"Good night, John-Boy. Good night, Elizabeth. And good night, daddy. Good night, son. And good night, mama. Good night, Mary Ellen. Good night, Jim Bob." Even if you've never watched a single moment of the classic TV show "The Waltons," the impact the series has had on television continues on even to this day. With the series' roots stemming back all the way to one of the most hated episodes of "The Twilight Zone" in history, references to "The Waltons" have extended all the way to films like 2016's "The Nice Guys," where Matt Bomber's villainous Dr. Malek is given the code name "John Boy" as he shares a similar facial birthmark to John-Boy actor Richard Thomas.

The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

Though Thomas had reservations about leaving his Walton family behind, he ultimately felt that it was a necessary move, he recently told his former co-star Judy Norton.

An admission: I’m not a giant fan of war movies. I loved “Platoon,” “Full Metal Jacket,” “Apocalypse Now,” “The Thin Red Line,” “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan,” to name a half-dozen. But too often, I’ve found the violence gratuitous, the point about the pointlessness of war driven home too hard and transparently. But my fellow editors at Gold Derby have been insisting for weeks that the German remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front” on Netflix was a harrowing masterpiece that needed to be taken more seriously in the Oscar race – and not just for Best International Feature but picture, director (Edward Berger), adapted screenplay, cinematography and a slew of crafts categories, too. I finally caved and watched it over the weekend, and I’m happy to report they were right.

Edward Berger’s gripping, and gutting, World War I drama All Quiet on the Western Front continued its extraordinary award season run on Thursday when it picked up 14 BAFTA nominations, leading the pack, ahead of Martin McDonagh’s Irish drama The Banshees of Inisherin and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s metaverse action comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once, which received 10 nods each.
The 14 noms tied the all-time record for a non-English-language film, blowing past the 12 nominations secured by Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film tribute The Artist (2011), while equaling the tally scored by Ang Lee’s wuxia masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon more than 20 years ago.
In addition to the expected nomination in the best non-English-language feature category, the war drama picked up nominations for best film for producer Malte Grunert, best director for Berger, best adapted screenplay (co-written by Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell) and a best supporting actor BAFTA nom for Albrecht Schuch,...

Filmed in the tumultuous events of May 1968, Jean-Denis Bonan’s A Woman Kills never found distribution due to controversy around the director’s first film and producer Anatole Dauman was unable to find distribution for the film for 45 years until Luna Park Films brought it back to life in a new restoration.
Now released on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere, audiences outside of France can finally experience this utterly singular film, a new wave-influenced serial killer film that presents its narrative in an almost true crime approach yet focuses more on the psychological aspect with echoes of German Expressionism and Franju, set to a discordant,...

When German writer Erich Maria Remarque was 18 and a student at the University of Munster, he was drafted into the army and fought in the trenches on the Western front during World War I. He was wounded five times with the final instance in 1917 being so serious he spent the last year of the conflict recuperating in a German hospital. His experiences during the global conflict inspired his powerful 1929 anti-war novel “All Quiet On the Western Front” which, with the war in Ukraine, seems more timely than ever.
The novel slammed the door on the concept of the romanticism of war. War is hell. The book’s protagonist, the wide-eyed innocent Paul Baumer, and his friends are excited to get into battle on the Western front, exterminate the enemy and return home heroes. But Paul quickly realizes the horrors of war. Reading the book is a visceral experience-one can smell...

Anyone of a certain age who enjoyed watching The Waltons during its original run in the 1970s is pleased to see the show return in a similar form on The CW. They're also thrilled that Richard Thomas, the original John-Boy Walton, is along for the ride.
In anticipation of A Waltons' Thanksgiving, premiering on Sunday, November 20, on The CW, we spoke with Thomas about his career and returning to the role that made him a household name.
Good. Thank you so much for talking with me today.
Oh, it's my pleasure.
I have to tell you, of course, as so many other people have said, I grew up watching you, so talking to you now and especially about this new version of the Waltons is really special.
Oh, thank you. Thank you. I appreciate that. I love it when people talk about having watched the show years back. It makes me happy.

Who better to wish you a happy Thanksgiving and introduce the family at the heart of A Waltons Thanksgiving than the original John Boy himself, Richard Thomas? He does just that in TV Insider’s exclusive trailer for the CW special premiering on Sunday, November 20 on The CW. “We’re not only grateful for all those blessings we’ve received, but we’re also reminded of the precious role that giving plays with a family called the Waltons,” he says. “We have so much to be grateful for. I thank the good lord every day for this family,” Olivia (Bellamy Young) says. Watch the trailer above to see the family together, a young boy showing up with nowhere to go (who better to take him in than the Waltons?), and more. (You don’t want to miss the end.) A Waltons Thanksgiving is a follow-up to the 2021 movie, The Waltons’ Homecoming.

All Quiet on the Western Front, a German World War I drama starring Daniel Brühl, was Netflix’s No. 1 non-English-language film of the week, entering the top 10 in 90 countries worldwide.
In its weekly top 10 list published Tuesday, Netflix said Edward Berger’s feature, an adaptation of the classic anti-war novel by German writer Erich Maria Remarque, racked up 31.5 million viewing hours since its debut on the platform last Friday.
It’s a great start for the film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and is Germany’s official submission for the 2023 Oscars in the best international feature category. Newcomer Felix Kammerer stars as Paul Bäumer, a gung-ho student who signs up to fight on the Western front, only to be quickly disillusioned by the senseless brutality he experiences in the trenches. Albrecht Schuch (System Crasher) co-stars as his brother-in-arms Stanislaus Katczinsky.

I’ll be honest right from the start. I’m not a huge fan of the original It TV movie. I would have been seven when it was originally shown and I obviously knew about it or had at least seen the Tim Curry Pennywise image many times as I grew up, but it wasn’t until I was about thirty years old that I bought the DVD and gave it a watch. I think without nostalgia, it doesn’t hit quite the same and, for me at least, the first part of the remake blows it away. But the original has such a following and has such a cultural significance that it’s a very important movie for the horror genre.
Maybe unsurprisingly it’s...

If The Waltons seemed dated in 1972—telling the story of a rural Virginia family weathering the Great Depression and World War II—it must feel prehistoric to TV viewers now, half a century later. Yet the popularity of the franchise endures, with the original nine-season series streaming on Freevee for free and The CW airing one Waltons movie last year and prepping another for this holiday season. The historical drama debuted on CBS September 14, 1972, and we’re honoring its 50th anniversary with a roundup of the top 10 episodes, as ranked by IMDb voters. 10. Lewis Milestone’s 1930 classic All Quiet on the Western Front was based on the 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque and became the first adaptation of a book to win the Oscar for Best Picture, as well as the first Best Picture Oscar winner to also take Best Director. It has hardly been touched by filmmakers since then save for a TV movie remake by director Delbert Mann in 1979 that starred Richard Thomas. Now that has changed, and in a significant way, as the book has finally been taken on by Germany with director Edward Berger’s adaptation that finally shows us the perspective from the German side. It has already been selected as the German entry for the 95th Oscars’ International Feature Film race, and just had its world premiere Monday at the Toronto Film Festival.

Director Edward Berger and producer Malte Grunert are set to follow up their new adaption of Erich Maria Remarque’s harrowing war novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” with a much more upbeat work, a remake of the rollicking 1967 French-Italian pic “The Last Adventure,” which starred Alain Delon, Lino Ventura and Joanna Shimkus.
Grunert and Berger had been working on the remake and were already in development when “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which makes its world premiere at the Toronto fest Sept. 12, came along.
They are now planning to return to the project after Berger finishes his next pic, the Vatican-set thriller “Conclave,” based on the Robert Harris novel and set to star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini. Berger goes into prep on “Conclave” in October in Rome, with production scheduled to start in January.

Lewis Milestone’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) was arguably the first, and inarguably, amongst the very best anti-war movies ever made. Adapted from Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel, which Remarque based on his own experiences as a German soldier in the trenches of World War I, the film went on to win Oscars for best picture and best director. All Quiet on the Western Front was remade for American television in 1979, with Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine.
But it has taken nearly a century since the publication of Remarque’s book for it to be adapted in German, the language in which it was written. Partly, this has to do with the book’s history in the Third Reich. The Nazis banned and burned copies of All Quiet on the Western Front for its “treasonous”, and decidedly unheroic, depiction of war.

Based on the world renowned bestselling novel by Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front tells the “gripping story of a young German soldier on the Western Front of World War I. Paul and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives, and each other, in the trenches.” Beautiful, haunting, and horrifying, the teaser trailer for this latest incarnation of All Quiet on the Western Front looks mighty impressive. Author Erich Maria Remarque's novel "All Quiet On the Western Front" is undoubtedly a stone cold classic of the wartime genre, offering a gritty, zeroed in perspective on what it was like to be on the front lines during one of the most horrific wars in human history. Namely, World War I. The novel has been adapted several times but now, Netflix is bringing us a new adaptation from a whole new perspective.
This film represents the first time that it has ever been adapted in German, which should give the whole thing a new feeling and perspective. Let's have a look at what they've cooked up with this initial teaser, shall we?
All Quiet On The Western Front Gets A German Adaptation
The trailer kicks off by opening with some classic text from Remarque's book, setting the bleak and dreadful tone that casts a shadow over the story.

“This is neither an accusation, nor a confession … and least of all an adventure.”
Those lines, a quote from German writer Erich Maria Remarque, open the first teaser trailer for Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front, the first-ever German-language adaptation of Remarque’s classic World War I novel.
The trailer, which you can check out exclusively below, is the first glimpse of Edward Berger’s film, which will have its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 12.
From the start, it is clear that this is not your typical war movie. Images of the fresh-faced soldiers excitedly marching to the front are cross-cut with shots of violence and terror in the trenches. True to its source material, there is no heroism and no grand adventure in the war depicted in All Quiet on the Western Front.

No one reigns over the Emmys quite like Laura Linney does. A four-time champ, she has famously scored a victory for each of her nominated roles so far, having won for “Wild Iris” (2002), “John Adams” (2008) and “The Big C: Hereafter” (2013) for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress, and for “Frasier” (2004) for Best Comedy Guest Actress. Now the actor has one last chance to maintain this sterling record as she, shortlisted for Best Drama Actress for “Ozark” for the third time in a row, has never triumphed for playing Wendy Byrde on the Netflix series and contends for its fourth and final season this year.
This is the first year in which Linney, who was recognized solely for acting for the second and third seasons of “Ozark” in 2019 and 2020, snagged an additional nomination for the gritty crime series: Best Drama Series as a co-executive producer. These dual bids bring her grand total to nine,...

This story about Chris Mundy and his series “Ozark” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
After four seasons of weaving and bobbing their way through money laundering, evading the watchful eye of the FBI and keeping a scary Mexican drug cartel’s deadlier impulses at bay — all while maintaining a dinner-on-the-table nuclear family unit — the Byrde family (led by Emmy nominees Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) finally seemed ready fly the coop in style in the final season of “Ozark.” Or did they? In a recent interview, showrunner Chris Mundy (who is also nominated for best drama and writing) explained. (Spoilers within!)

Screambox original documentary Pennywise: The Story of It uncovered a wealth of insight into the 1990 Stephen King adaptation. Five years of work from co-directors John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser) paid untold dividends for horror fans.
With exclusive interviews with many of the miniseries’ key players – Pennywise himself, Tim Curry, cast members Richard Thomas, Seth Green, Tim Reid, and Emily Perkins, director Tommy Lee Wallace, writer Lawrence D. Cohen, special effects makeup artist Bart Mixon, and more – along with rare materials and never-before-seen footage, even the most knowledgeable viewers will learn a thing or two.
Here are six things I learned from Pennywise: The Story of It.
1. George A. Romero was originally attached to direct.
King and George A. Romero were fans of one another’s output, which ultimately led to their friendship and several collaborations, but both wanted to work together more.

To Kill A Mockingbird, Aaron Sorkin’s hit stage adaptation of the Harper Lee novel currently on a lengthy Covid-prompted hiatus, will not return to Broadway after all, and both Sorkin and director Bartlett Sher are blaming the original lead producer Scott Rudin.
According to emails obtained by The New York Times, Sorkin and Sher notified the cast and crew late yesterday about the show’s cancelation. “At the last moment, Scott reinserted himself as producer and for reasons which are, frankly, incomprehensible to us both, he stopped the play from reopening,” Sorkin and Sher wrote, according to The Times.
Rudin, of course, is the Broadway and Hollywood producer who ostensibly stepped away from all of his productions, including Mockingbird, following allegations of bullying and physical abuse of his staff.
Rudin, according to an email obtained by The Times, informed Sorkin and Sher that his decision “not to bring back...
