Exclusive: Netflix’s new feature Boss Dan Lin has tapped former DreamWorks Animation and Coyote Vs. Acme producer Chris deFaria to consult for the streamer’s animation department, we hear on very good authority.
Lin and deFaria worked together on the mega success of The Lego Movie when the duo were at Warners. Essentially, what is being sorted at Netflix is how to eventize their animation movies more. The streamer, together with Annapurna, saved the Blue Sky axed Disney LGBTQ+ movie Nimona, a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger; the pic wound up getting an Oscar nomination for Animated Feature.
Animation reports into Lin. Karen Toliver serves as VP of Animated Film.
At Warners deFaria worked as the president of Animation and Innovative Technology. He held that position for four years between 2013 and 2017, which included co-oversight of the studio’s Warner Animation Group. While at Warners, deFaria’s credits included Man of Steel,...

It looks like the Coyote vs. Acme movie starring John Cena won’t see the light of day after all. According to a report in TheWrap, the hybrid live-action/animated film hasn’t found a new distributor after Warner Bros. turned down offers from multiple would-be buyers.
This past November, Warner Bros. confirmed it was permanently shelving Coyote vs. Acme for a tax write-off. Following public outcry, the studio reversed course just days later, allowing the filmmakers to shop the project to other distributors.
However, TheWrap reports that Warner Bros. was looking for a hefty asking price, effectively torpedoing any chance of a sale. Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount reportedly submitted “handsome offers” to acquire the movie.
In a “take it or leave it” scenario, Warner Bros. held steadfast in seeking $75 – $80 million — double the amount of $35 – $40 million it would make on the tax write-off — and didn’t take any counteroffers.
All this time,...

Remember that brief moment in November of 2023 where we all thought Warner Bros. wasn't led by a soulless, money-hungry ghoul but by human beings who could see reason and allow "Coyote vs. Acme" to be shopped to other studios rather than delete it from existence? Well, that didn't last long.
In a damning report by TheWrap, it appears David Zaslav, head of Warner Bros. Discovery and eternal enemy of the Animaniacs, has reversed course and decided no one should ever watch the finished film "Coyote vs. Acme" even if other studios were willing to pay money for it. As producer Chris DeFaria told TheWrap, "They just want to get this behind them," referring to what he heard from a Warner Bros. executive in early January. "They want to close the books." According to TheWrap, Warner Bros. won't even announce that they were unable to find a home for the film.

Exclusive: As the Annecy Animation Film Festival gets underway this weekend, Warner Bros’ newly hired President of Feature Animation Bill Damaschke has announced a rebranding of the motion picture division with a focus on filmmakers.
Previously known as Wag, aka Warner Animation Group, the Burbank, CA lot’s feature toon unit will now be known as Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
“It’s honoring the past and rich history of the company. Warner Bros Pictures Animation released movies like Iron Giant, Space Jam, Corpse Bride, Polar Express, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie — benchmark films that broke new ground, new technology, new ways of telling stories and were successful, artistically and commercially. They last in people’s hearts, every one of those films,” said Damaschke about the label, which counts a filmmaker-driven original feature animated canon from such directors as Brad Bird, Tim Burton, George Miller, Robert Zemeckis, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Last editorial, I pondered if the best films in the Amityville Horror franchise are the paired entries. As we cross off the seventh entry, that suspicion holds true. Amityville: A New Generation has decent ambition for a franchise creeping towards double digits; it simply needed a few tweaks in its execution. At the end of the day, the film feels aggressively early 90s direct-to-video horror, slightly better than something like a mid-range Candyman or Hellraiser.
The 1993 film is set in an apartment complex whose residents are an artist collective. The film uses the same formula as The Amityville Curse for its characters (a combination of lovers and friends), as well as It’s About Time and 3-D (a new haunted object). In this case,...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
Despite featuring the most awkward title yet, it’s my pleasure to report that Amityville 1992: It’s About Time is a top-tier entry in the Amityville Horror series.
Thanks primarily to assured direction by Hellbound: Hellraiser 2’s Tony Randel and a wild script from writers Christopher DeFaria and Antonio Toro (based loosely on a book by John G. Jones), the sixth entry in the Amityville series is a genuine delight from top to bottom.
Many of the franchise’s key elements are here: the iconic windows, a widowed character, the dysfunctional family, goopy practical FX, and a new cursed object. Here it’s a clock, which is immediately described by a character as “ugly,” continuing a trend that began with the lamp in The Evil Escapes.

Is a National Animation Museum on the horizon?
On Tuesday, state senator Anthony Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) announced that he helped secure 2.5 million in the 2022-23 California state budget to kickstart an effort to develop a virtual and physical animation museum.
There’s still a long way to go before the project can become a reality. More fundraising will follow, along with outreach to studios and groups including the International Animated Film Society (Asifa-Hollywood), the non-profit that produces the Annie Awards for animation — which separately had been developing its own plans for a museum to celebrate its art form.
One initial idea is to potentially find a space in the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena area, which has long been a center for animation. Burbank has been the home of Walt Disney Animation Studios since 1940, Dreamworks Animation has called Glendale its home since its launch in...

Since DreamWorks Animation got snapped up by Universal, it seems several films have been cancelled. So what's actually happening?
If we imagine that the acquisition of Pixar by Disney was some kind of seismic shift for the Emeryville animation house, then Dreamworks Animation, by comparison, must be living in the red-hot cradle of a hyperactive volcano.
Animated films take so long, from concept to production to release, that recent Dreamworks titles are making their eventual escape from a corporate context which bears little relation to where they were conceived.
The Croods is a particularly good example. It was, originally, going to be a stop-motion film produced at Aardman with a screenplay by John Cleese. Without it ever being cancelled outright, this project continued to evolve, as Dreamworks twisted and turned like a kaleidoscope around it, in to the final product. The plot was different. The characters were different.

Riding on rave reviews and huge anticipation around the globe, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ Mad Max: Fury Road thundered at the worldwide box office with an opening weekend of more than $109.4 million, making it the #1 new release at the global box office.
It is also the biggest opening ever for director George Miller and is already the highest grossing of all the “Mad Max” films. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
George Miller’s return to the world of “Mad Max” was a major draw overseas, where it earned an aggregate estimated $65 million in 68 territories on 16,900 screens. While live-blogging the Oscars you really don't get too much of a chance to take in all the acceptance speeches. I catch a few moments here and there, and I can pretty much tell when the air is being let out of the room as well as those moments where someone is really capturing the moment. What I've put together below are the five speeches where I think the winner really managed to stand-out. I also love the true excitement coupled with the words chosen in these speeches. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave, especially, seemed to capture the room with her infectious smile as much as Jennifer Lawrence a year before, not to forget her brother, Peter, who photobombed Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie and is clearly someone very special in Lupita's life and she in his. The only truly strange thing about these speeches is John Ridley and Steve McQueen failing...

Yes! Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own. Steve McQueen, you charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this position. This has been the joy of my life. You’ve never heard a score quite like this. Director Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity is nothing akin to a sci-fi fantasy world, but rather depicts the stark realities of being marooned in the harshest environment known to mankind. It is a real game changer. Audiences will be given the illusion of being in space in ways that are both totally convincing and utterly visceral.
The film opened at #1, had a record setting $55 million opening weekend in the U.S. and is set for a November debut in the United Kingdom. Gravity premiered to critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival with screenings also held at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. The film will play this week among the highly anticipated Galas at the BFI London Film Festival.

“Amityville: A New Generation” (1993)
Directed By: John Murlowski
Written By: Christopher DeFaria & Antonio Toro
Starring: Ross Patridge (Keyes Terry), Julia Nickson (Suki), Terry O’Quinn (Detective Clark), Lala Sloatman (Llanie), David Naughton (Dick Cutler), Barbara Howard (Janet Cutler), Jack Orend (Franklin Bonner), Richard Roundtree (Pauli), Robert Russler (Ray)
After seeing this films predecessor “Amityville 1992: It’s About Time” I had pretty high hopes for this movie as I felt that film at least gave some life back in to this aging franchise. When I was done watching “A New Generation” I was a bit let down. While this movie follows the same theme as the fourth and sixth movies, it is clearly the weakest in terms of keeping the story coherent.
The story involves a young man Keyes Terry who is given a mirror by a by a person he sees randomly on the side of the road.

Remember the 2003 film Open Water where 2 scuba divers were left stranded and adrift in the ocean surrounded by sharks? Only this time, it’s two astronauts stranded and adrift in outer space running out of oxygen in director Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity.

Gravity is a highly anticipated film for me. I’ve been hearing about the film for over a year and I’m a fan of Cuarón’s work. I’m also genuinely excited that his work is being talked about and he has the highest possible audience looking at him when this film releases. Children of Men was simply a masterpiece of sci-fi drama. Gravity seems like a simple premise but this also gives Cuarón a great advantage to inject his style and technical prowess into a film to make it extraordinary. Typically, I don’t like showing off clips of a film out of context but this single take scene just needs to be seen.

In the wake of the mass layoffs and bankruptcy filing of the VFX house Rhythm & Hues at the same time it was winning the Oscar for the film Life of Pi, the entire future of the visual effects industry has come under scrutiny — even as Rhythm & Hues recovers under new ownership. The question of the company’s crash-and-burn while creating award-winning work led off a Produced By panel this morning entitled “The Unlocked Picture: Global Opportunities in VFX and 3D Conversion,” where the consensus was that the R&H situation was both an anomaly and a harbinger of VFX industry issues that won’t soon be going away. “It’s a tough business and changing business, and we’re right in the middle of a very tumultuous time,” said Chris DeFaria, Exec VP of digital production, animation and visual effects for Warner Bros. In an effort to catch up with the animated films being generated at other studios, Warner Bros has formed what it calls a feature animation creative consortium. They’ve identified a core group of filmmakers to form a Justice League for the production of cartoons. The team’s goal will be to generate one animated film per year. John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, Nicholas Stoller, Phil Lord and Chris Miller and Jared Stern are the first directors in the program. They aren’t exclusive to the studio, and will develop animated projects along with the live action films they direct. Stoller has written Storks, which will be directed by Doug Sweetland for 2015 release; Requa and Ficarra will spearhead Smallfoot, from an original idea by Despicable Me‘s Sergio Pablos, who’ll direct for 2016 release. Los Angeles — There's no mistaking the similarities. A childhood on a dusty farm, a love of fast vehicles, a rebel who battles an overpowering empire – George Lucas is the hero he created, Luke Skywalker.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.
