Hasan Minhaj Addresses 'New Yorker' Article Amid Claims of Lying in Comedy Specials, Author Responds
Hasan Minhaj is speaking out.
The 38-year-old comedian and TV host shared a video on Thursday (October 26), in which he addressed allegations that he lied and/or embellished stories told in past comedy stand-up specials, as explored in a New Yorker article.
“Every story in my style is built around a seed of truth. My comedy Arnold Palmer is 70% emotional truth — this happened — and then 30% hyperbole, exaggeration, fiction,” he’s quoted as saying in the article.
Keep reading to find out more…In the new video, he says the profile, written by Clare Malone, has “omissions and factual errors” that “misrepresented my life story, so I wanted to give people the context and materials I provided The New Yorker with full transparency.”
The New Yorker issued a response, which the author shared on X: “Hasan Minhaj confirms in this video that he selectively presents information and embellishes to make a point: exactly what we reported.

Comedian Hasan Minhaj has come under some fire lately for admitting that a number of stories built into his stand-up sets aren’t entirely based on fact. As the comedian put it, “Every story in my style is built around a seed of truth…My comedy Arnold Palmer is 70% emotional truth — this happened — and then 30% hyperbole, exaggeration, fiction.” This should seem fairly obvious, shouldn’t it? We may not consciously think of it while the performance is going on, but we can’t reasonably expect each and every sentence and story in a stand-up comedian’s act to be completely factual, right? Well, as it turns out, some do.
On Monday’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg came to Hasan Minhaj’s defense, saying that’s just part of what comedians do. “We tell stories and we embellish them.” She continued, “If you’re going to hold a comic...

Hasan Minhaj is revealing that his stories in stand-up comedy sets are all part of an “emotional rollercoaster ride” for audiences and not based on facts.
The former “Patriot Act” host told The New Yorker that while certain elements of his storytelling are “grounded in truth,” his former statements about being assaulted by a police officer and his daughter being hospitalized after an anthrax terrorism scare were inaccurate; those events did not happen.
“No, I don’t think I’m manipulating [the audience],” Minhaj said of the discrepancies. “I think they are coming for the emotional rollercoaster ride…To the people that are, like, ‘Yo, that is way too crazy to happen,’ I don’t care because yes, fuck yes — that’s the point.”
Minhaj’s statements were included in 2022 Netflix comedy special “The King’s Jester.” He added, “I think what I’m ultimately trying to do is highlight all of those stories,...

In a new profile published by The New Yorker, comedian, former “Patriot Act” host and “The Daily Show” alum Hasan Minhaj admitted to fabricating details in past stand-up specials, such as 2022’s “The King’s Jester” that streamed on Netflix.
“Every story in my style is built around a seed of truth,” Minhaj said. “My comedy Arnold Palmer is 70% emotional truth — this happened — and then 30% hyperbole, exaggeration, fiction.”
One story Minhaj told in “The King’s Jester” related to an envelope with white powder that was sent to his home. Naturally, he thought the powder was anthrax. According to the comedian in the special, the powder accidentally spilled onto his daughter and she was rushed to the hospital. The doctor told him it was not anthrax. Later that night, he said his wife told him: “You get to say whatever you want onstage, and we have to live with the consequences.

It’s a rainy day in New York City, and Maya Hawke is telling me about her short-lived attempt to call her father ‘Ethan’ on the set of their new film, “Wildcat.” We’re escaping the downpour at a cozy neighborhood restaurant in Chelsea, and sitting across from the striking father-daughter duo is like having a front-row seat to the royal family of art-house cinema.
“I started using his name — ‘Ethan’ — to be like, ‘I’m a professional,’” the 25-year-old “Stranger Things” actress says. “And then I realized it was actually more distracting to people. They’d be like, ‘Why are you doing that?’ So I mostly called him ‘Dad.’”
Such is life when you’re a Gen Z “It” girl whose father is a Gen X icon. But there’s very little celebrity polish to the pair when we meet in the dog days of August. Maya, who has...

Dianna Agron comes off as remarkably calm, cool, and collected. What is it about the game of golf that makes good cinema? We can barely keep our eyes open during the PGA Tour. Its tranquil vibes are more relaxing than a glass of warm milk. And we can't name but a handful of players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, er... Is there a famous "Dave" in there? Still, we could pop in and enjoy at least a dozen films about the sport at a moment's notice on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's something majestic about the luscious greens, the stillness of the crowd, the whispered play-by-play, and the distant thwack of a ball that translates to the big screen.
Or maybe it's the class struggle, as golf is seen as a gentleman's sport designed for the wealthy. A round of golf at Pebble Beach will set you back nearly 600! Or perhaps we're intoxicated by the psychology of the game,...

Bill Russell, the intimidating center who rejected layups and bigotry with equal authority while leading the Boston Celtics to pro basketball’s greatest dynasty, died Sunday, his family announced. He was 88.
Russell won five Most Valuable Player awards and the Celtics captured 11 NBA championships during his 13-year career, including eight in a row from 1959-66. His powerful adversary during the 1960s, Wilt Chamberlain, ended the streak by leading the Philadelphia 76ers to the league title.
The 7-foot-1 Chamberlain and the 6-foot-9 Russell met 142 times in an epic rivalry of big men that riveted basketball fans for a decade. His Celtics went 57-37 against Chamberlain’s teams during the regular season and owned a 29-20 advantage in the playoffs.

Golf journalist Tim Rosaforte got the type of tribute today from Jack Nicklaus that journalists usually heap on legends like Jack Nicklaus. Rosaforte, who was one of the top golf journalists in the world and one of the most popular announcers on Golf Channel and NBC Sports, died Tuesday of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 66.
Nicklaus began a three-tweet tribute to Rosaforte with the following: “Many hearts, including Barbara’s & mine, hurt today after the passing of our friend Tim Rosaforte. Tim had a wonderful ability to develop trust from so many, and because of that—plus his work ethic—if there was an important story to be told in golf, Tim usually reported it first.”

Eighties nostalgia is alive and well in Hollywood, it seems! Not only did Peacock TV recently reboot the beloved Punky Brewster and Saved by the Bell series to much fanfare, but Fred Savage is currently executive producing a reimaging of his hit show The Wonder Years, and the eagerly anticipated third season of Netflix’s Karate Kid-inspired Cobra Kai hit the streaming giant at the start of the year, immediately securing the No. 1 spot. The latter, which debuted in 2018 and is set 34 years after Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) defeated Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) in the 1984 All Valley Karate Championship at the end of the first film, sees the two adversaries on opposite sides of the mat yet again, this time as adults, and has proved highly popular with audiences. And now, the house where a grown-up Daniel lives with his wife and children on the series is up for sale!

Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, was a focus for last night’s late-night talk shows.
Many of the shows featured interviews and sketches based on today’s celebration with calls from hosts and guests calling for states to follow Virginia, New York and Texas and make it a national holiday.
Jimmy Kimmel had Pharrell Williams on his ABC show. Williams, who Deadline revealed earlier today is in talks with Netflix on a Juneteenth musical, was at Governor Northam’s side when he recognized Juneteenth as a holiday in Virginia.

Could ESPN’s “Last Dance” be just the first salvo in a series of ambitious sports documentary efforts?
Golf Channel plans to debut “Tiger Slam,” a documentary film from the NBCUniversal-owned outlet’s own Golf Films unit, on May 24 at 8 p.m. The project examines Tiger Woods’ 10-month stretch of wins in 2000 and 2001, when the legendary golfer captured the sport’s four major championships in succession. The film, narrated by actor Michael Kenneth Williams, includes comments and perspective from caddie Steve Williams and swing instructor Butch Harmon, as well as recollections from various sports personalities who witnessed Woods’ incredible run.

In dozens of tributes, Dan Jenkins — who died at 90 on March 7th in his birthplace of Fort Worth, Texas — was cited as the most influential and/or the greatest sportswriter, period, of all time. The author of 23 books and untold hundreds of articles and columns was at the outset most noted for his first novel, Semi-Tough (1971), a groundbreaking, raucous deep-dive into the world of pro football that became a celebrated 1977 film starring Burt Reynolds, Kris Kristofferson and Jill Clayburgh.
Jenkins left indelible imprints in journalism, particularly in his nearly 25 years at Sports Illustrated.

NBC Sports Group and golfer Rory McIlroy have teamed to launch Golfpass, a $10-a-month subscription package that bundles video streaming of golf tournaments and instruction with travel, shopping and tee-time benefits.
The founders are calling it a “first-of-its-kind” direct-to-consumer initiative. Discovery and Tiger Woods got some attention last November with their non-u.S. streaming partnership GolfTV, but NBC Sports executives stressed in a briefing that Golfpass is a more comprehensive lifestyle offering.
Launching in the U.S. for now, Golfpass plans to soon expand to the UK and Australia in short order.
During a press briefing, McIlroy and Mike McCarley, president of golf for the NBC Sports Group, both repeatedly underscored the strong emotional connection they both felt to golf legend Arnold Palmer, who founded the Golf Channel in 1995. NBC parent Comcast took full control of the channel in 2003. In the...

Cody Gribble didn’t have the best first round at Bay Hill, as evidenced by his triple-bogey at the 3rd hole, but it could have taken a turn for the worse when came across an alligator on the course.
Gribble was strolling down the 6th fairway that runs along the water Thursday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida when he spotted an alligator sunning itself along the fairway’s edge. At this point the obvious course of action would have been to change direction and avoid any interaction with the reptile, but Gribble chose a different path.
