Ridley Scott tends to make films that fall into one of three buckets. First, we have his science-fiction work, which features classics like "Alien" and "Blade Runner" and runs all the way up to "The Martian" and his two "Alien" prequels. Second, there are gritty dramas. Some of them have big scale action elements, like "Black Hawk Down," and others are much more stripped down, such as "The Counselor." But by far, the biggest bucket of Ridley Scott's career is for historical epics. From his very first film back in 1977 with "The Duelists," Scott has shown a consistent interest in history, especially if it involves fighting.
Just in the last decade, Scott has directed the masterful "The Last Duel," the decidedly un-masterful "Exodus: God and Kings," and his most recent film "Napoleon," all of which fall into this bucket. He does so many of them that a couple fall under the radar.

Conrad Bassett-Bouchard started his championship Scrabble game Wednesday with the word "zilch" and finished with the opposite - the $10,000 prize and the title of national Scrabble champion. The 24-year-old player, from Portland, Oregon, beat 29-year-old Jason Li, of Montreal, in the final round of the five-day 25th National Scrabble Championships played at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in Buffalo, New York. Back in 2002, aspiring musicians Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd were laughed out of an open audition in London, where Warner representatives were looking for the next Eminem. Their rejection had nothing to do with a perceived lack of talent, however, the friends had drawn crowds back on home turf, but because they were from Scotland and dared to rap in a Scottish accent.
The friends understandably wanted revenge, and rather than giving up concocted a plan that would allow them to do so while also exposing the prejudices of a biased music industry. Inventing Californian personae and perfecting American accents, Gavin and Billy became Silibil ‘n’ Brains and returned to London where they almost immediately attracted interest. Dubbed the next big thing, they were signed by Sony UK and welcomed into the industry with open arms.

As a testament to the power of friendship -- and the power of "Friends" -- a group of graduating students at Elon University chose to celebrate their impending freedom by filming a shot-for-shot remake of the iconic NBC comedy's opening credits in front of the school's fountain.
Lucie Miller, Sarah Davenport, Alexis Deprey, David Gwynn, Will Anderson and Patrick Cunningham reenacted the scenes made famous by Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer over two nights, working for 15 hours in total, Gwynn told GoodMorningAmerica.com.
"We thought we could do it in one night, but we couldn't because the fountains shut off," Gwynn explained. "With all the set up, and going to thrift shops and getting the right clothes and putting it together and matching it frame by frame, the whole thing took 15 hours."
The students briefly considered attempting the feat without informing the school, but...

Reigning princess of music, Taylor Swift, turns 23 today! The constantly-looking-for-love singer has dated almost as many dudes as the number of years she's been alive -- and her pocketbook has benefited from those romantic tales of woe. Swift, who is now a Golden Globe nominee, gave herself a birthday present in the form of a brand new video for "I Knew You Were Trouble" the third single off of her latest album, "Red." And it’s like nothing she’s ever done before! Swift sports a punk-rock look in tattered clothing, pink, hombre dyed hair and follows love-interest Reeve Carney ("Spider Man: Turn Off the Dark" star) through a series of wild-child adventures. "We knew we wanted it to be some sort of corruption — good girl is living her life, going about her, you know, daily life and all of sudden she runs into this force," she told MTV News.

Today is the day that a new Taylor Swift album was released, so obviously we're doing our duty as Americans and over-analyzing her lyrics and her not-so-subtle liner note codes. True to form, Swift painstakingly sifted through the lyrics in her liner notes (which are not only tucked into the CD, but available as an iTunes download) and capitalized specific letters. Since we have too much time on our hands, we took careful notes and did a whole bunch of research so you don't have to. You're welcome.
The first song on the album, "State of Grace," basically says that love is worthwhile even if it's difficult. Her hidden code, Love Doesn't Count After Goodbye, implies a change of heart. Given the reference to Sagittarius and blue eyes, we're putting this one in the Jake Gyllenhaal column.
Which brings us to "Red," about a reckless, fast-paced love that ends abruptly.

Taylor Swift debuted her new single 'I Knew You Were Trouble' during the Oct. 8 episode of ‘Good Morning America.’ Read the lyrics and tell us who You think it's about! Let the speculation begin! Taylor Swift loves to name names in her songs, and her latest single, "I Knew You Were Trouble" even drops the name "John" -- so, could it be about John Mayer? What do You think? Taylor has been in high-profile romances with John, Chord Overstreet, Jake Gyllenhall and Joe Jonas in the last few years and had lesser-known flings with Cory Monteith, Mark Foster of Foster The People and Will Anderson, the lead singer in the band Parachute. In the past, "Dear John" has trashed John Mayer, "Forever and Always" explained her relationship with Joe Jonas, while "Back To December" was an apology for Taylor Lautner. Which person do you think "I Knew You Were Trouble" is about?...

As day turns into night, so Taylor Swift turns a broken relationship into a new hit pop song. Indeed, at this point, it could be argued that Taylor Swift specifically dates people just so she can seek inspiration from breaking up with them — or perhaps Swift’s romances occur in a quantum state, such that she is simultaneously in love with her paramour and already writing the first draft of their break-up song. In any case, this week Swift released the sternly-worded “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” a charming little ditty about an on-again/off-again relationship that is ultimately off-again-forever.

Let's break it down. But since 2010, Swift has been linked to "Glee" stars Cory Monteith and Chord Overstreet, "Country Strong" hottie Garrett Hedlund, Parachute frontman Will Anderson and,...

Taylor Swift's new single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" shot to the top of the iTunes chart just hours after it was released on Monday evening, when Swift debuted it at a listening party for fans at her Nashville home. Though Swift says she didn't have any songwriting collaborators on her last album, Speak Now, her new album Red will feature a lot of new sounds courtesy of some big-name cowriters
Max Martin and Shellback are credited with writing "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" with Swift -- Martin, of course, being the prolific Swedish producer behind songs like Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" and Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Martin also worked with Avril Lavigne on four songs for her record "Goodbye Lullaby," so it's no surprise that Swift's new song has a very Avril sound to it -- relying on...

Carole J. Bufford in speak easy. Metropolitan Room, NY
Hearing Carole J. Bufford sing backed by Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks is a rare alignment of stars not to be missed. Chronicling the Prohibition Era through its music, speak easy. brings this bygone time of legal restraint and social release to life in a relevant manner that is laced with nostalgia but not dependent on it. Deep within Bufford's dazzling and somewhat puckish eyes is a spark that sets fire to the music that radiates from her. Exuding playful sexiness, her presence is well suited for this genre and her connection to it is displayed by her genuine grasp of every note.
Bufford sings with a sincerity that is hard to match, coinciding with every expression on her face, every movement of her body, and every fiber of her being. There is love in her voice for these songs and it...
