For a movie that fits firmly in the dystopian sci-fi genre, Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 film "Children of Men" makes for one of the most truly terrifying films ever. In a world where infertility has been the law of the land for eighteen years and resources have dwindled, humanity has turned on itself. It's like the grimmest of '70s science fiction films, only made by a master filmmaker at the peak of his powers. While it might have taken a tragedy for him to become committed to the film, his passion is evident in every frame.

As Parliament prepares to debate a UK ban on fur imports next week, 50 veterinary and animal behaviour experts including Un Ambassador of Peace and world renowned conservationist Dr Jane Goodall, have joined with #FurFreeBritain campaigners from animal charity Humane Society International/UK in writing to Environment Secretary Michael Gove.
In a letter to the Minister they express their “concern at the severe animal welfare deficiencies inherent to the fur trade” and point to the “worrying, even distressing evidence of persistently poor welfare conditions”.
Wildlife expert Chris Packham has also sent MPs an impassioned video message to support #FurFreeBritain, in which he says the fur trade is “entirely repugnant” and urges them to ignore welfare-washing by the fur trade which he calls “nonsense”.
Fur farming was banned in the UK in 2000, but since that time Britain has imported animal fur worth more than £650 million from countries such as Italy, France, Poland,...

Animal Defenders International (Adi) congratulates the Scottish Parliament for being the first nation in the UK to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses. MSPs today unanimously voted through the ban at the final Stage 3 debate for The Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses (Scotland) Bill, which now awaits Royal Assent.
Jan Creamer, President of Animal Defenders International, said: ""The public called for a ban, and the Scottish Government and Parliament listened, banishing travelling circuses with wild animals forever. Meanwhile, England continues to sit on its hands, and a bill nearly 5 years old – no more delays, it’s time to stop circus suffering."

Chicago – The legacy of country music singer Hank Williams is embraced in every lonesome twang you hear in any song. The actor Tom Hiddleston (“Thor”) transcends his Loki roots to embody the 1950s songster in a way that is otherworldly, working from the script and direction of Marc Abraham.
Hank Williams was a bright wattage bulb that burned like a thousand suns, and was extinguished instantly at the tender age of 29. The influence of his short time within the country music scene, from about 1946 through to his death in 1953, was through the music chart statistic that Williams had an astounding 35 singles reach the country and western Top Ten (five after his death). His signature style and easy-going hit making continues to be heard in the heart of C&W (and all pop) music, and he can easily qualify as one of the Olympus-like gods of that particular brand of musical faith.

Tom Hiddleston gives a remarkable performance, with some fine singing, as country music legend Hank Williams but it is not enough to rescue I Saw The Light, which reduces the singer/songwriter’s skyrocket career and brief life into a grim slog, plodding towards his death at age 29.
Any doubts that Hiddleston, a classically trained British actor who perhaps is best known to American audiences as Loki in the Thor and Avengers movies, could play the country music legend are immediately dispelled at the start of the film. The problem is writer/director Marc Abraham’s script, coupled with uninspired direction.
Hank Williams was a pivotal figure in country music, who changed the genre and also laid the foundation for rock and roll. Like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, Hank Williams burst onto musical charts like a skyrocket, blazed brilliantly, then suddenly vanishing, but left a lasting legacy that changed the nature of country music.

Twangin' Tom Hiddleston lights up the screen whenever he sings as country music legend Hank Williams in the biopic I Saw the Light, which plays like a dramatization of a Wikipedia entry. A sense of doom hangs over the picture, since it's no secret that Williams died young in the early 1950s. Rather than focusing on the bright spots of Williams' life and career -- as nicely handled in The Buddy Holly Story (1978) and La Bamba (1987), to cite two of many examples -- filmmaker Marc Abraham furthers the bleak impression by choosing a curiously dry path that is rarely compelling. Drawing from Colin Escott's book Hank Williams: The Biography, this is the first produced screenplay by Abraham, a veteran producer who made his...

How does Tom Hiddleston, an Oxbridge man who went to Eton with Prince William, score a role playing Hank Williams, the twangy legend of the Nashville's Grand ole Opry? Apparently by looking just like him and doing his best Owen Wilson impression for the director. Back in the midst of 2015, it seemed like the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light was all set to be a big Academy Award player. Considering how small this week’s platform release of the film is, as well as its middling festival circuit reception, that seems less than likely, but it is somewhat interesting to take note of. The main point of consideration was going to be Tom Hiddleston as Williams, as well as potentially Elizabeth Olsen as wife Audrey Williams, though now I suspect they’re fringe players at best. I’ll return to their Oscar hopes later on in this article, but I just wanted to cite this film today since it’s one of a ton hoping to be a biopic contender in 2016. The movie is a fairly standard biopic. Of course, the subject is legendary country-western singer Hank Williams and his life that was cut short.

Who knew Tom Hiddleston could sing? In I Saw the Light, the British actor lends his considerable vocal talent to play the legendary country singer/songwriter Hank Williams and simply shines in the role.
The biopic from writer/director Marc Abraham focuses on Williams’ rise to fame in the 1950s, from a local radio show personality to a Grand Ole Opry staple. It also examines his relationships with the women in his life, particularly first wife Audrey, played by Elizabeth Olsen.
Hank and Audrey were actually married and divorced twice and had a difficult time of it, mostly because Audrey wanted a singing career of her own and resented Hank’s constant absence while she stayed home with the children. However, things really go from bad to worse when Hank’s battle with alcoholism sends him into a spiral downwards – a battle Williams lost in 1953 when he died from heart...

Giving the role of American country music legend Hank Williams to English actor Tom Hiddleston is pretty much the antithesis of typecasting.
Hiddleston is a Royal Academy-trained thespian who won the Laurence Olivier Award for his turn in a 2007 stage production of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. He’s best known to North American audiences as Loki, the eloquent villain of Marvel’s cinematic universe.
Williams, on the other hand, is the twangy Alabama country icon who produced the classics “Hey, Good Lookin’,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Yet there’s Hiddleston southern-drawling his way through classic Hank Williams tunes in director Marc Abraham’s bio-pic I Saw the Light.
How did he transform?
“It actually all started here in Toronto,” recalls Hiddleston during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival where I Saw the Light had its world premiere.

Have you ever seen Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story? Well, Marc Abraham’s I Saw The Light is the Exact type of biopic that John C. Reilly’s Dewey Cox character pokes fun at. Judd Apatow and Jake Kasdan cleverly roast formulaic true-story recounts in their highly underrated comedy, yet here we are, some eight years later, and Abraham manages to recreate the dramatic equivalent to Dewey Cox’s fabricated life.
Maybe Hank Williams’ story was a major influence on Walk Hard, because entire scenes are recreated with uncanny likenesses – I’m talkin’ about being double married and stuff, not even the obvious genre notes. Tom Hiddleston is a knockout Williams impersonator, but unfortunately for Abraham, his leading man’s charisma only goes so far.
Strapping on his Americana stirrups, Hiddleston plays musical legend Hank Williams, who stunned honky-tonk listeners in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He lived a short,...

How can a British actor, best known for his role in The Avengers, be fit to play the legendary father of contemporary country music, Hank Williams? It's a question that's been tossed around since the biopic went into development in 2009 with London-born Tom Hiddleston as the lead, and will finally be answered when I Saw the Light hits theaters in March. But a new trailer, released today, gives a hint or two at the controversial film — and it looks like it's all about love, loss and the reality of never...

"Boy, I'm a professional at making a mess of things."
Tom Hiddleston seems to perfectly portray country music legend Hank Williams in this upcoming biopic called I Saw the Light. The movie premiered at Tiff a few months ago and although Hiddleston's performance was praised, the movie itself wasn't met with the greatest reviews. From what I've heard, the film was recut after that screening and the release date was pushed back.
The film was written and directed by Marc Abraham and it also stars Elizabeth Olsen, David Krumholtz, Bradley Whitford, and Cherry Jones. Here's a detailed synopsis:
Hank Williams wrote and recorded some of country music’s most enduring songs before his untimely death at age twenty-nine. These songs were fuelled by a blend of turmoil and heartbreak — not surprising considering the Alabama-born balladeer’s private life, which director Marc Abraham brings to the screen with a clear-eyed appreciation of the man’s complexity.

“Everybody has a little darkness in them,” whispers Tom Hiddleston in the first full trailer (see below) for musical biopic I Saw The Light. Headlining the drama as the late, great Hank Williams, the British thesp is taking a firm step back from the superhero scene, and it’s a creative departure that will even have him flexing his husky vocal chords for Marc Abraham’s feature.
Released in select theaters on November 27, I Saw The Light chronicles William’s barnstorming rise to fame, who won over the hearts and minds of Alabama with a string of heart-wrenching and raw performances. But for all of the artist’s brilliance, the late singer-songwriter faced numerous problems with drug abuse and alcoholism, leading him to become increasingly violent and erratic before his eye-catching career came to an abrupt halt at the age of 29.
Joining Hiddleston for the ride is Godzilla and Age of Ultron star Elizabeth Olsen.

One of our British baes Tom Hiddleston (now, now, no fighting, Cumberbitches) is coming for your country heartstrings in director Marc Abraham's Hank Williams biopic, I Saw the Light, where he plays the talented but troubled country artist. How does the actor from Westminster sound as one of the most iconic voices in country music? Judging from the first trailer, pretty darn good! But Hiddleston has always had a way with impressions.

Starring Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen, "I Saw the Light" is a biopic centered around country superstar Hank Williams, one of the most prolific songwriters of all time, who rose to fame and died at the age of 29 after years of substance abuse. The film marks the second feature from director Marc Abraham and features Hiddleston performing all of his own musical numbers. The actor learned how to play the guitar exclusively for the role. "Boy, I'm a professional at making a mess of things." Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled an official trailer for I Saw the Light, the upcoming film starring Tom Hiddleston as legendary country singer Hank Williams. Despite Tom Hiddleston's performance, the film received fairly dismal reviews after premiering at Tiff a few months ago (read Marco's review). Word is the film was re-cut and they pushed back the release a few months for them to figure out a new strategy. Now we get our first glimpse and it doesn't look that promising - but it depends on how much you like country music. In addition to Hiddleston, the cast includes Elizabeth Olsen, David Krumholtz, Bradley Whitford and Cherry Jones. Give it a watch below. Here's the first official trailer for Marc Abraham's I Saw the Light, found on YouTube: I Saw the Light, the story of the legendary country western singer Hank Williams,...

Once set to have arrived in theaters last week, Sony Pictures Classics decided to move I Saw the Light, the Hank Williams biopic which finds Tom Hiddleston in the leading role, to 2016. Coming from longtime producer Marc Abraham (Children of Men, Dawn of the Dead), whose directorial debut was Flash of Genius, the film will now arrive in March and today brings the first trailer.
We said in our review, “The opening to Marc Abraham‘s I Saw the Light holds a lot of intrigue. Based on Colin Escott‘s biography about hillbilly legend Hank Williams, the start goes from a faux black and white newsreel interview with producer Fred Rose (Bradley Whitford) recounting how one-of-a-kind the singer was to a magically lit performance by Tom Hiddleston as Williams (the actor sings every note and the actors playing his band pluck every string). He’s sitting on a stool with a hazy spotlight pouring down,...

In an alternate world, “I Saw The Light,” the biopic of country star Hank Williams, premiered a trailer months ago, after rave reviews out of the fall festivals, and would currently be hoping for awards wins for its stars. Unfortunately, that’s not quite how it worked: Though stars Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen picked up glowing notices, the film itself, directed by Marc Abraham, was less warmly received (here's our own review), and Sony Pictures Classics decided to push it out of the crowded awards season. But the release date, next March, is now closing in, and EW have premiered the first full trailer for the movie. It’s our best look at Hiddleston in a character that’s somewhat against type for the young British actor, and both he and co-star Olsen look very impressive, though the movie itself seems to hit all the clichéd music-biopic beats (we...

I Saw the Light may have been pushed back to March of 2016, but it didn’t change the premiere plans, or dampen anyone’s spirits. The premiere, which was on the 17th at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, saw writer/director Marc Abraham and the film’s cast enjoying the scene during the red carpet and an after party, which included music by Tom Hiddleston.

The life and times of Hank Williams may not be the story everyone is looking for, but with a legend that is impossible to deny, and a solid cast, this could be a film that turns out to be for everyone.
I Saw the Light has released some new images, and if you’re very familiar with Williams’ life, they’re a very interesting batch of photos, revealing a great deal about the moments you can expect in the film. On the other hand, you knew they were there anyway.
Hiddleston, who is already in theaters with Crimson Peak, may seem an odd choice at first, but what we’ve already seen of him should remove any doubts, and though no one could get that smile exactly right, some of these images are downright creepy. Plus, Hiddleston and Olsen have proven themselves over the last few years, and ought to...

As Tom Hiddleston earns raves for his performance in Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak," Sony Pictures Classics is quietly withdrawing "I Saw the Light" from its planned November 27th theatrical release. Which means they won't be mounting an expensive Oscar campaign for Hiddleston, who drew the only nice things anyone had to say about the film (it's at 31% Rotten on the Tomatometer) which costars Elizabeth Olsen as the alcoholic country singer's beleaguered wife. It's pretty rare for any movie with reviews that bad to compete with the big boys. The movie written and directed by Marc Abraham is a straight-on musical biopic which may do better in the spring against less competition. Finally Hiddleston is a rising movie star and many women may want to see the movie because of his engaging, charismatic performance as a Nashville country icon, which is a stretch for a British actor. That Hiddleston...

The light before a good sunset in Tennessee changes from fiery pink to a flood of gold until the sky eventually turns a dark enough purple to be lit by a falling star — just as Hank Williams wrote it. In September of 2014, the summer heat had eased up enough to enjoy the outdoors at dusk and those same colors began to fill the sky as Tom Hiddleston was finishing a run along the hillsides south of Nashville. In under 40 days, filming for the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light would begin in Shreveport,...
