Creatives behind The Simpsons shared new details about Season 33 on Saturday, revealing that it will feature a musical premiere, an expanded “Treehouse of Horror” episode and more.
During a Comic-Con@Home panel teasing the new season, executive producer Matt Selman described premiere episode “The Star of the Backstage” as the “most musical episode we’ve ever done”—”like a Broadway musical of an episode with wall to wall music.”
The season’s first episode will feature an assortment of original songs. Actress Kristen Bell (Frozen) will handle singing for Marge, the Simpsons matriarch played by Julie Kavner.
EP Al Jean later announced that this year’s “Treehouse of Horror Xxxii” episode will feature five segments, rather than the traditional set of three, presenting one of the five to the virtual Comic-Con audience.
He subsequently touched on two other upcoming episodes. One may see romance come to stick in the life...

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Saturday, July 25. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22, Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
Saturday’s events include (all times are Pacific Daylight):
10–11 a.m.
“Cosmos: Possible Worlds” — featuring the host and creators of the Fox docu-series, including host Neil deGrasse Tyson, visual effects supervisor Jeffrey A. Okun, executive producer and director Ann Druyan,...

America’s favorite nuclear family has joined Disney, and it’s a surprisingly good fit. “The Simpsons” made its first-ever appearance at the D23 Expo on Saturday to inaugurate a new era of fox and mouse living in harmony after the acquisition of Fox by Disney in March.
On the panel for the D23 presentation in Anaheim, Calif., were Groening, executive producers Al Jean, Matt Selman, supervising director Mike B. Anderson, and stars Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson) and Yeardley Smith (the voice fo Lisa Simpsons), who also performed moderating duties.
Smith, wearing a tiara befitting her new Disney princess status, opened with a touching tribute to Russi Taylor, voice of Minnie Mouse and Martin Prince on “The Simpsons.” “Heaven is a lot more giggly right now. Russi, cheers to you,” said Smith.

One of the cool perks of having Disney buy up all the properties we love is that when we subscribe to Disney’s streaming service, or attend the Disney fan convention, D23, it means we get all the things we love in the same place.
One of those things we love that is new to the fold is The Simpsons. Disney reported that Matt Groening, Al Jean, Matt Selman, Mike B. Anderson, Nancy Cartwright, and Yeardley Smith will be in attendance, including a Simpsons panel, as well as autograph signings.
The panel will take place on Saturday, August 24th, at 10:00am in the D23 Expo Arena. A Simpsons collectible exclusive will be available to everyone in attendance. Will you be there?!

“It” has captured the dark side of the imaginations of moviegoers everywhere, and now, thanks to two fans, Pennywise is getting an anime makeover. This reimagining of the famous scene where Pennywise pulls Georgie into the gutter began as an image drawn by Mike Anderson of the clown holding the boy’s paper boat. Anderson’s art quickly went viral and inspired Kevin Duran, a freelance graphic designer, to provide voiceover for the image. After four weekends in theaters, “It” has grossed $291 million domestically and $553 million worldwide. This week, it will become only the fourth R-Rated movie to gross $300 million.

“It” has set several box-office records, and there will be a sequel in fall 2019. In the meantime, those obsessed with the newest adaptation of Stephen King’s novel can avail themselves of an anime designed by Mike Anderson (also known as Mikuloctopus) and animated by Kevin Duran.

“Besides the fact that I thought the new Pennywise design already had a very ‘anime’ feel to it, I thought the concepts and subject matter of Stephen King’s book would be perfect for anime,” Anderson told Entertainment Weekly.
“There seem to be fewer limits in anime. Crazy concepts and unique storytelling are almost expected. The King novel delves into mythologies and settings that a live-action movie may not have the time or budget to fully realize. And even if they could, it may not appeal to mass audiences.

Not enough people know what a Gold Star parent is, says Charles Strange; but as one of them, he is dedicated to helping other family members of fallen service members.
A “Gold Star” in military parlance is someone who lost a close family member to combat. Through his Michael Strange Foundation, Strange holds workshops aiming to help people who endured this deeply painful tragedy.
When a service member is killed in action, Strange says, the families at first receive a wellspring of social and spiritual support. As the months progress, however, the families increasingly are left to deal alone with their devastating losses.

When you're "The Simpsons" and you've been around for 27 seasons, and close to 600 episodes, doing something new is almost impossible. For the most part, the show's better latter-day episodes(*) mix and match stories the show has done a half dozen times or more in the past, finding amusing and/or poignant variations on old themes. Last week's Maggie subplot, for instance, featuring the triumphant return of Spider-Pig, had more than a little in common with the Oscar-nominated "Simpsons" short "The Longest Daycare," while the delightful "Cue Detective" episode from two weeks ago was cooked up from ingredients used in many past food-related episodes. (*) And, yes, the series is still capable of doing very good, and at times, great, episodes even if it's not with the frequency of the first decade. We picked out some of the better recent installments in the later installments of our guide to Fxx's Every "Simpsons" Ever marathon.

Coffy/Foxy Brown/Friday Foster
Coffy and Foxy Brown written and directed by Jack Hill
Friday Foster written by Orville H. Hampton, directed by Arthur Marks
USA, 1973/1974/1975
Olive Films recently released several Blaxploitation titles on Blu-ray for the first time, all on the same day. This included the Fred Williamson-starring Hammer, from 1972, as well as three Pam Grier films: Coffy (1973), Foxy Brown (1974), and Friday Foster (1975). Hammer isn’t a particular favorite, but these latter three were most welcome, especially Coffy, which is quite possibly the greatest of all Blaxploitation features, even better than the more popular Shaft (1971) and Super Fly (1972). As much as anything, these three releases are notable for showcasing Grier at her finest during a period of immensely enjoyable work and exceptional productivity—15 films from her minor debut in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) to Friday Foster. Around these films, she also starred in several other...

Anybody who lives in the UK will have seen at least some of Logan’s Run before as Michael Anderson’s 1976 film seems to be on television almost constantly. Hop around Freeview now and you’ll probably find it hiding out between the repeats of Come Dine With Me.
There’s been talk of a new adaptation for years, with Bryan Singer and Nicolas Winding Refn both developing screenplays from George Clayton Johnson and William F. Nolan’s original novel. Refn was going to cast Ryan Gosling in the lead role, but as you’ll have noticed, that didn’t happen.
But future dystopias are like, so totally in right now, and especially those with young female leads. No surprise, then, to see a headline on The Tracking Board that reads “The Logan’s Run remake will now have a female lead.”
From the position of sheer box-office, it makes perfect sense to me.

A California high school basketball coach has been accused of poor sportsmanship after his team beat another 161 to … 2. Arroyo Valley High girls' coach Michael Anderson was suspended for two games following the rout against Bloomington High last week and now faces criticism for running up the score, CBS Los Angeles reports. "The game just got away from me," Anderson told the San Bernardino Sun on Friday. "I didn't play any starters in the second half," he added. "I didn't expect them to be that bad. I'm not trying to embarrass anybody." This isn't the first time Arroyo Valley has so thoroughly dominated a matchup.

If I had to pick my favorite novel of all time, it would probably be "1984". I, like most people, picked up George Orwell's tale of a totalitarian government in high school, and I was hooked from the famous opening line: It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. If that does not get you hooked, I don't know what can. Orwell's view on a state of constant surveillance is so specific that the two previous film adaptations, Michael Anderson's in 1956 and Michael Radford's in 1984 (starring John Hurt), have struggled to fully capture it. They are not terrible movies, by any means, but they are working with such a dense, patient source material I think is very difficult to translate. amz asin="0451524934" size="small"Well, Big Brother is going to get another chance to scare people on the big screen. Above: Italian poster for Confidential Agent (Herman Shumlin, USA, 1945). Artist: Luigi Martinati (1893-1984).
The most popular poster I’ve posted on Tumblr in the past three months—and actually the second most “liked” poster I’ve posted in the three years I’ve been doing this—was this Italian design by the great Luigi Martinati for a lesser known Lauren Bacall vehicle, but one in which the late star was unusually front and center. (You can see more of Bacall’s posters here.)
The rest of the top twenty are a wild variety of old (three for films from the 1920s, no less) and new (two 2014 releases). I was especially pleased to see Dorothea Fischer-Nosbisch’s superb 1967 design for a Festival of Young German Film get such attention. A lot of other design greats are featured: Saul Bass, the Stenberg brothers, Macario Gomez, Karl Oskar Blase and Josef Fenneker. And...

[Spoiler Alert: Do not read until you have watched Sunday night's episode of The Simpsons, titled “Clown in the Dumps.”] Say a prayer — Jewish, preferably—for Rabbi Hyman Krustofski, who passed away Sunday night on the season premiere of The Simpsons. The stern, principled father of Krusty the Clown (voiced by Jackie Mason, who won an Emmy in 1992 for the role), expired while telling his down-and-out son who was in the throes of a comedy career crisis, "If you want to know my honest opinion of you, you've always been... eh." The poignant father-child story, which prompted Lisa to fret that Homer would be next to go, ended a yearlong mystery over which character would meet his/her demise. EW...

Due to glorious press release timing, 20th Century Fox TV has landed a separate story for its Comic-Con 2014 schedule, even though several of the shows were previously announced in my FX/History Comic-Con 2014 story. Showtime, however, was less lucky and its lone Comic-Con 2014 panel has been bundled into this story along with the 20th Century Fox panels. Tens of millions of fans from around the world voted in the first ever YouTube Music Awards. From October 21 through the start of the show at 6Pm Et on Sunday, November 3, viewers were encouraged to cast their ballots by sharing official Ytma nomination videos across Google+, Twitter, and Facebook. The artist behind the video with the most “votes” in each of the six categories then went on to claim the title of YouTube Music Award Winner and receive a heavy-looking YouTube Play Button. Fans also had a say in the nominees of those six categories. The artists and videos nominated in the YTMAs represented the “highest levels of YouTube fan engagement, including views, likes, shares, comments, and subscriptions.” One aspect of the YouTube Music Awards in which the fans did not have a voice, however, was the comments. At least not on YouTube. YouTube disabled the ability to comment on the Ytma live stream,...

It's a love story of the digital age. "Glee's" Naya Rivera is engaged to rapper Big Sean (real name Sean Michael Anderson), her rep confirms to Just Jared, after dating for just six months -- and the two met on Twitter.
"I had followed him and he sent me a little message like, 'I'm a fan.' I Tweeted that I followed him, I was trying to get his attention. We went to dinner and the rest is history," Rivera tells Access Hollywood about how she met Big Sean.
Rivera just showed off her gorgeous engagement ring at the Hollywood Hot List party for Latina magazine in Hollywood -- you can see it in the inset above. Woo woo, fancy.
And since they've met, Big Sean confides in GQ that he had become a bit of a "Gleek."
"How could you not, man, if that was your girlfriend, you'd probably be Gleekin' too.
