Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Anchor Bay Entertainment was a major player in the horror world, giving DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more. Then things changed, and eventually Anchor Bay got folded into Lionsgate Home Entertainment… but now Deadline reports that the Anchor Bay Entertainment label is being revived, and the revival is starting off with the releases of puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen!
Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are behind the return of Anchor Bay Entertainment, and they’re planning to use the label to bring the world “genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics,...

A familiar label for horror fans is getting a resurrection. Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new iteration of Anchor Bay Entertainment with the goal to curate a new library of films for distribution, projects that range from new release genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
The new launch comes with a pair of acquisition titles: puppet horror film Abruptio and documentary Dinner with Leatherface.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck in a press release statement. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.

In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

A number of lost souls find refuge in a small motel in the middle of nowhere, it’s only distinguishing characteristic being the ruins of an old Mystery Spot—a long-dead roadside attraction with strange metaphysical powers. Everyone at the Mystery Spot will be affected by its unique properties, but only some will survive its reality-shattering implications.
Apparently squeezing this one in in-between Vfw and The Leech, Graham Skipper makes another welcome genre appearance in Mystery Spot which, early on, certainly lives up to the name. Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.

The Shining‘s Shelley Duvall is making her return to acting after a twenty year hiatus in the upcoming creature feature The Forest Hills – and Michael and Jessica Kolence of the YouTube channel Grimm Life Collective happen to be producers on that movie, which opened the door to them getting the chance to spend the day with Duvall. As part of that day, they conducted an interview with Duvall, and the video of that interview can be seen at the bottom of this article. It’s a very nice, sweet interview, as the Kolences express a lot of love for Duvall’s work as they discuss projects like Popeye, Faerie Tale Theatre, and of course, The Shining.

A couple weeks ago, we saw a poster for the upcoming creature feature The Forest Hills that showed the character being played in the film by Chiko Mendez (Smothered by Mothers). Now a couple more character posters have been unveiled, and these ones show the characters being played by Edward Furlong (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and The Shining‘s Shelley Duvall. Those posters can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The Forest Hills is the first movie Duvall has worked on in twenty years. The trailer makes it clear that the creature in this feature is a werewolf.

‘Santa Claws’ – A Sleazy, Cheesy Holiday Oddity from ‘Night of the Living Dead’ Co-Writer John Russo
While George A. Romero was able to parlay the success of Night of the Living Dead into a career in the film industry, co-writer John A. Russo never quite found his footing. Any filmmaker would be lucky to have a movie a fraction as impactful as Night of the Living Dead on their resume, but Russo’s cinematic imprint beyond that was minimal.
In addition to publishing numerous books and producing The Return of the Living Dead and the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, Russo wrote and directed a handful of independent horror movies over the years. Although they failed to reach a wide audience, he generated a few low-budget cult classics, including the 1996 Christmas slasher Santa Claws.
Playing directly to horror fans, Santa Claws strives to rebut the notion that scantily-clad scream queens are nothing more than “brainless bimbos.” Debbie Rochon stars as Raven Quinn, a horror...

Last week, we learned that The Shining‘s Shelley Duvall is returning to the screen in the creature feature The Forest Hills, the first movie she has made in twenty years. Shelley Duvall has returned to the big screen with a cameo role in director Scott Goldberg’s The Forest Hills, which also stars Edward Furlong, Chiko Mendez and Dee Wallace, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Duvall had break out roles in the 1970s in Robert Altman’s Brewster McCloud and Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, where she briefly, yet memorably played a Rolling Stone reporter, before appearing in the role of Wendy Torrance alongside Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining. This marks the first role in 20 years for the actor, who last year spoke about her legacy in a profile for THR.

Jon Keeyes is a name that has popped up a lot in genre cinema discussion recently, mainly due to his film The Harrowing gaining traction within the horror community. I’m guessing that’s the reason that Wild Eye chose to go back into Keeyes’ oeuvre for their latest release, Doom Room, which was originally made back in 2013 under the title of Nightmare Box.
The film sees a woman, the girl with no eyes who’s oblivious to her surroundings (Katie Kensit), the pious man of god (James Simmons) who belittles our heroine for her sexuality, and then there’s the husband and wife (Matthew Tompkins and Debbie Rochon respectively) who take our “Jane Doe” on a psycho-sexual S&M trip…...

With the highly-anticipated horror Death House being released in cinemas on March 2nd, I got a chance to ask filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman about how he got into film making, what we can expect and his favourite moments during filming.
How did you first get into film making?
I got into filmmaking because I made the mistake of going to Yale University. I was heading to doing something useful with my life like teaching or social work, but my roommate was a film fanatic. Our beds were in a very small bedroom, they were head to toe and at night I would inhale his stinking feet and I sort of caught the Aroma du Troma. He ran the Yale Film Society, so I would drift in and suddenly I started watching the screen and I had no idea that film was such an art, I didn’t even know there was a director for a movie.

With the highly-anticipated horror Death House being released in cinemas on February 23rd 2018, I got a chance to speak with actress Debbie Rochon about how she first got into acting, her character Leatherlace and the importance of the film as a serving memory to Gunnar Hansen.
How did you first get into acting?
Although I was way-deep background in elementary school musicals (I couldn’t sing) it wasn’t until I was a pre-teen landing a role of a featured extra in the punk rock cult classic Ladies and Gentlemen: The Fabulous Stains (1982) did I really find my calling. I was homeless at the time, but it gave me great purpose. I landed a couple seriously crappy day jobs even though I was underage, they really didn’t check those things in 1979/80. Saved for a couple years and moved from the grimy underbelly in Vancouver to the openly sleazy but...

As a desperate ploy to get people to like me. In my experience, entertainers begin entertaining either because they think very highly of themselves, or because they think very lowly of themselves. The latter seem, on the whole, to be more successful than the former.
In your career you have become synonymous with horror having played so many notorious characters. Do you enjoy playing the villain or are these just the roles which you found most interesting?

It’s something of an understatement to say that the work of poet and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe has had a lasting effect on the horror genre. Especially when it comes to horror cinema in particular. It’s not so long ago that we had the likes of P.O.E.: Poetry of Eerie and it’s sequel Project of Evil, David DeCoteaus’s The Pit and the Pendulum, and the animated anthology Extraordinary Tales; and now comes Tales of Poe – which adapts Poe’s short stories The Tell Tale Heart, Cask of Amontillado and Dreams.

In the history of the horror genre, there has been no shortage of movies adapted from the great Edgar Allan Poe. From the classic 1935 Universal adaptation of “The Raven," to the brilliant gothic Roger Corman/Vincent Price collaborations of the 1960s, and even through Stuart Gordon’s 1991 filming of “The Pit and the Pendulum” for Full Moon Features, there’s not a corner of horror that hasn’t been touched by the works of Poe. This makes any new adaptation of the author’s work challenging, though, because so many horror fans may carry a “been there, seen that” mentality towards the umpteenth retelling of “The Tell-Tale Heart.” It is to the credit of directors Bart Mastronardi and Alan Rowe Kelly that their new anthology, aptly titled Tales of Poe, offers a new spin on an author whose work has been brought to the screen for nearly 100 years.

[Guest author Christopher Lombardo of Really Awful Movies celebrates Canada Day by looking back at three backwoods Canadian horror films.] In the ’70s, Canadian tax loopholes spurred growth in domestic horror films, providing a more reliable low-cost means of recouping one’s investment in a frequently fickle business. A few, like Martin Scorsese’s favorite The Changeling, were critical darlings, while the bulk of them were regarded as cheap government-funded trash. A prominent Canadian critic famously called Cronenberg’s Shivers “an atrocity, a disgrace to everyone connected with it” in a jeremiad titled “You Should Know How Bad This Film Is. After All, You Paid for It.”
Luckily, for those of us invested in such things artistically if not financially (unless you count our tax dollars), we got gems such as Happy Birthday to Me, My Bloody Valentine, Black Christmas (1974), and many others.
The “tax shelter” era, in addition to straight-ahead slashers, also gave us lesser-known films that exposed class divisions—punishing urban interlopers who lacked the necessary survival skills to thrive in the wilderness.
