For several years, Forbes has ranked the Dallas Cowboys as not only the most valuable team in the NFL, but the most valuable sports team in the world. In 2023, the Cowboys were worth $9 billion and rising — the result of decades of exceptional athletic talent, coaching, and management that took shape during the ’90s, when the once-struggling team transformed into three-time Super Bowl champions.
The upcoming documentary series by the Emmy-winning directors of Wild Wild Country and Untold will tell the story of how “America’s Team” established a legacy. It features interviews with the architects of the Cowboys’ success, including the owner, president, and general manager, Jerry Jones, who purchased the team in 1989. Among the doc’s other commentators are players who became household names in the ’90s — Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders — as well as head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer,...

Fresh from being roasted on Netflix, Tom Brady turned up to the Fox Upfronts.
Suited and booted, Brady discovered that he’ll be calling a game involving the Dallas Cowboys – the first time in five years that Fox is opening with a Dallas game.
“I know how important the Cowboys are to this network,” Brady said.
“I love being part of that Fox family,” Brady said. “Walking out of my first meeting with Fox, it reminded me of my amazing teammates. To be part of the game I love, to be part of the greatest telecast in football every single week, ultimately made my decision.”
Standing next to Michael Strahan, Brady joked that it’s “nice when you’re not hitting me”. He added that he didn’t do so well next to Strahan, whose New York Giants beat Brady’s New England Patriots twice in the Super Bowl.

Wade Bowen never stopped pouring his heart out in his songs. What’s different about him after 25-plus years of music is the amount of joy in those pours.
“We’re having so much fun playing music, we’re having so much fun writing songs and recording,” Bowen tells Rolling Stone. “I feel like we’re in this amazing groove right now, and I feel like we need to keep the pedal down.”
Bowen is talking about Flyin, his latest record, out now. But he is also talking about his world at the moment.

The popular team of analysts may not be available on TNT for much longer, as NBC looks poised to steal its NBA package.
Which way is the NBA’s ball set to bounce? Will it carom back to TNT for another decade, or will NBC steal the package of games whose rights are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery by making the league an offer it can’t refuse? The latter possibility looks increasingly likely, and if Wbd does lose its NBA rights, one question that many fans will immediately begin to ponder is what will become of the popular “Inside the NBA” team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson; arguably the best sports show on television. There are plenty of options available to the group, including the possibility that 2025 is the final time that they appear on TV together.

Jason Kelce has landed at ESPN.
The former Philadelphia Eagles center has signed with the Disney-owned sports giant to work on its Monday Night Countdown NFL pregame show, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Kelce’s landing pad has been one of the hottest questions of the NFL offseason, with multiple TV partners pursuing him.
Kelce participated in last year’s NFL broadcast boot camp, where the league helps train current and former players in the ins and outs of broadcasting. Kelce was seen as a star performer in that boot camp.
Monday Night Countdown, the pregame show for ESPN Monday Night Football, already has a top-shelf talent list, including Scott Van Pelt, Robert Griffin III and Larry Fitzgerald. During the games themselves, ESPN has Joe Buck and Troy Aikman leading the main broadcast, with Peyton and Eli Manning leading an alternative telecast.

Sports broadcaster ESPN saw nearly 32 million viewers tune in for its Saturday match-up between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans, making it the most-watched non-championship National Football League (NFL) game ever aired on the network.
It was the second consecutive year that ESPN — jointly owned between the Walt Disney Company and Hearst Television — broke its own viewership record with a divisional playoff game, the network said in a statement on Monday.
The 31.767 million viewers who tuned in surpassed last January’s match-up between the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The network said its viewership figure was based on preliminary Nielsen data, and it expects the number to surpass 32 million when finalized data is available.
Last Saturday’s game was broadcast on ESPN and the ABC television network, and streamed live through ESPN Plus and the NFL Plus app. Viewing peaked around 6:30 p.

One of the greatest plays in sports isn’t taking place on any athletic field.
Walt Disney Co. and the National Football League are said to be in earnest talks, according to two people familiar with the matter, that could have the league take a stake in ESPN while putting its NFL Media unit, which the sports body has been trying to monetize in better fashion, under the media company’s control. Such a move would further align Disney with the NFL, making it difficult for the company to lose valuable sports rights to show top-rated football games, and could put such NFL assets as the NFL Network and RedZone under Disney’s aegis.
Disney and the NFL declined to comment on the talks, which were reported previously by The New York Post and The Atlantic. Disney has been seeking partners for ESPN as it faces declines in one of...

“I’m told the replay of Nick Chubb getting injured is not to be seen,” Monday Night Football’s Joe Buck said on the ABC broadcast tonight. In the background just after, you could hear the stadium crowd react to the footage being shown onscreen.
“Yeah, we’re not going to show it. It’s as bad as you can imagine,” replied analyst Troy Aikman.
Chubb, the Cleveland Browns’ star running back, was on a short run near the end zone when he was hit low by Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and went down at the 3 yard line. He immediately grabbed his left leg and took off his helmet. You can see the play below, without the gruesome close-up.
Joe Buck: "I am told that the replay of Nick Chubb getting injured is not to be seen."

America’s Team and the world’s largest streaming service seem like a match made in heaven. Now they’re a match made on Earth as well, as Puck News reports Netflix has won the bidding for rights to a new docuseries featuring the Dallas Cowboys and their billionaire owner and general manager Jerry Jones.
Netflix had to beat out sports giant ESPN to secure the rights, and will pay $50 million to stream the series. Those who have screened the series already have given it favorable comparisons to “The Last Dance,” the docuseries featuring Michael Jordan’s run with the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls.

And that included dozens of stunt performers dressed as samurai engaging in combat in the aisles. But we’ll get back to that.
In a cavernous hall in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center, on an enormous stage that took some talent a full minute to walk across, Disney touted every single one of its brands, from ESPN and ABC to FX and Disney+, to Marvel and Lucasfilm.

While the Lombardi Trophy has remained out of reach during the past quarter-century-plus, Jones and his family have shepherded the rise of the Cowboys to the status of the most valuable franchise in professional sports.
Using never-before-seen footage from the NFL Films archive, the as-yet-untitled series will trace Jones’ rise from the son of an Arkansas community store owner to the top of the pro sports heap. Interviews will feature ex-Cowboys players Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders; former head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer...

A docuseries about Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys franchise is in the works from Skydance Sports and NFL Films.
Featuring some of NFL Films’ archived never-before-seen content, the series will chronicle the Cowboys owner, president, and general manger’s rise from the son of an Arkansas community store owner to becoming one of the most renowned leaders in sports. Additionally, the documentary will highlight several of the household names who partnered with Jones along the way, including Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders, Head Coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer, Rupert Murdoch, and Phil Knight.
When Jones first purchased the organization in 1989, the team was coming off a 13-loss season and was losing in excess of $1 million a month. He’s credited with transforming the franchise and leading a historic set of players and coaches to three NFL titles in the 1990s which ultimately cemented his name...

The first project to come out of the recently-announced NFL Films and Skydance Sports joint venture will be a “defining” docuseries about the Dallas Cowboys and the team’s owner, Jerry Jones.
The yet to be named series “will reach deep into NFL Films’ vast archive of never-before-seen content, and will trace Jones’ remarkable rise from the son of an Arkansas community store owner to being one of the most innovative and influential leaders in sport,” per the companies. Football legend Tom Brady plans to start his sportscasting duties for Fox in the fall of 2024, the retired athlete revealed during an interview Monday of Fox Sports 1.
Brady’s arrival had previously been uncertain, particularly after he announced his retirement at the end of the NFL’s 2022 season, then reneged.
He is expected to call NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, the Fox Sports announcer whose role was recently elevated after the exit of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman.
Brady “will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives,” Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch told investors in May of last year.

John Madden, the ex-coach and broadcaster who became synonymous with Thanksgiving thanks to his turkey leg awards to star players, will be honored by the NFL this year with several commemorative features.
With his telestrator and his penchant for yelling “Boom!” after a big play, Madden was as much a part of the Thanksgiving holiday as a family gathering.
Madden died at age 85 last year, and the National Football League is going to reflect on his lasting contributions with the “John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration.” The league hopes for the event to mark the start of another holiday tradition, offering special Madden segments on the day’s broadcasts by CBS, Fox, and NBC.
Madden was more than a broadcaster. He was also a Pro Football Hall of Fame member as the former coach of the Oakland Raiders. From there, he moved to broadcasting, where his exuberant style made every game interesting.

Up against former teammate Russell Wilson and his new Denver Broncos crew, the Seattle Seahawks desperately wanted a win last night at home.
With a 17-16 result on Monday Night Football, they got one — and so did ESPN, ABC and the NFL.
In one for the books, last night’s primetime gridiron matchup in Jet City was watched by 19.9 million viewers.
To capture the magnitude of that Monday audience, Mnf’s viewership was 236 greater than the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards over on NBC at the same time. In fact, while the Emmys hit an all-time low, the ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes broadcast game has proven to be the third-most-watched Mnf since 2009. The Seahawks’ win over Denver and Wilson also was the fourth-most-viewed NFL regular season game ever on the Disney-owned sports cabler.

The new team at NBC’s “Football Night in America” has yet to work a “Sunday Night Football” game in this year’s official NFL season, but they’ve already weathered at least one storm.
During NBC’s broadcast of the 2022 Hall of Fame Game last month, Jason Garrett, the former Dallas Cowboys head coach who is still relatively new to the art of TV sportscasting, got a bulletin in his ear courtesy of producer Matt Casey. “Looks like we have a rain delay,” Garrett recalls being told. “You guys are going to have to fill for half an hour.” Garrett, who has been working NBC’s Usfl broadcasts to warm up for his new stint on “Football Night,” took a moment to collect himself: “Oh, this is interesting.”
Everything that could have gone wrong with that telecast did, says Maria Taylor, who is taking over as the main host of the program this season.

Amazon’s Prime Video is one of the lions of the streaming business, with a shelf of awards, a multibillion-dollar advertising operation and reach to 80 million U.S. households to show for its efforts.
This Thursday, however, will mark perhaps the biggest milestone yet in Prime Video’s 15-year run, as it will deliver an exclusive stream of an NFL game for the first time. The contest between the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers is a preseason affair, so the stakes for the teams and fans are not exactly high. The NFL broadcasting field is about to get a lot more crowded. And loud.
Following the success of ESPN’s Peyton and Eli Manning-led “Manningcast” and Paramount’s Nickelodeon-themed NFL playoff game (and its own experience developing alternate audio feeds for NFL games), Amazon is planning a major push into alternative broadcast streams for the upcoming season of Thursday Night Football.
The tech giant said Monday that the hosts of Dude Perfect, the popular YouTube and social media trick shot personalities, will host an alternate stream this season.
Unlike previous seasons of Tnf, which saw Amazon encourage alternate audio tracks (hosts included Andrea Kremer and Hannah Storm, former NFL scouts, and a variety of Twitch streamers), the Dude Perfect feed will include video of the guys doing challenges and attempting world record tricks in between plays, joined by special guests. Fox Sports, a few weeks after making a splash by announcing Tom Brady would be joining the network as an NFL analyst when his playing career is over, has confirmed its lead announcing talent for 2022.

TV’s “upfront” ad-sales market is starting to move — and earlier than expected.
Just days after the networks wrapped glitzy programming presentations to Madison Avenue executives, Walt Disney Co. is said to have written some business with at least one major media buying agency, according to three executives familiar with recent discussions. Disney is “ahead of the market,” one media buyer said. In the industry’s annual upfront process, U.S. TV networks try to sell the bulk of their commercial inventory ahead of their next cycle of programming.
One of these people indicated that Disney’s upfront conversations “are going very well” and that the company is “making significant progress,” and is seeing “avid demand” for entertainment programming, sports, live events and content aimed at diverse audiences.

This wasn’t supposed to be Joe Buck’s first assignment for ESPN.
The veteran sports announcer raised eyebrows earlier this year by jumping from his longtime roost at Fox Sports to the Disney sports giant, where he and colleague Troy Aikman are set to host “Monday Night Football.” On Thursday afternoon, however, Buck was doing something completely different. Here he was, sitting alongside golf analyst Michael Collins on ESPN2, watching Tiger Woods on the green at the 2022 PGA Championship and talking to baseball great Ken Griffey Jr. about his golf and baseball swings.
Even though the setting is relaxed and informal, it poses a challenge for Buck. “I have to remind myself the whole time it’s not what I typically do,” he says in an interview. “I have to kind of turn off the gene that I have that wants to be on top of all the action.

Even though the setting is relaxed and informal, it poses a challenge for Buck. “I have to remind myself the whole time it’s not what I typically do,” he says in an interview. “I have to kind of turn off the gene that I have that wants to be on top of all the action.

Updated with a report on the financial terms: Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady is due to set another record whenever he leaves the field for good. His deal to become the lead NFL analyst on Fox is reportedly worth 375 million over 10 years. It takes effect as soon as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback finally winds down his career.
The New York Post reported the salary figure, though Fox threw cold water on it in a statement.
“What has been reported isn’t an accurate description of the deal and we have not released details beyond what was disclosed on our quarterly earnings call,” the statement said.
Previously: Quarterback Tom Brady has been confirmed as Fox’s lead NFL analyst, with the job waiting for him whenever his playing career finally concludes.

Legendary football player Tom Brady will join Fox Sports as part of a multi-year deal once he ends his NFL career, lending the company a potential new boost after it lost mainstay announcers Joe Buck and Troy Aikman to ESPN.
The news was disclosed by Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch during an investor call. The executive said Brady’s arrival at Fox Sports remained uncertain, as the decision about when to walk off the playing field would be left up to the athlete. He is, however, expected to call NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, the Fox Sports announcer whose role was recently elevated after the exit of Buck and Aikman.
Brady “will not only call our biggest NFL games with Kevin Burkhardt, but will also serve as an ambassador for us, particularly with respect to client and promotional initiatives,” Murdoch said.

Melissa Stark clearly knows the value of staying in touch.
The veteran sportscaster served as the sideline reporter for “Monday Night Football” between 2000 and 2002, when she was just 26 and the game — then one of TV’s biggest weekly events — was still broadcast on ABC. She worked with everyone from the legendary TV executive Don Ohlmeyer to “Mnf” announcers like John Madden and Dennis Miller — and with Fred Gaudelli, the producer who would move on to work for NBC Sports and oversee “Sunday Night Football,” then all of NBC’s NFL coverage. With four young children at home, and having logged stints at ABC, NBC News’ “Today” and MSNBC, Stark in 2008 eventually chose to cut back on TV duties and focus on family. In 2011, she had the chance to take up new duties at NFL Network, and asked Gaudelli for his counsel on the move. “He has always been a mentor and a sounding board,...

There’s a new regular Joe calling baseball games on Fox.
Joe Davis, a veteran sportscaster who has been known on the West Coast for calling Los Angeles Dodger games and as a Fox Sports regular, will take over as the lead play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports’ Major League Baseball coverage. He succeeds Joe Buck, the longtime Fox baseball and football announcer who has moved to ESPN to work on “Monday Night Football.” Davis will join John Smoltz in the network’s lead baseball booth.
“If you had asked me when I was 10 what I wanted to do when I grew up, I would’ve told you ‘Call the World Series.’ So when I say this is a dream-come-true, I really mean it,” said Davis, in a statement. Davis and Smoltz, along with reporters Tom Verducci and Ken Rosenthal, are expected to call Fox’s coverage of the 2022 MLB All-Star Game,...

Al Michaels, considered the dean of NFL announcers, will helm Prime Video’s exclusive Thursday Night Football livestreams this fall, alongside ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit.
Amazon made the news official today, though it has been in the wind (at least the Michaels part) for months. The tech giant will kick off its 11-year rights deal on September 15, the first time a streaming platform will have a weekly NFL exclusive. While the company has not confirmed the price it paid for rights, numerous reports have pegged it at $1 billion a year. The weekly showcase of 15 regular-season games will add some potent fuel to Amazon’s burgeoning efforts to scale its video advertising business, across Prime Video, IMDb TV and Twitch.
Michaels, 77, had a 15-year run on NBC’s Sunday Night Football and before that became a national figure during his tenure at ABC, which encompassed Monday Night Football as well as baseball and other sports.

Fans of “Thursday Night Football” will next season hear one of TV sports’ most recognizable voices calling the games for a rather sizable upstart hoping to gain new yards off his play.
Michaels, who has offered play-by-play patter for “Monday Night Football” and “Sunday Night Football” since 1986, will lead a new effort by Amazon’s Prime Video, which has gained sole rights to telecast the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” in the fall. Starting Thursday, September 15, Michaels will team up with analyst Kirk Herbstreit, known for his college football prowess at ESPN, to lead coverage of the games as Amazon becomes a bigger player in TV sports rights — which have largely been the domain of traditional broadcasters. They will be part of a team that also includes Fred Gaudelli, the veteran “Sunday Night Football” producer who will remain part of the NBC Sports executive team. NBC is collaborating with Amazon in its production.

Veteran sportscaster Mike Tirico will join NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” booth next fall, pairing up with analyst Cris Collinsworth in the latest shake up among the announcers who call the plays of TV’s most-watched sport.
Tirico fills a spot left vacant by the departure of Al Michaels, who is expected to join Amazon to call “Thursday Night Football.”
“When Mike joined NBC Sports in 2016, it was our plan for him to become our primetime Olympics host and the play-by-play voice of Sunday Night Football,” said Pete Bevacqua, chairman of NBC Sports, in a statement. “We are excited to have Mike join Cris Collinsworth full-time in the booth this season.”
NBC confirms speculation about the future of its “Sunday Night Football” booth with an NFL meeting slated to take place later this week. The show has long been Michaels’ roost. But his contract ended after the network’s Super Bowl broadcast earlier this year,...
