Ah, "The Notebook." Everyone knows about this now-classic romance film, helmed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. It's the story of a boy and a girl from different sides of the tracks who fall in love with each other in the 1940s. Gosling's character, a poor hellraiser named Noah, woos McAdams' wealthy Allie first by dangling off a Ferris Wheel and then inviting her to lie down in the middle of an intersection. Sounds romantic. We've all been there, right?
Meanwhile, while this story is playing out in the past, we also cut back and forth to the present, where an old man named Duke (James Garner) is telling the love story of Noah and Allie to an old woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing home. If you haven't seen the movie or read the Nicholas Sparks book that inspired it,...

He played Jeff Conway, the husband of Connie Stevens’ character, on the 1964-65 ABC sitcom Wendy and Me, also starring George Burns, who produced the show and appeared as the owner of the apartment building in which the young couple lives.

Now streaming on Netflix in its entirety, Griselda marks a career-defining turn for executive producer and star Sofia Vergara, who sheds every last cell of her Modern Family persona as she transforms into real-life cocaine queen Griselda Blanco.
Well, maybe not every last cell. The true-crime drama’s third episode opens with Vergara cruising around Miami, singing along to — what else — Laura Branagan’s 1982 bop “Gloria.” If your immediate thought is that this must be a not-so-subtle reference to Modern Family‘s Gloria Pritchett, the role which famously earned Vergara four Primetime Emmy nominations, you’re definitely not alone.

Although his name might be unfamiliar to a young generation of moviegoers, John Cassavetes was a giant in raising the profile of independent film in America. As a young man, after enrolling in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he took on small parts in films and appeared in episodic television until he picked up a camera and exploded onto the indie film scene with his 1959 film “Shadows.” From there, he went on to write and direct “Faces” (1968), which earned three Oscar nominations and eventually to 1974’s “A Woman Under the Influence,” which starred his wife Gena Rowlands (whom he met at the American Academy) in arguably her most triumphant performance. Cassavetes is such an important figure in independent cinema that every year, the Independent Spirit Awards present the John Cassavetes Award to the year’s best film that cost less than $500,000.

Martin Scorsese is famous for his collaborations with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, and the first feature-length film with all three, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has become a critical and commercial success. It’s not unusual for a director to find a “favorite” actor and form a successful relationship. In fact, this practice goes back to the beginning of the industry.
In 1912, pioneering filmmaker D.W. Griffith cast 18-year-old Lillian Gish in his short film “An Unseen Enemy,” and the two worked on more than 40 short and feature-length productions over the next decade. One of the most famous scenes from the silent era is in their film “Way Down East,” in which Gish floats unconscious on an ice floe; she had lifelong nerve damage in several fingers as a result of her performance in that scene.

Britney Spears loves to defy expectations, whether she’s releasing hits, dancing with knives, or unveiling a memoir with white-hot gossip about Justin Timberlake. In addition to being one of pop music’s most memorable artists of the past several decades, Britney Jean Spears dabbles in bringing her unique energy to the silver screen. In a shocking twist, an audition tape featuring the star of 2002’s Crossroads is making the rounds. The video depicts Spears’ tearful 3-minute audition for Nick Cassavetes’ 2004 romance The Notebook. The video, recorded 21 years ago, is going viral, displaying Spears’ emotional bid for the role she lost to Rachel McAdams.
In the video, Spears reads lines with Ryan Gosling. According to The Daily Mail, casting director Matthew Barry hid the tape for decades. Still, the video is out in the public eye, with Barry saying Spears impressed the producers with her soulful interpretation of The Notebook’s Allie.

Terence Davies, the Liverpool-born director of autobiographical memory pieces like “The Long Day Closes” and “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” has died. He was 77. The English filmmaker passed away peacefully in his home after a short illness on October 7, as confirmed on his official social media pages.
Davies directed several masterpieces in his lifetime, from the sorrowful “The Deep Blue Sea” starring Rachel Weisz as an eternally unhappy seeker of love to his debut feature “Distant Voices,” built on his own closeted working-class British upbringing. You could even say the same about his last film, “Benediction,” starring Jack Lowden as the queer poet Siegfried Sassoon, wrapped around by a coterie of Bright Young Things. He received great acclaim for films like “A Quiet Passion,” starring Cynthia Nixon as the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson, as well as the Edith Wharton adaptation “House of Mirth,” led by Gillian Anderson. If there’s one thing we hope that this year’s ‘80s Week package better illuminates, it’s the incredible depth and range on display in the films of the decade. While the iconic movies and stars of the totally radical ‘80s tend to most easily remembered for neon-tinted, big-haired, Tangerine Dream-set turns, consider this: the decade included all-time work from major performers like Meryl Streep, Ossie Davis, Jessica Lange, Robert De Niro, Gena Rowlands, Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Newman, Jackie Chan, and Whoopi Goldberg.
These are the kind of stars who show up and show out no matter the year, but it’s in the ‘80s in which they all captured the incredible essence of what makes them greats.
But they’re hardly alone on this list, which also includes indelible work from stars like David Byrne, Sandrine Bonaire, Babak Ahmadpour, Seret Scott, Mieko Harada, Ken Ogata, and even Divine...

William Friedkin, the Oscar-winning director of “The French Connection” and legend behind “The Exorcist,” has died at age 87. His death in Los Angeles was first reported by Variety, and the news was confirmed by Chapman University dean Stephen Galloway, a friend of Friedkin’s wife, former studio head Sherry Lansing.
Friedkin’s sensational 1971 “The French Connection” earned five Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. Friedkin’s 1973 “The Exorcist” changed the game for horror, earning Best Picture and Director nominations.
Friedkin is regarded as a maverick of the New Hollywood school of filmmakers alongside the likes of Peter Bogdanovich and Francis Ford Coppola. His other features include his breakout “The Birthday Party,” “The Boys in the Band,” “Sorcerer,” “Cruising,” “To Live and Die in L.A,” “Bug,” and most recently “Killer Joe” — all films that garnered controversy in one way or another.

Claire Danes seems en route to her 10th Emmy nomination — and eighth for acting — for her turn on the FX limited series “Fleishman Is in Trouble.” Danes sits in second place in the Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actress odds, and a win would not only give her a fourth Emmy, but it would make her one of nine women to win both limited/TV movie acting categories.
A two-time Best Drama Actress champ for “Homeland,” Danes took home her first Emmy in Best Limited/TV Movie Actress for the HBO film “Temple Grandin” in 2010. She’s never been nominated in supporting for a limited series or TV movie, so “Fleishman” will represent the first chance she has to complete the set.

Gena Rowlands is the Ocar-nominated thespian who made a name for herself thanks to a series of manic, high-wire performances in several films, many of them directed by her late husband, indie maverick John Cassavetes. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of Rowlands’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After making a name for herself with bit parts onstage and onscreen, Rowlands flourished when she became the muse of Cassavetes, who she married in 1954. A fellow performer, Cassavetes would raise money from appearing in movies like “The Dirty Dozen” (1967) and “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), immediately funneling the funds into his own projects. His wife was usually front and center, as were their family members and friends.
Rowlands’s operatic performances were a perfect match for her husband’s improvisational, energetic films, including “Faces” (1968), “Minnie and Moskowitz” (1971), “Opening Night” (1977) and “Love Streams” (1984). Her...

John Beasley, the admired character actor who played the school bus driver Irv Harper on The WB drama Everwood and Barton Bellentine, the father of Cedric the Entertainer’s character, on the TV Land comedy The Soul Man, died Tuesday. He was 79.

[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Barry, “Wow.”]
It’d be understandable if you expected things not to work out for Sarah Goldberg’s Sally Reed in the series finale of HBO’s Barry.
After all, things hadn’t been going her way for a while. In season three, just as she finally achieved the success she’d yearned for, the rug was pulled out from under her when her show is canceled (and so is she, after a career-ending outburst and her association with her hitman ex-boyfriend Barry Berkman, played by writer-director-star Bill Hader). In season four, Sally is a shell of herself — or at least she thinks so. Viewers saw her find her way back to Los Angeles and follow Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) path, pivoting from acting to teaching acting. And while it’s something she’s good at, it’s not the thing she wants. Her ego, eventually, gets in her way once again.

The end of "Barry" is nigh, and while we don't know exactly where these characters will end up, we do know that the actors had a major say in it. The very nature of the show intertwines the roles of performer and creator: Bill Hader isn't just the star, he also co-created the series. He's written several "Barry" episodes and directed plenty too (including the entire fourth season), showing off his filmmaking chops in the process.
Hader's experience on both sides of the camera might be why, according to his co-stars, he's generous about letting their perceptions inform their characters. Ahead of the series finale, the "Barry" main cast sat down with the Los Angeles Times for a group interview. Henry Winkler (Gene Cousineau) and Sarah Goldberg (Sally Reed) both described how Hader gave them a voice at the table.

Midway through its final season, “Barry” jumps forward in time eight years to find Barry (Bill Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) living on the run in the middle of nowhere with their son John. But while Barry is pretty pleased with their isolation, Sally finds herself in a “total hellscape of her own making,” Goldberg told TheWrap.
In this future, Sally is working as a waitress named Emily. But she’s also putting on a performance – each day she puts on a wig, fake nails and ties it all off with an overdone Southern accent. All of which is entirely unnecessary.
“I was really excited about that episode,” Goldberg said in an April interview. “I’ve been asking Bill since Season 1 Episode 1, ‘Can we please go like full Gena Rowlands ‘Woman Under the Influence’ opening night? Can we go all the way down to the darkness?...

Rachel McAdams had been anointed Hollywood's latest "It Girl" when she was tapped to grace the cover of Vanity Fair's 2006 Oscar issue alongside Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. She was coming off a string of critical and commercial successes in "Mean Girls," "The Notebook," "Red Eye" and "The Family Stone," and appeared to be on the cusp of superstardom. But when McAdams learned, upon arriving at the Tom Ford photoshoot, that she was expected to pose nude, she walked, promptly fired her publicist (who'd failed to inform her of the shoot's parameters), and pressed the pause button on her film career.
Prior to the #MeToo revolution, firing up double rockets at the exploitative Hollywood movie star machine was considered career suicide. This was how women got smeared with the "difficult" label. McAdams, however, persevered and has established herself as one of the most brilliantly unpredictable actors of her generation. She's...

There are precious few cinematic romances that can hold a candle to Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund in 1942's "Casablanca." It's a relationship that rekindles after heartbreak and is filled to the brim with complications far beyond the usual romantic drama scope. When Ilsa re-enters Rick's life, he's a bit bitter after being left flat with little more than a Dear John letter. He resents being hurt and has lived his life determined to wall off his emotions so that never happens again.
To further complicate things, Ilsa happens to be traveling with her husband, a resistance leader named Victor Lazlo (Paul Henreid), who was believed to have been killed by the Nazis but is very much alive and still fighting the good fight. But Rick and Ilsa's love is deep and real and the two can't help but fall back to their old emotions around each other, even as...

Kristen Stewart has been used to seeing herself on the big screen even long before her Twilight days. But when it came to other actors claiming they couldn’t watch their own performances, she wasn’t buying it.
Kristen Stewart once revealed some of her favorite performances Kristen Stewart | Gerald Matzka/Getty Images
Although Twilight turned her into an A-lister, Stewart has been an actor throughout much of her childhood. Starting out, she had very small parts in films like Flinstones in Viva Las Vegas and Safety Objects. From there, she scored a major role in Panic Room, and has been a fixture in the film industry since.
Stewart has been open about being very shy when she was a kid. Still, she chose the collaborative profession of acting because she simply enjoyed it.

Ruth Wilson, star of The Affair, Luther and His Dark Materials, has performed with many leading actors, usually one at a time, but in May her endurance will be put to the test when she embarks on a marathon stage show in London playing the same scene almost nonstop for 24 hours with one hundred different men — one after the other.
“Yes, a hundred is enough,” she laughs.
“It’s a huge act of stamina,” she tells me of The Second Woman, a title inspired by a play that’s at the center of John Cassavetes’s 1977 movie Opening Night starring Gena Rowlands. ”I dunno how I’m going to get through it and that’s part of the appeal to me,” she adds.
For a split second her face looks stricken as she tells me “I will lose any sense of performance as the show goes on,” she sighs, though...

You can easily understand why Andrea Riseborough’s fellow actors have been so awestruck by her performance as the alcoholic mum in Michael Morris’s unsung, low-budget movie To Leslie and why so many of them voted for her to receive an Oscar nomination. What is harder to fathom is why Riseborough has subsequently been pilloried in the media for her Oscar campaign and threatened with having her nomination revoked.
No one treats Meryl Streep with this level of disrespect – and Riseborough is arguably as close as UK cinema comes to a film actor with Streep’s daring and versatility. The real mystery here isn’t how she gatecrashed this year’s Oscar race but that she isn’t more appreciated and better known.
It was confirmed today that the Oscar nomination still stands, in spite of the controversy which has threatened to engulf the movie in recent days. In To Leslie,...

Natasha Lyonne's leading roles are pretty unconventional female characters. They have a rugged androgyny that comes naturally to the actress, but it's not just Lyonne that gives them a sort of gender-transcendent quality. These characters break out of the traditional archetypes that most actresses are restricted by. In fact, they more closely resemble classic male characters — like Martin Sheen's Benjamin Willard in "Apocalypse Now."
Willard's descent into madness is memorable because it happens inwardly. We've seen women devolve into hysteria in cinematic masterpieces like "A Woman Under the Influence," but rarely do we take a female character's passivity to indicate introspection. Lyonne hoped to break out of this trope when she took the creative reigns on projects like "Russian Doll" and Rian Johnson's new series "Poker Face."
Even when women are protagonists, they are often "defined by an outer life," Lyonne pointed out in an interview with Time.

Disability is usually the last identity category most people think of when we talk collectively about bolstering diversity, equity and inclusion across institutions — yet disabled people comprise the most diverse minoritized population in the world. After all, anyone can become disabled at any time. Disability is also often invisible: Think of how many people you know who live with chronic illness, chronic pain, or learning and cognitive conditions. Even more invisible within the disabled population, however, are those who experience mental health difficulties. Despite the fact that one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness, it remains a silenced and stigmatized subject.
Last year, when Coda‘s Oscar buzz was growing, many commentators reflected on the relative dearth of films that accurately depict disabilities, the fact that an even smaller number of those films actually receive awards consideration at all, and the perennial question of who, exactly,...

Named one of Unifrance’s 10 Talents to Watch for 2023, rising star Nadia Tereszkiewicz is set to breakout.
After stepping onto the international stage thanks to her work in Monia Chokri and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi’s 2022 Sundance and Cannes titles “Babysitter” and “Forever Young,” the Franco-Finnish actor will next step into the spotlight, hitting the French award circuit for “Forever Young” while promoting Francois Ozon’s “The Crime Is Mine” – a starry showbiz caper that places Tereszkiewicz front and center.
And given the performer’s upcoming lead roles in Stephanie Di Giusto’s “La Rosalie” and Robin Campillo’s “Vazaha, The Strangers,” a number of repeat festival visits seem more than likely. Variety spoke with the actress as part the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris.

Angelina Jolie movies list is so loaded it’s hard to pick which is her very best and which are not so cool. My foolproof technique for doing this for any actor is to check what critics and audiences are saying across multiple channels. That’s exactly how I arrived at ranking Angelina Jolie’s movies from best to worst. In the end, you can hardly go wrong with the multiple award winning actress. Even the worst movies on the list feel somewhat watchable because of her graceful and charming personality. There are scarcely a handful of actors that come close to Jolie’s reputation.
This article highlights some of the best and worst movies on the Angelina Jolie movies list.

Opening Night. In John Cassavetes’s Opening Night (1977), the actress Myrtle Gordon (Gena Rowlands) accepts an invitation from the playwright Sarah Goode (Joan Blondell) to settle a professional conflict over drinks. The newly-middle-aged Myrtle struggles so much to connect with the leading role in Sarah’s play, an older woman who lacks agency in her married life that she can’t even read all of her lines. After identifying the disconnect between her life experience and that of her character, Myrtle begins to articulate her vision of an ideal performer. “Once you’re convincing in a part, the audience accepts you as that,” Myrtle explains, loosening her confrontational tone. “Listen, Sarah, I don’t have a husband, I don’t have a family. This is it for me. I mean, I get my kicks out of acting. If I can reach a woman sitting in the audience who thinks that...

Michelle Pfeiffer (‘The First Lady’) would be 2nd actress to win Golden Globe for playing Betty Ford
A full decade after the conclusion of Gerald Ford’s presidency, Gena Rowlands starred in a 1987 ABC biopic centered around his wife, simply titled “The Betty Ford Story.” The telefilm offered an honest look into the former first lady’s struggles with prescription drug and alcohol addiction, and Rowlands’s committed performance brought her a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe. Now, there is a chance of history being made if Michelle Pfeiffer ends up also clinching a Golden Globe for her own take on Betty Ford in “The First Lady.”
The Showtime limited series, which aired all 10 of its episodes this spring, follows the lives of three U.S. presidential spouses, with the other two being Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson) and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis). According to Gold Derby’s predictions, Pfeiffer has the best shot of the three at making it into the 2023 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Golden Globe lineup.

Immediately joining the first ranks of artists’ memoirs, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans is both a vivid capturing of the auteur’s earliest flashes of filmmaking insight and a portrait, full of love yet unclouded by nostalgia, of the family that made him.
Brought to life by heart-grabbing performances from Michelle Williams, Paul Dano and relative newcomer Gabriel Labelle, it brims with compassion and understanding for both of his parents, whose divorce split their tight-knit family when he was a teen.
It begins with little Sammy Fabelman (Mateo Zoryan Francis-DeFord), about to see his first movie, standing apprehensively outside the cinema. He’s scared to go inside, where he’s heard the stories are told by giant people, and his parents (Mitzi and Burt, played by Williams and Dano) try to assuage his fears. Amid their soothing assurances, Burt crouches down and tries...

While Glenn Close has yet to win an Oscar, she is your overwhelming choice to receive the 2023 Screen Actors Guild life achievement award. We recently hosted a poll about which actress should be selected for the prestigious SAG honor. Over 2,000 people voted worldwide, with 49.27 choosing Close. Following her in second place was Meryl Streep with 29.56. See full poll results below.
The 2022 recipient of the honor was Dame Helen Mirren. There was no award given in 2021, but it was three men in a row before then (see list below). The Screen Actors Guild will most likely be announcing their life achievement award recipient for 2023 in the near future. Who do you think should be taking home this prestigious trophy chosen by the SAG-AFTRA committee?
The 2022 recipient of the honor was Dame Helen Mirren. There was no award given in 2021, but it was three men in a row before then (see list below). Take our poll below and make your best guess on the selection. All 10 of these actresses in the poll have two things in common with typical decisions by this committee: at least 65 years old with a history of charitable and/or humanitarian works. Coming soon: we will offer a poll for actors in the near future.

The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress race is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive ones at the Emmys. That is due in part to Showtime’s “The First Lady,” which premieres on Sunday, April 17 at 9/8c and could inaugurate not one, not two, but three nominees: Gillian Anderson, Viola Davis and Michelle Pfeiffer.
An anthology series reframing American leadership through the lens of three first ladies, the first installment, directed by Emmy winner Susanne Bier (“The Night Manager”), stars Davis as Michelle Obama, Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt, and delves into the women’s personal and political lives, exploring everything from their journeys to Washington, their family life and their world-changing political contributions, making their impact visible.
Of the three leading ladies, Davis is currently ranked the highest in our early combined Emmy odds, sitting in second place, just behind Margaret Qualley...
