Martha Stewart didn’t talk to CNN for a new original documentary series the news outlet has produced about her. But she’s still the star of the show.
“The Many Lives of Martha Stewart” is a four-part series produced by CNN Studios, a division devoted to longer-form and enterprise programming in the wake of a strategic decision made in 2022 to scale back big ambitions to compete in the documentary arena. A good chunk of that work was scrapped after Warner Bros. Discovery, a big player in the world of cost-conscious reality programming, took over CNN, and installed a leader, Chris Licht, who had a mandate to pare operations. Months later, CNN would win an Oscar for a documentary...

ABC’s The View still hasn’t had a man as one of the permanent hosts, but talk show personality Ross Mathews claimed that he got very close.
Mathews, who made a name as an intern and a correspondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, went on to make regular appearances as a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and as a panelist on Chelsea Lately.
He’s starred on Celebrity Big Brother and had his own short-lived talk show Hello Ross! And Mathews is currently a regular on The Drew Barrymore Show.
Other men like Mario Cantone made regular appearances in the host chair. But Mathews claims he was seriously considered for the cast permanently and even made a deal until network executives had other plans.
Ross Mathews was a huge Barbara Walters fan before ‘The View’
“The View was really fascinating,” Mathews said on the Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef podcast.

CNN keeps feeding the mouths that bite it.
As Warner Bros. Discovery has orchestrated massive changes and cuts to the popular news giant, a stream of producers, anchors and executives have left — some of their own volition, and many of them not. But no matter the case, a growing number of these now-former CNN die-hards are being scooped up by rivals including MSNBC, ABC News and CBS News.
CBS News on Wednesday announced it had lined up Lisa Ling as a contributor. The veteran journalist spent eight years at CNN leading viewers through interesting issues as host of the documentary series, This Is Life,” which was cancelled amid a cutback of original programming that uses outside partners. ABC News on Wednesday announced that Brooke Bower, who had been managing editor of CNN Politics, was joining as executive producer of the Sunday politics show “This Week.”

Before CNN, Ling was host and executive producer of Our America for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN, and was host of National Geographic Ultimate Explorer. Legendary journalist Barbara Walters came up with a novel idea in the late 1990s: to create a talk show consisting of a panel of different women from different backgrounds to discuss the stories of the day. It eventually became The View, which launched on ABC in August 1997. But although she was the mastermind behind The View‘s creation, Walters was reportedly unceremoniously showed the door, just as several co-hosts have experienced over the years.

On December 30, 2022, legendary journalist and interviewer Barbara Walters died at the age of 93. She changed the landscape for women in the industry, became the highest-paid TV journalist, and took her "women's interest" stories on "The Today Show" and turned it into a co-hosting position — a first for a woman. She also became the first female co-anchor of "ABC Evening News." Later on, in 1997, Walters created, produced, and served as a co-host for the ABC talk show "The View," which gave voices to women from different walks of life and different generations. Now that show will honor its founder with a dedicated special, according to a post from the Instagram account for "The View."

CNN will “no longer rely” on commissioning longform projects from outside partners, signaling that the news juggernaut will pull back on original documentary series and films like “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and the critically hailed “Navalny.”
“Our long-term plan will no longer rely on commissioned projects with outside partners,” CEO Chris Licht wrote in a memo sent to staff on Friday. “This was a very difficult decision to make, and it was based, in large part, on the ever-increasing cost of commissioning third-party premium content. However, I want to be clear that longform content remains an important pillar of our programming.”

Food gurus like Anthony Bourdain and Stanley Tucci will no longer figure as prominently in the recipe for programming at CNN.
The pair are among the celebrities who helped pioneer a winning new formula at the outlet: Take viewers to places they couldn’t normally get to, add some beautiful shots of food or culture and, voila! The news outlet secured a new foothold in documentaries and docu-series that won the attention of top advertisers and could be played again and again.
Now, according to a memo from the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s top executive, such ingredients are being put back on the shelf.
CNN is pulling back on production of the original series and films that have been a staple of its programming over the past decade. Series like Borudain’s “Parts Unknown” Tucci’s “Searching for Italy” and W. Kamau Bell’s “United Shades of America...

The biennial gala returned for the first time since 2018 and kicked-off with a heart-warming moment of appreciation for Chla healthcare workers. On the red carpet outside the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles gala Saturday night, the organization’s president and CEO Paul Viviano explained how, if this were a typical event, the musical headliner would deliver a “low-ley” performance of two or three songs. But this year’s installment, held at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, was anything but routine.
That was all thanks to Justin Timberlake as the 41-year-old crooner not only agreed to show up, but also to put on a show — a 40-minute mini-concert of 10 songsm including his tracks “Suit & Tie,” “Señorita” and “Can’t Fight the Feeling,” mixed in with classic hits and soul classics from artists like Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Bill Withers and Sam Cooke.
“We’re privileged to have him,” Viviano gushed of Timberlake’s showing at the event, Chla’s first in-person fundraiser in three years.

On Friday, Oct. 7, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their Archewell Foundation is teaming up with the Ving Project (an organization that's all about inspiring teens to give back) to give 1 million to inspiring women who have "defied life's hardships," according to the official press release. US-based teens between the ages of 14 and 18 are being asked to nominate a woman who has inspired them. If they're chosen, the nominator will be able to give the woman a 1,000 grant to help them further their goals.
The project is inspired by the Duchess of Sussex's "Archetypes" podcast, which is all about breaking down stereotypes associated with women. "Two things that bring me great joy are supporting women and the spirit of giving," Markle said in the announcement. "With the return of 'Archetypes,' Archewell Foundation and Ving have come together to create the perfect combination of these loves."

Meghan Markle is back in her “Archetypes” hosting chair after the podcast went on hiatus following the death of Queen Elizabeth.
The new episode, which Spotify dropped on Tuesday, features actress, activist and comedian Margaret Cho and journalist Lisa Ling, who break down the archetype of the “Dragon Lady”, a prejudiced stigma many Asian women are forced to navigate — something that Markle admitted took her awhile to realize while growing up.
“Movies like ‘Austin Powers’ and ‘Kill Bill’ — they presented these caricatures of women of Asian descent as over-sexualized or aggressive,” Markle said, noting that both films are just two examples of “many” problematic portrayals.
“This toxic stereotyping of women of Asian descent… this doesn’t just end once the credits roll,” Markle added before welcoming Cho, who explained that the archetype stems from the “fantasy of Orientalism.”

Meghan Markle’s popular podcast Archetypes will return to Spotify on Tuesday, Oct. 4, following its pause during the mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II, Spotify has confirmed.
The new episode is expected to feature conversations with comic and Fire Island star Margaret Cho and journalist Lisa Ling. The topic of the conversation will be Asian American tropes in the entertainment industry.
Markle paused the podcast following the death on Sept. 8 of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen’s funeral was held on Sept. 19 at Westminster Abbey.
Markle, the wife of the Queen’s grandson Prince Harry, debuted the podcast in August, overtaking – at least temporarily – the usual Spotify U.S. frontrunner Joe Rogan on the Spotify charts. Produced by Archewell Audio in partnership with Spotify’s Gimlet Media, Archetypes debuted in August nearly two years after Markle and Prince Harry, under their Archewell Audio banner, signed an exclusive multiyear deal with Spotify.

Meghan Markle's "Archetypes" podcast isn't shying away from important and challenging conversations about being a women, race, and culture. This week (Aug. 30), the Spotify audio series featured pop icon Mariah Carey as the Duchess of Sussex's second guest, whom she interviewed about the "duality of diva" and negative connotations that come with the label. During their conversation, Markle and Carey also found common ground in growing up biracial and touched on their personal experiences.
"I think for us, it's very different because we're light-skinned. You're not treated as a Black woman. You're not treated as a white woman. You sort of fit in between."
"I didn't fit in anywhere at all," Carey recalled of her childhood, with Markle noting for listeners that the singer "grew up poor in a mixed-race family when interracial marriages were pretty rare in the US." "I remember being in school in this predominantly white...

Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast was number one on Spotify in its first 24 hours last week, overtaking usual U.S. frontrunner The Joe Rogan Experience.
The premiere episode featured Serena Williams, and it was announced that Markle will be joined on tomorrow’s show by Mariah Carey.
That’s a powerhouse guest list for a launch, and a cover story for The Cut today revealed more star power to come. Constance Wu, Issa Rae, Lisa Ling, Margaret Cho and Ziwe are among the upcoming guests the outlet lists. The piece also reveals more about the concept behind the show’s name and how it relates to many standard characterizations of women.
Per the Cut:
The rest of the episodes, she’ll dig into labels like Old Maid, Dragon Lady, Bimbo, Crazy, Angry Black Woman, Bitch, and Slut (Will Meghan say slut? “Oh my gosh. That makes me so uncomfortable.”)
The title of the Williams episode was “The Misconceptions of Ambition.”
Deadline reached out to Spotify and will add any comment received.
Produced by Archewell Audio in partnership with Spotify’s Gimlet Media, Archetypes arrived nearly two years after Markle and husband Prince Harry, under their Archewell Audio banner, signed an exclusive multiyear deal with Spotify.
Another arm of Markle’s mutimedia enterprise with her husband is Archwell Productions, which has a deal with Netflix.
As Deadline reported exclusively in May, her animated series Pearl was quietly dropped by Netflix as part of the wave of cutbacks going on at the streamer.
“There’s not much you can do when a company and a division changes their slate,” Markle said about the cancelation. “And there’s also not much you can do when, even if they think the project is great, the media will report it as though it was only my project.”...
