cost Universal upwards of $6 million at the time, Zwick claimed, before Miramax took over the film.
“The mere possibility of having the ‘Pretty Woman’ wearing a corseted gown got the studio excited enough to cough up the dough,” Zwick wrote, adding that Roberts was determined to star opposite Daniel Day-Lewis despite Day-Lewis already being committed to “In the Name of the Father” at the time.
“He’s brilliant — he’s handsome and intense.

Gwyneth Paltrow won the Oscar for best actress thanks to her role in “Shakespeare in Love,” but it was Julia Roberts who was originally courted for the role of Viola de Lesseps. Producer Edward Zwick recently published a first-person essay for Air Mail about the the making of “Shakespeare in Love.” The director behind “Glory” and “Legends of the Fall” championed the film from the beginning, coordinating with Marc Norman on the original script and getting famed playwright Tom Stoppard to come onboard to do a re-write. Zwick also bore witness to Julia Roberts joining and abandoning the project in spectacular fashion.
According to Zwick, Universal Pictures only agreed to put down money for the film when Julia Roberts expressed interest in starring in the lead role. As Zwick wrote, “The mere possibility of having the ‘Pretty Woman’ wearing a corseted gown got the studio excited enough to cough up the dough.

Even long-lapsed "Doctor Who" fans perked up their ears at the news that Russell T Davies, the showrunner who brought the series back with roaring success in 2005 and helmed it throughout the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant eras, is returning for season 14. He'll be kicking things off with three 60th anniversary specials, featuring Tennant as (somewhat confusingly) the Fourteenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as former companion Donna Noble, before embarking on a new series of adventures with the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa.
In a new interview with GQ magazine, Davies summarized his reasons for leaving "Doctor Who" in 2010 as "other things to write." Specifically, he wanted to focus on his comedy-drama series "Cucumber," which he'd been working on intermittently during his tenure as showrunner. After handing the reins over to Steven Moffatt, Davies moved to America, where he finished writing "Cucumber" and even received an offer from George Lucas...

Big Finish has announced a mega eight-part audio drama, Once and Future, to mark the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, reuniting an incredible seven former Doctors (so far!).
Once and Future stars the impressive line-up of Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, but we’re also promised ‘dozens more’ guest stars, yet to be revealed.
As if the trio of 60th Anniversary episodes next year wasn’t enough to look forward to, this announcement also means Doctor Who fans no longer have to wait until November 2023 for the 60th Anniversary fun to start, as the Once and Future audio series will begin in May 2023. The series of hour-long specials will be released monthly, with the first seven parts materialising between May and October 2023, and a final coda in November 2024.

As first revealed back in May 2022, former "Doctor Who" star David Tennant is returning to the seminal sci-fi series alongside his former companion Catherine Tate as Donna Noble as part of the show's 60th anniversary. Whovians got their first glimpse of the returning Doctor in the recent special that marked the end of Jodie Whitaker's time in the Tardis. However, Tennant's appearance in "The Power of the Doctor" wasn't exactly under the circumstances that Whovians expected to see the Tenth Doctor again. Well, I guess it's actually the Fourteenth Doctor now!
In the episode, due to reasoning that doesn't exactly make sense, the Thirteenth Doctor is forced to regenerate into the Master. During this time, when Sacha Dhawan's mad Time Lord is in control of The Doctor's body, she meets a mysterious figure in what is essentially the Ancestral Plane. Dubbed the Guardians of the Edge of Existence, this...

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers for The Power of the Doctor.
Doctor Who may be a story about a nearly-immortal alien with the ability to travel anywhere in time and space, but it has always been anchored by Earthly concerns. There’s a clear reason for this: since the show’s debut in 1963, actors and directors have long had to work within the BBC’s decidedly small budgets. Over the years, producers have admirably tried to overcome these shortcomings, with the cheap effects becoming part of the series’ charm. Even as wobbly sets and unconvincing masks gave way to dodgy CG and obvious green screen, fans thrilled to the show’s guileless imagination.
However, with Disney+ becoming the Doctor’s new non-uk home, things are about to change. Following the centenary special, “The Power of the Doctor,” the BBC announced that the adventures of incoming Doctor Ncuti Gatwa in...

Screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who wrote Doctor Who: The Movie, plunges among fans of the sci-fi series to find out what makes Time Lord diehards tick
When Matthew Jacobs’s name is first displayed on screen in this likable documentary, he is identified as a “mid-level screenwriter”; it’s more of a self-deprecating description than a diss given that he is one of the film’s co-directors (along with Vanessa Yuille) as well as the feature’s star subject. But his filmography is a mixed bag, and includes several things you may never have heard of (Bar America and the cartoon Justin and the Knights of Valour), little remembered reworkings of established works, the original story for one of Disney’s least popular works (The Emperor’s New Groove), the film adaptation for one stone-cold British cult classic, and the script for 1996’s Doctor Who: The Movie.

Quite a few Daleks, Cybermen, the Master/Rasputin, and volcanic eruptions later, the Doctor has saved the day once again in “The Power of the Doctor,” but it’s not without consequences. In one last evil act, just as the Doctor sets the Quoronx free, the Master makes sure that the Time Lord receives a fatal dose of energy from the space jellyfish, triggering her next, life-altering regeneration.
We all knew this was coming, as the BBC Centenary Special was always meant to be Jodie Whittaker‘s final adventure in the Tardis. Her inevitable demise at the end of the episode was designed to make way for the next Doctor. And indeed, the final minutes of the special play out exactly how we all expected…mostly. Jodie Whittaker’s final episode of Doctor Who featured surprise cameos from a number of the show’s former stars.
The Broadchurch actor bowed out as the Doctor during Sunday night’s special “The Power of the Doctor”. You can read The Independent’s review of the episode here.
In the episode, Whittaker’s Doctor faces off against her nemesis The Master (Sacha Dhawan) once again, who has brought the Daleks and Cybermen together to defeat the Doctor.
The Master makes the Doctor take part in a “forced regeneration”, in which he regenerates into her body and is able to control the Tardis.
On the brink of her own death, Whittaker finds herself in a deserted liminal space, where she is greeted by a man in black and red robes.

Warning: Contains spoilers for the latest episode of “Doctor Who”
“Can somebody tell me what the hell is going on?” says incoming “Doctor Who” star Ncuti Gatwa in a trailer for next year’s series premiere. After seeing “The Power of the Doctor,” it would be hard to find any “Who” fan who doesn’t feel the same way.
Airing on the BBC on Sunday, “The Power of the Doctor” was advertised as a sendoff for the Thirteenth Doctor, Jodie Whitaker, after four years in the role. But with the special also airing as part of the BBC’s 100th anniversary celebrations, it also was overloaded with cameos from past Doctors and companions.
As advertised, we got Sophie Aldred and Janet Fielding returning as 80s “Who” companions Ace and Tegan, but we also got cameos from four previous Doctors. Doctors No. Five through Eight — Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy...

Warning: contains spoilers for Luther series 1-5
It’s been nearly four years since London’s most morally dubious detective, Dci John Luther, last graced our screens. In January 2019, the fifth series of the BBC’s gritty crime drama premiered to much fanfare, with decent reviews and ratings success paving the way for a long-awaited, feature-length mystery for Idris Elba’s grizzled antihero.
Since then, details of the Luther movie have been mainly classified, with only a few tidbits escaping. There’s not even a concrete release date yet.
What we do know is that the film is a co-production between BBC Films and Netflix—the two are reportedly splitting distribution between the UK (BBC) and the rest of the world (Netflix)—which means one thing: a bigger budget. That gives series creator and screenwriter Neil Cross and returning series five director Jamie Payne a much bigger canvas to work on.

The title of Jodie Whittaker’s swan song as the Doctor has been announced: ‘The Power of the Doctor’. Presumably it will line events up for Russell T Davies’ 60th anniversary specials, ‘Remembrance of the Doctor’, ‘Resurrection of the Doctor’, ‘The Doctor’s Master Plan’ and, of course, ‘The Doctor Invasion of Earth’.
It is a story that will be many things – it will reintroduce Ace and Tegan (and potentially play merry Hell with canon as it does so), it will conclude the tenures of both the Thirteenth Doctor and Chris Chibnall, wrap up the Thasmin romance arc (our money’s on ‘It ends tragically’) and conclude whatever Dan’s arc is. Some are still holding onto an outlying chance that it might end the universe. People are going to have strong opinions about it, many ones that you can probably guess in advance.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I’ll watch any good documentary even if I am not interested in the subject matter. Which leads me to see this documentary on the writer of the 1996 Doctor Who movie, Doctor Who Am I. It’s not that I’ve never seen Doctor Who, or that I dislike it at all. I’m just not that bothered by it. I’ve watched it every now and then throughout my life and it’s usually fine but I’ve never stuck with it. But, after a quick read of this movie’s synopsis I was certain I would enjoy it.

Award-winning Doctor Who doc “Doctor Who Am I” has been snapped up by Kaleidoscope Film Distribution, Variety can exclusively reveal.
Kaleidoscope are set to release “Doctor Who Am I” theatrically in the U.K. in October and are also repping international sales. Materials will be available to view at TIFF next month.
Marking Vanessa Yuille directorial debut, the documentary feature tells the story of the infamous 1996 “Doctor Who” TV film, which was produced during a gap in the TV series. It featured Paul McGann as the Time Lord but received disapprobation from fans, who were apparently unhappy at the suggestion the Doctor was half human, especially when he kissed his assistant Grace Holloway.
Matthew Jacobs wrote the standalone “Doctor Who” film and, in “Doctor Who Am I,” he reluctantly allows himself to be drawn back into the time period to examine the making of the production as well the reaction it inspired.

Not to complain about what is largely a fun job, but writing about what Ncuti Gatwa is going to wear as the new Doctor is really hard. Have you seen the guy? Every single photo I’ve seen of him since his casting was announced looks like a potential Doctor costume. Every single one.
Does the New Doctor Need an Unchanging Costume?
First question: do we really need a capital C Costume? And if we do, is it going to be near-permanent? There’s a difference between something obviously designed and never changed out of, and a consistent look. Compare the Eighties Doctors, who wore largely the same clothes in every story and whose costume was clearly designed to be The Doctor’s Costume.
When you have a situation where everyone wears the same clothes for a prolonged period of time it’s as much a sign of artifice as...

Yasmin Finney, who plays fan-favorite Elle Argent on Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” will play a character named Rose on “Doctor Who,” BBC announced Monday. She will first appear in 2023, which will be the 60th anniversary of the cult sci-fi series.
Is she playing a version of Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler, who was a companion to the Ninth and Tenth Doctors (Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant), or an entirely different character who also happens to be named Rose? Showrunner Russell T. Davies says we’ll have to wait to find that out.
“How can there be another Rose?” Davies said in a statement. “You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the ‘Doctor Who’ set. We all fell in love with her in ‘Heartstopper,’ one of those shows which changes the world — and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

"Doctor Who", much like its titular time-traveler, has undergone periods of reinvention. One of those periods saw Paul McGann picking up the sonic screwdriver from Sylvester McCoy in a made-for-tv movie during 1996. The film takes a unique approach to the Doctor Who mythos, with the Doctor suffering from a case of amnesia and Eric Roberts playing the Master. Yes, there was a Doctor Who movie where Eric Roberts -- the master of villainy -- played the ultimate villain.
However, the movie faced obstacles greater than the Daleks or the Cybermen. Despite the BBC and Fox Television co-producing the "Doctor Who" movie and...

There are rumours – but, we should stress, just rumours – of David Tennant returning to Doctor Who in the role of the 14th Doctor.
These started on a Facebook group where someone suggested a credible BBC source had leaked the information (this person also leaked the casting of Sacha Dhawan as The Master). This in turn was then reported in The The Plymouth Herald and spread to other newspapers. In other words, it’s impossible to prove or disprove, and there has been no official announcement from the BBC, the new production team, or David Tennant (though his wife did Tweet this the day after the ‘story’ emerged). So this could easily be speculation about nothing, but godammit, if I’m going to do anything, I’m going to thoroughly speculate about nothing.

Regeneration stories are a tricky one in that they aren’t entirely consistent. The first time the process was even called regeneration was eleven years into the show’s first run. That story, ‘Planet of the Spiders’, felt like a summing up of the Pertwee era, a celebration of what had made it work and an indication that it was time to move on. This feeling crops up several times across the show’s history. Sometimes there’s a suggestion of the show addressing its own flaws, other times there’s just a bunch of strange decisions being made in the midst of chaotic productions. The only consistent is one actor leaves, another arrives, and change is afoot.
As we anticipate the Doctor’s next change, due this autumn in 2022’s third special, here are the past regeneration stories ranked from least to most successful.

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: Flux Episode 5 ‘Survivors of the Flux’
The first Master story my son ever saw was ‘Spyfall’, last year. A bit later we finally began the pilgrimage and watched the entire New Series over the space of eight or nine months. ‘Spyfall’ clearly had an impact, because every time a new character in a suit turned up, he’d immediately point to the screen and tell me “That’s the Master!”
So, when a mysterious, arch, obviously evil figure in a dapper black suit shows up and people begin to ponder whether he could, in fact, be our favourite renegade Time Lord (now that the Doctor doesn’t count) my first response is scepticism. And yet the recurring and oddly superfluous seeming character of The Grand Serpent does seem to have an awful lot of evidence stacking up against him.
Exhibit A: The Look

In March 1993, Doctor Who had been off-air for over three years. Paul McGann wouldn’t become the Doctor for another three, and it would be a further nine until Christopher Eccleston’s first appearance in the Tardis. The fans though, were keeping the show alive – fans such as Gavin Fuller, who chose it as his specialist subject in BBC One quiz Mastermind.
Fuller scored an impressive 16 points in his two minutes on Doctor Who, and increased that to a total of 29 after the General Knowledge round. He won the episode and went on to become the 1993 series champion, answering questions on the Crusades and the Medieval Castle in the British Isles as his two other specialist subjects.

Some acts are kind of hard to follow once they’ve helped an actor establish themselves as a particular character, but thankfully that’s not really a problem that Paul McGann has had in recent years, or ever since he was done with playing the part of Doctor Who. Many fans will likely realize that Paul had a strong career before his turn as the good Doctor and has been continuing that same career after his time spent on the show. He’s gone back to revisit the show a couple of times now but has still been able to keep moving forward

A new Doctor Who poll that set to find out who the most popular Doctor ever is has returned both some expected and unexpected results. RadioTimes.com ran the poll, which reportedly brought in around 50,000 votes, and now the final figures are back and Whovians everywhere have declared that David Tennant is the greatest incarnation of the Time Lord.
This isn’t much of a surprise, as the Scottish actor has managed to hold on to his widely popular status over the last ten years since he bowed out of the role on New Year’s Day 2010, nearly always coming out on top in polls of this type. Second place, however, is much more of a shock. Current Doctor Jodie Whittaker – whose era has been hugely divisive – was hot on Tennant’s heels, as he gained 10,518 votes while Whittaker brought in 10,423.

The fact that Christopher Eccleston is doing more Doctor Who for Big Finish productions, is exciting stuff. Considering Eccleston had a mixed time on Doctor Who – loving the character and the response of the younger audience especially, but playing the part while ill and disagreeing with the production team – it is also unexpected.
Having appeared at a few conventions and bumping into some of his successors recently, Eccleston seems more at peace with his legacy. It was a difficult time for him personally, but what an impact he has had on Doctor Who. As mentioned here, casting an actor of Eccleston’s reputation and stature immediately suggested this show was a serious proposition, disconnecting it from a variety of baggage.
As there was no guarantee Doctor Who would survive for more than one series, Eccleston’s departure meant that the Ninth Doctor had a complete character arc. His stories often led into one another,...

Season 13 of Doctor Who has been substantially delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and we’re unlikely to see it until late 2021 at the earliest. Perhaps recognizing that this is going to be an unusually dry year for new Doctor Who (though we still have a holiday special coming), the BBC has corralled its various licensees to create an epic cross-media storyline: Doctor Who: Time Lord Victorious.
This was unveiled in June and will be a gigantic arc starring three Doctors: the Eighth (Paul McGann), Ninth (Christopher Eccleston) and Tenth (David Tennant). The arc spans practically every form of media outside of TV, including novels, comics, audio dramas, video games and apparently even escape rooms.
Doctor Who producer James Gross recently hyped up the initiative by saying:
“BBC Studios’ Doctor Who licensees have come together to tell an amazing epic – one that’s full of monsters, fun and heart. All...
