Actor Nathan Fillion has worked with a few notable guest stars during his time with The Rookie cast. But there was one guest star who he surprised with his new attitude.
Nathan Fillion | Erica Parise/Getty Images This former ‘Castle’ star was shocked by how much Nathan Fillion changed on ‘The Rookie’
Fillion has been a part of some of television’s most critically praised shows. Before The Rookie, he was known for playing millionaire author Richard Castle in the titular series Castle. Many of Fillion’s former Castle co-stars have made small appearances on The Rookie, from Jon Huertas to Tamala Jones.
Jones, who played a medical examiner on the hit series, portrayed a wife to a former rap star on The Rookie. She was more than excited to team up with her former Castle co-star. But she was surprised at Fillion’s newfound maturity on set.
“That was so great.

As the news gets darker and more depressing, a triumphant “against the odds” inspired by true events underdog story may be just the cure for the late Winter doldrums. And that’s exactly what this week’s new movie promises…and pretty much delivers. It’s an ode to the “help your neighbor” spirit of small-town America (not that it’s completely absent in the bustling cities). Plus there’s a bit of spirituality (right in the title) along with some folks overcoming their own personal struggles. And as a bonus, this marks a most welcome return of an actress to the big screen, in a wide release, after earning a second Oscar almost twenty years ago. In a new “real-life” role this extraordinary actress becomes the leader of a group of Ordinary Angels.
The film’s story doesn’t start with her, though. Instead, we’re in the hospital...

Review: When I first saw the trailer for Ordinary Angels, I wrote it off without a second thought as another faith-based drama designed to tug at the heartstrings and reinforce the unlimited power of God. In recent years, there has been a surge in movies like this; few have risen above the minimal viable bar for them to be considered watchable by mainstream audiences. To my surprise, the film is not an overt case for Christ,...

With a true story centered on everyday people pulling off extraordinary feats, “Ordinary Angels” can’t help but embrace the sentimentality at its core. It’s baked into its DNA, and is the reason why this compelling, heartstring-pulling drama made it to the big screen 30 years after taking place — in a time when we too are searching for light in a bleak world. Yet what lifts the picture beyond average inspirational fluff is the way director Jon Gunn and company control the slow release of its sweetness so as not to overpower. This technique, though forgivably manipulative, works to grand effect and, by the end, even cynics will be won over by the human kindness on display.

‘Ordinary Angels’ Review: Hilary Swank’s Passionate Performance Drives True Faith Based Family Drama
Lionsgate’s collaboration with faith based movie producers Kingdom Story Company has reaped boxoffice rewards for both, and with their latest, Ordinary Angels, the inspiring true story of a small Kentucky town that comes together in a historic snowstorm in order to transport a 3-year-old girl to an Omaha hospital for a life-saving liver transplant, they have another surefire heartfelt film tailor-made for audiences looking for a little uplift. This actually would have made a perfect Christmas season release but has been delayed for several months, now opening in the same February corridor where Kingdom’s surprise hit, Jesus Revolution did well last year. Midwest crowds will especially respond to a never-say-never tale that is about bringing people together, not tearing them apart in this age of division.

Exclusive: The Kingdom Studios and Lionsgate drama Ordinary Angels starring 2x Oscar winner Hilary Swank is departing from its Oct. 13 theatrical release date as AMC’s Taylor Swift: The New Eras Tour looks to open to at least $70M off a female-heavy audience.
Universal’s The Exorcist: The Believer seeing the crazy amount of presales at $37M+ yesterday opted to go a week earlier on Oct. 6, which is much richer release date where Joker, and Venom have launched.
No bother for Ordinary Angels which is Tbd in regards to its release date. Lionsgate runs an entirely grass roots campaign on these pics, so there’s complete flexibility and no wasted media or P&a costs. Furthermore, we understand, that Swank wants to promote the pic. So, potentially waiting out the SAG-AFTRA strike is prudent for a smaller feature such as this.

"I have to make it! This is our last chance. If we don't take it, Michelle dies!" Lionsgate has debuted a new trailer for Ordinary Angels, a religious drama based on a real medical emergency and struggling family. Arriving in theaters nationwide starting this October, sticking with this date despite the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. Inspired by the true story of a hairdresser who single-handedly rallies an entire community to help a widowed father save the life of his critically ill daughter who desperately needs a liver transplant. "Faith can make the impossible possible," is the tagline. This is leaning heavy on the religious side of the story, which means they will get the attention of many faithful Americans. The movie stars Hilary Swank as Sharon Steves, with Alan Ritchson, Nancy Travis, Tamala Jones, & Amy Acker, plus Skywalker Hughes and Emily Mitchell as the kids. This is as cheesy as they come!

"I'm good at plenty of things, taking 'no' for an answer ain't one of 'em." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for Ordinary Angels, a religious drama based on a real medical emergency and struggling family. They're releasing this exclusively in theaters in October – it's uncommon nowadays to see an early preview for a movie so far from release. Inspired by the incredible true story of a hairdresser who single-handedly rallies an entire community to help a widowed father save the life of his critically ill young daughter who desperately needs a liver transplant. "Faith can make the impossible possible," is the tagline (ugh - well they definitely know their audience). Nathan Fillion has appeared in two beloved ABC shows — Castle and The Rookie. Castle aired for eight seasons on the network and ended in 2016. The Rookie premiered in 2018 and is in the middle of airing its fifth season. And Fillion is dedicated to paying homage to his previous show in his new one. Unfortunately, fans shouldn’t anticipate one Castle star to appear in The Rookie.

One of the main reasons Castle was so popular during its heyday was because of the “will they/won’t they” slow-burn relationship between Richard Castle and Kate Beckett, played by Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic.
Of course, everyone also loved the other side characters, especially Jon Huertas’ Javier Esposito and Seamus Dever’s Kevin Ryan.

In Thembi Banks’ “Young. Wild. Free.,” a visually confident, shape-shifting yet sometimes wandering coming-of-age tale, nothing comes easy to Los Angeles teen Brandon. Carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders at home and school, he is on the final day of his employment when we first meet him in the back office of a grimy burger joint. As his unsympathetic boss fires him bluntly, with a side of mockery, we pick up that Brandon has been involved in an altercation, and is thus being shown the door. It’s a scene that Banks orchestrates with vibrant and stylish intrigue.
Tasteful, vivid colors permeate “Young. Wild. Adds Jones, “Marlow holds some resentment towards [Dani] because of how things were when the mother was still here. And then afterwards, Marlow feels that Dani had more important things to do other than family things.” In a divine twist, the sisters’ recently-deceased older brother Robert (Mykelti Williamson) holds the reconciliation key that could help heal...

As we all mourn the end of the Halloween season and brace ourselves for the seemingly unending parade of holidays based on familial obligations or gross displays of capitalism, November is here to serve as a little respite. Many of the horror movies that disappeared off streaming platforms to try and snag some extra Halloween funds in October are returning to their respective platforms, but the trickling in of cheesy Christmas fare is also coming in fast.
Fortunately, there's a massive amount of old favorites and exciting new titles trying to beat the holiday havoc, and we've got five between Hulu and Disney+ that you would be wise to check out. Vince Staples, Xavier Mills, Karen Obilom, Melvin Gregg, and Essence Renae will star in the pilot, with Richard T. Jones and Tamala Jones set to reprise their roles as Slim and Tanya respectively from the film.
Rick Famuyiwa, who wrote and directed the film, will direct and executive produce the pilot. It was ordered at Showtime in August 2021. The show is described as an honest look at friendship and dating from the perspective of three young Black males born and raised in the gentrifying L.A. suburb of Inglewood. The trio’s struggles to balance fatherhood, ambition and loyalty force them to question if they are growing apart, or closer together.

Jason's terror reign is as over as quickly as it started.
Bailey got her life back, and they managed to put her future ex-husband behind bars on The Rookie Season 4 Episode 11. The hour also had a Castle alum guest-star, minus an actual reunion.
And to shake things up, we learned that Harper is pregnant.
The story arc with Bailey's husband concluded with him getting sent to prison for eight years, and after a few hiccups, everything is wrapped up in a neat bow.
The momentum and intrigue of The Rookie Season 4 Episode 10 petered out during this installment as the hour rushed through the resolution of an issue that should've taken far longer to settle.

Castle has a new address. Lifetime has set an October 5 premiere date for the latest exclusive syndicated run of the crime dramedy starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic.
The series will play at 2 p.m. Tuesdays starting next week and will continue through November. It will go on hiatus when Lifetime begins its annual It’s a Wonderful Lifetime holiday movie event, then will return in January.
Castle, which originally aired on ABC from 2009-16, stars Fillion as famous mystery novelist Richard Castle, who connects with the NYPD when he is enlisted to help solve a series of copycat murders ripped from the pages of his Derek Storm novels. Suffering from writer’s block and realizing that working with the police might give him some new ideas for his next book, Castle finds himself paired with Detective Kate Beckett (Katic). IMDb TV, Amazon’s free streaming service, is not proceeding with picking up new seasons of canceled ABC drama series For Life and Rebel. The decision was made after the streamer evaluated the performance of the two shows’ existing seasons on the AVOD platform.
Season 1 and 2 of For Life became available on IMDb TV at the end of June through a deal with Sony Pictures TV; Rebel’s first season joined it on the service two weeks later under a pact with ABC Signature. Both agreements included an option for a new season order based on how the existing seasons performed on the platform, with the cast of both series available to continue.
Finding a new home for a canceled broadcast series is difficult and rarely successful, so the arrangements with IMDb TV were considered long shots, but TV studios often exhaust all avenues for their shows and talent before they throw in the towel.

The first season of Rebel, which was canceled by ABC in May, is now available on IMDb TV, Amazon’s free streaming service.
I hear the agreement between IMDb TV and lead Rebel studio ABC Signature includes an option for a second-season order based on how Season 1 performs on the platform. The studio still has the cast, led by Katey Sagal, under options, I hear, making a second season a realistic possibility.
IMDb TV recently made a similar arrangement with Sony Pictures TV for another canceled ABC drama, For Life, whose first two seasons are currently streaming on the service. That series, starring Nicholas Pinnock, also is eying a potential new season on the AVOD platform if the trial run of its existing seasons does well.

On Friday, ABC opted not to renew five titles, but the most unexpected was Katey Sagal-starrer Rebel from Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff. Now somewhat distanced from the news, Sagal and Vernoff broke their silence on the sudden cancellation, which came five episodes into Rebel‘s freshman run.
“The abrupt announcement that there would be no season 2 based on the response from our airings came a shock and a heartbreak,” Sagal wrote on Instagram. “Things take time to catch on. Rebel tells the story of a woman who speaks up for what is right, the show has heart and purpose, funny and tears, and we, the cast, are all scratching our heads at the reversal of support from ABC.”

In Rebel, ABC/ Disney Television Studios’ freshman drama, we revisit a new version of a woman we’ve seen on screen before: Erin Brockovich. Starring Katey Sagal as Annie ‘Rebel’ Bello—a character loosely based on who Brockovich is today—the show follows the renegade underdog advocate as she negotiates the takedown of all things corrupt.
Creator, EP and showrunner Krista Vernoff explained during Deadline’s Contenders Television awards-season event that the genesis of the series began with a first meeting with Brockovich. “I got a call to meet Erin Brockovich and I ran as fast as I could to my car,” she said. “We talked for two and-a-half hours without taking a breath, and I left and I knew what the show was and I had to write it.”
For Sagal, her enjoyment of the character of Rebel began with Vernoff’s “amazing” script. “Krista wrote a great, well-rounded,...

Five episodes into its freshman run, ABC’s Katey Sagal-starring drama Rebel has been canceled.
It was clearly a tough decision for the network because the series, inspired by the life of activist Erin Brockovich, comes from ABC’s most valuable drama showrunner, Krista Vernoff, who is shepherding the network’s top two scripted series, Grey’s Anatomy and spinoff Station 19.
Both Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 were recently renewed for next season, with Vernoff set to continue at the helm of the duo. Rebel, Vernoff’s first series as a creator, has underperformed in the ratings despite having ABC’s highest-rated series, Grey’s Anatomy, as a lead-in. But there was speculation that the new show’s pedigree and strong cast could earn it more time to find a wider audience.

ABC on Thursday gaveled to order the series premiere of Rebel, the legal drama created by Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff and starring Katey Sagal. From Peg Bundy (“Married… With Children”) to Gemma Teller Morrow (“Sons of Anarchy”), Katey Sagal has played strong-willed characters before. But she doesn’t believe she’s ever played someone like Annie “Rebel” Bello.
“I know I’ve played some very hard women, but she’s hard for all of the right reasons. Her reasoning is to empower people to stand up and talk,” Sagal tells Variety.
In the new ABC drama “Rebel,” from “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Krista Vernoff and inspired by the real life of Erin Brockovich, Sagal’s title character is a blue-collar legal advocate — who doesn’t actually hold a law degree. In the premiere episode, though, she throws herself up against big corporation Stonemore Medical in order to fight for those who have been harmed by autoimmune symptoms from the company’s synthetic heart valve.
“She is incensed by the thought that somebody is getting screwed...

Abigail Spencer is reuniting with Krista Vernoff, the showrunner of Grey's Anatomy.
ABC announced Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that Spencer is joining the cast of forthcoming drama series Rebel.
Spencer will recur as Misha, “a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon who has a painful romantic history with Nate (Fear the Walking Dead‘s Kevin Zegers), but can’t resist getting involved with studying the Stonemore heart valve for fear that she may have inadvertently harmed hundreds of patients,” reads the character description.
The series is inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich.
Annie ‘Rebel’ Bello (Sagal) is a blue-collar legal advocate without a law degree on the series.
She’s a funny, messy, brilliant and fearless woman who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves.
When Rebel applies herself to a fight she believes in, she will win at almost any cost.

“I feel like we’ve made a show that is going to offer people some light in the darkness and some humor and some connection and some inspiration to understand that there’s always more you can do,” said Krista Vernoff creator and executive producer of ABC’s new Erin Brockovich-inspired series, Rebel.
Vernoff was joined at today’s TCA presentation by stars Katey Sagal, Andy Garcia, John Corbett, James Lesure, Lex Scott Davis, Tamala Jones, Ariela Barer, Kevin Zegers, and Sam Palladio as well as executive producer Erin Brockovich, who described the experience of watching her story on screen as “sureal”
“It’s surreal, but it’s also so fantastic and a release to see we’re not afraid to be imperfect. We’re not afraid to show you passion. We’re not afraid to be wrong,” said Brockovich.
