The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

It truly was the end of an era when "Mad Men" signed off for good on May 17, and while the series finale divided some fans (did Don really achieve enlightenment? Was the Coke jingle meant to be sincere or cynical?), one thing everyone can agree on is that they wished some more fan favorite characters and storylines made the final cut. Now, creator Matthew Weiner has revealed that he, too, had a wishlist of people and things he wanted to feature in the final episodes -- and some of the items that were omitted from the series are heartbreaking.
At an event for the Writers Guild Foundation in Los Angeles Thursday night, Weiner appeared alongside "Mad Men" writers Janet Leahy, Erin Levy, Tom Smuts, Lisa Albert, Robert Towne, Jonathan Igla, Carly Wray, and Josh Weltman, and discussed said list, which Entertainment Weekly writer Anthony Breznican photographed and shared on Twitter...

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

"The Social Network's" climb to Oscar victory was put to a halt by the Producers Guild, giving its much-coveted Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures to Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech!" (Full list of PGA Awards nominees and winners below)
Thus, making this one of the most unpredictable Oscars in recent years. Will the unclear antagonists and protagonists of "The Social Network" triumph over the "against all odds" story of "The King's Speech"?

The King’s Speech won best-produced film from the Producers Guild of America on Saturday, a great courage to its Oscar ambitions in an awards season so far much swollen by The Social Network. On the same night the organization praised Scott Rudin, the primary producer on ” The Social Network,” with a lifetime achievement award. Other films in line for the best-produced movie of the year were Black Swan, The Fighter and Toy Story 3, which won best-produced animated film.
The Producers Guild of America represents more than 4,500 producers nationwide, prepared for its 22nd annual Producers Guild Awards — set for Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.
Producers Guild and other industry honors could improve Oscar chances because many members of the PGA and WGA also belong to the Academy, whose members cast votes for the Oscars. In the last three years, the Producers Guild and the Academy have agreed on best picture winners.

The King’S Speech became the reigning monarch at the 22nd Annual Producers Guild Awards and usurped the Oscar-frontrunner’s crown from critics’ favorite The Social Network. Is it an upset? Hollywoodnews.com: Nominees for the 22nd annual Producers Guild Awards were announced this morning, and if you have been paying even the slightest bit of attention during the awards race, you could guess the 10 titles picked for Best Picture, otherwise known as the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.
Regular nominees like “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” led the list, paired alongside the likes of “127 Hours,” “Black Swan,” “Inception,” “The Fighter,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “The Town,” “Toy Story 3” and “True Grit.”
If there’s a big winner, it’s Ben Affleck’s “The Town,” which also found its way into the Top 10 nominated by the Broadcast Film Critics Association for their Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, which air Friday, Jan. 14. Does this mean it will make the cut when the Academy picks 10 later this year?

"Modern Family" and "30 Rock", which have won Emmys, will be up against each other in comedy series and have each received two nods for episodic category. Meanwhile, "Breaking Bad" takes a nod in drama field and two additional episodic nominations.
AMC's "The Walking Dead" is vying for new series prize, battling "Boardwalk Empire", "Justified", "Treme" and "Men of a Certain Age" along the way. "Empire" in particular is also nominated for drama series against older and more prominent shows like "Mad Men" and "Dexter".

It's fitting that when Don Draper attempts to organize his thoughts, he does so with a pad and pen rather than Roger's confessional cassettes. Don's writing--reminding him of those 250-word essays he wrote before dropping out of high school-- is part of a concerted effort to gain some clarity in his life, to unburden his mind even as the last vestiges of his true self slip away in the wake of Anna's death. While Don might look the part of the carefree summer man, the internal struggle raging within him is anything but placid. Throughout this week's episode of Mad Men ("The Summer Man"), written by Lisa Albert, Janet Leahy, and Matthew Weiner and directed by Phil Abraham, we see glimpses of a very different Don Draper, one painfully aware of his own mortality--hence the look of horror at his actual physical condition while swimming--and of the coping mechanisms in his life.

The Writers Guild of America honored The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air at their ceremony on Saturday night, firmly establishing the films as front-runners in their respective Oscar categories.
Mark Boal certainly deserves the accolades after embedding himself with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Baghdad in 2004 and turning his journalist findings into a dramatic original screenplay. In his speech Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for supporting “an unpopular story about an unpopular war that has now lasted twice as long as WWII with no end in sight.”
Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner picked up the prize for their adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, and Mark Monroe won for the moving documentary The Cove.
The WGA Awards are a somewhat reliable indicator of the Academy Awards. ”Original Screenplay” has matched 10 out of the last 15 years, and “Adapted” has lined up 11 of 15, including Milk and Slumdog Millionaire last year.

"30 Rock" may have lost the Best TV Comedy title to "Glee" at Screen Actors Guild Awards this weekend, but it manages to take home Producers Guild Awards on Sunday, January 24. The award of Danny Thomas Producer of the Year goes to the comedy's Lorne Michaels, Tina Fey and co., after they beat producers of "Californication", "Entourage", "Weeds" and "The Office".
This is the third year in a row, "30 Rock" claims the title. Like last year, Michaels and Fey share the honor with Marci Klein, David Miner, Robert Carlock, Jeff Richmond, Don Scardino, and Jerry Kupfer.
Also coming up as a consecutive winner is CBS' "60 Minutes" which grabs the Nonfiction Television award for the fourth time. Another repeat is by "The Colbert Report" which wins its third Live Entertainment and Competition Television.

Summit's battle-hardened "The Hurt Locker" scored another victory Sunday night as it took home the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures at the 21st annual PGA Awards.
The presentation capped the Producers Guild of America's ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium.
The prize was shared by producers Kathryn Bigelow (who also directed), Mark Boal (the film's screenwriter), Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro. Bigelow thanked the PGA, saying "no other group of filmmakers could so understand the logistical challenges of making a film -- particularly a tough little war film -- in the middle of the summer in the Middle East."
If the producers of the 82nd annual Academy Awards were hoping that the best picture Oscar race would develop some suspense, they have received the scenario they wanted.
"Locker" has picked up numerous critics awards, and two weekends ago it won the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

Slumdog Millionaire continued its winning streak this awards season, with Simon Beaufoy winning the 2009 Writers Guild of America award this evening for adapted screenplay. Dustin Lance Black won the award for best original screenplay for Milk. Slumdog has already won DGA, SAG, PGA and Golden Globe awards, and is a multi-award favorite for the Oscars. Milk has won SAG and PGA awards and is also a strong Oscar contender in multiple categories.
On the television side, awards went to the writers of Mad Men (drama), 30 Rock (comedy), Recount and John Adams in long-form categories, and In Treatment, Breaking Bad, and The Simpsons in various other fields. Controversially, among other awards was one for videogame writing (to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed). Some publishers declined to submit their titles for consideration, viewing the award as primarily an organizing tool for a guild seeking to gain a foothold in a non-unionized sector.

HBO led all TV networks in attracting nominations in the 60th anniversary WGA Awards, fetching two noms for dramatic series writing and three for comedy series writing.
In the dramatic series category, HBO's The Sopranos and The Wire are joined by Showtime's Dexter, NBC's Friday Night Lights and AMC's Mad Men.
In the comedy series category, HBO attracted noms for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Flight of the Conchords. Also nominated in the category are NBC's The Office and 30 Rock.
Conchords also attracted a nom in the category of new TV series, where it joins Mad Men, FX's Damages, ABC's Pushing Daisies and Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program.
The WGA's recent news releases have dealt almost solely with its ongoing strike against some of the same companies figuring in the WGA Awards. The guild had planned to release its TV and radio noms today but released the information late Wednesday without previous notice.
"In order to maximize press coverage for the 2008 Writers Guild Awards as well as not compete with Golden Globes' nominees ... we made the decision to go out a day earlier than previously announced," WGA West spokesman Gregg Mitchell said.
Globe noms were released this morning.
The WGA Awards are set for Feb. 9, with simultaneous ceremonies planned at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles and the Hudson Theatre in New York.
