The Estonian director’s sophomore feature revolves around an Estonian intelligence officer who has to track down a mysterious Soviet double agent. Margus Paju is now shooting his second feature, a spy thriller entitled O2. The project follows Paju’s debut film, The Secret Society of Souptown (2015), which became the highest-grossing Estonian family flick at the time and picked up important awards at Stockholm, Zurich, Schlingel, Yerevan and many other international festivals. Paju, an alumnus of Tallinn’s Baltic Film and Media School, directed several shorts, such as My Condolences (2014), Black Out (2009) and Audition (2006), before working on his first feature. The story of O2, penned by Tiit Aleksejev, Eriikka Etholén-Paju and Tom Abrams, kicks off on 23 August 1939, when Europe started fearing an imminent war, and the Soviet Union and Hitler’s Germany shook the world to its core by signing a non-aggression pact. At that very moment, an...
Even though everyone is pretty much amped that Pennywise and the newest adaptation of It are making their home entertainment debuts this Tuesday, we also have more great Blu-rays and DVD releases to look forward to as well. It’s a big week for Troma, as not only their latest feature, Hectic Knife, comes home on Blu this week, but Troma alum Trent Haaga’s wickedly wild crime caper 68 Kill is being released by Scream Factory and IFC Midnight.
Arrow Academy has put together a Special Edition release of The Witches, and a film that I really enjoyed out of Sundance 2017—Bad Day for the Cut—gets released this week via the fine folks over at Well Go USA. Other notable releases for January 9th include Friend Request and Nails.

The Notebook
Written by Tom Abrams, András Szekér and János Szász
Directed by János Szász
Hungary/Germany/Austria/France, 2013
Set in a small border village over the course of World War II, Hungarian curio The Notebook is unlike any war film you’ve ever seen. Its central characters are twin boys, named only in the credits as One (András Gyémánt) and Other (László Gyémánt), who think and act as a single person. At the beginning of the film, their parents take them away from their luxurious city apartment, fearing that identical twins would be too conspicuous in wartime. They are sent to live with their mean-spirited Grandmother (Piroska Molnár), despite the fact that she has unequivocally fallen out with their mother and is suspected of murdering her husband. The only instructions given to them are to keep up with their studies and record everything that happens in a notebook. It...

Chicago – Does anyone else remember when crappy straight-to-dvd sequels were pretty much reserved for horror movies and kid’s flicks? Sure, we expected a new “Leprechaun” or “Air Bud” movie every now and then, but the action market has really gotten into this game recently and produced their share of junk. Take for example the awful “Smokin’ Aces 2,” a shoot-em-up that makes Joe Carnahan’s original look like a genre classic by comparison.
“Smokin’ Aces” Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
To be fair, the original “Smokin’ Aces,” also recently released on Blu-ray to coincide with the ignominious debut of its quasi-sequel, Is a genre classic to a lot of young fans who turned it into a massive hit on the home market. Action films always do well on DVD and “Smokin’ Aces” is an unapolegetic bullet opera with a ridiculously talented cast.
