Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

Eric Day, Benjamin Michel, and Nick Confalone have launched LA-based Late Night Labs with Poker Face star Natasha Lyonne and Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto among its advisors.
The trio are using generative AI in the creative process but are hoping that the new technology can also provide artists with “tangible ownership” with what they create.
Day and Michel have worked in immersive media with the likes of Disney, NFL, New York Times, Epic, Hulu, Global Citizen, and Google, while Confalone is a 20-year veteran writer/producer in children’s television, best known for his work on Hasbro’s My Little Pony franchise, Apple’s Helpsters, and Disney’s SuperKitties.
Late Night Labs’ slate includes film and television projects with a range of filmmakers, animators, and documentarians – the first of which debut later this year.

But then something strange happens: She reawakens and is once again staring at that same bathroom mirror, in that same all-black outfit from the night before. Eventually it becomes clear to the viewers, and then to Nadia as she keeps reliving her “sweet birthday baby” night over and over again, that she’s stuck in a time loop.

Exclusive: For at least the last three years, Latino Hollywood has been abuzz about a Chalino Sanchez biopic that has been in the works though nothing solid emerged — until now.
The new indie film Chalino will tell the story of Rosalino Sánchez Félix, better known as Chalino and “El Rey del Corrido,” an antihero who achieved superstardom and attained legendary status for his contributions to the popularity of the Regional music subgenre Narcocorridos.
For the lead role, David Castañeda was the standout among thousands of Latinos who auditioned for the role, sources tell Deadline. He has been circling the role for months with talks currently heating up, we hear. However, no deal has been signed. Production is said to be targeting the start of production for later this year.

Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Loot Season 2, Episode 4, “Mr. Congeniality.”] Loot’s latest episode welcomed a very special guest star with the appropriately titled installment, “Mr. Congeniality.” Benjamin Bratt stepped in to play a version of himself as Molly (Maya Rudolph) visited a swanky meditation retreat for her mental well-being. Things took a hilariously heated turn as Molly couldn’t hide her attraction to the movie star. Much to Molly’s delight, Bratt expressed an equal interest in her. But how did this amazing guest star appearance even come together? It turns out that there’s a Poker Face connection as Natasha Lyonne, who stars in the Peacock series is an executive producer on Loot and suggested her costar Bratt for the role. Apple TV+ “I mean, you yourself Poker Faced that… Natasha did suggest Benjamin Bratt,” co-creator Alan Yang says with a laugh. “She was like, ‘he’s incredible!’ And she really liked working...

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

As part of its big CinemaCon Presentation this year, Paramount let loose a barrage of animated movie news, not the least of which was word that Dave Bautista and Eric Nam are aboard to lend their voices to what is currently titled Aang: The Last Airbender.
Yes, with interest perked back up in the franchise thanks to the Netflix live-action take, Paramount naturally wanted to offer an update about its animated film version. Alongside Bautista and Nam, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten and Roman Zaragoza are in the voice cast, while original animated Airbender series veteran Lauren Montgomery is directing. The film will be in cinemas October 2025.
But that wasn't all – there was also a voice cast update for the next animated Smurfs film, which has Rihanna playing Smurfette (along with writing music and producing) has bolstered its star complement with Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Jp Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris,...

It's been more than 10 years since the world was subjected to the last "Scary Movie" sequel, but as is the case with any famous horror movie villain, it's practically impossible to keep this series down forever. And now Paramount Pictures plans to breathe new life into this particular franchise. The studio will be teaming up with Miramax to resurrect the "Scary Movie" franchise with a brand new installment. Production begins this fall, and the film will be in theaters in 2025.
Variety reports that producer Neal H. Moritz, who is best known for producing the "Fast and Furious" movies for Universal, will be producing this new iteration. Moritz was not directly associated with any of the previous five "Scary Movie" films, but interestingly, he did produce a couple of horror flicks that were parodied in those early versions, including "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend." Columbo wouldn’t know what to make of the technicolored outfits sported by amateur snoop Elsbeth Tascioni (played to quirky perfection by Emmy winner Carrie Preston). Yet the iconic TV detective, immortalized by the late Peter Falk and known for his shabby trench coat, would likely recognize a kindred spirit cut from the same metaphorical cloth. Elsbeth, a delightful spinoff built around a memorably offbeat character first introduced as a foil on Robert and Michelle King‘s The Good Wife and The Good Fight, is in good company. Peacock‘s terrific Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, an irreverent drifter with a gift for spotting murderous liars, follows a similar Columbo-like “how-catch-’em” light mystery format. We see the crime and the criminal—typically a well-known actor—before our hero even shows their face. Elsbeth’s madcap wardrobe and sunny sensibility, much like Columbo’s shambling demeanor and Charlie’s scrappy underdog persona,...

Everything old is new again when it comes to TV detective shows. First, Natasha Lyonne did her best Columbo on Peacock’s quirky Poker Face, then Clive Owen resurrected iconic gumshoe Sam Spade on AMC’s sleek Monsieur Spade. Now Colin Farrell is taking a shot at the old-school private eye game with Apple TV+’s Sugar — and what do you know, this one works, too. A stylishly shot throwback to classic film noir with lean and mean storytelling and smart and lively dialogue, Sugar (premiering Friday, Apr. 5; I’ve seen four of the eight episodes) doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel…...

"All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town." -- Leo Tolstoy
Two of today's hottest shows -- Tracker and Reacher -- are keeping the tradition of the "traveling stranger" alive and well by providing comfort viewing with a kick.
There has always been room on television for the archetype of the helpful loner traveling from town to town.
In the 1960s, James Garner's Maverick featured a wisecracking cowboy poker player with a heart of gold.
That show's campy cousin, The Wild, Wild West, had two Secret Service agents in tight trousers solving cross-country crimes from a swanky steam engine (the original Airstream?).
In the 1970s, The Incredible Hulk put a contemporary spin on the traveling stranger theme, complete with that decade's anxiety over nuclear power.

It's now been five years since Lucasfilm and parent company Disney made a new "Star Wars" film. Instead, stories about that galaxy far, far away have been chronicled in Disney+ TV shows and in a multimedia project of books and comics that you might not even be aware of: "Star Wars: The High Republic."
Set a few centuries before the Skywalker Saga begins in "The Phantom Menace" (returning to theaters this May), "The High Republic" is so named because it follows the Republic and the Jedi Order at the height of their powers. The Sith are in hiding, believed to have been vanquished, and the Jedi instead face a pirate horde called the Nihil.

Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s company T-Street has signed a two-picture producing deal with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.
Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who took over as the studio’s co-chairs and CEOs in 2022, orchestrated the deal. It marks the producers’ first collaboration with Warner Bros., having previously worked with Lionsgate on the box office hit “Knives Out,” Netflix on its sequel “Glass Onion,” Disney on “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and Focus Features on the neo-noir thriller “Brick.” It’s unclear if Johnson will direct either of the two films that he’ll be overseeing at Warner Bros.
“Mike and Pam’s renewed commitment to original storytelling and the theatrical experience make Warner Bros. Discovery an ideal place to help us bring the filmmakers we love to audiences around the world on a grand scale,” said Johnson and Bergman. “We’re thrilled to have them as partners.

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

Like everyone else during the pandemic, Paul Giamatti found solace on Zoom. The veteran actor caught an online talk presented by Stephen Asma, an author and philosophy professor at Columbia College Chicago. Giamatti liked what Asma had to say about imagination and consciousness, so he did what any well-connected fan would do and reached out.
“We were Zooming when Zoom was a new thing. It was nice to chat with this guy, and we found each other having these longer and longer chats,” says Giamatti during a rare break from his best actor Oscar campaign for his role in Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers. “Stephen jokingly said, ‘We ought to do something with this.’ ” The joke then turned serious. To craft their pitch, they sent one of their chats to visual artist Alex Sokol, who added animation and striking images to represent things they bantered about, like aliens, UFOs and bigfoot.

Exclusive: Lionsgate’s female-driven John Wick spinoff Ballerina has added David Castañeda (The Umbrella Academy) and Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education) to its cast amid reshoots abroad, Deadline can reveal.
Word of the castings comes at a newsy time in the world of John Wick, as word has emerged of a Wick series in the works, alongside an animated series adaptation of Twilight.
Ballerina watches as a young female assassin (Ana de Armas) trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma seeks revenge against the people who killed her family — as did Wick against those who have did him wrong, in films released between 2014 and 2019. After signing a new deal with Lionsgate expanding his oversight of the John Wick franchise, of which he was the architect, Chad Stahelski is working with Ballerina helmer Len Wiseman to shape new action sequences for the film.
