The Ben Affleck-Justin Timberlake vehicle "Runner Runner" was a bummer bummer at the box office, scraping by with a $7.7 million opening and scoring a dismal 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. But according to a new story in The Hollywood Reporter, that disappointment wasn't much of a surprise for those involved in the production.
Anonymous sources told THR that "the poker thriller was in such bad shape that Affleck helped bring in his go-to film editor, William Goldenberg, to help credited editor Jeff McEvoy salvage the movie." Goldenberg won an Oscar for his work on Affleck's Best Picture winner "Argo," and THR reports that the editor "is said to have improved the final cut of the film."
But ultimately, the movie's problems were too many to overcome.
While studio New Regency claims that it was their idea, not Affleck's, to bring in Goldenberg, THR writes that "sources close to...

Despite starring above-the-line A-listers Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, New Regency’s $30 million poker thriller Runner Runner debuted last week to a paltry $7.7 million at the box office; leaving industry insiders scratching their collective heads as to how such a sure thing could misfire so badly.
A high-profile film (with two of the industry’s biggest stars) which fails to open to at least $20 million over opening weekend is definitely cause for alarm and has executives at 20th Century Fox (the film’s distributor) and Warner Brothers (Affleck’s Batman Vs. Superman home) scrambling for answers.
The Hollywood Reporter suggests that the film was in crisis mode from the get-go; and was in “such bad shape” that Affleck opted to bring in his long-time editing associate William Goldenberg (Argo, Gone Baby Gone) to help salvage the film and lend an assist to the already contracted editor Jeff McEvoy. But even...

Last week, "Runner Runner" dropped into theaters, promising the team-up of Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck—with the latter playing a rare villain role—in a thriller about online gambling gone awry. Stars? Check. Hot subject matter? Sure. But it didn't add up to a hit, with the movie crushed in the wake of "Gravity," opening to just over $7 million and earning scathing reviews to go with it. But were people behind the scenes trying to fix it? According to THR, Affleck brought in William Goldenberg, the Academy Award-winning editor on his three directorial efforts, to assist the credited Jeff McEvoy in assembling a cut. It's not clear exactly what was improved—nothing could've really saved what was ultimately a fairly cliched and uninvolving story—but Goldenberg is said to have at least made things a bit better (which again, seems like a relative term). But were there even more machinations going on?...

Scoring terrible reviews from both critics and audiences, not to mention a dismal $7.7 million opening weekend total, the new Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake-led thriller "Runner Runner" has already been written off as a bomb.
With a fairly tight $30 million budget, it won't be too much of a financial disaster for New Regency though - especially as international grosses have already helped make its budget back after one week.
However, it has now come to light that the film could've been far worse than it actually is.
THR reports that at one point, the movie was reportedly in such bad shape that Affleck brought in "Argo" editor William Goldenberg to help credited editor Jeff McEvoy salvage what they could.
Goldenberg was said to have improved the final cut, even so the film only managed a 'C' CinemaScore, an 8% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 37/100 on Metacritic.
There were numerous issues with the film.

A version of this story first appeared in the Oct. 18 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The dismal $7.7 million debut of director Brad Furman's Runner Runner, starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, wasn't exactly a surprise to those involved in the $30 million-budgeted New Regency film. Sources tell THR that at one point, the poker thriller was in such bad shape that Affleck helped bring in his go-to film editor, William Goldenberg, to help credited editor Jeff McEvoy salvage the movie. (Regency insiders insist Goldenberg was their idea.) Goldenberg, who won an Oscar for Argo
