John Wilkes Booth was desperate to be famous. Instead, he became infamous as the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. He had been born in 1838 as the ninth of ten children of the famed actor Junius Brutus Booth. Though he had shown talent, his career was often derailed by his emotional instability. His older brother Edwin Booth was considered one of the top actors of the day.
The handsome younger Booth had received strong reviews in a New York production of “Richard III” with the New York Herald declaring him a “veritable sensation.” Booth even told the paper “I’m determined to be the villain.” A staunch supporter of the Confederacy, by 1864 he had recruited several co-conspirators in his plan to kidnap Honest Abe. Their attempts failed, but on April 14, 1865, he learned Lincoln would attend the comedy “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theater that evening, During the third act...

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.
For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

From 1990 to 1995, an obscure comedy-drama TV series about life in Alaska gained a cult-like following. Airing on CBS, Northern Exposure featured actor Rob Morrow, who played Dr. Joel Fleischman, a New York doctor who gives up city living for a small rural Alaskan town filled with eccentric residents. It was a classic fish-out-of-water story right from the start.
While viewers loved tuning in to get a taste of life in “The Last Frontier,” the television series was not really filmed in Alaska.
The fictional town where ‘Northern Exposure’ took place
The quirky show, which won seven Emmy awards, two Golden Globes, and two Peabody awards, took place in the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska. The tiny backwoods locale had a population of 214, which changed to 215 when the new doctor arrived.
The opening credits of Northern Exposure featured a large moose walking down the center of Main Street in the quaint town.

It was an unusual ceremony, in which an Emmy rule change pitted series regulars against one-episode guest stars. In addition, two of the most awarded comedies of all time battled it out, a favorite drama lost the top spot and one of the most celebrated talk shows of all time finally received a top honor. This was also the last year that the Big Four networks received all the nominations for Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series. We’re throwing it back three decades to August 30, 1992, when Tim Allen, Kirstie Alley and Dennis Miller hosted the 44th Primetime Emmy Awards on Fox. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1992.
Between 1989 and 1992, “Cheers” and “Murphy Brown” volleyed the Best Comedy award back and forth. This was “Murphy’s” year, winning in this category for the second and final time. The other sitcoms up were “Brooklyn Bridge,” “Home Improvement” and “Seinfeld.

Between “Friends” and the “Scream” franchise, Courteney Cox knew that playing both comedy and horror were well within her wheelhouse — but something told her that the new Starz series “Shining Vale” would test her skills in unprecedented ways.

The stars of Northern Exposure — Rob Morrow, Janine Turner, Barry Corbin, Cynthia Geary and John Corbett — reunited to kick off this week’s Vulture Festival. During the panel Monday, the cast members reminisced about their time starring in the CBS series, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, though there was no mention of a revival series that was originally announced in 2018.
“Your chance of having a hit television is probably as good as your chance of going to space and circling Earth,” Corbin said about Northern Exposure’s success. “The casting fit, the location fit, the music fit. Everything fit.”
Corbin, who starred as astronaut and retired Marine fighter pilot Maurice J. Minnifield, agreed with his fellow cast mates that all the elements behind Northern Exposure made for a high-performing series that stood out from other shows at the time.

He’s baaack! Fans of “This Is Us” were given a treat in March’s Season 4 finale when Gerald McRaney returned as fan-favorite Nathan Katowski, aka Dr. K, for the first time in two seasons. McRaney won an Emmy in 2017 for his performance in the pilot episode, in which Dr. K comforts Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) after he loses one of three newborn triplets. He was nominated again in 2018 for his brief appearance in “The Car” episode, but lost to co-star Ron Cephas Jones. Do you think McRaney will earn a 2020 Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor? Make your predictions right now.
In “Strangers: Part Two,” Dr. K reunites with Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) when the young couple is feeling sad about their baby’s death on what would have been his first birthday. The doctor meets the surviving infants he helped bring into the world, Kate and Kevin,...

Herbert Stempel, the contestant on NBC’s “Twenty-One” who helped uncover the quiz show rigging scandals of the 1950s, died on April 7 at the age of 93.
His death, which had not been publicly announced, was confirmed by a former stepdaughter, Bobra Fyne, according to the New York Times. Stempel was portrayed by John Turturro in the 1994 drama “Quiz Show,” directed by Robert Redford.
Stempel was born in the Bronx on Dec. 19, 1926, the son of Solomon and Mary Stempel. He was a gifted student with a prodigious memory. As a child, he represented P.S. 6 on the radio show “Americana Quiz,” and remained undefeated for weeks. He attended Bronx High School of Science and scored at genius level on an I.Q. test. “Black Mirror’s” Emmy journey this season has had more twists than a “Black Mirror” episode. After getting permission to stay in the Best TV Movie category, despite its submission “Smithereens” being five minutes short of the new 75-minute requirement, the show was shunted to drama last week. That means instead of the limited/TV movie acting races, “Black Mirror’s” Season 5 stars can now choose to enter in drama lead, supporting or guest. And if any of them or Netflix are torn, take it from us: Go guest.
Current Emmy rules stipulate that performers who appear in less than 50 percent of a show’s season are eligible to compete in guest, but are not required to, so they can pick whatever category they want. But to put it bluntly, guest is arguably where all “Black Mirror” actors belong. The show is an anthology series with a different cast every episode.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Billions” Season 5, Episode 2, “The Chris Rock Test,” including the ending.]
For a show that’s ostensibly about two morally depraved, power-hungry men locked in a perpetual dick-swinging contest of Shakespearean proportions, this world’s stage hosts a bevy of unconventional secondary characters — and they’re far more than mere players. Like its HBO cousin “Succession,” “Billions” thrives off support from second stringers that run the gamut from ingratiating eccentrics (see Stephen Kunken’s Ari Spyros) to scrappily ambitious women (Condola Rashad’s Kate Sacker). True to form, “Billions” came out swinging with its Season 5 premiere, and the second episode makes use of some of its best supporting players to set the chess board for yet another scintillating smackdown of a season.
The Showtime drama scored many points when it introduced non-binary sensation Taylor Mason (Asia Kate Dillon) in Season 2, and the writers quickly ramped up the savant trader’s role.

Hey, "Hawaii Five-0" fans. It's time, again, to find out what's coming up in the next, new episode of this current 10th season. The next, new episode will, of course, be episode number 3. Let's give CBS a round of applause. They came through again with a few teaser descriptions for episode 3 via their official press release. We'll be working off of it for this spoiler session. So, let's not waste anymore time and just dig right into it. For starters, the producers did name this episode something. The official title for episode 3 is called,"E uhi ana ka wa i hala i na mea i hala." That means, "Passing time obscures the past" in English. So, that's neat I guess. It sounds like episode 3 will feature some very interesting, intense, highly dramatic and shocking scenes as a murdered scuba diver is found. Quinn gets arrested and more! We'll go ahead...

There are changes afoot on Oahu.
A longtime fixture left and a potential new team member made her debut on Hawaii Five-0 Season 10 Episode 1.
After one episode, I'm not at all sold that this is an improvement.
Yes, Jerry's departure did feel organic, which was important.
That didn't happen with the departures of Chin and Kono after Hawaii Five-0 Season 7, when Daniel Dae-Kim and Grace Park left in a salary dispute.
It made sense that Jerry took stock after being shot and decided to go write a book about one of his conspiracy theories that leave viewers and his teammates thinking "Huh?"
Jerry getting his badge was a series highlight, because it proved anybody could grow up and become part of Five-0.
But with the addition of Tani, Junior, and to a lesser degree Adam on Hawaii Five-0 Season 8, Jerry's role as the squad's computer wizard became less necessary, although...

With its Season 10 premiere, CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 gained a familiarly resourceful helping hand, before saying a bittersweet farewell to a longtime team member.
Picking up right where the finale left off… yes, it was Jerry whom the would-be assassin’s bullet hit. Flash forward two weeks, and he is in the hospital recovering just fine, though the brush with death, he hints during some Battleship with Junior, has led him to wonder: Is a life spent immersed in D&d campaigns a life well lived? Tani (looking ) arrives, to accompany tuxedo-clad Junes to the opera, where she plans to get in a solid three-hour nap.

From Northern Exposure to The Good Place, composer David Schwartz has given us some of the most memorable music in television today.
David Schwartz has produced some of the most recognizable television themes in modern times, from his very first gig as the composer for Northern Exposure with its signature creole sound to the final seasons of The Good Place and Veep. Schwartz spoke to us for The Fourth Wall podcast about the unlikely start of his career and the twists and turns along the way. We gained a bit of insight into how Schwartz puts together a unique combination of instruments for his compositions and why viewers can’t help but get his themes stuck in their heads.
As a bass player and producer earlier in his career, Schwartz got pulled into the television world quite firmly when he pitched his iconic Northern Exposure opening theme to the show’s producers.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Who is your favorite TV doctor of all time? (Doctor Who does not count.)
Damian Holbrook (@damianholbrook), TV Guide Magazine
I am not a fan of how TV usually represents doctors. They are mostly either super earnest and “I am going to save you at the risk of my career!” annoying or the “doesn’t play by the rules” rebel who rides a motorcycle down the ER hallway. Both are tired. And don’t even start me on the hard-ass doctors who obviously know everything and show it off while parading a crew of new residents through a massive hospital during the opening of soooooo many pilots. We get it: Their job is their life and they have a secret soft center.

"Do I do the right thing and put myself in danger?" A24 has debuted the first trailer for an indie war drama titled The Kill Team, the narrative feature directorial debut of filmmaker Dan Krauss (who also directed the documentary 5B this year). This is based on the same events that inspired his own 2013 documentary also titled The Kill Team, about a young American soldier in Afghanistan is disturbed by his commanding officer's behavior and is faced with a moral dilemma. Described as "an urgent and explosive recounting of one of the darkest incidents in the not-so-distant history of American military exploits." Nat Wolff co-stars with Alexander Skarsgård, plus Adam Long, Jonathan Whitesell, Brian Marc, Osy Ikhile, Rob Morrow, Anna Francolini, and Oliver Ritchie. It's intriguing to see a film addressing the darker side of the American military, and how they often crossed the line in Afghanistan. This looks better than expected.

Atrocities don’t exist in a vacuum, and “The Kill Team” is most valuable — and chillingly effective — as an exposé of the means by which honorable young military men grow comfortable with perpetrating heinous crimes. Based on his 2013 documentary of the same name, writer-director Dan Krauss’ narrative retelling depicts the methodical murderous inculcation of a young American soldier in 2010 Afghanistan, led by a committed performance from Nat Wolff and a scarily sociopathic Alexander Skarsgård. Those star turns should help make the difficult film an easier sell to mainstream audiences when, after its Tribeca Film Festival premiere, it receives a theatrical release courtesy of A24.
As with the earlier nonfiction version, Krauss’ film concerns the Maywand District murders, in which a “kill team” of U.S. soldiers stationed in the Kandahar Valley executed a number of Afghan civilians and then covered up their crimes by staging the scenes to look like attacks.

Beloved '90s "fish out of water" series Northern Exposure is heading for a revival at CBS.
THR has noted that original star Rob Morrow is set to return alongside show creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey for a brand new season of Northern Exposure, which will see Morrow's character Dr. Joel Fleischman heading back to the icy cold landscapes of Cicely, Alaska, "for the funeral of an old friend" and "reuniting with some of his former neighbors" while interacting with "a new set of quirky characters."
Brand is currently bashing out a script for a first episode of the proposed revival, and Morrow's charming co-star John Corbett, who went on to play the mistreated Aiden over several seasons of HBO's Sex And The City, is currently on board as a producer.
