Lydia Deetz, her stepmother Delia and her daughter Astrid stand over a casket, the burial services in progress. We can barely make out who the funeral is for but there he is on the headstone: Charles Deetz. While Charles was once part of the Beetlejuice sequel when the ghost with the most was to “go Hawaiian”, he was written entirely out of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice…for reasons that will soon be obvious.
Despite the original’s and sequel’s dalliances with the afterlife, Jeffrey Jones will not be in the Beetlejuice sequel– or pretty much any other legitimate movie – following his disgraceful tumble from his small but reliable spotlight. Perfectly fitting into prestigious period pieces and goofball funny flicks. Jones is a Golden Globe nominee with consistent work – a mix of villain, comedic and at times patriarchal roles, Jeffrey Jones went from Ferris Bueller baddie to Who’s Your Caddy?

Paul Bettany has joined Sky’s upcoming limited series “Amadeus,” which tells the story of famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
“The White Lotus” star Will Sharpe was previously announced in the role of Mozart. Bettany will play Italian composer Antonio Salieri, Mozart’s longtime rival. The limited series hails from “Giri/Haji” collaborators Joe Barton and Julian Farino and is reimagined from Peter Shaffer’s award-winning stage play.
According to a press release, “Barton’s adaptation will expand and interrogate the mythic rivalry of the two composers. Hero of his own story but villain to history, Salieri’s envy turns vengeful as he uses any means necessary to thwart Mozart and protect his position in the establishment.”
“Amadeus” follows 25-year-old Amadeus (Sharpe) as he arrives to the bustling musical hub of Vienna at the end of the 18th century. “Recently unemployed and without the management of his father, Amadeus finds an...

Will Jeffrey Jones appear in Tim Burton’s hugely anticipated Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice?
That’s the question on the mind of eagle-eyed fans of the upcoming Warner Bros. film’s trailer, who noticed a glimpse of the actor on a headstone in a funeral scene. But a rep for Jones confirms to The Hollywood Reporter that the actor does not appear in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
The funeral is attended by Catherine O’Hara (playing Delia Deetz, second wife of Jones’ Charles Deetz in the original film), Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz, Charles’ daughter with his first, deceased wife) and Jenna Ortega (a newcomer to the franchise, who plays Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s teenage daughter).
In Beetlejuice, Charles is a big-city real estate developer who buys a Connecticut home after the previous owners — the Maitlands, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis — die in a car accident.

In 1984, Milos Forman brought Amadeus to the big screen in an epic tale of secrets, scandals and buffoonery amongst the world of esteemed musical composer Wolfgang Mozart. The film was based on the 1979 stage play by Peter Shaffer. The UK broadcast network, Sky, has been developing a new TV series adaptation of the play in the past few years, and the ball is now rolling with the casting of the story’s central figure. Deadline has revealed that White Lotus actor Will Sharpe has now been cast as Wolfgang Mozart in the Sky original series.
The synopsis of the show, per Deadline, reads, “Adapted from Peter Shaffer’s stage play, Amadeus is set within the musical hub of bustling Vienna at the end of the 18th century, as the 25-year-old titular character arrives in the city no longer a child and determined to carve his own path. Though Robert Downey Jr. was at the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival to accept the Maltin Modern Master Award, the Best Supporting Actor frontrunner used a significant amount of his time on stage to fête his “Oppenheimer” co-star Cillian Murphy, who was in attendance.
“It’s been very seldom in my career that I’ve realized that I was born to play a supporting role in favor of somebody else rightfully having the spotlight,” Downey said before introducing the current Best Actor nominee to the stage to share some remarks about their time working together on the Christopher Nolan film. “I was afforded a deeply humiliating clinic on masterful acting in exceptional cinematic experiences.”
About Murphy, he said “I’ve always known him and always respected him and loved his work and all of my peers know he’s great, but he had yet to have a vehicle where he...

The most audacious aspect of Max’s “Julia” (now in its second season) is that Julia Child might not be the most accomplished real-life character in it. That might be Bebe Neuwirth’s Avis DeVoto, who, with husband Bernard, helped save the national forests from the U.S. government. Or maybe it’s Judith Jones (Fiona Glascott), who pulled a book out of a slush pile and thus became responsible for publishing “The Diary of Anne Frank,” among other accomplishments that include the English translations of Sartre and Camus. Then again, it might be Blanche Knopf (Judith Light), the powerhouse publisher who co-founded Knopf with her husband and helped elevate the mystery genre to high art by publishing everyone from Dashiell Hammett to Ross Macdonald.

"Oppenheimer" is huge. It's one of Christopher Nolan's most massive movies, a sprawling epic that covers the life and times of J. Robert Oppenheimer, father of the atomic bomb. The film spans several years of Oppenheimer's life, zeroing in on specific time periods — specifically the lead-up to the building of the bomb, and then the aftermath when Oppenheimer's career was destroyed due to his leftist leanings. As I wrote in my review, "Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' is nothing short of extraordinary. In what might be his magnum opus, Nolan has meticulously crafted a biopic that feels like a thriller. He's also managed to find a way to make 3 hours of people sitting in rooms talking at each other downright exciting."
Like all movies, "Oppenheimer" draws on films that came before it. It owes a debt or two to Oliver Stone's "JFK," in how it's a star-studded, 3-hour epic about grave decisions,...

In 1985, Miloš Forman’s screen adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s stage play Amadeus swept the Academy Awards, winning eight Oscars, including best picture. In that acclaimed film, F Murray Abraham’s Antonio Salieri seethed at the divine gift bestowed upon Tom Hulce’s “vulgar” Mozart – a rapscallion whom God appears to have mischievously made his instrument on Earth.
In the new biographical drama Chevalier, from writer Stefani Robinson (a Writers Guild of America and Emmy award winner for the TV series Atlanta) and director Stephen Williams, the polarities are reversed, with Mozart finding his celebrated genius overshadowed by that of a rival. Writer Stefani Robinson is an admitted overachiever. In 2016, on the strength of a spec script, “Lola and the Afterlife,” about the ghost of dead girl stuck in limbo in Boston, she landed a meeting with Donald Glover on FX series “Atlanta” and was promptly hired for the Season 1 writer’s room. The day before she turned up for work, she had been grabbing coffee as an agent’s assistant.
She was the youngest member and only woman in the writers room, joining a team who already knew each other. But it was Robinson who landed a writing Emmy nomination for Season 1; the show took home two WGA awards. While she continued on “Atlanta” until the 2022 Season 4 finale, executive producer Paul Simms also took her with him to co-showrun 2019 TV series “What We Do in the Shadows,” based on the quirky vampire film by Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi.

Director Stephen Williams’ new film, Chevalier, starts with a concert that shatters any preconceived notions audiences might have about classical music. Staid and unexciting, it is not, when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Joseph Prowen) is introduced at the height of his fame, on tour and performing in Paris. The audience loves the ebbs and the flows of the sound from the orchestra, and at the end of the concert, Mozart asks the audience for requests. It is then that a Black man who we later find out is Joseph Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) stands up and asks to play onstage with Mozart. Suddenly, via Bologne’s rendition, one of Mozart’s own compositions is filled with a new energy and flair. There’s dueling violins and sensational solos as Mozart tries to keep up with Bologne. But he cannot. Bologne’s confidence is more than youthful egotism; he is clearly a...

Baz Luhrmann’s movie Elvis became a smash hit. Despite this, it wasn’t the first or only movie with a similar style or subject matter. Here are a few films you might want to watch if you loved the movie.

Luhrmann’s Elvis is celebratory in many ways. It also portrays the subject of Elvis and race in the most positive light possible. That’s to be expected given that the film was produced by Priscilla Presley.
The King is a documentary that looks at Elvis and race from a more critical perspective. It uses the “Can’t Help Falling in Love” singer’s legacy as a metaphor for the history of the United States. It features interviews with many notable figures, including Van Jones, Chuck D from Public Enemy, and others. The King didn’t get much attention upon release, but it...

It took 36 hours for producer Gail Berman to get to the Elvis set in September of 2020. It was a mini-odyssey that involved flying from Los Angeles to New York and then through Dubai and on to Brisbane, Australia, where she had to quarantine for two weeks due to then-strict Covid-19 protocols. But the wait didn’t bother Berman, since by then she had been trying to get the movie made for more than a decade and had already endured a production shutdown due to a global pandemic that saw one of the film’s leads become the early face of the then-nascent coronavirus. (More on that later.)

In the latest THR Presents, powered by Vision Media, Tyler Coates moderated a conversation with Elvis’ re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, cinematographer Mandy Walker, producer Gail Berman and director, producer and co-writer Baz Luhrmann, with an introduction by Priscilla Presley.
“One thing I can say is that biopics, or ideas [for them], have come to me a bit. But I’ve never been about doing a biopic, per se,” Luhrmann explained about the incarnation of the idea for his film. “I’m a great aficionado of the way Shakespeare takes a historical figure, Richard the III or something, and explores a larger idea while revealing the humanity of the character. The modern version of that I often think of as Amadeus. I really wasn’t into Mozart back then, however 100 years ago that was. But that incredible story, Salieri and Mozart, is about jealousy.”

The musical "Annie" has a special place in my heart that sparks joy. In that same vein, Tim Curry has a special place in my heart that inspires fear. Picture six-year-old me hearing Tim Curry's Rooster Hannigan and running away from the Vcr screaming because I recognized the voice of Pennywise in Stephen King's "It." Childhood traumas aside, the man did great work at capturing that rapscallion energy that Daniel Francis "Rooster" Hannigan is supposed to have in the 1982 film version of "Annie."
For those unfamiliar, the character of Rooster Hannigan is a con artist, usually played with a level of charm and sleaze that — especially in a theatrical setting — can be easily perceived in the nosebleed seats. In "Annie," Curry as Rooster worked alongside Broadway legend Bernadette Peters, who portrayed the ditzy blonde character, Lily St. Regis, and the incomparable comedic mastermind, Carol Burnett, who played the ever-grouchy,...

This story about “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann first appeared in “The Race Begins” issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
He started with Elvis as metaphor and wound up staring at Elvis the man. At least that’s how Baz Luhrmann describes the journey with “Elvis”, his extravagant semi-biopic about the poor kid from Tupelo who shocked the world, became the king of rock ‘n’ roll, got it all, squandered it all on drugs, lethargy and bad movies and, every so often, got it all back.
An over-the-top two-hour-and-39 minute musical epic featuring Austin Butler’s uncanny recreation of Elvis Presley and Tom Hanks’ curious take on his brilliantly manipulative and predatory manager, Colonel Tom Parker, “Elvis” is big and bold and silly and messy and kind of wonderful, taking liberties with Elvis’ story but selling it all so dramatically that it made 286 million in theaters after its Cannes Film Festival premiere.

This week on TheWrap-Up podcast, TheWrap sits down with “Elvis” director, co-writer and producer Baz Luhrmann to discuss his epic biopic, while TheWrap’s founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman talks about the week’s biggest headlines and stories with podcast guest co-host and TheWrap assistant managing editor for audience Adam Chitwood.
The interview with Baz Luhrmann touches on why he wanted to tell Elvis Presley’s story in the first place. “I took it on not to do a biopic but I always thought Elvis would be this great canvas to explore America, because he’s sort of at the center of everything in the 50s, 60s and 70s,” Luhrmann said.
The “Moulin Rouge!” filmmaker also revealed that the project started to coalesce when he learned more about Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker, played in the film by Tom Hanks, and drew inspiration from “Amadeus” to make him a major part of the story.
