Celebrating messiahs from the underbelly of any society is nothing new. Nevertheless, there has been a serious dearth of noir films in the history of Bangla cinema. Every time the city is seen in cinema, it remains visually stunning. Yet, surprisingly, the underdogs are carefully swept under the carpet. Under the project of the beautification of the city, there has been no place for slums, everyday violence, brothels and other kinds of chotoloks (downtrodden). Yet, without them, the State and the bhodrolok community, who write the history of any decade from above, would be a sham. Bratya Basu's “Hubba” (Don/ 2024/133mns) depicts the life and rise of Hubba Shyamal aka Bimal (his screen name) and the volatile nexus of politics within the underworld. In other words, it is a biopic on the notorious gangster Hubba Shyamal in the 1990s Hooghly, played by popular Bangladeshi actor Mosharraf Karim.

‘83
Starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone , Pankaj Tripathi
Directed by Kabir Khan
Good Lords! By the time the climactic photo-finish match at the posh Lords stadium unravels in all its historically astute glory, the audience is so invested in the film it feels like the entire slab of sports history has been effortlessly converted into the crisp currency of cinematic history.
You don’t really have to be a cricket fanatic to understand how important the 1983 World cup victory was for India and Indians. Even Mrs Indira Gandhi, then ruling country with iron hands, realized how vital it was for our boys to bring that Cup back.
Somewhere in the course of the undulating though well-balanced and authentic storytelling the formidable Mrs G is heard telling her cowering cabinet, “Let there be a television set in every home to watch the World Cup so that the nation’s attention can be diverted from political issues.

Asian cinema is not exactly known for its sport movies, which, maybe with the exception of boxing lately, are quite scarce. Mumbai, Nov 21 (Ians) Actress Vidya Malavade fondly recalls working with Shah Rukh Khan in the Shimit Amin directorial, Chak De! India, saying he will always be Coach Sir for all the girls in the cast of the 2007 sports drama.
"For all the girls who were a part of that film, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan will always be Coach Sir. He took so much care of us while we were shooting for that film. He never made us feel that we are any less than him," she said.
"I think that is just a way he is. If you work with him or when you meet him, he just puts you on a pedestal and you feel you are floating! He is extremely charming and intelligent. I think I would have done something right in this birth or my last birth that I got an opportunity to share screen space with him.

Class Of ‘83 (Netflix)
Starring Bobby Deol, Anup Soni, Joy Sengupta
Directed by Atul Sabharwal
In how many films from Prakash Mehra’s Zanjeer and Shimit Amin’s Ab Tak Chappan to Mahesh Manjrekar’s Kurukshetra and Prabhudheva’s Wanted have we seen the cop-hero battling the dreaded ‘System’ from the outside ?
As far as originality goes Class Of 83 scores poorly. It looks like an encore of dozens anti-establishment angry-cop films we have seen over the years, when in truth Class Of 83 is The original Dirty Harry of Indian cinema. In the 1971 game-changing cops film , Clint Eastwood throws his police badge in the muddy water and deals with a rampageous killer as he deems fit.
Things are not that simple for super-cop Vijay Singh (played with suspicious stoicism by Bobby Deol). Unlike ‘Dirty’Harry Eastwood, Deol has to play the law enforcer within the rulebook. Also he is not a...

Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran
Starring John Abraham, Boman Irani, Anuja Sathe, Diana Penty
Directed by Abhishek Sharma
If good intentions made good cinema then every propaganda film by Films Division would be a classic. In the absence of a hefty grip and a budget to rev up the key sequences pertaining to the historical nucleur explosions Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran ends up more as a fable of one man’s heroism than the saga of a nation that woke up to a nucleur dawn.
The facts are twisted into commercial shapes including a flashpoint button-on-the-fingertip climax where the film’s editor runs with breathless bravado from pillar to post trying to keep the audiences’ interest alive.
But all in vain. Parmanu is like a promised havoc that never goes beyond a wound-up whimper. The film’s opening shows the bureaucrat-hero Ashwat Rana grappling with a roomful of bored...

There aren’t too many competent sports films in our country, and certainly not too many that can claim to penetrate the hearts and minds of the sports and the sportsperson. Shimit Amin’s Chak De, in spite of its rabid rabble-rousing nationalism, managed to give us a clear and coherent portrait of the sport and the player…
Director Sudha Kongara Prasad gives us an unusual film where the stereotypical character of the cantankerous boxer meets his match when he picks up a foul-mouthed uncouth boxer for training into championship.
There is nothing in the plot to suggest even a whiff of the unexpected. Mumbai, May 30: The rumours that Shimit Amin is directing a film for Mira Nair and Yashraj Films are unfounded. At the moment he is stepping back to let his wife Megha Rawamswamy direct a film.
Megha, who had co-written the script of Bejoy Nambiar's "Shaitaan", is directing a film that her intense husband would never dream of making.
"It's a teen horror flick entitled 'Girls' on the lines of Peter Weir's 'Picnic At Hanging Rock', but far more gruesome and targeted at a young market. Viacom 18 are producing it," said a source.
Shimit has directed films ike "Ab Tak Chhappan", "Chak De! India" and "Rocket Singh: Salesman.

The dubbing does subject the content to some tonal drubbing. And one wishes the Indian distributors had just let the characters speak the way they felt. Misguided vocalization cannot take away from the power and inner strengths of Mira Nair’s newest work.
The abject isolation of an individual as he or she grapples with the shifting emotional and cultural dynamics of a society that doesn’t have much patience with dilemmas of the diaspora, is a recurrent theme in Mira Nair’s remarkable oeuvre.
It could be that sassy street boy Krishna in Salaam Bombay peering resentfully into the rolled-up windows of the rich and the privileged as they whisk away his unrealized dreams. It could the high-flying Amelia Earhart kissing the clouds as she flies that plane in splendid solitude in Amelia.

Mira Nair recalls the long and arduous journey of making The Reluctant Fundamentalist in a conversation with Nandita Dutta
Multicultural filmmaker Mira Nair known for making films that win both commercial and critical success might seem to have the best of both worlds, in every sense. For instance, Monsoon Wedding made her the first woman director to receive a Golden Lion at Venice in 2001 as well as raked up more than 30 million Usd at the box office. But her latest film-The Reluctant Fundamentalist-was realized through a long and arduous journey, full of ups and downs, just like any independent filmmaker in any part of the world would have it. Investors came and disappeared, budgets were slashed and the project fell apart several times.
The Reluctants
“I have always managed to finance every film I want to make. It’s not easy each time but it’s not as tough as this.

Mira Nair delivers a masterful film that rides high on the minimal expectations of the audiences and turns each scene into a cruel exercise of meeting as well as challenging these expectations, writes Shekhar Deshpande
Riz Ahmed in Mira Nair’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”
The events of 9-11 have changed cinema. These changes have been far ranging, from narrative construction and movement to the aesthetics of urgency. The past before and since that day suddenly contracts to illuminate that fateful moment while images pace at the speed that intensifies the here-and-now which, incidentally, tends to be everywhere. It is now impossible to see Muslims and the Eastern cultures without the tinted lenses that all spectators have come to wear, where each gesture is ridden with risk until it has had a chance to prove otherwise. Any film that claims to have “fundamentalist” in its title is likely to invite a...

After Shimit Amin who made Ab Tak Chappan for Ram Gopal Varma and then migrated to Yash Raj Films to make the successful Chak De and the dud Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year, another Ram Gopal Varma protege Atul Sabharwal is all set to make a big-budgeted film for Yash Raj. The film titled Aurangzeb will feature Arjun Kapoor in a double role. However, the really interesting part of the project is the debutant director's slanted association with Arjun Kapoor. Sabharwal wrote Arjun's uncle Anil Kapoor's murder thriller My Wife's Murder which Ram Gopal Varma produced. Says a source, "That's when Arjun, then a child, vaguely got to know Atul. To be now directed by him just shows that its small world .And the world of movies is even smaller. Atul wanted to direct his own film for Ram Gopal Varma. But Ramu somehow never got around giving him a chance.
